Cresceu numa aldeia do norte, em Paredes, num país conservador, salazarista, com as janelas fechadas para o mundo. Em casa não tinha livros, mas logo aos 13 anos descobre o gosto pela leitura nas carrinhas da biblioteca itinerante da Gulbenkian, que lhe define a vida inteira. Comunista, viveu na clandestinidade na luta antifascista e, no final dos anos 70, integra a fundação da Caminho. É o único editor de uma obra de língua portuguesa distinguida com o Prémio Nobel da Literatura, uma distinção atribuída a José Saramago, em 1998. Na sua família de autores tem ainda 8 Prémios Camões.
