Creativity thrives inside structure, and Lauren and Kass of Crossing Threads are proof. This week, I sat down with the Sydney-based sisters behind one of Australia's most distinctive fibre art practices. Together, they use weaving as a way of exploring emotion, memory and connection through texture and form — describing their creative practice as "breathing through their hands."This episode tackles the business of being a working artist - how to optimise workflow, efficiency and creative output while still prioritising time for one another and family. From contracts and workflows to platforms, tools and processes, Lauren and Kass get into the nitty gritty of how they've optimised their art business without sacrificing the slow, intuitive nature of their craft.Type A listeners will love every minute. A high school anatomy teacher's question and a mesmerizing first shadowing of a six-hour open-heart surgery nudged her toward medicine. She kept living fully as a type B student who played Division II basketball, learning time management the hard way: rigid schedules, constant travel, and studying through exhaustion. In this conversation, Kiki unpacks being a reapplicant after a 506 MCAT and limited volunteer hours, what she fixed the second time—earlier timing, practice questions over rereads, quick secondaries—and why she initially applied to only two schools. She explains how medical transport and later working as a pharmacy technician broadened her clinical lens. When out-of-state tuition topped $80,000, she took a hard look at Navy HPSP, did her homework beyond recruiter promises, and chose the scholarship—even after getting off a local waitlist later. Kiki shares how she reframed setbacks, how much community mattered, and what realistically concerns her about the military match: deployment and accepting “assignments.” Her closing message to premeds is clear and steady—keep doing the work, stay intentional, and trust that what's meant for you won't miss you. What You'll Learn:- How a D2 athlete built time management without sacrificing premed- What went wrong in her first cycle and how she changed it- Why she chose Navy HPSP and how she evaluated the trade-offs- Ways transport and pharmacy tech roles expand clinical exposure

Dr. Javier Szwarcberg, CEO of Spruce Biosciences,  is developing drugs for rare diseases with a primary focus on Sanfilippo Syndrome Type B, a devastating genetic neurodegenerative disease affecting children.  The source of this condition is a lack of an enzyme, which results in a buildup of a toxic substance in the brain.  The company's drug is an enzyme replacement therapy administered directly to the brain to bypass the blood-brain barrier, and clinical trial data is showing a strong effect on the toxic substrate in the brain and a meaningful benefit on cognition. Javier explains, "It's a devastating, profoundly affecting disease whereby children are typically born normally and born asymptomatic. And over time, they develop an accumulation of a toxic substrate throughout the body, but primarily the brain. And because of that, it eventually results in a fairly young age, usually between two and a half and I would say three and a half, in symptoms starting. That toxic substance builds in throughout the brain and starts affecting initially learning behavior. Sleep patterns are very much affected, whereby children don't sleep at night and sleep during the day, and they're very hyperactive. And sometimes the diagnosis is confused, and there's no clarity as to what is going on with the child, early in the onset of the disease."   "Yes, it's a genetic disease that's inherited. There's a missing enzyme responsible for the metabolism of this toxic substrate, which I talked about, called heparan sulfate. So when heparan sulfate builds up in the brain, it causes inflammation and neurotoxicity, ultimately resulting in neurodegeneration. Think about it as a disease that is very similar to what you end up seeing with Alzheimer's, whereby the toxic substrate in Alzheimer's is between neurons and outside of the actual cell. In this case, in this disease, the toxic substance, which is different than the one that accumulates in Alzheimer's but builds within the neural cells. Yes, so that's very well-known and very well-characterized." #SpruceBio #SanfilippoSyndrome #MPSIIIB #CureSanfilippo #RareDiseases #EnzymeReplacementTherapy #LysosomalStorageDisorders #BiopharmaceuticalInnovation #ClinicalTrials #RareDiseaseResearch #HealthcareInnovation #PrecisionMedicine sprucebio.com Download the transcript here

Michael Green, Chief Strategist and Portfolio Manager for Simplify Asset Management, joins Julia La Roche on episode 366 to break down what he calls the most important and overlooked structural shift in financial history — the rise of passive investing. Green argues that the market isn't broken in the way most people think: it's not fraud or irrational exuberance, it's the mechanical consequence of a regulatory change in 2006 that turned 401k contributions into an automatic, valuation-blind buying machine. With passive now at 55% of the market — and rising 4% per year — Green shares new research showing that somewhere between 65% and 80%, a 1987-style crash stops being a possibility and becomes nearly inevitable. He also connects the dots between our retirement system, the housing crisis, and why both boomers and millennials are scared — just for completely different reasons.Links:Follow Mike on X: https://twitter.com/profplum99Read Mike's Substack: https://www.yesigiveafig.com/Visit Simplify: https://www.simplify.us/Timestamps00:00 Intro and welcome Mike Green1:04 - What "broken markets" actually means today 2:40 - The Costanza market and how Mike's research began 6:21 - Passive went from 2% to 55% of the market since 1992 7:05 - Why passive investing is just momentum with no valuation filter 9:45 - The 2006 Pension Protection Act — the legislation nobody talks about 10:13 - Why Vanguard and Bogle aren't the ones to blame 10:19 - The book: The Greatest Story Ever Sold 10:39 - The academic paper that forced Mike to rewrite the book 13:59 - Type A vs Type B savers — and the snow cone moment 14:35 - Prices don't move because of information. And she's proving that you don't need a giant sensory gym or a million-dollar buildout to create a thriving practice. Beyond one-on-one sessions, Emily runs groups year-round and has recently expanded into public speaking and professional development. In this episode, Emily shares how she went from working in outpatient clinics to starting an OT department for someone else, to finally launching her own solo practice and how each step taught her something valuable about what she actually wanted. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How she built a full caseload for herselfThe low-cost and semi-non-traditional but fantastic space she sees clientsCreative payment options she's leaning into beyond insurance and private payHer advice for taking imperfect action, especially if you're a fellow type B, ADHD, big-picture thinkerEmily's journey proves that successful private practice owners come in all types. Warriors of Teancum Men's Retreat - https://www.cwicmedia.com/warriors-of...  Two big "archetypes" of Bible commentary: Critics (Type A) vs Preachers (Type B). Type A is academic, puzzle-solving: authorship, dates, audiences, layers of editing. Type A can be written as if God is methodologically "out of scope"—even by believers. Tools on the critic side: languages, textual criticism, archaeology, history, sociology. Archaeology shifted from "confirming the Bible" to often complicating/contradicting surface readings. There's a spectrum / hybrid zone (e.g., scholars who do serious work but keep discipleship in view). Dave proposes a "third model": the Bible as a damaged record of a real encounter with God, not mere secular artifact. The Book of Mormon provides "other data" critics don't have—an anchored point-of-view. The Book of Mormon is hyper-explicit about authors/editors ("Hi, my name is Mormon/Nephi…") and record transmission. That explicitness gives "planks to stand on" when approaching a messy, anonymous biblical anthology. It also helps solve two problems: (1) Is the Bible solvable? (2) What can you responsibly take to the pulpit? Pulpit takeaway: you can preach from known voices/perspectives (Jacob, Nephi, Alma) without getting lost in source debates. Observation: most Saints read Type B; Type A feels dry, hard, "outside comfort zone," and takes effort to digest. Engaging scholarly tools can illuminate both Bible and Book of Mormon more deeply.  Cwic Media Website: http://www.cwicmedia.com

When medical school forces couples apart, students face tough realities Medical students dish on the messy, tender, and surprisingly philosophical reality of long-distance relationships during med school, from navigating five-hour drives and FaceTime rituals to deciding whether love can survive diverging lives on opposite sides of the world. Dave is joined by co-host M1s Cory Karasek and first-timers Elizabeth Meyer, Margaret Huang, and Jonah Albrecht — each bringing a completely different version of the long-distance story. Liz is making it work with her boyfriend Riley, who logs most of the miles so she can keep studying. Jonah is bracing for the moment his girlfriend Victoria leaves for PA school hours away, still figuring out the logistics while trying not to be, as he admits, aggressively Type B about the whole thing. Cory brings the perspective nobody wants but everyone needs — the relationship that didn’t make it through the distance — somehow managing to be funny, honest, and more or less at peace about it. And Margaret? Well, she opens with “I catfished you guys” and proceeds to deliver an unexpectedly beautiful take on love, friendship, and a 15-year long-distance best friendship that started on Skype in fifth grade. If you’re wondering whether your relationship can survive medical training, this episode won’t give you a formula — but it’ll give you something better. You’ll walk away with real talk on how to have the big conversations before distance hits, when “figuring it out as you go” works best, and how intentionally folding your partner into your new world can be the thing that keeps you from drifting into strangers. It’s warm, it wanders, it goes places you don’t expect — and somewhere between the insider trading jokes and the onesie party bus tangent, there’s genuinely useful stuff in here for anyone trying to love someone from far away while also surviving med school. If you've ever felt “too messy” or “not organized enough” to run a real art business—this one's for you.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we're very much in planning mode - talking babymoon ideas, future parenting rules (we NEED your thoughts on the bed-making debate), and yet another round of nesting. We start with coffee shop talk (yes, the same one we've been talking about for the last two weeks), why good habits take forever to build while bad ones take about two days, and the current parent uniform: sweatsuits with mystery stains. From there, it's full nesting energy (again) - labeling everything (western shorts, IYKYK), debating whether kids are born Type A or if we accidentally make them that way, and getting into the surprisingly divisive question of whether kids should make their own beds (possibly our first real parenting style disagreement live on the pod??). Then we get into technology and boundaries: the no phones in bedrooms rule, what age kids are actually getting phones now, and how we somehow ended up with a landline (yes, really). We celebrate Maria's one-year anniversary with us, spiral into celebrity power couples, Grammys discourse, Valentine's Day card exchanges at school, and our ongoing “no gifts” debate. Mid-episode, we start planning our babymoon (US only, no car required - please send help), talk through joint bachelor/bachelorette parties (fun or a hard no?), share our #1 travel hack that immediately lowers stress (with or without kids), and revisit the ongoing dog conversation - why everyone says we should NOT get one yet, and whether we're secretly a no-pets house… until the day we're not (I still cannot believe Harrison asked if I'd consider a pet spider). We wrap with mall nostalgia (or lack thereof), a classic Bicker of the Week (pool vs. no pool - IN TEXAS), and a new behavioral tactic we'll keep in mind for those future meltdowns: connection before direction. Is the ultimate parenting flex actually… no gifts at all? Because according to The Cut, Millennial parents now fall into two dramatic camps:Camp Maximalist: “Here’s every toy that's ever been produced.”Camp Minimalist: “Your present is… presence.” Meanwhile, gentle parenting has officially been cancelled. After a viral post dragged the whole “boundary-less vibes only” approach, we’re gathered here today to mount a defence before it’s declared emotionally supportive manslaughter. And in other critical news, the internet is deep into an investigation of the gossip going on about the Millennial mum group — Ashley Tisdale, Mandy Moore, and Hilary Duff — basically the Avengers of wholesome parenting. What are they hiding? PTA secrets? Matching snack schedules? We will, of course, be looking into it with the seriousness it deserves… which is none. Our Recommendations:

How much effort is enough—for you and your students? In this episode, I'm weaving together three listener questions about navigating effort, expectations, and balance. We'll explore how to recognize whether you lean more toward Type A (overextending) or Type B (holding back) tendencies, and how to make small, mindful adjustments so you're not burning out—or stagnating. You'll hear practical advice for: Reworking your expectations of yourself during seasons of low energy, burnout, or chronic illness. Knowing when to give yourself permission to do less, and when to gently push yourself to do more. Supporting students who either overextend or under-extend themselves without trying to individualize every message for every learner. The takeaway? A simple framework you and your students can use to calibrate effort in healthier, more sustainable ways. Because your impact as a teacher isn't about doing more—it's about doing what matters most.

(00:00-24:03) – Query & Company opens on a Thursday with Jake Query remembering where he was on this day in 2001 as we continue to mourn the losses of Americans from 24-years ago. He weighs in on a comparison he saw with Daniel Jones and explains why he is all bandaged up. (24:03-38:57) – Brandon Krisztal from Guerilla Sports in Denver joins Jake Query to preview this weekend’s game between the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts. He highlights the strengths, weaknesses, and the week one performance for Denver. Brandon also comments on what type of defense Denver will try to run against the Colts and why the Rockies continue to suck. (38:57-44:48) – The first hour of the show concludes with Jake and Eddie discussing a comment made by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver yesterday. (44:48-1:06:34) – Jake fully dives into what issue he had with Adam Silver’s comment about the NBA from the previous segment. He also previews the first test of the season for Barry Odom’s team against the USC Trojans on Saturday, explains the coaching impact that has been made on this team so far, and what Odom has done to connect with the fans. (1:21:50-1:27:15) – The second hour of the show concludes with Jake asking Eddie, and the audience, if he is a Type A or Type B personality because of someone saying he’s Type A. (1:27:15-1:50:00) – Former Purdue wide receiver Seth Morales joins Jake Query to relive his game winning touchdown catch in 2000 against Ohio State to send the Boilermakers to the Rose Bowl. (1:50:00-2:07:47) – The voice of the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Taylor, makes his weekly visit on the show to chat with Jake Query about Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos. (2:07:47-2:07:56) – Today’s show closes out with Jake welcoming JMV to the show from Ale Emporium in Fishers to preview his show. A silent danger lurks within the descending thoracic aorta. While most Type B aortic dissections are managed medically, up to half of these patients will either require life-saving surgery or die within just five years. So how do we separate those who will quietly recover from those on the edge of catastrophe? How do we protect the spinal cord, bowel, and limbs from the devastating consequences of malperfusion? Join the University of Michigan Department of Vascular Surgery as they tackle the high-stakes decisions behind managing this unpredictable disease—where timing is critical, interventions are evolving, and lives hang in the balance. Hosted by the University of Michigan Department of Vascular Surgery: ·       Robert Beaulieu, Program Director ·       Frank Davis, Assistant Professor of Surgery ·       Luciano Delbono, PGY-5 House Officer ·       Andrew Huang, PGY-4 House Officer ·       Carolyn Judge, PGY-2 House Officer Learning Objectives: 1.         Discuss general approach to diagnosis and management of TBAD. 2.         Identifying high-risk features in uncomplicated TBAD and understanding their role in determining the need for surgical management. 3.         Review endovascular techniques for managing malperfusion of the limbs, viscera, and spinal cord and discuss associated decision making.
