Health challenges don't only impact our physical bodies. Health challenges impact every area of our lives. When multiple challenges rudely intersected Susan's path over the course of nine months … well, those challenges exponentially impacted her life.Having been very healthy up to that point made her feel like her life was spiraling out of control. Doctor after doctor. Test after test. Still no answers. Even though she felt depleted and frustrated, she was determined that the challenges she was facing would not stop her. She continued to fight to overcome the challenges. I was curious how she dealt with challenge after challenge impacting her life. She shared how a friend gave her a plaque for her 50th birthday with a verse from Isaiah on it.It said, “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).She didn't just read those words. She believed them. She clung to the hope included in those words. “I just had faith that one day I would run, and I would not be weary. And I would walk and not be faint.” She took God at His Word. Finally, after the tenth medical diagnosis, Susan discovered the root cause of her multiple health challenges. With this information in hand, Susan researched how to fight this infection. Among several things, she radically changed her diet, which improved her gut health and allowed her to regain her health. Take Susan's Candida quiz to find out if Candida is contributing to your health challenges at www.candiquiz.com.Those multiple health challenges tried to stop Susan. But God used them to refine her purpose: to help others reclaim their health. She's written eight health-related books that will help you reclaim your health. This week, we're doing something a little different on the podcast: we're talking about food and faith. The Bible has a lot to say about love, trust, wisdom, and following Jesus, but have you ever wondered what the Bible says about food and feeding our kids? In this episode, I sat down with Susan U. Neal, RN, MBA, MHS, an author, speaker, and certified health and wellness coach. Susan's passion and mission are to improve the health of Americans. Her latest book, “Eat God's Food: A Kid's Guide to Healthy Eating” teaches kids about the differences between healthy and unhealthy foods, and helps them learn how to eat foods that are good and that God intended for us to eat. Susan talks about what the Bible says about food, and whether or not God cares about what we feed our kids. She also offers easy ways you can move away from processed foods and include more real food in your kids' diet, how to get them excited about healthy eating, and how we can all stop striving for perfect meals. Welcome 1:48 Let's talk about your story! 3:29 Food isn't something Christians talk about so what does God say about our bodies, the food we eat, and our eating habits? 5:12 What do you think about some Christians who believe we shouldn't eat meat? 7:27 What are your favorite Bible verses about food? 8:23 Does God care what we eat and feed our kids? 9:06 Why do you find that it's hard for families to stick to eating more real, whole foods? 12:47 In the U.S., all we think about is food. I love Matthew 6:25. How can we use this guidance in our lives? 17:50 Church is one place where food can be a main focus: events, classes, and of course, the candy for kids after they recite a Bible verse. Thoughts? 20:19 Parents are stressed and turning to food. What does the Bible say about overeating, emotional eating, etc? 22:18 In your book, you talk about “God's food?” What is it? 23:53 It's completely impossible to avoid processed foods so how do you approach that? 24:23 What do you recommend for parents who are looking to move from mostly processed foods to real foods? 26:56 I love how you break the book down into questions: why did God plant a garden? and Why did He give you fruits, vegetables, seeds? How can we talk to our kids about these ideas? 28:40 Are there ways to glorify God with our food and meals? LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Julie talks about "Made to Crave" by Lysa TerKeurst. Susan talks about her books, “Healthy Living Series: 3 Books in 1: 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates” and “Eat God's Food: A Kid's Guide to Healthy Eating.” Learn more about Susan U. Episode Summary: My guest, Susan Neal, RN, MBA, MHS, and I talk about how to help our children establish good health and eating habits. Susan is a certified health and wellness coach whose background in nursing and health services lead her to seek new ways to educate and coach people to overcome health challenges. Her passion and mission are to improve the health of Americans. Quotables from the episode: 1 in 4 children in the United States are clinically obese. 13% of children aged 2-5 suffer from obesity; 20% of children 6-12 years old are obese. Children who have increased weight in kindergarten are four times more likely to be obese in 8th grade. Obesity in our children leads to Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Most of our processed foods have stripped the nutrients out of our foods and contributed to the obesity crisis. 85-90% of our corn, wheat, oat, and soy products have been genetically modified. Scripture References: Ephesians 5:18 “Don't drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path be filled instead with the Holy Spirit and controlled by him.” Use the specific scripture you chose to bind the strong man every time he tempts you. Write this verse on an index card and memorize it. James 4:7 (NIV) “Submit yourself to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you.” There is a secret to resisting the devil—you must first submit yourself to God. How in the world do you do that? In my experience, you no longer do your will but God's will by submitting your life to him. Luke 10:19 Jesus told his disciples, “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy.” If you are a disciple of Jesus you can accept the authority he gave you. In the book of Acts, the apostles healed and worked miracles in the name of Jesus. Using the name of Jesus is key to binding the strong man of addiction because then you operate under Jesus's authority.
