We often hear the phrase "aging gracefully," but what exactly does that mean? Many of us assume that our expected aging process is predetermined by genetics and family history, but that's not entirely true. While genetics play a role, our lifestyle choices and environmental factors also heavily impact our aging journey. The good news is that we have the power to make choices that will benefit us in the long run. So, aging may not be set in stone, but rather a path we can steer with thoughtful decisions. Dr. Mark Williams has dedicated his career to unlocking the secrets of aging and understanding how our environment shapes our longevity. In this episode of This Is Getting Old: Moving Towards an Age-Friendly World, he shares five insights essential for understanding the aging process—from how nutrition and exercise play a role in our health to the importance of having a safe place to rest at night. With these five secrets, you can work towards a healthier life as you age. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️Aging Gracefully: The 5 Secrets You Need to Know

Welcome back to Eggs! This week's special guest is equal parts CEO, part personal development wonk, part biohacker info geek, and serial entrepreneur. Our guest is none other than Thom King. While his list of favorite books contains many success-oriented and personal-development classics, the traditional definition of achieving success isn't what motivates Thom. He follows more of a “you aren't doing well unless you're also doing some good” line of thinking. Consequently, his company, Icon Foods, has been built around the simple principle of “do the right thing.” Here to talk about becoming a successful entrepreneur, building a business, starting with "why," and how to make a big impact. My guest began a self-directed program of training in the streets, and at 61 began a "hobby" of running up and down the oval track as a sprinter. As he gradually progressed, he continued training year-round and had some decent successes and awards. In 2015 John had a book published about his life in general and experiences in the world of track and field titled "Johnny Run Lately."One of the reasons John has continued, well after his retirement in 2000 from the business and academic world, is the people who frequently tell him they were encouraged to get off the couch and become more involved in taking care of the body they were issued. He hopes that the reader of this book will also be encouraged to find an activity that they enjoy, and give it a go. https://www.amazon.com/Sprint-Gold-National-Olympics-Without/dp/1647195926#:~:text=A%20Sprint%20to%20The%20Gold,9781647195922%3A%20Amazon.com%3A%20Bookshttp://www.yourlotandparcel.org

When you place a premium value on your health it allows you to orchestrate and live your life with compassion, desire, and inspiration. For Fitness & Mindset Coach Jai Bazevski After a sudden cardiac arrest in 2008 from a rare heart condition, “I underwent a series of heart surgeries and long road to recovery, both physically and mentally. From my experience I knew that I wanted to help people with illness prevention, so they didn't have to go through what I went through. It urged me to leave my I.T career to study to become a life coach and personal trainer and start a fitness, mindset coaching business. SQ1 Fitness (meaning Square One fitness) refers to taking everything back to "square one" and rebuilding a healthy mindset and habits from the ground up. My experiences over the last 15 years have been life changing, being able to help thousands of people through my struggles, and my gym and coaching has also made me a better, more confident, and successful person that I can bring to the world and share with others to inspire them.” He joined me this week, to tell me more. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. Do you want a healthy immune system, balanced hormones, glowing skin, and more energy? Then it's time to focus on supporting detoxification pathways. In this week's episode, Jenn breaks down how our body detoxes, the phases of detoxification, and what we can do to support this process through vitamins, minerals, and a balanced lifestyle. She also discusses the things in the environment we cannot control and gives some shocking statistics regarding how many toxins we consume yearly. Tune in to learn how to understand the role of detoxification diets and what you can do daily to create a lifestyle that supports your body's natural detoxification process.IN THIS EPISODE:● [8:17] How does our body detox itself? Jenn breaks this down by organs. ● [9:29] Phases of detoxification.● [13:28] What factors impact our body's detoxification process? ● [16:05] How do all of our organs work together to detox the body? ● [19:48] How does detoxification help us age well, and what are the impacts on our cells?● [23:04] Which antioxidants are essential for good detoxification? ● [28:50] Where are we getting all the toxic chemicals? ● [32:13] How might we know if a build-up of toxins is impacting our health? ● [35:04] What vitamins and minerals help with detoxification? ● [36:58] What can we do to support detoxification?● [42:34] How do we create moderation with our toxic intake and support our body? KEY TAKEAWAYS:● We have the organs and cells involved in detoxification. Detoxification is energy, and it is all nutrient dependent. ● Because of our environment, the human body is forced to filter and detoxify an average of 80,000 chemicals. There are 2,000 new chemicals introduced into commerce annually in the United States. ● Our body is detoxing every day, all the time. It is best served by supporting our natural detox pathways by minimizing insults and providing the building blocks for proper detox function. QUOTES: “Toxins are basically any harmful substance that can build up in the body over time. We get them from the air we breathe, the food we eat, stress, exercise, and our metabolism. The body is designed to do this process to get these toxins out, but our modern world has an overabundance of these toxins building up in our bodies because we have way more coming in than our natural systems can tolerate.” - Jenn Trepeck “Detoxification is as important as sleep and exercise.” - Jenn Trepeck“Stress, exercise, our metabolism, and more also create toxic byproducts the body needs to eliminate.” - Jenn Trepeck“When studies evaluate the safety of chemicals, they are tested for safety individually. Our lives though, are such that…we are exposed to a cocktail of toxins, which is not studied.” - Jenn Trepeck“To do a proper detox nutrition plan, you need to eat enough. We need fiber; we need all these other vitamins and minerals to support the body's process. If your detox is fasting, that is not a detox.” - Jenn Trepeck RESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram
When it comes to diet, most of us have an idea of what foods are good for our body and what foods aren't. But what about those of us who struggle in our relationship with food, cooking and eating, or body image? As someone who's faced issues with gut health, appetite, and body image for many years, Xandra knows what it's like to try every diet, battle the negative voices in your head, and still not feel your best. It came to a point where she associated food with pain, bloat, and cramping, rather than nourishment. Can you relate? Xandra's discomfort led her to get curious and start looking at food as medicine instead of a dragon she had to slay at every meal. In this episode of Soul Essence, you'll gain insight into Xandra's personal journey of discovering the power of viewing food as medicine and how you can develop a healthy relationship with food. She notes the importance of nourishing yourself with self-love, creativity, and awareness throughout your healing journey.Topics Discussed:· Taking the pressure off yourself to eat perfectly healthy.· Overcoming fear around food and body image.· Finding empowerment and inspiration with food and cooking.· Getting rid of self-sabotage, junk food bartering, and negative self-talk.· Integrating mindfulness and gratitude into your eating habits.· How healthy food can be just as emotionally nourishing as junk food.· Getting creative and having fun with food on a budget. If you struggle with food or you have a love-hate relationship with eating, listen in because this episode is for you! “When you start realizing that what you feed your body allows your body to grow and change and adapt in different ways, you start eating from a place of: How do I nourish myself? How do I do kind things for the Earth? How do I feel really good about what I'm buying with my dollar?” – Xandra HawesListen to the Soul Essence podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or our website! In this episode, we discuss what it means to have a healthy body image vs a healthy body, because they are not the same. We share why we feel the body positive movement has a darker, more worrying side, that will lead to a nation with seriously poor health down the line. We feel this is a necessary conversation, because we feel a duty to create awareness so that more people can live not just a long life, but a great quality life - full of health and happiness. As the song goes, love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage. How about gym and marriage? Just around the corner from Valentine's Day, this week's guests are a couple that's been married for 2 years, both with leadership jobs in popular gym. They offer some wisdom on fitness, faith and marriage on our podcast that I hope you subscribe to! (2:40) JR and Jaime Askew, both personal trainers with higher level jobs with Max Fitness in West Georgia, start off talking about how they met at the gym and fell in love, but not at first. They share a passion for fitness and helping others, but do they work out together? (8:20) They provide some keys to how we can all believe in ourselves and get "motivated" (not their favorite word) to get fit. It's about going deeper with your WHY, not just surface level of how you look but changes you want to make in life. The Askews also talk about common roadblocks that keep people from going to the gym. (12:00) And they agree, there are a lot of parallels between fitness and faith journeys. We can fall off on both, but hopefully the Holy Spirit's conviction doesn't send us further away...but knowing we are washed new often. One of Jaime's life mantras is "Chase God." She explains. 6 weeks into the new year, (17:51) some people may not be as pumped to go the gym as they were on January 1, but their take: it's never too late to start, and hopefully in a judgment-free fitness facility. They discuss helping others with workouts...overcoming fears...challenging yourself...and the benefits of hiring a personal trainer. The benefits of workouts are increasing physical and mental strength. (27:15) And can exercise help with your financial health and time management? (32:14) Losing weight is a goal for a lot of people, and food is said to be 50-80% of the battle, since "you can't outwork a bad diet." JR and Jaime discuss nutrition success and the differences between men and women. (37:35) They also share some things they've learned about marriage. One key word: compromise. And they set all kinds of goals - together. We close out with (43:26) a discussion on not caring about what other people think! Ordinary people can do special things, in the Bible and now. But who defines what's extraordinary? Some may build their life on a foundation of sand (like seeking approval of others), while ignoring outside opinions brings freedom. It took a long time for Jaime to learn that, opening up about how that's partly because she lost her dad before she was a teenager. I close out with a "Parting Gift" - reminding you how the Word inspired the name of this podcast - then a prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Catholics rightly put their spiritual lives first. But what obligation do Catholics have to care for their bodies? And is there a connection between care for the body and care for the soul?
Today, Jacqui and Bryan discuss the ins and outs of maintaining a healthy body and start by talking about skin, nails, and hair and what's causing the signs of aging, the immune system, the heart, the brain, and lastly, muscles. First up, let's talk about our skin, nails, and hair. As we age, our skin can become dull and wrinkles can start to appear. But what's causing these signs of aging? According to health influencer Max Lugavere, "genetics play a large role in how our skin ages, but lifestyle factors such as diet, stress, and sun exposure can also have a significant impact." Next, we'll discuss the immune system. A strong immune system is crucial for protecting our bodies from illness and disease. Dave Asprey, health influencer and founder of Bulletproof, says "the key to a strong immune system is to focus on nutrient-dense foods, regular exercise, and adequate sleep." The heart is another important aspect of maintaining a healthy body. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can all help to keep our hearts healthy. As Dave Asprey says, "the heart is the engine of the body, and we need to take care of it to ensure it runs smoothly." We can't forget about the brain, either. Keeping our minds sharp and healthy can be achieved by staying active mentally, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep. According to Max Lugavere, "our brains need the right kind of fuel, and that means avoiding processed foods and consuming nutrient-dense foods like berries, nuts, and leafy greens." Last but not least, we'll talk about muscles. Regular exercise, especially weight-bearing exercises, can help to maintain muscle mass and strength as we age. As Dave Asprey says, "our muscles are the foundation of our movement and mobility, and we need to take care of them to maintain our independence as we age." We hope you've learned something new about maintaining a healthy body. Remember, genetics play a role in how our bodies age, but lifestyle factors such as diet, stress, and sun exposure can also have a significant impact. As always, thanks for tuning in and we'll see you next time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Time to Focus on Food In this podcast, we talk a lot about the mental game of overcoming stress eating, emotional eating, food obsession, and over eating. We talk a lot about the mindset piece, and it's SO important, but that's only half the equation. The Healthy Mind side of the equation. We need to also spend some time talking about the Healthy Body side of the equation. So for the next few weeks we're going to focus on food because truly, they both work together. Fixing the food, fixing how your body works, will make it so much easier to deal with how your mind works. They both very much work together, and we need to understand both. It's January and many of you probably started some sort of healthy eating plan, to eat cleaner, to eat healthier, to work on the food. And that's amazing! I want to help you along with that, I want to give you some real science backed ideas about food so the next three episodes we're focusing on the 3 macronutrients, proteins, fats, and carbs. We're starting with protein in this episode because in my opinion it's the most important macronutrient for you to optimize in your diet. For those of you in perimenopause or menopause especially, getting enough protein is SO important for hormone production, and muscle mass protection. Most women don't get enough protein and a whole host of issues could be improved if you did - so listen up for the details! And it's not too late to join HMHB for 2023, it's still open through January. So if you think you're ready for more, then the HMHB Program and Membership is ready for you! It's time to bring in the big guns! And by big guns I mean ME
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Jay Nixon. He is a skilled speaker, author, coach, and mentor for anyone looking to get results and permanently alter their way of life. Over the years, Jay has helped thousands of people gain confidence and be their best selves. He hosts a podcast called "Thrive Forever Fit", which covers topics related to diet, exercise, and mentality that can influence how we feel and behave. Jay's father was killed in an accident when he was five. As a coping mechanism for the tragedy, food became his way to comfort himself and led him to overweight. But even in this condition, Jay has always been interested in fitness and nutrition. When he got older, Jay engaged to different sports that helped him on his weight journey. However, he still struggled with his mind as he is anxious about how his body looks. Nonetheless, he became a personal trainer at 17, and since then, Jay has begun to find the path to where he belongs. Ultimately, he decided to open his gym, started writing books, and began his career on coaching people. Thrive Fitness Studio is the name of his gym and everything associated with it is called Thrive Forever Fit because Jay believes we should do something consistently for as long as we live. He wanted to teach people how to live comfortably so that we wouldn't have to do radical things that have been proven to be failures. In this episode, Jay Nixon digs into the issues and wrong beliefs that hinder people from achieving a healthy body and lifestyle. Additionally, Jay emphasizes the value of having the correct mindset when losing weight and some takeaways you can implement immediately to begin your journey towards forever fitness. Tune in as we chat about the mindset around the food, myths about losing weight, advice to start right away, and the difference between intelligent work rather than hard work. The Problem is You, Not the Food There's a lot of drug abuse on the scene in bodybuilding. There's not a lot of alcohol consumption, but there's a lot of prescription and recreational drug use. Your mindset around the food is the real issue, not the food itself. Food is more like fuel and a resource to nourish and do what your body wants. Instead of creating a short-term sustainable diet, make a lifestyle that you are comfortable maintaining forever. [17:00] The Wrong Beliefs in Losing Weight That You Should Avoid You don't need to starve yourself. It's a myth that there's good versus bad food. What we are talking about is real food, not with those different chemicals. Counting macros and calories, it's not sustainable. Developed a lifestyle where you understand what food looks like and what it will do when you eat it. People just want to be told what to do instead of learning what to do. [25:50] What is The Value of Having the Right Mindset in Losing Weight? This has nothing to do with the food, and nothing to do with being overweight. The weight loss was a side effect. It's all about the brain and the mind. The book is about psychological reasons I learned working with clients and myself over time. It was always the story, the mindset, or the belief systems that the client had psychologically that were the issue. Jay uses fitness and nutrition to get people into my world, and then he unpacks the real reasons why they're there. It will be useless to stay with the same beliefs you had before Jay. [32:16] Increase Your Thermostat: Love Yourself and Maintain Your Fitness We have a lot of limiting beliefs, and we have a lot of self-doubts that hold us back. Sometimes, giving a compliment to someone who is not in the right frame of mind can affect them negatively. It all starts with the psychology of what you believe you deserve. Jay's favorite saying is that you'll never be, do or have more than you believe you deserve. [34:20] How Can You Begin Your Lifelong Journey Towards a Healthy Lifestyle? First, Jay helps you to recognize the negative language you are using and change it. Then he will talk about the belief system of who you believe you are. Jay won't let you lie to yourself, but he won't be cruel. He will inform you in a kind manner. If you're using the word “try”, start telling yourself, " I will do what's required. If you'll change your language, it will change your life. If you continually break promises to yourself, that will create a lack of self-belief or a lack of confidence or just that lack of mentality. [42:05] Hard work vs Intelligent Work: What is the Difference? He realizes that most people say they are hardworking, which made him think about its variability and subjectivity. Most of the things he does would not prescribe as hard, but they require him to do them intelligently. There is much more value in being intelligent in food, how our body moves, and how we speak and act rather than working hard. AND MUCH MORE! Jeopardy! champion Amy Schneider tries a body scan meditation to sharpen her focus and calm her nerves as she prepares for the Tournament of Champions. Episode summary: Amy Schneider is the most successful woman to ever compete on Jeopardy!. Part of her winning strategy was to shut down all her mental chatter and completely focus on the competition. But when the cameras are off, she struggles to find the same calm. For today's show, Amy tries a body scan practice to connect with her body and quiet her busy mind. Later we hear from Jonathan Greenberg, a Harvard psychology professor. He explains how mindfulness can make us better problem solvers, and how that can benefit our emotional health, too. How to Do This Practice: Find a quiet place where you feel safe and comfortable. You can be standing, sitting, or lying down. Close your eyes, and take a few deep, long breaths. Move your attention through your body slowly, part by part, starting with your feet. Focus on your feet, then your calves, knees, and so on, until you get to the top of your head. Without judgment, notice what sensations you can identify in each part of the body. When your mind wanders, gently and with self-kindness, guide your attention back to the part of the body you're focusing on in the present moment.
