On this week's episode of "The Diet Obsessed Podcast" I discuss my obsession with pumpkin spice and my addiction to sugar, that has been leading to a lot of over-eating at night.I then launch into a review of a recent episode of the podcast "Diet Starts Tomorrow" where host Aleen interviewed a fascinating guest by the name of Alicia McCarvell.Alicia is a social media influencer, who went viral on Tick-Tock for a few posts, where she showed a side-by-side picture of herself and her husband, under the topic "my partner is 10x hotter than me" and it went viral because Alicia and her husband don't fit "societal molds."Alicia's husband is a body-builder and Alicia is a fat-influencer, so the juxtaposition in their superficial appearance as a couple is not what you typically see.   Alicia talks very honestly about the years she lost being insecure about her body, which led to not living her best life and held her back from incredible experiences.  She discusses incredibly important topics, such as: not leading with your body, body acceptance, vulnerability in relationships, grief, self love, finding enjoyable movement and much more!  If these topics interest you, you will love this show!  Follow "The Diet Obsessed Podcast" and please leave a review!  Also, follow me on Instagram @thedietobsessedpodcast

Welcome to Real Health Conversations with Leah Williamson and Holly Jean Mullen, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioners.   This week on the Real Health Conversations Podcast, Lonestar Keto Girl, Amber Wentworth, joins us to share the not-so-sweet realities of sugar addiction. Amber is a food addiction and sugar specialist with a personal health and weight-loss story that many can relate to – trying every diet program, repeatedly gaining and losing, unable to maintain weight loss, and frustrated with the entire process. Her life changed when she discovered the keto diet and sugar addiction at the root of her struggles. Just like any other addiction to caffeine or cocaine, sugar is pretty addictive in nature too. We have modern science to prove that sugar is indeed one of the strongest addictions known for humans, but how do we know if we are addicted or just having cravings? Amber shares her SUGAR assessment and shares her methods for quitting sugar for good. Did you know, 88% of the population is metabolically unhealthy? Sugar is at the root of metabolic dysfunction and dis-ease. Join me for my 6 Week Fall Sugar Fast starting this September 19. Beyond a physical detox, this sugar fast is also a spiritual transformation. What would you be willing to give up to experience the presence of God in your life again? Many of us sign up for a physical detox program, thinking that if our bodies are healthier, then we're healthier. But a healthy body doesn't do us a lot of good if we are spiritually malnourished. My 6 week online group sugar fast follows the book 40 Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake. In this sugar fast you'll learn how to stop fixating on food and other things you use to fill the voids in life and instead fix your eyes on Christ. Anyone who runs to sugar for comfort or a reward, who eats mindlessly or out of boredom, who feels physically and spiritually lethargic, or who struggles with self-control will discover ,not only freedom from their cravings, but an entirely new appetite for the good things God has for us. Erica Schulte, has a PhD in clinical psychology and is an assistant research professor in The Drexel University Center for Weight, Eating and Lifestyle Science (known as the WELL Centre). This is an interdisciplinary clinical research center which aims to develop, test and create new behavioral and technological solutions to the problems of obesity and disordered eating. Erica Schulte's program of research applies a cutting-edge perspective to understanding overeating and obesity by examining 1) which foods or food attributes (e.g., sugar) may be reinforcing in a manner that directly drives overeating, 2) whether core mechanisms of addictive disorders (e.g., withdrawal) may contribute to eating-related problems for vulnerable individuals, and 3) how food addiction may be a useful construct for individualized interventions. Schulte has investigated these empirical questions using a multi-method approach, including neuroimaging, scale development, food consumption paradigms, and self-report. Her Research Interest is the clinical utility of food addiction as a unique phenotype of disordered eating, the addictive potentials of ultra-processed foods, overlapping mechanisms implicated in substance-use disorders and eating and weight disorders, assessment of addictive-like eating behaviors, and treatment development for eating and weight disorders. Her inspired throughout her career has been listening to individuals express significant shame about their eating behavior and body weight, because they attribute it to personal weakness or a lack of willpower. Like Dr Lucy and Dr Mary, he is really interested in helping people get to the root cause of their relationship with food. In his practice he treats obesity and metabolic disease by using an addiction model rather than a diet model. She has educated thousands of people across the world and hopes to help all those struggling with food addiction. Yes, food can become addictive, and Dr. Vera explains how. Plus, we talk about how to know if you're addicted to food and what steps you can take to face that food addiction. She sees people coming into a residential setting, they're putting down their alcohol, cocaine, cigarettes, and marijuana. However, they start picking up the sugar. Within two or three weeks, they started to gain a lot of weight. Eating was very much like their previous behavior of addiction. Now, Dr. Vera loves to talk about the addiction that people have with food. Plus, she even wrote a book on the subject – Food Junkies. It's a fact-filled guide to coping with compulsive overeating problems. Overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia – Dr. Vera tackles the poorly understood issue of food addiction in her book. Get Food Junkies: https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Junkies-Recovery-Addiction/dp/1459741978/benazadi-20  [06:05] How Can Food Become Addictive? The inspiration for Food Junkies came from another book, Hooked. Hooked is about the troubling story of how food companies have exploited our most fundamental evolutionary instincts to get us hooked on processed foods. Get Hooked: https://www.amazon.ca/Hooked-Food-Giants-Exploit-Addictions/dp/0771059590/benazadi-20 The food industry has made our food addictive by targeting the chemistry in our brains. Sadly, the food industry has figured out that the reward pathway will keep people coming back for their food. Brilliant scientists are paid good money to figure out how to activate those pathways. [08:50] The Negative Impacts On Your Brain When Consuming Sugars Sugars will light up part of the brain that's emotional and impulsive. It's the part of our brain that makes us do things without thought - this is all subconscious thinking. Plus, sugar will trigger dopamine primarily, which is our neurochemical of desire. There's also endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins trigger comfort while serotonin triggers connectedness. Addiction will make you want an entire bag of chips. You can't stop at one or two because your neural biology is so damaged. The physical manifestations of sugar and high-carb addiction are happening in the brain. [17:00] What You Need To Know About The Different Stages of Food Addiction When we talk about food addiction, it's essentially like diabetes. Food addiction is a chronic and progressive condition. You may have a food addiction if you would rather stay at home and eat instead of going out for a social occasion. If you consistently do not feel well because of the food you eat, you may be suffering from food addiction. Another sign of food addiction is eating foods that you know are not going to make you feel good. If your obsession with food is excessive, then you are a food addict. Lastly, if you are in trouble with your health, then you may be a food addict. “You have to be very careful if you're moving down this path of food addiction.” -Dr. Vera [25:25] Fasting For People With Addictions To Food Cutting out sugar will be the first step for people who have an addiction to food. Sugar is the trigger – so, ditch the trigger! If you have a food addiction, be aware of pitfalls. If you have a history of starving yourself, then fasting may not be the right path. Fasting can be healing; however, it's a tool that can hurt you if you do not know how to use it. If it's done carefully, fasting can be great for the body. [30:40] Why Dr. Vera Is A Massive Fan Of Eating More Protein Vera isn't necessary a fan of protein. Instead, Dr. Vera is a fan of low-carb. Protein and fat will give the body satiety. Most likely, if you are low-carb, then you are eating higher protein. Vera says she doesn't have a problem with carbs as long as they are not processed. [32:15] It Takes Three To Four Weeks To Kick Your Sugar Addiction It takes about three of four weeks to quit an addiction fully. A connection with a daily coach or sponsor will be critical on your journey. So, find support from someone while kicking your addiction. Keto Kamp is a great community of people who are ready to help you! [40:00] Treatment: Ways To Help When You're A Food Addict First of all, you have to eat the right food - you have to stop the drug!
