My book is finally out in the world. This week, I'm taking you behind the scenes of the 6-year journey that became Are We Friends Yet? — from a food blog and a 40-page e-book idea, to a 120-page Word document, a friendship framework obsession, a major health crisis, an unexpected book deal, and more moments of crying on the floor than I'd like to admit. This is the story of how this book came to be, the twists and turns I never saw coming, and why following my gut (even when it didn't make sense) ultimately got this book into your hands. In this episode you'll hear about:Why I turned down a traditional publishing deal after years of trying to get this book into the worldHow a trio of chronic illnesses delayed this project by nearly 2 years and forced me to put everything on holdWhat recording the audiobook taught me after more than 180 podcast episodes behind a microphoneThe unconventional launch strategy I'm using instead of jumping straight into a big press tourResources & LinksEpisode 19: The One For Little AlexEpisode 109: How To Rebuild Your Life When Your Capacity ChangesThis episode is sponsored by Slowly, a digital pen pal app used by over 10 million people worldwide. Thought Leadership for Female Founders: How Writing a Book Builds Your Personal Brand

Writing a book is one of the most overlooked thought leadership moves a female founder can make, and most people go into it completely unprepared. On this episode of Dear FoundHer, Lindsay Pinchuk talks with Ruthie Ackerman, author of The Mother Code and founder of Ignite Writers Collective, about what it actually takes to write and publish a book. Ruthie spent years as a journalist and deputy editor at Forbes Women before losing her job, starting a business, and landing a Random House book deal. Now she helps women in business find their voice on the page, and she's honest about how hard the process is.The publishing world has a glamour problem. Most people picture the finished book, not the 90-page proposal, the years of revision, or the media outreach that a publisher will not do for you. Ruthie lays out what female founders need to know before they commit, including how to choose the right publishing path, what a real publicity strategy looks like, and why treating your book like a business launch is the only approach that works. For anyone building a personal brand and wondering whether a book belongs in that plan, Ruthie also speaks directly to the PR for small business reality. Getting press, landing speaking opportunities, and reaching the right audiences all require the same intentionality you bring to every other part of your business. A book done right is a long-term thought leadership asset, not a project you finish and walk away from.If your story has been sitting in the back of your mind waiting for the right moment, this episode is worth your time.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Thought Leadership Starts With Your Story03:51 Ruthie Ackerman's Path From Forbes to Random House05:59 Getting Laid Off and Launching Ignite Writers Collective08:21 How Ignite Writers Collective Grew During the Pandemic10:35 Starting a Book Three Months After Having a Baby12:08 Five Questions to Ask Before You Write a Book13:57 Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing vs. Hybrid15:50 What a 90-Page Book Proposal Actually Looks Like18:35 Why Authors Have to Be Their Own Marketers20:07 Three Tips for Making Time to Write22:08 What Not to Do When Writing a Book24:10 How to Find a Literary Agent26:41 All the Hats You Have to Wear as an Author28:55 How Ignite Studios Supports Authors End-to-End32:11 Ruthie's Three Actionable Steps for Aspiring AuthorsConnect with Ruthie Ackerman:Follow Ruthie on Instagram Subscribe to The FoundHer Files Follow Dear FoundHer on Instagram Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast. Send us Fan MailWhat do literary agents look for in a book proposal? Do nonfiction authors need a finished manuscript before approaching publishers? And how important are comp titles and author platforms when it comes to landing a traditional publishing deal?In this episode of Talking Book Publishing, Kathleen Kaiser and Adanna Moriarty welcome book proposal expert Debra Eckerling to demystify the proposal process. Debra shares her Three C's framework—Concept, Context, and Content—and explains why a book proposal is far more than a publishing requirement. It's a sales and marketing document that helps agents, publishers, and editorial boards evaluate both the book and the author. The conversation explores what makes a nonfiction book marketable, how authors can strengthen their platforms, why comp titles are critical to positioning a book, and the opportunities available to writers pursuing traditional publishing. Debra also shares insights from her own publishing journey and discusses the growing category of "memoir-plus" books that combine personal stories with actionable guidance.Key Takeaways A successful book proposal is built around Concept, Context, and Content.  The overview, audience analysis, and comp titles are among the most important sections of a proposal.  Most nonfiction books do not need to be completed before they are pitched to agents or publishers.  Comp titles help prove market demand while demonstrating how your book fills a unique need.  Publishers evaluate the author as much as the book itself.  An author platform includes both online visibility and real-world credibility.  Time spent waiting on submissions can be used to strengthen your platform and visibility.  Memoir-plus books often have broader market appeal because they combine storytelling with practical takeaways.Connect With UsKathleen: kathleenkasier.comAdanna: abmoriarty.comPodcast listeners receive a special 20% off all ProBookLaunch products. As generative AI continues its meteoric and disruptive rise a recent controversy emerged around a novel called “Shy Girl.” It is the first known instance of a major publisher canceling a book due to suspected AI generation. After cancelling the U.S. release, Hachette Book Group issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to "original creative expression" and noted that authors are required to disclose any use of AI. Our guest says the "Shy Girl" story is just the tip of the iceberg and that he knows of major publishers that accept manuscripts they suspect contain AI-generated text and simply edits them so it's not obvious. We talk with Joshua Lisec to get some clarity on where AI is finding its way into publishing, and what U.S. Copyright Law has to say about it.

When Jen Ruiz was about to turn 30, she set herself an ambitious goal: She would visit 12 countries in 12 months. Working as a lawyer in the US with scant vacation days, she hustled to save money and take advantage of any opportunity to see the world. Once she started traveling, she realized she never wanted to stop. Pivoting to writing, she educated herself about the ins and outs of self-publishing and launched a series of highly successful self-published travel advice books, including "The Affordable Flight Guide" and "The Solo Female Travel Book." At the same time, Jen was acquiring a lifetime of experience on the road, with stories pertaining to her time of life that she knew other readers, particularly women in their thirties, would relate to. Using her self-publishing track record as a launching pad, she strategically applied herself to getting a traditional publishing contract. This resulted in the book "12 Trips in 12 Months", and the upcoming memoir "All You Need is Flights", both published by Blackstone. Listen to Jen Ruiz on the Travel Writing Podcast for a wealth of advice on writing travel books that people want to read and confidently navigating the worlds of self-publishing and traditional publishing. In this Thursday episode of Book Talk for BookTok, we bring an academic lens to bookish culture, genre fiction, and the conversations shaping romance and romantasy today. Our podcast blends literary analysis, cultural criticism, and emotional honesty. We treat romance, romantasy, and fanfiction as genres worthy of serious discussion, not just quick takes. This episode is part of our Subtext Society series, inspired by The Subtext Society Journal. The Subtext Society Journal is a collaborative publication dedicated to thoughtful essays on romance, romantasy, fan culture, and publishing ethics. We explore moral questions, genre evolution, power dynamics, and the real-world impact of stories, guided by values of literary rigor without gatekeeping, community over hierarchy, and ethics-first analysis. Today's discussion focuses on the article: “Revision: Hell or Hell" Finishing a book is a major accomplishment, but the real work begins with revision, which often makes up the majority of the writing process and continues through agents, editors, and multiple drafts. There is no single “correct” way to revise; instead, writers must develop systems that help them assess the full manuscript, identify structural issues like plot holes and character arcs before focusing on prose, and organize feedback in ways that prevent overwhelm. The process can be emotionally challenging, requiring humility, patience, and openness to collaboration, especially when incorporating beta reader feedback and professional edits. Ultimately, revision is about making the story coherent and meaningful first, refining craft and style later, and recognizing that writing is not a solitary pursuit but a collaborative journey shaped by continuous refinement. In this episode of Fully Booked, science fiction author Pat Daily shares the story behind his break from traditional publishing and the hard-earned lessons that led him to take full ownership of his work. From slow production timelines to editorial mishandling and rigid contracts, Pat walks through the key decisions that led him to buy back the rights to his debut novel and transition to self-publishing. While going independent brought greater creative control and stronger reader engagement, it also came with new challenges such as sourcing the right editorial support, managing marketing, and treating writing like a business. Pat's experience with traditional publishing wasn't entirely negative, and reflecting on those trade-offs has him thoughtfully considering whether it might be worth revisiting in the future. Today's discussion offers a grounded look at what it means to take control of your writing career and why, for some authors, handing back a bit of that control may still have its place.   Pat Daily https://thepatdaily.com/   Hidden Gems Need our help publishing or marketing your book?  https://www.hiddengemsbooks.com/author-services/ All episode details and links:  https://www.hiddengemsbooks.com/podcast

She also shares veteran insights on what agents look for in your first 5–10 pages, why voice matters more than perfect punctuation at query time, and how simple tactics like reading your work aloud or letting Word speak it back can reveal structural problems you'll miss by eye alone.Whether you're polishing your first draft or prepping your launch, this episode delivers practical, actionable advice to elevate your manuscript and position your book for success.Resources: • Website ArtfulEditor.com • Instagram: @artfuleditor • Facebook: @artfuleditorAbout our guest: Naomi Kim Eagleson is a Los Angeles-based writer and editor who founded The Artful Editor, an editorial agency dedicated to helping writers of all stripes elevate their manuscripts for publication. This week Jess shares some hard truths about traditional publishing. Only about 300 memoir deals are made each year in traditional publishing. Many go to celebrities with built-in audiences, or authors whose stories have a strong cultural hook or tie to current events. Publishers want more than just your story—they need a clear angle that will sell. If you're aiming to land a deal, here are five key things to keep in mind:Grow your audience. Publishers want to see that you already have a community of readers who are eager for your book.Your story must serve the reader. Editors look for more than just a personal narrative—they want a book that connects to the reader's own journey.Think in categories. Position your story beyond your life experience. Can your memoir also function as self-help, leadership, or cultural commentary?Get professional polish. A well-edited, submission-ready manuscript shows publishers you're serious.Prepare for rejection. Even strong proposals face many no's before they get a yes.But here's the good news: your story matters. And you don't need to wait for permission to share it.If you're tired of sitting on the sidelines while waiting for the industry gatekeepers, come talk to us at Soul Speak Press.
