Northvolt, H2 Green Steel & Syre Director Susanna Campbell on Vargas: The Climate Tech Unicorn Factory

Giant Ideas

Today joining the podcast is Susanna Campbell - co-founder of Syre, and a board member of Northvolt and H2 Green Steel - all companies incubated by Vargas. Based in Sweden, Vargas has systematically created a succession of climate juggernauts from scratch. Their portfolio includes unicorns like Polarium and H2 Green Steel, and Northvolt, a climate decacorn - so worth over 10 billion dollars - which is Europe's largest gigafactory for electric vehicle batteries. At Giant we have backed the latest Vargas incubation, Syre, which aims to decarbonize the textile industry. They've launched in partnership with H&M - who have already signed a $600M offtake agreement to buy green polyester. We think Vargas is the most significant climate organisation in the world - but it's a story that has not been widely told. Today we take you behind the scenes to reveal the Vargas playbook. This episode was recorded live at our annual summit, Giant Ideas. Susanna Campbell is interviewed by Financial Times Gillian Tett. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Another fave episode from the archives features Shakuhatchi Master, Composer, and friend of mine, Shawn Head. One reason this is a favorite ep are hearing Shawn's amazing stories and learning more about my culture. Shawn has made a name for himself on Shakuhatchi, and currently lives in Japan. Since his interview in March of 2021, he's continued to build his studio, record, and more. Shawn Head has an active career as a Shakuhatchi soloist, along with being a composer, and educator. He studied at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music. He also became the youngest non-Japanese Shakuhatchi master at 23. Head emphasizes the possibilities and coherence between Eastern and Western ideas; mixing the aesthetics and sensibilities of Japanese music with a Western musical framework. In 2019 he received the distinct honor of becoming an OSS Tai Shogun for his work in traditional Japanese music. He has toured worldwide, and collaborated with various artists including members of the Houston Symphony, Susanna Campbell of Shoso Duo, and the Westheimer String Quartet. Why do international peacebuilding organizations sometimes succeed and sometimes fail, even within the same country? Bridging the gaps between the peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and global governance scholarship, this book argues that international peacebuilding organizations repeatedly fail because they are accountable to global actors, not to local institutions or people. International peacebuilding organizations can succeed only when country-based staff bypass existing accountability structures and empower local stakeholders to hold their global organizations accountable for achieving local-level peacebuilding outcomes. In other words, the innovative, if seemingly wayward, actions of individual country-office staff are necessary to improve peacebuilding performance. Using in-depth studies of organizations operating in Burundi over a fifteen-year period, combined with fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nepal, South Sudan, and Sudan, Susanna P. Campbell new book Global Governance and Local Peace: Accountability and Performance in International Peacebuilding (Cambridge University Press, 2018) will be of interest to scholars and students of international relations, African studies, and peace and conflict studies, as well as policymakers.
