+++ PLAYLIST +++ 22:57 NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS IT FEELS von LAMBRINI GIRLS 22:50 TAXI MAN von WITCH POST 22:48 RUST von WITCH POST 22:44 SURFIN' ON A ROCKET von AIR 22:39 DEALER von DRESS KIT 22:35 MANHATTAN von DRESS KIT 22:32 THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE von TOMMY RICHMAN 22:29 POINT & KILL von LITTLE SIMZ FEAT. Fractal Patterns May Unravel the Intelligence in Next-Token Prediction

We study the fractal structure of language, aiming to provide a precise formalism for quantifying properties that may have been previously suspected but not formally shown. We establish that language is: (1) self-similar, exhibiting complexities at all levels of granularity, with no particular characteristic context length, and (2) long-range dependent (LRD), with a Hurst parameter of approximately H=0.70. Based on these findings, we argue that short-term patterns/dependencies in language, such as in paragraphs, mirror the patterns/dependencies over larger scopes, like entire documents. This may shed some light on how next-token prediction can lead to a comprehension of the structure of text at multiple levels of granularity, from words and clauses to broader contexts and intents. We also demonstrate that fractal parameters improve upon perplexity-based bits-per-byte (BPB) in predicting downstream performance. We hope these findings offer a fresh perspective on language and the mechanisms underlying the success of LLMs. 2024: Ibrahim M. Alabdulmohsin, Vinh Q. How do we keep spiritual growth or faith consistant as we move around the world?  This episode focuses on raising kids with faith. Our experiences exercising our religious faith traditions and passing them onto our families in the context of being an Expat. How did we pass on (or choose not to pass on) our faith traditions to our kids?  What we did when there were no places to worship aligned with our respective religious affiliations or no English-speaking services? How our Interactions with friends and neighbors whose religious backgrounds were completely different than ours shifted our religious worldview, theological viewpoint, and identity? Any challenges we may have faced when we return home to family and/or congregations who have different views and traditions than our families   In this episode, Susie, Jennie, & Sharoya answers questions sent in by a BPB listener.  The listener wanted us to share our ideas.    Find Susie at HealthyExpatParent.com Find Jennie at TheExpatMom.com Find Sharoya at EmbraceBehaviorChange.com

Contributor: Aaron Lessen, MD Educational Pearls: Torus (Buckle) fractures are a commonly encountered pediatric fracture pattern Typically presents as wrist pain secondary to a child falling on outstretched hand One edge of the bone “buckles” or bends because children's bones are softer and more pliable Management Older studies have shown that short term immobilization with a velcro splint and primary care follow up is sufficient Recent randomized trial compared immobilization with Velcro splint with as needed wrist support using a gauze wrap No significant differences noted in outcomes between the two cohorts Physicians can consider using an ace or gauze wrap as needed for buckle fracture management along with OTC analgesics for pain management References Asokan A, Kheir N. Most athletes don't ever reach the level that Ed reached in his Hall of Fame career, so to hear about a player of his status grinding away at a new venture in life is inspiring. Enjoy this one. I am so thankful to Ed, Dayn, Kelli and Elizabeth for making this call happen! In today's episode I am joined by Duke University pitching coach Chris Gordon. Chris and I go back to our days coaching against each other in the Alaska Baseball League in the summers of 2011 and 2012. In our conversation, Chris walks me through his path in coaching, which started at the high school level, with stops at the NAIA level, division one volunteer assistant, director of baseball operations, and now the pitching coach at Duke in the ACC. This conversation is valuable for anyone new to coaching, working their way up through the coaching ranks, or someone who may be trying to find the best path for yourself. Chris gives some really terrific information for coaches at all levels who are trying to navigate this career. As difficult as finding your way in coaching can be, with no clear cut roadmap to "moving up," the information and emphasis Chris puts on areas you may not even think about as being valuable are prime examples of what has made him successful and has helped promote him to his position at Duke. This was an awesome coaching conversation and I really believe you will find a lot of value in the information Chris provides. Enjoy! On this episode I am joined by brother and sister, and co-owners of Boone County Jail Distillery, Nicki and Sean Stoller. Not only is running a whiskey company out of an old jail that was actually used to house prisoners super awesome, they are also making great whiskey. After talking with Sean and Nicki they quickly climbed my list of great people I have been fortunate to meet and talk with about their whiskey and their company in general. I think after you watch this you will also be a fan of the Stoller's and their brand and want to follow along on their journey of making great spirits. I would highly encourage you to pick up a bottle of their Kinnard and Drake straight bourbon whiskey if you see it near you! Be sure to give them a follow on Instagram. Today I sit down with Mitchell Hansen. Mitchell was a 2nd round draft pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, and later played in the New York Yankees organization, before finishing his baseball career playing independent ball in the Frontier League. He is currently a tight end on the TCU football team. In our conversation Mitchell talks about his path in baseball, his transition into college life as a student-athlete, and we even get to talk a little about his new found enjoyment of whiskey. I highly recommend young players listen to the first 45 minutes or so of this conversation. There is a lot of great information Mitch shares about his journey through baseball.
