Today on the podcast we have Ali Parsa - founder of two unicorn health businesses - Babylon Health and Circle Health.Ali was born in Iran, but left when he was 16, in the aftermath of the Iranian revolution.  Amazingly, he taught himself UK high school, and went on to study civil and environmental engineering at University College London. He sold a media company he started during university, and then joined the investment banking world. 20 years ago, he set up Circle Health - the first private company to run a UK NHS hospital, which became Europe's largest partnership of clinicians with around £200 million of annual revenue and about 3,000 employees. Circle Health was taken public in 2012, when Ali stepped down as CEO.Then, in 2014 - Ali formed Babylon Health, a health service provider that enabled users to have virtual consultations with doctors via text and video on its app. At its height, Babylon was a unicorn - and Ali led Babylon's listing on the NYSE. But share prices dropped at flotation to below $1, with Ali calling the decision to go public through a SPAC an "unbelievable, unmitigated disaster".And now he's bringing a lifetime of lessons from right at the top of American and British healthcare to his next company: Quadrivia - an all-in-one AI health assistant. In this episode we talk about how AI can transform healthcare, what Ali learnt from Babylon Health, and what the perfect age is to build a startup.

Amir leads Fintech and Insurtech investing at AV8 and has been one of the earliest investors in the Insurtech space. Amir has been an entrepreneur, operator and investor with over 15 years of experience, working with early and mid-stage companies on financing, partnerships and strategic growth initiatives. Prior to AV8, Amir was an investment director and founding team member at Munich Re Ventures where he lead and managed investment efforts for two of the funds and made early bets in Insurtech, Mobility and Digital Health in companies like Next Insurance, Inshur, HDVI, Spruce, Ridecell, Babylon Health etc.. Earlier Amir worked for several venture funds, including Route 66 Ventures, focusing on Fintech and Insurtech, and investing in companies such as Simplesurance and DriveWealth. He began his career in Germany as a network engineer and subsequently at Legodo AG (acquired by Open Text, OTEX (NASDAQ)), an enterprise software startup, where he held several roles in sales, business development and product management until acquisition. In 2019, Amir was ranked 11 out of 100 on Global Corporate Venture's Rising Stars list and was named a “VC Champions Select” by All Raise. Amir lives in San Francisco and holds an MBA from Georgetown McDonough School of Business, a BS in Business Informatics from RFH Cologne in Germany and is currently finishing an MS in Law from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. Highlights from the Show Amir started investing in InsurTech in the mid-2010s, and spent most of his investing career at Munich Re in their Ventures team, as the third member of the team They started investing in industrial IoT and similar topics since their funding was from Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB) In 2016, there was more of a pivot into InsurTech as it emerged At AV8, Amir focuses on early stage, focused on very early stage to some revenue traction but still pre-series-A generally Their majority LP is Allianz, and the fund is heavily FinTech-focused They like risk taking businesses like MGAs and full-stack carriers because of the long-term returns, plus the difficulty in selling to insurance companies and surviving the long sales cycles Amir has focused on niche markets or areas where incumbents lack digital solutions, and leading with building a new insurance approach and adding tech after it's established Investing in long-term ideas may take longer, but then there's strong moats that can stop competitors from eating your lunch, which is harder to do with short-term ideas or SaaS areas Investment has gotten tough, but there are investors out there still; they just may be looking more critically at profit potential than might have happened in the past InsurTechs that went public and haven't done well were not alone – the market more broadly was pushing a lot of startups to go public so investors could get returns, but for many it proved too soon to go public because fundamentals weren't there yet This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Ben Sauer shares why designers need to be better presenters, how to keep stakeholders awake and engaged, and what to do when disaster inevitably strikes. Highlights include: Is how design is presented more important than the design itself? How do you help stakeholders to relate more powerfully to design work? What is the Goldilocks Zone and how can designer's find it quickly? Why can it be useful to show stakeholders design work bit-by-bit? How do you deal with difficult people when presenting design work? ====== Who is Ben Sauer? Ben is an independent product and design strategist, coach, and trainer, helping companies to craft the vision for their products, and to inspire better internal processes and practices. Drawing on over 20 years of experience, he has written and spoken about strategic storytelling, voice UI design, and how slowing down can help organisations to speed up. And his insights have been put to use at organisations such as NASA, Amazon and the BBC. Ben's most recent mission is helping designers to become more influential by becoming more confident communicators of their work. That's why he's recently published a book called “Death by Screens”, a practical how-to guide for presenting high stakes design work. Before becoming an independent consultant, Ben worked at Babylon Health, where he was first a Director of Design and then a Director of Product. There, he led a large team of over 100 designers, clinicians, data scientists and engineers. The session will be lead by Adrian Taylor, Director of Diversity, Premier Health; Ahmed Salim, Chief Compliance Officer, iRhythym; and Nakis Urfi, Product Compliance Officer, Babylon Health. ESG and DEI are two of the hottest issues in compliance, and in this podcast preview of their session they start by taking on a controversial topic: Should DEI and ESG be combined? Traditionally, DEI has been its own discipline. Many now argue it should considered a part of the S (Social) in ESG, while others feel that doing so would diminish the emphasis on DEI. Ideally, DEI should not be affected by being included in ESG, they say. If handled correctly, it can maintain its focus and management commitment and even strengthen ESG efforts. When the two are aligned they create a more sustainable business model that balances people, profit and planet. Together they can also help foster engagement with stakeholders, improve culture, encourage greater accountability, and help the company's reputation. To be successful, Nakis, Ahmed and Adrian argue, organizations need to manage four key challenges of ESG ratings: A limited focus on DEI Having accurate, valid data A lack of standardization Subjectivity All of these can lead to ratings that are more judgement scores than a true measure of an organization's commitment to DEI and ESG. Listen in to learn more, including how to identify data that is truly useful for measuring your organization's DEI and ESG success. We discuss how democratizing access to AI will lower the barrier to entry for new applications, and how there is a huge underground open-source AI movement. We discuss roles such as Journalism which may be at least partially immune to these changes. We cover how LLMs can provide the median information on a subject today, but future models can easily have specific tilts or opinions. We cover open-source transcription tool MacWhisper vs paid silicon-valley startup sweetheart Otter.AI (powered by Google Speech to text) and how open-source is winning. Alex discusses AI for medical transcription in his previous role in Babylon Health, and how important AI safety is in this subject. This gets us on to high risk and expert roles - where you need responsibility and connection - and how they may be the last to really shift. We cover how with legal notes you don't have to be 100% correct, you just need to make logical arguments that are legally sound - so our job in creating an AI assisted legal services is easier than medical AI's job. The clerical parts of many roles will start to go in droves over the next 18 months, as many people hate this part of their job and it's easy for LLMs. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/using-ai/message

On today's episode I am pleased to introduce Farah Haque to the podcast. Farah is the current Associate Director of Pharmacy at Babylon Health. Babylon Health is an international digital health service provider that combines artificial intelligence and technology with human medical expertise to create all-in-one healthcare, right from your device. Over the last few years, Babylon has been reaching out to pharmacists to support their clinical services and conduct digital consultations as part of their Advanced Clinical Practitioner team. The beauty of these roles involve being able to work remotely as an autonomous practitioner. Farah was one of the first clinical pharmacists to join Babylon back in 2018. Prior to working at Babylon, she gained experience working in a variety of roles: Community Pharmacist, Hospital Pharmacist, Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Pharmacist, and Prison Pharmacist. This variety has provided her with a solid foundation of skills and experience that has made her who she is today. Though we spend a considerable amount of time discussing Farah's career history, our conversation also involves a deep dive into the following topics: - Asian upbringings and high expectations from family - Growing up in a society where your feelings of self-worth are based on sources outside of yourself - Lack of self-belief and how to alter your mindset - Taking risks and being open to new opportunities A very honest and genuine conversation that resonated with my personal journey into the pharmacy profession. Posted by:  Adam Turteltaub As the business world embraces Artificial Intelligence (AI) it's important for compliance teams to understand what this technology is and what risks is can bring.  In this podcast and at the 2022 HCCA Compliance Institute oversight considerations for ethical AI are addressed by Shawn E. Marchese, Global Head of Compliance; Nakis Urfi, Product Compliance Officer; and Dr. Keith Grimes, Clinical Digital Health & Innovation Director all at Babylon Health. At its root, they explain, AI is about automating tasks that would otherwise require human brain.  This means activities such as pattern recognition and even decision making. The role of AI in healthcare is increasing because there aren't enough people to fill all the positions.  It is already used for predicting which groups are at higher risks and for monitoring changes in X-rays.  And, if you have ever encountered a chat bot, that's AI in practice. Over time they anticipate AI being used in more places to optimize healthcare delivery, summarizing notes and as decision support for prescribing.  It can also, potentially, minimize the risk of false positives and even be used to track regulatory changes. But, with AI come several concerns.  If unsupervised it can make decisions that can't be controlled and have unintended consequences.  Bias is also a persistent problem, especially if the data is not representative of the population.  There have already been several examples of discriminatory behavior in hiring, loans, and facial recognition.  The AI team needs to take steps to ensure that it is feeding the AI accurate data and correcting for biases. So what should the compliance team do?  Stay on top of the AI use in your organization.  Make sure that it is producing accurate results and ensure that there are safeguards in place with human oversight.  Be sure to address the privacy, security and safety concerns to avoid losing trust and damaging your organization's reputation, not to mention some potentially large settlements. Make sure, also, that there is ethical oversight that is cross functional.  There should be a process for raising and reviewing ethical issues, which can come up with some frequency. Listen in to learn more, and then plan on attending their session at the 2022 HCCA Compliance Institute.

Our guest today is Dr Rosie Webster. Rosie has a PhD and an MSc in health psychology. She's currently Science Lead for Zinc's venture builder programme. Prior to Zinc, Rosie worked as a UX researcher at digital health company, Zava, and was Lead User Researcher at Babylon Health. While at Babylon, Rosie established the foundations of an effective Behavioural Science practice, which is partly what we're here to talk about today.Rosie explains that if businesses are interested in delivering impact and making a difference, then social science can be really key.  She says that research, in similar ways to design, is often underestimated and under-utilised in tech.  Our power, she says, lies in understanding the problem and what the right thing to build is. This is a truly user-centred approach that requires trusting in the process and being willing to scrap an idea when the research points in a different direction.Often people don't know what social science is, says Rosie, and equate it to academic research, with the corresponding but erroneous perception that it's slow, when in actual fact it provides answers much more quickly.Rosie explains how she established the beginnings of a behavioural science practice at Babylon Health, with the support of two managers who understood its value and importance. She shares why she wanted to ‘democratise' behavioural research, the benefits of that approach, and how she ‘marketed and sold' behavioural science within the company.User research should utilise the existing academic literature more, “building on the shoulders of giants”, as Rosie calls it, “supercharging” primary research, and using evidence to understand what the solution might be. It's an approach she says results in understanding people deeply, while increasing impact and reducing risk, and without slowing down the fast-paced product development environment. As our conversation draws to an end, Rosie has a final piece of advice for businesses that are genuinely open to achieving impactful outcomes, and recommends two books for people who are looking to bring behavioural science into their work: Engaged by Amy Bucher, and Designing for Behaviour Change by Stephen Wendel.Follow Rosie on Twitter @DrRosieW, and connect with her on LinkedIn.Read an edited version of our conversation which you can read online and also download as a PDF.
