Food is a brilliant unifier across political divides, if we're brave enough to let it be. We all eat. And in this community, regardless of ‘diet type' we all want food to be: AccessibleNutritiousGood qualityGood for the planet in the farming methods used Fair for the farmers - especially small holder farmers! Culturally appropriate and respectfulI don't know if anyone else is sick of all the nit picking on socials about food and ‘which whole food does it better' for our health and the planet - when most people are wondering if they can stretch the budget for those blueberries or that mince this week, but I am. Tammi Jonas has led the charge for many years, in making things better across all of these aspects of a fair food system and we talk this week about how much we can all do to mobilise - taking that active ‘next step', to ensure a fairer food system is forged for all. She is an agroecologist in principle and in practice, farming heritage-breed pigs, cattle, and garlic with her bricoleur husband Stuart at Jonai Farms and Meatsmiths on the unceded lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung, where they share rent-free land with the young First and Second Nations market gardeners of Tumpinyeri Growers. Tammi is the focal point for farmers with the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA), advocating for everyone's right to participate in decisions about food and agriculture systems. In 2024, she completed a PhD on the rise of agroecology in Australia, and collectivising to deal with the problem of the state, as well as publishing a cookbook to help everyone Eat Like the Jonai.Thank you to this month's show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I've ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@cleannectarine is giving you 20% off the beauty and personal care ranges with all orders over $99. Today's convo is with the incredibly passionate Tammi Jonas. What the Jonas family are doing on Jonai Farms has been very well documented in print, television and radio, so we touched on this only a little to give some background before delving deep into discussing agroecology, their involvement with the Food Sovereignty Alliance, CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and where things are headed in the future. The passion she has for her farm, family, and the community is undeniable and it is an exciting vision for the future of agriculture. The Jonai (aka Tammi, Stuart, Oscar, Antigone & Atticus Jonas) tired of choosing between saving the world or savouring it, so figured out a way to do both. In May 2011, they left their rather farm-like suburban Melbourne environs behind, took a shortcut across America to glean wisdom from a range of ethical farmers, and landed some months later on Dja Dja Wurrung country at what would become Jonai Farms, 69 acres at Eganstown, just outside the beautiful town of Daylesford, to raise happy, tasty, heritage-breed Large Black pigs on pasture. Jonai Farms enacts food sovereignty, which asserts everyone's right to culturally appropriate, nutritious and delicious food grown in ecologically sound and ethical ways, and our right to collectively determine our own food and agriculture systems. They are a resilient, diverse family farm that focuses on living a life in common with nature, and managing animals for optimum soil health as multiple species are rotated around the farm to grow fertility and diversity on the paddocks. After being the first farm in Australia to crowdfund major infrastructure in 2013 to build a licensed butcher's shop on the farm, they succeeded again in 2014 and built a licensed curing room and commercial kitchen to make farmstead cured meats and a range of charcuterie, as well as bone stocks and lard-based soap, to ultimately deliver a full nose to tail no-waste offering. ‘Waste' from the boning room includes bones after pate and bone broth making, which are then pyrolysed into bone-char and used as fertiliser for their small commercial crop of garlic, taking them from 'paddock to plate' to 'paddock to paddock'. -- Thank you for watching. Now this was a passionate conversation! Today we have a chat with Nick Holiday from Belvedere Farm and cover a wide range of topics including Agroecology, and why there's an important distinction between that and regenerative agriculture, the pressure on ethical farmers to follow more industrialised methods and why they are resisting. We also dispel some myths about egg production and the important difference between “free range” and “pasture raised”, which continues on from the conversation in our last episode with Stuart Andrews. The idea of community is a vital part of this convo, and Nick is a strong and outspoken advocate for ethical producers working together and competing with larger commercial producers rather than each other. Nick and Brydie Holliday are Belvedere Farm, an agroecological farm caring for a mix of owned and leased land on unceded Jinibara country near Maleny. Their main focus is looking after country, building community and destroying factory farming and the systems that support it. As a byproduct of that work, they produce delicious pasture-raised eggs, heritage-breed pork and grass fed and finished beef. This convo gets a little controversial at times and calls out some major players in the industry. Through it all, you will grow to love Nick as we do for putting his everything into everything he does. Enjoy. - - Thank you for watching. On today's show we spoke to Tammi Jonas about the ongoing campaign to allow small-scale animal farmers to have their farming methods permitted under the law. Currently these style of farms are considered "intensive agriculture" which are not permitted in certain areas. Have a look at the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance website for more info.Dorelle Havilland joined us next to chat about her restaurant The Moldy Fig. We spoke about her travels around New Orleans, the differences between Creole and Cajun cuisine, and how she's re-creating these food styles here on Lygon St.Our good buddy Hannah Dupree also popped into the studio, to explore a rather interesting pairing: tea and cheese. Hannah has run Storm in a Teacup for years, and on this occasion we tried matching two styles of tea to specific styles of cheese. And guess what? It's valid!

We speak with Daryl Taylor, a survivor of the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Kinglake. In 2009 when that enormous tragedy hit, Daryl already had over a decade's experience in community and organisational development roles. And since that day in February he has been involved on many informal and formal community based recovery and advocacy projects. His work has been acknowledged with 13 state and national awards and best practice commendations. And his experiences in the aftermath of the fires deeply inform his work now - and have lead him to reflect on the creative chaos of bottom up community-led responses, compared to what he saw as poorly fitting and disempowering government responses. In 2015 he completed with his colleague Helen Goodman a two year report Place-Based and Community-Led: Specific Disaster Preparedness and Generalisable Community Resilience which he hopes can help communities learn from Kinglake's experiences. Later in the show we talk with small farmer Tammi Jonas about her battle with regulators that consider her and other free-range farmer operations legally the same as huge battery operations. She mentions this petition.

'Ethicurean' farmer Tammi Jonas joins us in studio to talk about the problems with your supermarket's bacon, and more ethical and tasty alternatives. Tammi with her family runs Jonai Farms in Central Vic raising pastured rare breed pigs, and she's also something of an agrarian intellectual who writes, talks and organises towards a regenerative, ethical food system, including being the current President of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance.
