Here are some key takeaways from our insightful conversation: 1. Sustainability Through Innovation: Sherri's efforts to create Aussie wool pellets not only provide a sustainable solution for wool byproduct from the shearing season but also offer numerous benefits for soil health and agriculture. The product acts as a slow-release nitrogen source, enhances water retention, aerates the soil, and serves as a natural deterrent for snails and slugs, making it a game-changer in the horticultural industry. 2. Entrepreneurial Inspiration: Sherri's journey from creating Aussie wool pellets to winning awards and participating in business programs showcases the power of entrepreneurship and the impact of networking. Her commitment to sustainable farming and leaving a legacy of regenerative agriculture for future generations is truly inspiring for aspiring entrepreneurs and environmental advocates. 3. Soil Reciprocity and Education: Sherri's passion for soil health and her dedication to educating and engaging with communities about the benefits of using wool pellets for gardening and farming is a testament to the importance of nurturing a reciprocal relationship with the soil. Her advocacy for sustainable practices and her commitment to the soil's well-being invite us to rethink our approach to agriculture and gardening. An innovation to utilize otherwise waste wool to create a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, that has multiple benefits to the soil. One of my recent posts has one that's classic SherriHow amazing wool is. The wool I'm using is not wool that we wear but rather wool that used to be used as insulation and carpet but society and business sent it overseas and now as a farmer, we can not cover the costs associated with shearing with the sale of our wool so something needed to be done incorporating wool pellets into the soil no matter what type of soil you have can be beneficial. ___________ Social Media: Website: https://aussiewoolpellets.com.au/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Aussie-Wool-Pellets/100094861758260/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aussiewoolpellets/ ----------- Get the guide - https://secretsofthesoil.com/7-ways/ As the host of the Secrets of the Soil podcast, I've had the privilege of speaking with some of the most innovative and inspiring experts in regenerative agriculture. This week I am sharing a podcast I was interviewed on so I am in the guest seat! Remember, we all have the power to shape the future of our food system. Let's make choices that nourish the soil, our bodies, and our planet. Here are 3 key takeaways from our conversation on how to improve soil health and create a sustainable food system: 1️⃣ Biodiversity is crucial: I emphasized that promoting biodiversity is a key principle of regenerative farming. Monoculture soy farms harm wildlife, while regenerative farms with diverse crops and animals actually support wildlife conservation. Let's prioritize biodiversity in our agricultural practices for the benefit of both nature and ourselves. 2️⃣ Choose better food, for yourself and the environment: I pointed out that the current price system for organic food is an illusion. Paying more for higher nutritional value and quality is actually cheaper in the long run. By supporting farmers who practice regenerative farming and avoiding mass-produced, chemically-treated food, we can contribute to a healthier food system. 3️⃣ Take control of your choices: Consumers have the power to drive change in the food system. By buying directly from farmers, asking questions about the origin and production methods of your food, and supporting innovative post-COVID food access solutions, we can create a demand for healthier, sustainably-grown food. Let's make conscious buying decisions and be part of the positive change we want to see in the world. He discusses the various motivations behind landscape rehydration, such as erosion or waterlogging, and how some landholders are looking to improve their farms and build natural capital. Jono highlights how visual aspects of waterways often overshadow other factors like grazing management that impact landscape function. Unlike prescriptive industrial farming, the approach discussed in this episode considers the unique aspects of each place. The conversation also delves into the historical perspective and mindset of farmers who prioritize clearing land and draining water for farming purposes, acknowledging the criticism while recognizing the need for feeding the world and utilizing land. The younger mindset and innovative approaches of individuals, including children showcasing business ideas on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, are shaping problem-solving in agriculture. The episode addresses misconceptions about farmers and emphasizes that they are doing their best with the knowledge they had, evolving and learning about soil health and innovation. The use of farm automation, such as drones, is explored as a way to save time and redirect efforts into marketing and business growth.  Jono discusses the concept of "living labs" where research is derived from farms, bridging the gap between theory and practice. The empowerment of farmers to treat their farms as research labs and experiment with different methods is highlighted, along with the sense of community and shared values that come with engaging in this process. The episode also stresses the importance of considering the broader community when making changes or taking actions, using the example of a farmer's impact on others in terms of water usage and environmental factors within a catchment. Involving the community is seen as challenging but necessary for achieving the best outcomes.    Who is Jono Forrest General Manager of Mulloon Consulting, working with a team of Landscape Planners to restore landscape function, with a particular focus on landscape rehydration. In this podcast episode, host Regen Ray Milidoni speaks with Dr. Eric Berg about the importance of microbes in soil, plants, and our bodies. The conversation begins with the difficulty of finding truly nutrient-dense food in today's world, as much of what is available is heavily processed and lacking in beneficial microbes. Dr. Berg emphasizes that the microbes in the soil and in our food are essential to our health and well-being, and that it is important to consider this aspect when making food choices. The discussion then turns to the medical profession and its approach to nutrition. Dr. Berg laments that nutrition is often given little emphasis in medical training and that the healthcare field as a whole is not focused on promoting true health and healing. He explains that this is why he covers a wide range of opposing viewpoints in his content creation, and why he has also turned his attention to farming and agriculture. The conversation then focuses on the importance of the microbiome in food, with Dr. Berg noting that pasteurization and other forms of sterilization can remove beneficial microbes from food. He suggests that incorporating more raw foods into one's diet can be helpful, as can consuming foods grown on healthy soils that are rich in microbes. This is particularly important for vegetables, which can be a significant source of beneficial microbes. Throughout the episode, Dr. Berg stresses the importance of the microbiome in all aspects of health and wellness, from the soil to the food we eat to our own bodies. He encourages listeners to pay more attention to this aspect of their health and to make choices that promote a healthy microbiome. 52: Solving the Soil Crisis: Navigating the Gap Between Research and Action with Adam O'Toole

Soil is a crucial component of many ecosystems, and healthy soils are necessary for the growth of plants, the provision of food and clean water, and the regulation of climate. However, it seems that the bureaucrats and funders of the research and development work are frustrated with the lack of progress made by the research community in solving the problem despite decades of research on soil erosion, soil carbon, soil aggregation, soil fertility, and soil biology. There is likely a gap between the research and the implementation of solutions on the ground. To focus on the soil as a part of their mission is likely due to the interconnectedness of soil health with other environmental and societal issues. The European Commission has invested significant funding into a "soil mission" as part of its five main missions for the next decade. These missions include adapting to climate change, finding a cure for cancer, creating sustainable cities, protecting oceans and waterways and clean water, and saving soils. The soil mission aims to address the problem of soil degradation and loss, which is a significant environmental and economic concern. The specific plans and actions of the soil mission are not specified, but it likely involves research and development, conservation and restoration efforts, and promoting sustainable land use practices.  ---------- Who is Adam O'Toole? Adam O'Toole is a soil scientist and communicator working for the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy. The power of Regenerative Agriculture is not in just one thing. It's a combination that includes the head, heart, and research to create solutions for the future. Who is Terry McCosker Terry is an internationally acclaimed teacher and has worked in research, extension, and property management in both government and private sectors for almost 55 years. In his research era, Terry published over 40 papers and made several world-first discoveries in the 1980s in the fields of bull fertility, ruminant nutrition, and pasture ecology. Terry co-founded RCS over 35 years ago which has set the benchmark for capacity building in rural and regional Australia. He is responsible for the introduction of the GrazingforProfit™ School into Australia which now has over 8,000 graduates and has changed grazing, livestock, and business management nationally. Terry has chaired the Australian Beef Expo, has sat on numerous advisory committees, and has been nominated for many awards. Terry was described in the Australian Farm Journal editorial in July 2010 as follows: “It is hard to imagine the mental toughness and commitment McCosker and his early farmer adopters had to muster to withstand the flood of criticism from within conventional agricultural science circles. … McCosker's ideas took farming out of a war with nature to an association with it. He introduced Australian farmers to the concept of ecosystem health and developed methods of measuring it alongside financial health. Critically he introduced the concept of farm family well-being and welcomed female partners, siblings and parents into courses about decision making.” ---------- Website/s: https://carbonlink.com.au/ https://www.rcsaustralia.com.au/ ---------- Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/RCSAustralia/ https://www.facebook.com/carbonlink ---------- You can also reach out to Terry via phone: 1800 356 004Dig Deeper Club: https://soillearningcenter.com/digdeeperSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
