Polarisation is a defining feature of contemporary politics, raising concerns among many observers. People on the left and right—liberals and conservatives—often seem to inhabit entirely different worlds, holding fundamentally distinct perspectives on reality and morality. But what underpins these divisions? Are they rooted in deep-seated moral intuitions that we are born with or develop in childhood? Or do they stem from our present circumstances and the media landscape that shapes our understanding of the world? In this episode, we explore groundbreaking research by two scholars from the UCL Department of Political Science—Dr Jack Blumenau and Prof Ben Lauderdale. Their work offers fresh insights into the nature of political disagreement, challenging conventional wisdom about its origins. Jack join us to discuss these findings. In the run-up to this year's federal election, issues of community safety, polarisation and faltering social cohesion are coming to the fore. Advocates say migrant and refugee communities are feeling increasing division, and fear they will experience the affects of that in a federal election campaign.

Peter Khalil, Member for Wills and Australia's first special envoy on social cohesion shares insights into his role and fostering social harmony at a time of increased Islamophobia and antisemitism.
Our guest Rick Kuhn explains the results of the German election. Rick is a socialist economist and political analyst. He is the author of a biography of Marxist economist Henryk Grossman, for which he won the Deutscher Prize. In understanding the German election, the key word is "polarisation". The fascist AfD have received their best vote yet, of over 20%. Meanwhile the anti-racist left party, Die Linke, tapped into a movement of young antifascists and picked up 9%. The centre ruling coalition has collapsed after years of economic stagnation and migrant-bashing, and has been replaced by the conservative Christian Democrats who court the far-right. Our second episode in Season 2 - and what an extraordinary episode too. My guest, Sanam Naraghi Anderlini, MBE—peace strategist, CEO of the International Civil Society Action Network, one of the few trained female UN peace negotiators, and host of the If You Were in Charge Podcast—had to reschedule this very recording due to a last-minute invitation to attend President Jimmy Carter's funeral. Her connection to one of history's great peacebuilders adds a poignant and inspiring dimension to this conversation. In this episode, Sanam introduces the concept of “quantum identities”—how our sense of self evolves with our environment—and explains why embracing this fluidity is key to fostering belonging. Drawing on nearly 30 years of peace building experience and her insights as a mother of identical twins, she explores how the dynamics of conflict and connection resonate in both personal and global contexts. Through captivating stories and transformative insights, Sanam shares practical strategies to navigate division, embrace complexity, and cultivate belonging in an increasingly fractured world. A powerful conversation that will leave you inspired to connect more deeply with yourself and others. Is it possible that 2024 might have been the year of 'Peak polarisation' around the world and that from hereon in humanity might grow less divided, not more; that we might use technology and social media wisely to bring the best of ourselves to the table, becoming the best we can be in service to life? Audrey Tang certainly thinks so in this wide-deep, mind-expanding conversation, we explore everything from the dual nature of AGI to the potential for liberational education that gives young people a sense of agency, interaction and the common good, to ways to rescue democracy to recipes for sound sleep. Until recently, Audrey Tang was Digital Minister of Taiwan: the country's first transgender, post-gender, and youngest ever Minister of state. In this role, Tang helped bring the .g0v movement into the mainstream and brought with it the concept that democracy could be a social technology with a focus for good. In 2014, at the time of the Sunflower Revolution in which Tang took part, confidence in the government was measured at 9%. Six years later, it was up to 73%. In that time, there had been shifts in everything from the concept of education, to healthcare, to the provision of broadband, to the online submission of taxes. Then the pandemic hit and, by any measure, Taiwan's response was one of the most flexible, emotionally and politically literate in the world. With no need for lockdown, they kept public confidence high and the death rate low. More recently, the Government began 'pre-bunking' the possibility of foreign interference in the General Election of 2024 and the end result saw all three parties agree that it had been a free and fair election, with a population who felt heard and engaged. How different is this to the western experience of maximal polarisation. Since the end of May 2024, Audrey Tang has been Taiwan's Ambassador at Large in charge of Cyberspace Governance, instrumental in bringing ideas of a post-polarised world to those who dance amongst the levers of power - and doing so with charm, grace and a fierce, sharp intellect that makes the balance between polarities feel like the only possible way forward. Audrey is probably not entirely alone in swimming both deep in the world of code and stretching wide across the understanding of what it takes to bring humanity to a place of agency, connection and sufficiency, but I don't know of anyone else who has this as a life's goal. This was the most mind-expanding, heart-firing conversation imaginable, and it was an astonishing joy and an honour. I hope it inspires you to be part of a growing, evolving, re-connected world.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins believes AUKUS is not in New Zealand's best interest. His party has ruled out joining the transnational pact between Australia, the UK, and the US. The current Government's considering joining pillar two of the agreement - with non-nuclear aspects. Chris Hipkins told Mike Hosking we should continue to have good, strategic relationships – and recognise some other partners are not happy with AUKUS. “If you look at the way it's perceived internationally, including in our region, it's perceived as part of the polarisation of geopolitics in our region.” Meanwhile, the idea or a capital gains tax was also talked about. Hipkins says we're closer to seeing public appetite for reform. “When we started talking about this 15 years ago as the Labour Party, we were the only people talking about it. Now everybody's saying actually New Zealand's tax system needs reform.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Next month's presidential election has been called the most consequential in modern US history. American voters seem polarised, but political scientist Damon Linker believes that there is common ground.

Functional Neurological Disorder, or FND, is the most common disorder you've probably never heard of. Some say it might be as common as MS or Parkinson's and yet it's not well known even by many medical professionals. It can cause seizures, paralysis, convulsions and changes in sensation, as well as pain, fatigue and memory difficulties. It's caused by a problem with the system in the brain that connects us consciously into our bodies, leaving sufferers unable to access their bodies properly. Because it doesn't show up on scans and tests it is often not diagnosed effectively, and patients can face difficulties accessing the help they need or even being believed that their symptoms are real.Claudia Hammond sits in on a consultation at the Maudsley Hospital between Emma, a new patient who is having exactly those problems, and Mark Edwards, Professor of Neurology and Interface Disorders at King's College London. She also meets Callum Alexander, a recovered patient who now volunteers for the charity FND Hope. He was referred by Mark for specialist neurophysiotherapy with Glenn Nielsen at St George's University Hospital, which had immediate results. Glenn tells us that FND can cause the brain to become excessively focused on actions are normally automatic, such as walking, and that redirecting the brain's attention can be one way of alleviating it.Meanwhile, Emma is relieved she finally has a name to put to her condition and Mark is pushing for more positive diagnoses of FND.Back in the studio, Claudia is joined by Kavita Vedhara, Professor of Health Psychology at Cardiff University. With increasing polarisation in the US in the run up to the forthcoming presidential election, she presents a study that sheds light on how we might view people who are more nuanced in their approach to controversial topics. You might expect people who are able to express both sides of an argument to thrive in social situations. However, this new research suggests that people with nuanced views are seen as less likeable than those with polarised views, even by those who agree with that person's ultimate position. How does that impact our chances of being able to have reasoned political debates? The 2025 All in the Mind Awards are now open for nominations. You can nominate individuals, professionals and groups who have helped you in your hardest times.Claudia catches up with ZeZe Sohawon who nominated her psychiatrist Dr Claire Purcell for an award in 2021. Since then ZeZe has set up a youth autism and mental health charity, Emotion Dysregulation and Autism, helping autistic young people who struggle with their emotions leading to mental health problems. The charity is about to start delivering a peer support programme in Birmingham hospitals, and she's done all of this while studying for a Neuroscience degree. This year she's a judge for the All in the Mind Awards and tells Claudia why she thinks people should take part. You can find out more about the awards in the programme or by going to bbc.co.uk/radio4/allinthemind where you'll also find full terms. The decline of local journalism in the United States is becoming a more pressing issue by the day. Since 2005, the country has lost more than 2,500 newspapers and 43,000 journalists, primarily due to a drop in revenue from advertising amid strong online competition. More than 200 counties in the US are considered “news deserts” with no local newspaper. In 1,500 others there is only one regional source of information, often a weekly publication. The situation is dire: one in five Americans now lives in an area with no local journalism. FRANCE 24's Pierrick Leurent and Wassim Cornet report.

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive we are joined by Aftab Erfan as we explore cultivating resilience in the face of polarisation. We start by addressing the basics: what is polarisation and how is it caused? As Aftab delves into these questions, she shares how polarisation within a team can be beneficial when it leads to creative tension. However, finding the correct balance between creative and destructive tension is crucial, and Aftab shares how leaders can facilitate this. Listen as Aftab shares practical strategies and practices that leaders can instil within their teams to achieve this balance. Aftab emphasises the importance of encouraging flexibility within your teams, so that when faced with conflict, the result is enhanced resilience, rather than destruction. Today we're bringing you a bonus episode on the U.S. elections from Crisis Group's Ripple Effect podcast. In this episode of Ripple Effect, Michael and Steve talk with Rachel Kleinfeld, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, about the state of U.S. democracy and the risk of political violence as the U.S. heads toward the November elections. They break down how we should understand polarisation in U.S. society. They assess the potential risk factors that could contribute to political violence in the run-up and aftermath of the November elections and how they compare to the 2020 elections. They also talk about what politicians on both sides of the aisle can do to mitigate the risk of political violence in the near term. For more, check out Rachel's piece Polarization, Democracy, and Political Violence in the United States: What the Research Says.
