Most people think they're mature but how they think and what they allow and accept shows the truth. People go through life being comfortable where they've always been, which leads to stagnation. If you are comfortable in the way you've always been you will hinder your life and your relationships. No matter how they struggle, most people are on the same paths doing things the very same for a lifetime, and in return, getting the same or similar results in their lives. Paul Gruenwald, chief economist at S and P Global Ratings, sees trouble ahead for the economy early in 2023, as it moves through a recession and adjusts to slowing growth that is likely to be negative early on before picking up in May or June. Also on the show, Chris Oberbeck, chairman and chief executive at Saratoga Investment Corp. -- a large business-development company -- talks about the edge that BDCs have given income investors during today's sluggish market conditions and discusses why he thinks that advantage could grow as the market works through a potential recession. The Far Middle episode 80 features a co-dedication to both the 1980 U.S. Men's Ice Hockey Team, and to the incomparable and prolific Jerry Rice. Nick notes Rice’s collegiate career at Mississippi Valley State and the offensive innovation of Coach Archie Cooley. The topic of innovation sparks the start of this episode’s connections as Nick moves through a host of topics like Rice weaving through a secondary. While innovation represents growth, Nick zeroes in on the elitist organization, The Club of Rome, and their best-selling environmental book, The Limits to Growth. Nick looks at how the Club and its anti-capitalism/industrialization tenets have matriculated to the Church of Climate today and anti-growth initiatives disguised under the mask of sustainability. Nick notes the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, “outright prescriptions to stop growth and regress or reduce growth,” says Nick. He then questions how the term sustainability, a term so nebulous and hard to define, became so prevalent across society today. What’s not hard to define is the anti-growth, anti-free market ideology of the Left, and the linear sequencing of their trap. Nick proceeds to walk through how that sequence begins with a major policy that can impact almost everything across the economy, using the slew of energy and climate policies pushed by the Left as today’s biggest example. These policies create energy scarcity, which in turn leads to energy inflation and then overall inflation as the cost of energy is an input in nearly every product and service. Overall inflation leads to central banks fast and furiously raising interest rates. And when interest rates are raised, so too is the cost of carrying government debt. Skyrocketing debt service leads to either: increased deficits; higher taxes; and/or, reining in discretionary spending. Nick asks which of these three outcomes do you see happening as America experiences this sequencing in real time, and explains this is the trap of the Left’s no-growth approach. Nick concludes that policies coming from the elite class—whether it be The Club of Rome or the UN—have created a situation where society is checking in but can’t check out, which brings to mind the Eagles’ December 1976 release of Hotel California.

So why aren't you growing? You're not growing because you refuse to get uncomfortable. You're not growing because you refuse to engage in new experiences. You're stagnant, way too deep into your comfort zone. Routines are great, habits are great and they do help us move forward... but we can end up getting stuck! Here's what you need to realize: Almost everything you need to achieve your goals requires new skills, habits, knowledge, and experiences. To go from where you are to where you want to be, you must do things you've never done before. You must be willing to get uncomfortable because discomfort is the only path to growth. I once wrote a rejection email and had it posted online by the recipient. Sounds dramatic, doesn't it? Sometimes the thought of rejecting someone or something, by saying no, sounds too dramatic. So we say yes. And then we start to feel resentment, we stop showing up, or we drop the ball on important responsibilities. Sometimes we have to learn to just say no. In this bite-sized episode I give you the whole rejection email story (it has a happy ending!) and my reasoning behind why a generous no is so much better than a guilted yes. This week, we have a pep talk style conversation inspired by the Biosphere 2. Sounds out there, I know. But I think you will vibe with this idea. The Biosphere is essentially an artificial, controlled environment built inside of a dome which includes various types of ecosystems. It is designed for research and experimentation, and one piece of information that they discovered upon its inception was all about TREES! The trees planted inside of the sphere would grow to a certain height and then topple over. After investigating, researchers discovered that the trees needed wind in order to properly grow and develop, otherwise they were too weak to survive. As you can imagine, this can be a powerful metaphor for the human journey.
