Food is a brilliant unifier across political divides, if we're brave enough to let it be. We all eat. Playful Inquiry - that's the student-centered approach discussed in this episode about re-imagining curriculum. Angela and Lauren welcome Soobin Oh, Co-Director of Teaching Preschool Partners (TPP), a nonprofit that engages with schools to nurture inclusive, inquisitive, and collaborative school communities. In the playful inquiry promoted by TPP, educators are encouraged to let go of control and instead to be flexible and listen, responding to each child's interests, aspirations, cultural background, and linguistic capabilities. Classrooms become places for curiosity, joy, and possibility to thrive. Families are ideally involved in this concept of curriculum with the cultural wealth that they can bring in dialogue with the classroom. The result is a curriculum that revolves around collaboration, a culturally relevant curriculum for all grade levels. Makini and Breanna emphasize the crucial need for representation in therapy for Black individuals, driven by their personal experiences and the stigmatization of mental health within their communities. They discuss the common challenges faced by Black clients, including undiagnosed learning differences and the impact of generational trauma, and stress the importance of early intervention and validation. Both women highlight the normalization of various forms of trauma in Black communities, exacerbated by historical factors like colonization and slavery, and advocate for culturally relevant therapeutic services to promote healing. The importance of creating a supportive environment for abuse survivors and breaking down the stigma around mental health is underscored, with a focus on the healing power of storytelling and social connection. Additionally, Breanna challenges the idea of predisposed health issues in the Black community by linking them to historical trauma and social constructs, advocating for addressing these root causes through education and therapy. Breanna Chanelle Phillip is a dedicated and passionate registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist of Grenadian descent with almost a decade of experience working with youth and their families in various capacities. Breanna is experienced in advocating for and with Black youth and families as they navigate systems with histories deeply rooted in anti-Black racism and oppression. As the owner of Breanna Chanelle Therapeutic Services, Breanna prioritizes the mental and emotional wellness of Black individuals, families and communities by offering culturally relevant therapeutic services and programs that address the unique mental wellness challenges within Black communities. She's been seen on TVO, City News, Toronto Star and more. Key Takeaways: - The lack of representation in therapy for Black people led to a desire to become a therapist - Normalized traumatic experiences in the Black community include emotional, sexual, physical, and spiritual abuse - Prioritizing mental and emotional wellness in Black communities through culturally relevant therapy is crucial - Support for abuse survivors is essential, emphasizing the need for a supportive environment and the healing power of storytelling - Expressing emotions and seeking therapy are important for overcoming trauma and achieving healing - Historical trauma and social constructs impact health disparities within the Black community Stay connected with Breanna online: Website Instagram Stay connected with us online: MakiniSmith.com Legacy Leavers Media Facebook Instagram Threads Youtube LinkedIn Books Send feedback/questions to info@awalkinmystilettos.com Submit guest suggestions HERE Make a donation to keep the show going! Don't change the goal.” - Liz{00:25:34} “I think it's about finding those crosshatches of how I bring content to bear behind a really powerful cultural moment? And then underneath that is selling this, you know, anthemic story around the future of soda.” - AndyKey Takeaways: To create a successful omnichannel strategy, brands should focus on aligning their growth ambitions with their sales and marketing strategies. When considering different marketing channels, brands must have a clear understanding of their objectives and measurable goals. The balance between technical expertise and creativity is crucial for executing a successful omnichannel marketing strategy.Brands should prioritize cultural relevance and fluidity in their marketing efforts to connect with consumers meaningfully.Empowering employees and trusting them to make data-driven decisions is key for adapting to changing consumer behaviors and cultural moments.Associated Links:Learn more about Liz Mayer and The Partnering GroupLearn more about Andy Judd and PoppiListen to more Step by Step episodes.Have you checked out our YouTube channel yet?Subscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce world!Listen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? Weighing in on culturally relevant topics, like faith, as an entrepreneur requires staying authentic to your personal brand, which will attract the right clients and repel the wrong ones. In this microsode of "The Business of You," Rachel & Christy delve into the topic of discussing culturally relevant topics in a business setting. Rachel shares her journey of gradually incorporating discussions about faith into her client meetings over the years. On the flip side, she avoids discussing politics where she doesn't want to further the growing divide, opting to emphasize inclusivity and the focus on leaving a positive impact through her business interactions. When discussing taboo topics like faith and politics, it's important to choose what really and truly aligns with your personal or business brand and steer clear of what doesn't. An openness about your personal convictions can foster profound connections, but a flippant comment that's not well thought through can do serious reputation damage. Find out how Rachel's openness about a “taboo” topic has led to deeper connections and ongoing business relationships with clients. Quotes “I decided a couple of years ago that I wanted to be more open about it [my faith]." “My personal belief system is that, you know, we're all here to kind of make the world a better place.” “About a year and a half ago, when we did this last version of the brand ID website, I decided to just put a very subtle, Bible verse in the footer of our website.” “In the US, discussing things like faith and politics is really taboo, but then on the personal brand side, the more we discuss our values and our convictions, the more we attract the right clients, and the more we may detract the wrong people from working with us.” “John 3:16 is 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.' So, I've been thinking about it for a while, not so much a Bible quote per se, but just how do I start talking about my faith?” “After all the work that we put out in the world, you know, we're building websites, but ultimately I think at the core of our work is really helping people get clear on their purpose in life and then helping them earn a living from doing it.” “What matters is, how we are living our lives, how we're conducting ourselves every day, how we're making people feel through conducting business with us, how we're leaving them with results as clients, right? And the business owners we work with, we tell them the same thing that those are the things that are important about brand building. How are you making your people feel when they're interacting with your business at every opportunity? Whether it's email, whether it's phone, whether it's Zoom, how are you leaving them feeling after that interaction with you?” “The more I shared, about my personal self and my personal belief, the closer our relationship grew and from a business perspective that has just led to ongoing business and a lot of referral business.”

In the first half-hour, Tiokasin speaks with Frank Buffalo Hyde (Onondaga and Nez Perce), one of the five Native artists featured in the upcoming exhibition, “Sensing Sasquatch,” which will be on view March 2, 2024 - January 12, 2025 at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. Native peoples of the Plateau have long known about, encountered, depicted and told stories about Sasquatch, and the exhibition will examine the primate-like, reclusive and elusive being in the context of the High Desert region through an Indigenous lens. Frank Buffalo Hyde grew up in New York on his mother's Onondaga reservation. He began exhibiting his artwork at 18 years old as a hobby. He began taking his artwork career more seriously when he attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. His artwork has been described as “Bold, Culturally Relevant and Inspiring!” featuring vibrant colors and animal subjects, most commonly buffaloes and his tribe. Frank's way of creating his artwork is to combine numerous aspects of modern culture with the internet and technology and combine it with Native American ideas. Frank has stated that the intention of his artwork is to highlight the social and political problems today's society. In addition, issues in today's society and in the lives of Native Americans is what drives him to continue with his career. Frank's goal for his artwork is to change the way people perceive Native American artwork and abolish any stereotypes that follow Native American artwork. He hopes to teach aspiring Native American artists to make the artwork that they want to make and not worry about their artwork being "Indian enough" or "Native enough.” Frank says, “Indigenous people are now at a point where they have to be dealt with … the popular culture, and the world can no longer ignore what we know and who we are.” More about Frank can be found at https://frankbuffalohyde.com/ In the second half-hour, Tiokasin welcomes back our friend Ed Kabotie with an important update. "The continued contamination of lands occupied by the Indigenous nations of the Colorado Plateau must be recognized for what it is: a continuation of the genocidal philosophies of Manifest Destiny. Many issues that Indigenous people face remain out of sight, out of mind to the general public,” says Ed. Ed Kabotie is an artist and musician from the Hopi village of Shungopavi and the Tewa village of Khap'o Owinge. He considers himself to be an “edu-tainer,” combining visual art, music, and education for his lectures and performances about “Alter-Native History” and issues related to the Indigenous people and lands of the four corner states region. Ed is also an event organizer and, along with his band Tha ‘Yoties and the generous support of nonprofits and committed friends, has held events that feature the Native voices in his homeland. Ed's solo music incorporates acoustic guitar, Native American flute, harmonica, percussion and voice. His lyrics are sung in English, Hopi and Tewa, and are often written in a storytelling fashion. Ed describes the music as “Nu-Native,” utilizing contemporary instrumentation as a vehicle to share the virtues of his Indigenous heritage, as well as our past and present struggles with colonialism. Today I talked to Nettrice R. Gaskins about Techno-Vernacular Creativity and Innovation: Culturally Relevant Making Inside and Outside of the Classroom (MIT Press, 2021). The growing maker movement in education has become an integral part of both STEM and STEAM learning, tapping into the natural DIY inclinations of creative people as well as the educational power of inventing or making things. And yet African American, Latino/a American, and Indigenous people are underrepresented in maker culture and education. In this book, Nettrice Gaskins proposes a novel approach to STEAM learning that engages students from historically marginalized communities in culturally relevant and inclusive maker education. Techno-vernacular creativity (TVC) connects technical literacy, equity, and culture, encompassing creative innovations produced by ethnic groups that are often overlooked. TVC uses three main modes of activity: reappropriation, remixing, and improvisation. Gaskins looks at each of the three modes in turn, guiding readers from research into practice. Drawing on real-world examples, she shows how TVC creates dynamic learning environments where underrepresented ethnic students feel that they belong. Students who remix computationally, for instance, have larger toolkits of computational skills with which to connect cultural practices to STEAM subjects; reappropriation offers a way to navigate cultural repertoires; improvisation is firmly rooted in cultural and creative practices. Finally, Gaskins explores an equity-oriented approach that makes a distinction between conventional or dominant pedagogical approaches and culturally relevant or responsive making methods and practices. She describes TVC habits of mind and suggests methods of instructions and projects. Mentioned in this episode: “Underwater Dreams,” 2014 film directed by Mary Mazzio Dr. Gaskins' collages, generative AI portrait of Greg Tate, links to Romare Bearden, and more Nettrice Gaskins is an African American digital artist, academic, cultural critic and advocate of STEAM fields. Get ready to dive deep into the text as we seek to unearth raw diamonds and discover the hidden gems within the Scriptures. In this episode, Stephanie emphasizes the importance of understanding the cultural context in which the Bible was written. Our generation, with its global cross-cultural interactions, has become acutely aware of the otherness of Jesus' culture. And that awareness fuels our desire to comprehend the culture of scripture in a new and profound way. Stephanie encourages us to consider the global cross-cultural interactions we engage in every day, whether at work, home, or online. She highlights the importance of understanding the culture of Scripture, especially in our generation that effortlessly navigates a diverse and interconnected world. As we explore Jesus' initial audience and their Jewish culture, we will experience the fresh spiritual flavors woven into the gospels. Drawing inspiration from Tim Keller, Stephanie emphasizes how cultural awareness is essential for authentic Christian living. She reminds us that the authors of the four canonical gospels never anticipated the gentile church that would emerge over the last 2000 years. Just as they navigated a different world, we must appreciate the nuances of their culture to fully grasp the essence of their teachings. Just as they wrote without knowledge of the centuries of gentile church that would follow, we must recognize the cultural nuances they embraced and unfold them within our modern context. Join us on this guided tour through Scripture as we make the 1st-century Jewish culture accessible to our modern, gentile Western minds. Stephanie's deep knowledge and passion for Jewish culture, combined with her personal stories, will engage and enlighten you. So join us on this adventure, as we unearth the spices that flavor the gospel and invite Jesus to weave His spirit into our own stories. Gospel Spice is the podcast that will challenge, inspire, and transform your understanding of the Scriptures. Stephanie's own journey, from being an atheist in France to encountering Jesus and living a life of faith, adds a relatable and personal touch to the episode. Her experiences as a French atheist turned follower of Jesus, combined with her international travels, have sharpened her ability to decipher local cultures and understand the essence of each unique context. So get ready to embark on this enlightening and transformative journey with Gospel Spice. Prepare to encounter Jesus in a way that resonates with our modern world and discover the richness of the gospel through the lens of Jewish culture. Let's dig deep, uncover the hidden spices, and experience the beauty of the Scriptures together. Welcome to Gospel Spice!
