Ketamine State Yoga with Henry Kandel

Could doing yoga while on psychedelics improve insight? What about yoga while lucid dreaming? Our guest, Henry Kandel, teaches what he calls “Ketamine-State Yoga” which he says improves healing outcomes, stokes creative flow, and cultivates spiritual experience. While ingesting an unintentionally large amount of ketamine while meditating, our guest discovered the value of doing spiritual practices while using psychedelics, and now he teaches it to others. When it comes to breaking patterns of depression or addiction, Henry says that the key to getting a healing effect is to have a spiritual or mystical experience whether meditating, having a lucid dream, or using psychedelics. He then touches into microdosing and how it can enhance noticing the dream-like nature of things. After the break we take two calls, the first is from Henry’s daughter Alice in Brooklyn who describes starting a lucid dreaming practice at age eight to help her deal with her troubling sleep paralysis. The second caller is Ellen from Soquel who shares some of her experiences of using Tibetan Dream Yoga practices to enhance lucid dreaming. At the end of the show, Henry speculates why mystical experiences are emotionally healing. BIO: Henry Kandel is a science teacher and yogi living in Brooklyn. He has studied diverse forms of yoga for over 30 years including Tibetan Dream and Sleep Yoga from Tenzin Wangyal and Chongtul Rinpoche. He originated Ketamine-State Yoga and has taught it to yogis, therapists, and hundreds of folks online. Find our guest at: HenryKandel.com where you can find out about his psychedelic yoga meetup. Guiding spirits home. Our guest shares some of her experiences of psychopompic dreaming in this mind-blowing replay show. Starting when she was 9 or 10 she would dream of being in a classroom where she learned how to change the dream. Several years later she describes her first experience of helping a dying person happened several years later when she found herself in a dream falling together with a woman who was terrified. She was able to slow their fall by dreaming up first n umbrella then a parachute letting the woman land softly in a place where friends were waiting to greet her. She shares several such stories (including one in which she was awake but meditating) and says that in the liminal space between life and death, our dreaming muscles are essential when the physical world falls away. Jeanne describes some of the work of Allan Kellehear in his book Experiences Near Death: Beyond Medicine and Religion, saying that near death experiences vary across cultures, but the one thing in common is that the dying person is always being helped as they approach that threshold. Rick shares a dream in which one of his beloved dogs is killed, and Max asks whether Jeanne feels prepared when she has these experiences of if she is just winging it. We muse over Tibetan Dream Yoga and the idea that we are more open to these liminal spaces when we are dreaming and marveling over the rich variety of metaphors for dying that people experience, and end by talking about how to enhance emotional connections with those who are dying. Being with the dying challenges us to be more fully ourselves and we can support our loved ones by listening to their experiences of dreams and visions. Jeanne starts out by sharing a dream premonition she had as a child which woke her up to the power of dreams. Jeanne describes how to tell the difference between dreams and hallucinations. We also talk about visitation dreams and grief dreams. All of these kinds of dreams can help the dying person's family as well as the dying person themselves. We touch into topics including Tibetan Dream Yoga, the hard problem of consciousness, awareness-based meditation, reconciliation with our beloved deceased and the soul. We take a last minute call from Amanda who asks about the dreams of people with Alzheimer's. Bio: Jeanne Van Bronkhorst is a non-fiction writer on dreams and end-of-life care.
