As we reflect on thankfulness this week, let us forgo the surface-level gratitude that seems pervasive in our consumer culture. This week, we spend time reflecting on All Saints' Day, a holy day that commemorates all the people of God who have gone before us. Learning how to deeply connect with our children can feel challenging at times. How do we answer their tough questions about life, the world around them, or about God? How can we lead them spiritually as they navigate the ups and downs that life inevitably brings? In today's conversation, Barb speaks with Kayla Craig about her devotional, Every Season Sacred, a resource created to help families grow and connect through all seasons of life. Whether your family is walking through a dark time or it feels as if things are in full bloom, this gentle conversation will encourage you to find sacred in every season. Sometimes, praying feels hard to reach for. Maybe this is where you find yourself today or a feeling you often have. Perhaps your silence contains your prayers, or all you can manage to utter is a single sentence. We are not immune to the chaos that swirls around us. It's too tempting to want to stick our heads in the sand, to try to ignore the violence and conflict in the world, or to not do or say anything in order to “keep the peace.” Yet keeping the peace is not the same as being peacemakers: pursuing justice, healing, and wholeness. Join us as we come before the Prince of Peace, asking for help in being a peacemaker and raising peacemakers in a warring world. Kayla's newest book, Every Season Sacred, is out now! Throughout scripture, we see that God deeply cares about welcoming the stranger, the refugee, and the foreigner. Yet how do we extend that welcome to the neighbors around us, amidst the busyness of parenting and the weight of distressing headlines? This week's prayer was written by Laura Hornby, a community liaison for We Welcome, a Christian group that provides educational resources, bipartisan action tools, and a supportive community for those seeking to take the next step in their advocacy for immigrants and refugees. Pray with us for a humble, generous, and curious spirit, so that we may choose welcome over self-preservation. As grown-ups, we can often unlearn the curiosity our children naturally have and express. They freely ask questions about anything from the ordinary to the disarmingly complex. Today, we're sharing a prayer about holy curiosity by guest liturgist Kat Armas. Kayla Craig joined us on For Real in our very first season. I loved her then and love her still, so I'm stoked she agreed to talk with me again. Kayla is a writer, a great question generator, a podcaster, a mother, and she writes the words I can't seem to find some days when I'm talking about and with God. I love the way Kayla stubbornly and persistently invites the holy into ordinary moments and how she does that beautifully in her new book, Every Season Sacred, and in this conversation. It's officially autumn. Perhaps you're starting to notice the days getting a bit shorter or a certain crispness in the air coming through. As we witness trees burst into color and shed their leaves, may we join in this letting go and making space for new possibilities. Today I have the absolute joy of sharing with you my conversation with Kayla Craig. Kayla is a modern liturgist as the woman behind Liturgies for Parents online. She is a Mama of 4, a supportive pastor's wife, and just this week she released her second book Every Season Sacred. In our conversation today, you'll get to hear Kayla's heart as she shares about what it looks like to pursue an honest and abundant life full of wonder and work. In all the spaces she occupies, she offers an open invitation to be curious, to express our questions, doubts, or confusion as we walk out our faith journeys, and to see the Lord make Himself known no matter where we are. Her first book To Light Their Way is a book of liturgies for everyday life and real-life parenting feelings, celebrations, issues, and places that are hard to parent through. (It is a personal favorite in my home and in walking life out with my friends and family). Her most recent book Every Season Sacred is an offering to still engage your faith life in your parenting journey and faith conversations with your kids, no matter where they lie. This book isn't a formulaic way to do faith and family. It is what Kayla would call a “hand hold” for wherever you are. It is for you as well as your kiddos. It is practical and applicable, but also invitational and gracious. What you find in these pages is flexible for application while living your actual life and can easily be incorporated in an intentional, but parent life-sized way. There are prayers for all kinds of life experiences, and hold space for each of your unique kids to respond (or not respond) uniquely. The Still Becoming Podcast is back! And I can't imagine a better guest to kick this return and season off with! I am so excited to have author Kayla Craig back on the podcast! You might know Kayla already from her beautiful book To Light Their Way, and as the creator of Liturgies for Parents Instagram account. Kayla has a new book out today: Every Season Sacred. It is SO good. There are so many reasons I love Kayla's work, but here are a few: Kayla meets us in the mess of our real ordinary lives, and shows us the extraordinary and sacred that that meets us there. Kayla is all at once incredibly approachable and practically helpful, while pointing to the beauty, mystery, and undeniable hope God's presence and love provides. She points us to the truth of faith and spirituality right here in our everyday chaos. In a time when it may be hard for many to find voices in the Christian faith they feel they can trust, Kayle for me, and so many others, is an anchoring voice. Kayla reminds us that we are the beloved of God, and describes her hopes for this book as an exhale. And, it truly is. We are invited to be present in this book, and in this conversation with Kayla. Kayla is just wonderful, as a person and author, and I can't wait for you to get to hang out with her in this episode. Kayla Craig is a former journalist who brings deep curiosity and care to her writing. She's the author of Every Season Sacred and To Light Their Way. With a poetic, prophetic voice, she created the popular Liturgies for Parents Instagram account, which Christianity Today named an “essential parenting resource.” She also hosts the Liturgies for Parents podcast. Kayla's nuanced and accessible reflections, essays, and prayers are featured in various books, devotionals, and Bible studies. Kayla lives in a 115-year-old former convent in her Iowa hometown, where she hopes to create spaces of welcome alongside her four children, two dogs, and husband, Jonny. It is always a joy to be joined by one of our Christian Parenting Podcast Network hosts. Each host brings something special to the network and Kayla Craig is no exception! She has a heart for helping families slow down and grow spiritually alongside each other. Kayla is the host of the podcast, Liturgies for Parents and the author of To Light Their Way. Her new book is called Every Season Sacred and it's an invitation for families to slow down, ask questions, and grow closer to Jesus in an intentional way.Today Kayla and I talk about the difference between being a consumer Christian and a Christian who is active in faith and relationship with Jesus, how to care for our own souls so we can live into our values and bring our kids into a faith journey, and how family faith rhythms and liturgies can help us connect with Jesus and each other as a family.I really love the question she challenges us to think about for our own families: what do we want people to see in our family that makes them realize we are different as followers of Jesus?Connect with KaylaInstagram:@kayla_craig@liturgiesforparentsWebsite:https://kaylacraig.com/Podcast:https://kaylacraig.com/podcast/Every Season Sacredhttps://kaylacraig.com/newbook/Our Sponsors:* Check out HelloFresh: https://www.hellofresh.com/Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
In this episode, Kayla Craig talks about what it looks like to parent in the mess. How we are to be rooted and grounded in Jesus through the sacred rhythms of our life and the seasons God has given us. How we can implement breath prayers and the examen, how we can bring community along with us to shepherd our families well. And How we can start to order our families and lives that point to values that are of the Kingdom and the values that God has given us as a family. Join us as we navigate the holy mess of parenting, start to notice the grace all around us, and enter in to the rhythms of life as we walk in step with the Spirit of God. One of the scariest truths about parenting is that so much is out of our control. As the new school year rolls along and our children experience invitations to independence, we're reminded that we can't always be there. In this episode, we're praying to remember God's trustworthiness and love—and how we might empower our children to experience all that God has written for them. Kayla's new book, Every Season Sacred, is an invitation to ask big questions, embrace faithful rhythms, and experience God's mysterious, loving presence together. You don't have to have all the answers—and if we're honest, many answers aren't ours to have. This is the beauty of faith. Parenting can be a pressure cooker, revealing the limits of our humanity like nothing else. This week, we're praying for those of us raising “Spicy Ones,” a term our guest liturgist Mary Van Geffen coined. Mary is a friend and parenting coach who is well-versed in this area, and she sees raising a Spicy One™ as an invitation to grow our love for ourselves and our children. We hope this prayer encourages you to take a deep breath and experience the graciousness and extravagant love of an ever-patient God. You can learn more about Mary's work by checking out her website and giving her a follow on Instagram at @maryvangeffen. When we practice pausing and holding still, do we also practice noticing? How often do we stop and pay attention—taking in the details of a moment, truly seeing the person in front of us, tuning our ears to what's beneath the noise? We invite you to come before the God of presence, praying that we would notice the life going on around us and be a family of noticers. Kayla's new book, Every Season Sacred, is an invitation to ask big questions, embrace faithful rhythms, and experience God's mysterious, loving presence together. There are countless moments we long to hold onto so that we remember them—your child waving bye to you as they step into their first day of school, watching them open presents on Christmas morning, a sweet smile stretching across their face one afternoon. We want to keep these memories close for the warmth, comfort, and joy they give us. This week, join us as we pray that the God of memory would help us remember what matters and to be awake to our lives and the people around us. What if Christian parenting wasn't about ensuring your children are obedient and using their obedience as a measurement of faith? For this week's episode, guest liturgist Meredith Miller shares a prayer with us about helping our children really know God and nurturing who they are. Her upcoming book Woven is for parents who want to pass along a resilient faith based on a genuine love for and trust in God. We hope this prayer speaks to you and reminds you that God sees your family and offers tiny invitations of grace in your ordinary lives. You can pre-order Meredith's book here. What does it mean for our families to love our neighbors? It doesn't need to be grand gestures aimed at solving the world's most complex issues. Loving our neighbors can simply look like showing up in the world—ordering extra pizza to share with others, hosting a game of pickup basketball in your front yard, learning the names of those who live on your street, and so on. This week, join us in asking God for help in how to love our local and global neighbors the way Jesus did. May our families be known for cultivating friendship and peace. What if we reframed the interruptions we as parents experience? This week, we pause to consider how interruptions may be times when God is speaking to us. Perhaps they're actually invitations to pay attention. Join us as we ask the One who is always with us for help noticing the divine in all the parts of our lives, especially in the changed plans and disrupted routines. Work and rest can feel at odds with each other, especially when we consider work through the lens of productivity and rest through the lens of retreat. But what if we took these concepts and instead rooted them in belovedness? This week's prayer comes from Justin McRoberts, a speaker, author, coach, musician, and podcast host. Join us for this special liturgy as we ask the One who calls us beloved to reshape our ideas of work and sabbath rest, letting them be pathways to knowing how deeply we are loved and how we may share perfect love with the world. If you're someone who has endured a big body struggle yourself, and you have a daughter, then you likely find yourself worrying about the ways you can help your daughter avoid avoid experiencing what you have walked through yourself. There's no surefire way to write your daughter's story, so give yourself a little grace as you find your way. Today I'm sharing a prayer from the book To Light Their Way, by Kayal Craig. The prayer is called "A Prayer for a Daughter to Know Her Worth" and I have the corner of this page folded in my copy of the book. Let's traverse this together. Push play and be sure to send this shorty episode to another mama friend who might find it helpful. Kayla Craig has another book releasing soon, called Every Season Sacred: Reflections, Prayers, and Invitations to Nourish Your Soul and Nurture Your Family throughout the Year. Pre-Order your copy now and it'll surprise you by showing up on your doorstep the day the book launches! Come find me on Instagram @JenniferTaylorWagner and @YourGoodBodyPodcast
In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we've invited Korean American author Tasha Jun to lend us her words this week. In this prayer for belonging, we are reminded that we are not outsiders to God, who divinely knit us together. Let us pray to the One who makes visible what is kept invisible that our children would feel seen and that their stories—and ours as parents—would reflect their heritage and the hope and survival of those who came before. You can follow Tasha on Instagram at @TashaJunB and find where to grab a copy of her stunning book Tell Me the Dream Again here. Kayla has a new book coming this September! Every Season Sacred is an invitation to ask big questions, embrace faithful rhythms, and experience God's mysterious, loving presence together. You don't have to have all the answers—and if we're honest, many answers aren't ours to have. This is the beauty of faith. To learn more and preorder your copy, visit kaylacraig.com/newbook. It's so easy to let “doing good” obscure our hearts, especially when it comes to trying to take care of children. While we so want to do what it takes to raise our children well, we also want for it to flow out of a clean heart. Let's pray together, asking God to renew and refresh our hearts and those of our children, so we may enter into rhythms of righteousness and justice, goodness, and peace. May marks another seasonal shift, as school years start to wind down and summer comes into view. Perhaps you're planning graduation parties, making vacation plans, or scheduling carpool for sports games. It certainly can feel like a lot—because it is a lot. Join us for a brief pause to reflect on God's presence through it all and ask for help to be awake to it. Kayla has a new book coming this September! We've got a special guest host for this week's episode: Jonny Craig, husband to Kayla, who was out sick during our time of recording (real life, right?). You're invited to pray with us about self-doubt, which so many parents experience. Let's ask the God of tender compassion for help in being gentle with ourselves and our children. With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, we want to offer a prayer for stewarding and celebrating the goodness of God's creation. Join us as we ask the One who birthed the cosmos to help us connect with creation with the awe and compassion of our children, who delight in every marvelous detail. May this sacred connection spark hope and action to care for the earth that future generations will inherit. Exciting news: Kayla has a new book releasing in September! One of the most profound things we can learn from our children is embracing audacious imagination and unbridled joy. So much of our faith is wrapped up in mystery, free of pat answers and tidy solutions. There is an invitation to step into that mystery, where—somehow—death conquers life and miracles are possible. Pray with us this week that we would live as Easter people, filled with joy and hope and proclaiming good news for all. Exciting news: Kayla has a new book releasing in September! What would it look like for us to invite God into the suffering we're holding? What if we were honest about our pain instead of silver lining it? Before we can fully celebrate Easter Sunday, we must go through Good Friday—which is considered the darkest day of the year for Christians around the world. Join us this week as we ask the Light of the world to help us remember and sit in the tension of the now and not yet. Exciting news: Kayla has a new book releasing in September!
