Guess what! You don't need to find the balance between living a healthy life and having a body-freedom mentality! There's no need to choose between the two because they're not actually at war with one another. In today's episode I'm sharing 5 Ways I Prioritize My Health Through Daily Rhythms and it's going to offer you some clarity about living the healthy life you want without slipping into self-sabotaging diet culture. What's the overarching theme for wellness? Well for me, it's all about helping my body function at it's best so that I can feel my best. Gone are the days of eat less move more and expect miracles to happen. I'd rather understand how the human body functions, and make choices that support that functionality to the very best of my ability. The two main things that undergird my wellness decisions are 1. reducing inflammation and 2. stabilizing blood sugar. These two things are truly foundational for total wellness and honing in on them makes decision making that much easier once you start to understand how to actually do that. 5 Ways I Prioritize Health While there are many ways I prioritize my health every day, I've broken down five main categories that are easy to use as pillar for creating rhythms that support wellness. Inside the episode, I unpack how I situate my wellness focus into movement, hydration, protein, sleep, and heart work. While the how sometimes fluctuates, these five pillars are simple enough to develop rhythms within, which maximizes feeling my absolute best. Wanna do it too? I have a feeling you're going to hear me chatting about these things and want to join in the fun! Great news! Starting May 18th, I'm hosting ten days of nourishing ourselves in spirit, soul, and body! It's just $10 to join, and the payoff will be lifelong. Sign up today so you're ready to go when we begin! Tap HERE to join us! Doors close May 18th! This week we're doing One Mile Of Worship! We end May 5th but if you're catching this episode before then, feel free to join us! The big question of the hour is: Can I want to be healthy and free at the same time? In this episode Jess Connolly unpacks how freedom and health are not at war with one another. They are deeply intermingled with one another. She says, “you cannot have a kingdom minded pursuit of health without freedom, and we cannot have a kingdom-minded pursuit of freedom without caring about our health” and challenges us to live as freely as possible while also focusing on feeling our best. Most of us know what our true motivations and rhythms are. When we bring those into the light and expose them to ourselves (and other trusted individuals), we can begin to notice what things tend to cause us to slip into striving for a perfect body rather than caring for our body in a free way. Once we start to notice the healthier motivations rising up in our lives, we can lean into them and allow them to take root. The bottom line is: “Are you trying to make your body good? Or are you treating your body like it's already good?” Why Does The Enemy Fight Us So Hard When It Comes To Body Image? The enemy fights us in our body image because he knows that if you're preoccupied enough with your body, it'll stop you from all the goodness that the Lord wants for your life. Our body is sacred, so if we're consumed with body shame it will affect everything we do. That's why the enemy fights us so hard. Where Do We Begin To Break Free From Body Shame? Jess challenges us to experience and express grief over the enemy's attack on our bodies. If we're grieved and angry enough, we'll have the energy to fight it off. And that's important! Otherwise we'll succumb to his devices and that will sabotage our lives in multiple ways. Jess helps us to understand what body freedom actually is, what it looks like, and how we ever achieve it. She unpacks how freedom fully unfolds in heaven, but being free in our bodies and actually (genuinely) loving our bodies can happen right now. Radical body acceptance is totally possible right here and right now. Similarly, we may still find ourselves having tough body image days, even though we're living a life of freedom at this point in our journey. We find freedom by getting our minds renewed. Jess recommends having a full, in-depth answer about what God believes and says about your body. Download the Body Freedom Prayer HERE. Then, once we know that, we act free (even if we don't feel free in the moment), and the feeling of freedom will come. Access my free devotional HERE. In this episode, we're joined by Erin Holt, who shares her personal journey to functional wellness and how it led her to become a practitioner in the field. Erin explains the difference between conventional healthcare and functional medicine, and how the latter focuses on finding the root cause of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. Erin gives an example of a tack in the heel, where a conventional approach would be to treat the pain with medication, whereas functional wellness would focus on removing the tack to solve the problem at its source. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the body's interconnected systems and how they work together to promote overall health. To get started with feeling well, Erin suggests focusing on the basics: eating balanced meals with whole foods, regulating blood sugar, incorporating movement, prioritizing sleep, and managing stress levels. She also addresses the question of maintaining a positive body image while working towards wellness, and how it depends on the individual's mindset and motives. Erin provides insights into the various reasons for feeling low energy and suggests that a functional lab panel could be a good starting point to identify potential causes. She highlights the importance of finding the right functional practitioner who aligns with your needs and values and discusses the costs and benefits of investing in functional wellness. Overall, this episode provides a comprehensive overview of functional wellness and how it can benefit individuals looking to optimize their health and wellbeing. Subscribe to my Newsletter. Imposter Syndrome At It's Finest In this episode of Your Good Body Podcast, I'm sharing a personal story about a time when I experienced imposter syndrome. And spoiler alert: It just might have something to do with crying on the bathroom floor over a photo. Yikes. Ok so there's more to the story than that. But I'm pulling back the curtain and letting you see that even the Body Image Champion herself (yours truly) had a massive moment of imposter syndrome that I wish I could forget. Imposter Syndrome Is Actually... Good? The truth is that imposter syndrome can actually be a sign that we're on the right track for doing something that's meaningful and impactful. Something that we're good at! And for me, the very thing that I felt imposter syndrome about was the thing that I was the most impactful at helping others with - body image. Here's the thing. Because I have my own body image struggle from time to time, it makes me really good at what I do. The very thing that has been the biggest thorn in my side, is what causes me to be more relatable and effective in my work of helping others. And by sharing my own struggles (like I'm doing today), I'm better able to connect with those who are going through similar challenges. Bad Body Image Days: What To Do The other thing you'll find in this episode is what to do when bad body image days sneak up on you. Especially because body image is more about what's happening in the mind and heart than the physical body, and I'm offer some guidance on how to navigate those difficult days. Because if you're a human... it's likely going to happen to you one time or another. If you've ever experienced imposter syndrome or struggled with negative body image, this episode is a must-listen. Ever feel lost in big emotions? Not sure how to process them, or completely numb toward them? What's a person to do with their emotions anyway? In this episode we're unpacking all of these questions (and so many more) with author and licensed counselor Aundi Kolber. Her approach to developing a healthy relationship with your body and strength will have you feeling ready to handle your emotions and past trauma with care. Aundi shares about how she overcame an ambivalent relationship to her own strength, and how our experiences are a journey and a story that is imprinted in our body. She explains that situational strength has value and, as we learn to listen to our bodies, our strength becomes rooted in love rather than fear. She discusses how our minds are connected to our bodies, and emotions are primarily sensations in our body. Once we name them and cognitively bring them into our awareness, those emotions become feelings. The goal is then to metabolize our emotions, move them through the body, and avoid them getting stuck or suppressed. Aundi emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and normalizing the significance of trauma rather than putting a tiny bandaid on a cannonball-sized wound. It's mind-blowing. She encourages us to honor the complicatedness of our story and pace ourselves in the healing process, so we don't re-traumatize ourselves. To heal our relationship with our body, we can start with neutrality, bringing in awareness in a non-judgmental posture, and then move towards tenderness and compassion. Aundi discusses how we can leverage goodness and love to support us in our healing and explains the three types of strength - situational, transitional, and integrative - and how we can move through each of them. Finally, Aundi speaks to how we can parent our children well while we're also healing from our own trauma. She encourages us to turn towards pain with compassion and to work on repairing fractures as we notice them, focusing on the tiny moments that matter. Tune in to Your Good Body Podcast to learn more about developing a healthy relationship with your body and tap into the type of strength that will help you navigate through the wide range of experiences that life brings. In this episode, we explore what it means to live out our faith in an embodied way, and how we can find freedom in our physical bodies. Our guest, Alisa Keeton, founder of Revelation Wellness, shares her insights and strategies for cultivating a healthy and positive relationship with our bodies. 11:00 - Jesus lived in a body just like we do. How can we begin to see our faith walk as an embodied experience? Our bodies are a gift from God and an integral part of our spiritual journey. By viewing our faith walk as an embodied experience, we can begin to embrace our bodies and develop a more positive relationship with ourselves. 17:00 - The intersections of being "whole" and "holy" in Spirit, Soul, and Body. Being whole and holy involves nurturing our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. When we prioritize bringing all three aspects of ourselves to the Lord, we can experience greater wholeness and connection with God. 21:00 - God has hardwired you physically for a goodness that matches what you feel in your soul as goodness. Our physical bodies are not separate from our spiritual selves. In fact, God has designed us to experience goodness and wholeness in both our physical and spiritual selves. 28:00 - What can we do to shake the negative feelings that are manifesting in our emotions and our physical body? Negative thoughts and emotions can impact our physical well-being. To shake these feelings, we can practice self-care, exercise, and meditation on the Word, and intentionally focus on gratitude. 33:00 - What can we do in the tension between what is and what we hope will be? The season where we want to be fully free, but we're not there yet. Finding freedom in our bodies is a journey, and it's okay to be in the tension between where we are now and where we hope to be. By embracing the process and practicing self-compassion, we can move towards greater freedom and wholeness. 39:00 - What does total body freedom actually mean? Alisa paints a picture so we can get a vision for where we're headed. Total body freedom means embracing our bodies as they are, without shame or judgment. It means practicing self-care, self-compassion, and gratitude, and intentionally cultivating a positive relationship with ourselves. 44:00 - What can we do today, from a freedom posture, to steward our body well so we can feel physically well. We can practice small habits and actions every day that prioritize our physical well-being, such as drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and eating nourishing foods. By stewarding our bodies well, we can experience greater physical and emotional health. 48:00 - Embodying your faith walk through Revelation Wellness Videos! Download the free app! Alisa shares how Revelation Wellness offers resources and tools for integrating faith and fitness. The app provides access to a wide range of workouts and meditations that help us connect with our bodies and with God. Today is a great day to learn about your hormones! Today we're joined by our new friend Isabel Garza, who's spilling all the details about periods, hormones, and PCOS! If your head kind of starts spinning when you try to think about hormones, you're in the right place. We're breaking things down into understandable terms so you can use your monthly cycle to give you all kinds of information for what your body is asking of you. We're also unpacking some of the most common (and confusing) aspects of Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome (aka PCOS). Whether you have it, don't, or just aren't sure, this is your first stop in figuring things out. I've had several doctors throw this diagnosis around with me, so I was VERY confused. Do I have it? Do I not? Does it matter? Thankfully I was able to ask Isabel about this, and she explained that there are three big indicators for PCOS. In order to know whether you actually do have PCOS, you need to be exhibiting at least two of the three indicators. And there was another thing I was wondering about. EXERCISE! Why can I sometimes absolutely crush a tough workout but other times that same tough workout crushes ME?! Well, it's actually pretty simple. Our hormones are changing all throughout the month, and if we pay attention to our monthly cycle, we can actually determine the best type of exercise for any every week of our cycle! To make this even more simple, I made a free .pdf with a visual! Download Your Cycle Code and use it as a guide for planning your workouts in a way that feels good to your body. We're baaacckkk! And today's my birthday so I'm FIRED UP and ready to share my latest thoughts on wellness with you! But can I first say... this season of the podcast is going to be incredible. We have the most amazing guests along with solo episodes where I'm answering your biggest questions about body image, intuitive eating, food freedom, wellness, movement, faith, and so much more! Have you ever stopped to think about what our bodies were actually designed for? Because the truth is that they were not designed for vanity. They were not designed to gain applause, or approval, or validation. They were not designed to be a never ending work-in-progress. They were not designed to turn heads. Our bodies were designed for FUNCTIONALITY. They were designed to hold us all toghether and move us through life everyday. And they do a pretty amazing job at it. The complexities of our bodies are mind-blowing and kind of incomprehensible, honestly. But that's what makes them so incredible! But knowing just how hard my body works to keep me alive everyday, I can begin to make decisions that will support my body in all of that hard work. Do I know exactly how to do that? Definitely not. But when I'm focused on helping my body to function well, I can learn new ways of doing that so that I can truly feel my best. Because feeling my best is a high priority in my life right now. And it's amazing because if I hadn't spent the last couple of years getting rid of the rigidity of a dieting mentality and rebuilding trust with my body, then this part of my journey might look very different. All I know is that constantly eating less and moving more and hoping to move the need on the scale down further and further, wasn't doing me any favors in terms of how I was actually feeling every day. And that's not to say that weight loss is wrong or bad. I'm not against weight loss. What I'm against is placing weight loss at the front and center of all of our wellness decisions and allowing it to lead the way in our health journey. When we place weight-loss at the front and center, we limit ourselves from experiencing all the incredible health benefits that come with nourishing our body, soul, and spirit, by learning exactly what our own, specific, individual selves need. When, with some tools and some guidance, we become the expert of our own bodies, and are making decisions out of self-compassion rather than self-loathing, the possibilities are endless. So for me, I want to be in a place where I'm focusing on wellness from a place of functionality. I want to support my body, and work with my body. Not against her. So that's the root of my health decisions as of lately. Please leave a review and subscribe to this podcast! Subscribe to my Newsletter. Order MY BOOK and start making peace with your body. Just a little flip-the-script action happening today! My hubby Phil took over and asked me all the things. He didn't tell me what he'd be asking me, OR what we'd even be talking about, but the conversation just flowed so smoothly and effortlessly. It was especially hilarious to hear him greet me the way I normally greet our guests, and to hear him close out the show. He did great though and I couldn't love this episode more! We talked about inflection points, pivoting and changing your mind in your health journey, and he also asked me if I ever feel like a hipocrite with what I do in the body space. Woah there, Phillip.
