Make sure to check out his original full length biographical episode back on Episode #144. During this conversation we talk about how his world of travel and surf photography was interrupted by Covid and how that encouraged him to shoot commercial projects outside his wheelhouse like Golf. We also talk about trying to keep a beginners state of mind, how running helps us to stay motivated in other struggles in our lives and careers, some of the expectations that social media platforms have introduced into the commercial shot list, the discipline of shooting what's in front of you, and what he's looking forward to shooting as he moves forward with his career. Todd Glaser is a San Diego-born photographer, surfer, and waterman. A SURFER Staff Photographer for over a decade, Glaser is prolific for his young age, earning more than a dozen covers during his tenure at the magazine. Equally talented shooting land, water, and lifestyle photography, his work has also appeared in The New York Times, Outside, Men’s Health, GQ and the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, in Washington DC. When he isn’t globetrotting chasing swells, treading water shooting in the tropics, or capturing images of the first wave ever ridden at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch, Glaser can be found riding waves around his home, riding his bike, and enjoying the company of his wife, Jenna.
Respected surf photographer and commercial shooter Todd Glaser joins the podcast to talk about how he went from growing up in Del Mar as a competitive body boarder and shooting pictures of his friends, to traveling all over the world chasing swell for Surfer Magazine and compiling an archive of some of the best wave riders in the world, including his long standing creative relationship with Kelly Slater. After years of chasing waves as a sponsored body boarder, it felt like a natural transition for Todd as he started holding on to a water housing instead of a body board and learning how to compose beautiful water images of the world he was already very much a part of. After furthering his education of photography at Brooks Institute, he was offered a staff position for Surfer and began what has already been an amazing career of surf photography. During our conversation we talk about how he developed his style of shooting both from the water and the land to capture not only the action of surfing, but the lifestyle as well, what it's like to travel and work with one of the most respected and hardworking surfers of all time, his latest book and film project called "Proximity", how the world of surf photography has changed in the new social media landscape, and the advice he gives to others chasing their own creative goals.
