Everyone knows Bethany Hamilton as the fearless surfer… but her real strength shows up off the waves
The universal human experience of falling off track and the courageous journey of finding our way back comes under McKay's scrutiny this week. Analyzing why we wander from our goals, he provides a practical guide for course correction, whether in our careers, health, or personal lives. Using the inspirational stories of Lindsey Vonn and Bethany Hamilton, McKay shows how our "why" helps us overcome monumental setbacks, and he also draws on the biblical story of Jonah to highlight the importance of acting even when we don't feel like it. Our host then cites such thinkers as Oliver Burkeman and Joseph Campbell in dismantling the myth that we must feel motivated to act, arguing we should instead "follow our blisters, not our bliss" by finding purpose in the work and sacrifice. This episode is a toolkit for anyone who has drifted, offering actionable strategies - like starting small and building rituals - to reclaim their path, emphasizing that progress is about persistence and reminding us that discipline and routine are the true engines of change.Main Themes:Discipline, not motivation, is the engine of progress.Wandering is inevitable; the real work is in choosing to return. To find your way back, first remember your "why."Purpose is found in the effort, not just the enjoyment.Momentum is built one small, consistent step at a time.Character is built in the small choices you make every day.Top 10 Quotes:“Motivation is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.”“Who says you need to wait until you feel like doing something in order to start doing it?”“Progress doesn't mean perfection. It means returning to the path quicker each time you wander.”“Don't give in to the immediate feeling. Give in to your true motive.”“Getting back on track almost always begins by rekindling the reason you cared in the first place.”“We don't have to get swallowed up by life or things if we face the things we don't want to do and do them anyway.”“Wandering just doesn't steal our habits; it steals pieces of who we want to be.”“Small acts of integrity strengthen your integrity muscles.”“Getting on track requires simple clarity.”Show Links:Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen

Edition for February 1, 2025 This week on The Christian Outlook with Scott Furrow:

Today, we discuss what's going on with the anti-Semitic "pro-Palestinian" protests flooding college campuses such as Columbia and New York University. We discuss the motives of the protestors, the difference between anti-Semitism and critique of Israeli policy and why these protests clearly fall into the former category, and the common theme throughout all communist revolutions in history. Plus, some middle school girls in West Virginia recently took a courageous stand against a biological male athlete at their track meet. --- Timecodes: (00:46) Introduction (03:07) Antisemitic chaos on campuses (13:26) Fallout on campuses (30:42) Counter Protests (41:44) Leftist response (46:51) Trump's response (49:51) Middle school girls protest trans sports --- Today's Sponsors: Seven Weeks Coffee — try Seven Weeks Coffee today at SevenWeeksCoffee.com and use the promo code: ALLIE to save 10% off your order. Today we sit down with professional surfer Bethany Hamilton to discuss the protection of women's sports, her surfing career, childbirth and standing up for the pro-life cause. Bethany lost her arm in a shark attack when she was just 13 years old, and overcame not just relearning how to surf with one arm, but how to compete again and win. She explains how her experience being launched into the public eye led her to share her relationship with Jesus. We talk about her decision to speak out against the World Surf League, which recently allowed men to compete in women's competitions, and the fallout of essentially being blacklisted by them. --- Timecodes: (01:30) Surfing & re-learning to surf with one arm (17:14) Becoming well-known (21:25) Meeting her husband (23:00) Surfing while pregnant & motherhood (30:23) Protection of women's sports (50:30) Everylife --- Today's Sponsors: Good Ranchers — If you want to secure your best price on meat until 2026, go to GoodRanchers.com and use code ALLIE for 10% off your subscription, free express shipping and a price-lock guarantee until 2026! Today we're talking about Rip Curl, an Australian brand that specializes in swimwear for surfers, dropping Bethany Hamilton as their brand ambassador and instead hiring a trans-identifying man. Recently Bethany has spoke out against men in women's sports, and many speculate that this contributed to Rip Curl dropping her. We take a look at their new ambassador, "Sasha Lowerson," and explain why it's such a travesty to see once attractive, successful men turn into examples of perversion. Then we're joined again by Allie's dad Ron Simmons for a breakdown of what's going on in the recent border bill and what the landscape for the upcoming election looks like. We cover the many criticisms that Republicans have presented when it comes to this border bill and give our theories on whether it will even push forward. We also discuss the inclusion of funding Ukraine and Israel in this bill, and the avoidance of calling the Mexican cartels terrorist organizations. We ask the ultimate question: Is the border crisis ever actually going to get solved? Confidence Hack #31: Adversity isn't a zip code where you live. It's just an event. What I mean to say is we don't live on Adversity Street. Our whole lives aren't spent only in adversity! What we have gone through is behind us, and what we choose to do with what's ahead of us is in our control. Today, I go over the story of Bethany Hamilton. Bethany was a budding surfing star at just 13 years old. She was the next up and had worldwide success right in front of her. That was until one fateful day, the day a a 14-foot tiger shark latched onto her arm. It threw her around like a rag doll, and all those with her feared for her life... This story so accurately addresses how adversity is not a permanent state of being. We choose how we handle the tough times of our life. As you listen to this story today, gain confidence knowing that you will get through whatever it may be that you are going through. And on that other side, just like Bethany, you'll be stronger and greater for it! Hey! If you love this show, share it with family and friends! It's the best way to help get this info into the hands of people who want to grow and become the most CONFIDENT LEADERS they can be! And please throw us a 5-star review! Bethany Hamilton is DONE with letting fear hold her back. Sadie and Bethany talk about many moments of fear in their lives and how claiming God's promises, replacing mental patterns with Scripture and things that are TRUE is one of the best ways they've found to fight it. Bethany's had to overcome a lot of fear in her life — from a terrifying shark attack that cost her an arm, to choosing to get back in the water, to being catapulted into the spotlight and suddenly becoming a public person where the world could see her life, and even when she first found she was expecting her first child — but she overcame and didn't let the fear win! Bethany encourages us all to find practical ways of being an unstoppable force in our own lives: Find a passion that gets you off social media and gets you pumped for life! Plus, Bethany and Sadie talk about the importance of family and how intentional parenting and loving your family is its own gift and reward and why prioritizing your family is the best way to navigate all the uncertainties, stresses, and unknowns we'll face in our lives. https://www.auraframes.com — Get up to $30 off on Aura's best-selling frames when you use code WHOA at checkout! https://bethanyhamilton.com/adapt — Get Bethany's free video "How to Thrive In Every Season" - Learn more about your ad choices.
