Once again I Dream of Cameras spans the globe, with Jeff in Prague and Gabe in Los Angeles, and not even a nine-hour time difference can slow us down! In fact, one might say we are utterly devoid of camera viscosity, or “camerosity” for short. In this supersized episode…Jeff unknowingly chatted up Danny Clinch about his Leica Q2 at the Trombone Shorty Soho Session, and the acclaimed photographer was faintly dismissivefor the next two months Jeff's in Prague, where the camera shops (FotoŠkoda, Jan Pazdera) are far too alluringhe's been eyeing a lovely Zeiss Tenax II, a flawed Olympus 35SPn, and a beautifully brassed black Canonflex RMbefore departure, Jeff did the unthinkable: snagged a bargain-basement half-frame Alpa 10s on the ‘Bay - it's half a Swiss cookie and the realization of a lifelong dream!talking Leicas with Dave Tada, Gabe realized he needs a 35mm lens for his Leica III - he already has the 50mm Serenar, so any suggestions?Gabe went to the Fujifilm event for their bizarre new half-a-cookie digital - what did he learn about the elusive x100vi?Gabe has gone half-cookie INSANE with his Olympus Pen FT, so now our friend Sissi Lu has enticed him to give the Pentax One Seven one more try - what will he grab next, the chunky plastic Pentax or the mighty meterless Olympus Pen FV?he's got a portrait shoot coming up, and plans to use the Kiev 60, the Leica III and the Mamiya RZ67as for replenishing his collection, he's up to 27 of a planned 30 cameras Jeff was shooting around Prague when Sudden Fujifilm Battery Death struck again! Behold the prodigal sons of Asbury Park, NJ! It's a total joy to welcome red-hot buzz band DOGS IN A PILE to the Upful LIFE. This colorful conversation with all 5 members went down mid-Feb. '25, during Jam Cruise 21. Though DOGS are somewhat of a young band, their meteoric ascent certainly shreds for itself. So I wanted a peek behind the curtain, to see what makes these boys tick, and find out what it's like riding a rocketship into jam-scene success. Wrangling together all the Dogs' cats into one cruise cabin during the biggest rager of the year is no small feat, however these dudes were definitely stoked to connect, and once we got established they really opened up. Dogs In A Pile proved a humble, humorous, hungry pack; after wrapping the insightful chat these Jersey boys definitely felt like my new homies. So much so that I chased the Dogs convo with the return of my oldest/dearest pal Jason Abrams (J.A.), who comes back to the Upful podwaves talkin' summer tours and a whole lot more. 0:00 - ep.088 preview 03:45 - SPONSOR - Down By The River @ Cactus Jack's CO 7/19 06:00 - The Upful Update 11:15 - Introducing: DOGS IN A PILE 17:45 - INTERVIEW / Dogs [44 min] 1:01:30 - Crossover to JASON ABRAMS 1:07:15 - CONVERSATION w/ J.A. Paris Chong and Geoff Whitman discuss his upcoming book project featuring his photography of Pearl Jam, an idea that originated from the band's management. Geoff, a longtime Leica user, mentions his inspirations like Jim Marshall and Danny Clinch, the latter of whom gave him advice to "be artful" while photographing the band. They also touch on Geoff's experience working with Pearl Jam, emphasizing how positive and supportive the band and crew are, contrasting it with stories of difficult personalities in the industry. Geoff reveals he's been to 150 Pearl Jam shows, shot a significant portion of them, and now gets paid to do so, which he still finds surreal.Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Geoff Whitmanhttps://youtu.be/FssHZQ9g-lchttps://www.theparischongshow.com

Today's episode is about "All I Can Say", from 2019, directed by Danny Clinch, Taryn Gould, Colleen Hennessy, and, posthumously, Shannon Hoon. Our guest today is Ryan Bradford. Check out his Substack at https://awkwardsd.substack.com/ as well as our previous episode with Ryan about GWAR. "All I Can Say" is compiled from VHS footage taken by Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon from his early days as an aspiring musician right up until a few hours before his death at 28 from an accidental drug overdose. Shannon compulsively filmed his life during his unlikely rise to fame, from intimate family moments to hanging out with Guns N' Roses. The "found footage" approach takes us into the recording studio, on the road with Blind Melon, and even into the delivery room when Shannon's daughter is being born. The movie is an unexpected and fitting tribute to Shannon's talents as a musician and visual artist. We wrote them in our hotel rooms on our tour bus and in our dressing rooms. From Howard Kaylan's (The Turtles) exuberant plea with the audience each night of the tour giving us inspiration for ‘Ya Gotta Get Up!' to ‘Katrina' (the first-person account of our brother Barry's death during hurricane Katrina in New Orleans) and all the songs in between, we use melody and harmony to bring some love and the hope of peace to the world. Frank Filipetti was our mix engineer and Greg Calbi mastered it (Rock's doing) so these songs have passed through the hands and ears of two of the best. Gail Marowitz and Danny Clinch teamed up for a great cover and packaging and with the Omnivore blessing, Rhythm Of The World is now ready for prime time! We are thrilled to be here to claim our legacy and share our music!!!”

This is our 200th episode! After four years of this podcast journey, we've reached a wonderful milestone that we'd like to celebrate with you all, and we're going to do that by covering the show that (finally) introduced us into the Gigaton era from the Sea.Hear.Now festival shortly after it's one-year anniversary. We'll talk a lot about the podcast milestone and what it means to us and kind of tie a nice bow on it surrounding what happened at this show, which was the first show that we attending representing the pod when fully established. But it's also about everything that led up to that weekend too. The lingering postponements carried over from 2020 left everyone asking a lot of questions - what kind of band would this be? How would the Gigaton songs translate live? What older songs will still be in the mix? The answers we received were a gateway into a new era of Pearl Jam where setlists would be constructed unlike anything we've seen before. We'll have a lot of discussion on the Gigaton songs, which will be tied into some things we've heard on this more recent tour run. But there are many memorable performances from this night including Present Tense, Wishlist with a Waiting On A Friend tag, Red Mosquito featuring Danny Clinch on harmonica, Better Man with a People Have The Power tag and a cover of Springsteen's My City Of Ruins. Host Will Dailey takes you on a musical tour of Asbury Park, New Jersey: the working-class, seaside city Springsteen made famous. But there was an Asbury before Bruce—the Asbury that made Bruce—and its history isn't all sun and sand. It's also a story of racism, injustice, and deadly tides. But also an American story of survival, revival, and redemption. Get a glimpse of what happens backstage, under the boardwalk, and behind the music as Dailey unearths the ghosts of Asbury Park...as well as the people who have brought it rocking and roaring back to life. This week, with the help of Ming Chen from A Shared Universe PodcaStudio, Amy & Joe talk to Tim Donnelly, who together with Danny Clinch, is a founding partner of the wildly successful Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park; which wrapped up its third iteration this past September. We talk to Tim about the festival, and its connection to his history of activism with the Surfrider Foundation and working his way around the county on tour with Lollapalooza.
Danny Clinch is a renowned music photographer whose credits range from Johnny Cash and Tupac to Björk and Bruce Springsteen. He's also a producer of the Sea.Hear.Now Festival, a filmmaker, and he plays harmonica. So for his 8 songs, Danny decided to put the harp in the spotlight — even giving a mini lesson during our conversation — and those songs led to some great stories, including how he introduced Paul McCartney to B.B. King, played with Blind Melon, and captured the iconic cover photo for Johnny Cash's album, "American III: Solitary Man." [Recorded: 6/16/21; More at 8trackpod.com]
A festival show is on the docket as we take a look back at the first night Pearl Jam performed at Austin City Limits in 2014. ACL is always an eclectic festival weekend, but this year had the band headlining alongside Eminem and Outkast, which on paper doesn't seem to be their scene. But the reunited Replacements would go on before them, which would lead to a nice tribute during the Daughter tag. While this is kind of what you'd expect from your average festival sets, there are moments worth going back to in this such as the extended intro version of Love Boat Captain, a touching dedication during the Come Back performance, and we get a Danny Clinch appearance on Red Mosquito. With apologies to all Texans who's state finally has representation on our podcast for the first time in three years, but also, someone might've called them sensitive. Now that you've heard what a special place Newport Folk has become, let's go back in time to learn a bit more about how we got here. Guided by the founder of the Newport Folk Festival, the legendary George Wein, we'll take you to the roots of the festival with one-time Newport board member Judy Collins, and we'll hear from Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe about the role Newport played in developing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which you may have learned about in Season 1. We'll travel from legendary moments from the festival's early history, including Mavis Staples' first opportunity to meet Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, to Newport's return from hiatus in 1985, all the way to Jim James and current Executive Director Jay Sweet first approaching George Wein with a vision for the future of the festival, which simultaneously brought it back to its roots. All of these moments have led to a stronger Newport community than ever, a place where veterans and newcomers alike are constantly working together, influencing each other, and inspiring us all to strive for a spirit of unity and a better world. Editor Dean Gonzalez has worked with some of my favorite bands (Pearl Jam, The Mars Volta, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and other creative artists that I admire (Danny Clinch, Mark Pellington), and has been able to make the journey from commercials to music videos to documentaries to feature films. In episode 19, Dean shares advice on how to become a versatile editor and maneuver a diverse editing career. He also share his experience editing the documentary What Drives Us, directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures), which features some of the biggest artists in music like U2’s The Edge, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, St. Vincent, Flea, Ringo Starr, and many more recalling the early days of their career when they went on the road in a van. These legendary artists did what they needed to do to follow their dreams, so we’ll connect that idea with our own careers as editors.Dean and I talk about this awesome documentary, how editors can have success working on a variety of projects, how to avoid being pigeonholed, why it’s okay to suck to succeed, how to learn to trust ourselves, what you can learn from working on projects you’re not crazy about, Dean’s strategy for cutting music videos and documentaries, how he used DaVinci Resolve to edit What Drives Us, and much more.Lots of cool stories, great career advice, and technical tips in this one!CLICK HERE to join the Hollywood Editing Mentor community!SUBSCRIBE to the Hollywood Editing Mentor podcast and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts!Original Music: "Apollo's Haze" by JesusdapnkFacebook: www.fb.com/jesusdapnkSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/jesusdapnkInstagram: @jesusdapnk
What's a blind melon? Like most weird band names, there seems to be multiple answers. We'll discuss two of them today, along with the rest of the band's legacy, especially Shannon Hoon. He wasn't around for very long, but he did enough living during that period to make up for it. He also documented almost all of it on video, giving us a rare, very detailed look into the life of a musician - and person - in the early 90s.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I love talking to Frank because It the kind of stuff you only hear if you were there .Frank Stefanko is a fine art photographer with connections to New Jersey performers Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen. Stefanko's seminal photographs, taken in the 1960s through the 80s, reveal the emerging careers of the two artists. In Franks own words,Summer of 2012: Danny Clinch and I had a Gallery Show in Stockholm, and Gothenberg, Sweden.*While in Gothenberg, Danny and I were invited to photograph Bruce Springsteen during his performance at Ullevi Stadium. When in Sweden, I hooked up with old friend Willie NIle.Over the last year, I have been asked to contribute my photography to several new books on Bruce ,"Talk About a Dream" by Christopher Phillips and Louis P. Masur ,"Bruce" by Peter Ames Carlin,"Springsteen on Springsteen" by Jeff Burger. Traveled to Kauai, Maine, and Nova Scotia, to do more landscape photographs.I've also started a series called The Swamps of Jersey inspired from "Rosalita" by Bruce Springsteen. There's been said many things are buried and lost in those swamps. The Metropolitan Museum of Art used one of my Patti Smith photographs in their exhibit "Punk: Chaos to Couture" and The Smithsonian is using another Patti Smith photograph in their exhibit catalog at the National Portrait Gallery called "American Cool". John Varvatos is using one of my Patti Smith photographs in his new book "Rock in Fashion.Make sure to tune in!
