Are you cardiovascular training confused? I don't blame you; there is a lot of information out there that can work counterintuitively, especially if you are just starting to incorporate cardiovascular training into your routine. While it is easy to just focus on the numbers, finding the balance between high-intensity and low-intensity is more nuanced than that. Luckily, I have my friend Jamie Scott, an accomplished sports nutritionist and endurance coach, with me today. Key Takeaways If You Want to Incorporate More Low-Intensity Cardio Into Your Life, You Should: Slowly build up your Zone 2 endurance over time Don't get too hung up on the numbers and data Take a holistic approach and find a balance that works for you Finding Balance with Jamie Scott Jamie Scott is a New Zealand Registered Nutritionist. He holds postgraduate qualifications in Nutrition Medicine and Sport and Exercise Medicine, undergraduate degrees in Nutrition Science and Physical Education, and is a Level-1 Mountain Bike Skills coach (PMBIA). Over the past 25 years, Jamie's career has spanned several roles in the health and fitness industry. He is passionate about helping others learn how to fuel their bodies in a way that supports performance and total body health. Give Precedence to the Feeling I'm willing to bet there is a pretty good chance you have heard some rumors about cardiovascular health over 40 and the difference between lower-intensity and higher-intensity cardio. Many people struggle with lower-intensity cardio, or Zone 2 because they feel it is too boring, hard, or lazy. But when you can remain grounded in your ‘why',' you can stay focused on the practical things you can take away. You don't have to feel stressed or anxious about what your fitness technology is telling you. Remember to focus on the feeling an exercise gives you, not just the numbers on the screen. Back to Basics Often, we as a society are in a rush to look for what is new and shiny, so we need to remember the reliable basics. But they are there for a reason! Working both higher- and lower-intensity cardio into your weekly routine benefits your training and your lifestyle.  The practical application of lower-intensity cardio, combined with the higher intensity and strength training you are already doing, is a crucial part of the puzzle regarding your overall health and longevity. Are you ready to implement lower-intensity cardio into your training regime? Let me know your thoughts and experiences in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Breaking down the rumors around high-intensity training for women in peri and post-menopause (7:06) How to change the way you think about Zone 2 if you feel bored with it or are focused on only your heartrate (14:23) Why having a problem with slowing down may be related to your fitness ego (30:35) Tips for improving or getting started on your cardiovascular stamina in the pursuit of life (38:19) Understanding why, although this topic may not be click-bait worthy, it is crucial (53:38) Quotes “Overall, for those who are just after kind of the health and longevity and want to do it in a sustainable way that is not massively hard on the joints or is not a high skill requirement… that low-intensity mix seems to be better for those individuals.” (12:21) “The endorphins, the huffy-puffy-ness, the sweatiness, the burn, all of those things we have been conditioned over years and years and years in the fitness industry as markers of some sort of ‘success.' And we need to unlearn a lot of those things when it comes to doing this low-intensity, high-intensity split.” (31:57) “It's getting people into that mindset of: you don't just go from 0, drop into almost a 50/50 split of low intensity and high intensity, and just slowly kind of stack things up over a long period of time. But you are not doing it in a 7-day cycle where you are just trying to shoe-horn everything in.” (47:21) “There can be different forms of movement that people are involved with, which does add up over time.” (47:00) “It requires people to do a little bit of reflection and thinking about where they are at, what they are doing, and what the context is.” (53:52) Featured on the Show Follow Jamie Scott on Instagram Apply for Strength Nutrition Unlocked Here RPE Chart Full show notes Follow Steph on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest I'd really love it if you would take 1 min and leave us a rating and review on iTunes! Both strength training and cardiovascular fitness play an important role in your health and well-being. However, learning how to integrate both into your weekly training regime can be challenging. That's why I have brought my friend Jamie Scott on the show to give you some practical tips on implementing lower-intensity cardio into your routine. Key Takeaways If You Are Interested in Practical Tips for Zone 2 Training, You Should: Focus on the training-to-train approach, which will allow you to learn about your needs Find a balance between high-intensity and low-intensity training  Take your time and be patient knowing that you are providing your body with what it needs Your Overall Fitness Plan with Jamie Scott Jamie Scott is a New Zealand Registered Nutritionist. Polar Extremes When you think about your training, do you ever think of it in terms of polarization? The truth is it takes many different types and intensities of training to achieve the results you are looking for. While it can be challenging to weave together all the training you should be doing, when you can distribute your training loads between the polar extremes, you can unlock different variations of metabolic reactions and build a more holistic training practice. It's Not One or the Other, It's Both Jamie is a big believer in training within the ‘training to train' category. This means taking the time to learn the art and science of training as it applies to you and only you. Great things take time, and by focusing on learning more about your body and what it needs, you can perfect the overlap between high-intensity and low-intensity. If you want to improve your endurance, strength, and ultimately the totality of your health picture, the key is learning how to balance the low intensity and high intensity. The benefits might surprise you. What are you excited to hear about in Part 2? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why ‘Zone 2' is having a moment in the spotlight despite not being a new topic (12:50) Learn what exactly ‘Zone 2' training is and the alias terms it can also go by (19:57) The importance of going through the training-to-train phase (35:03) Specific and unique benefits of ‘Zone 2' training and why, if you are endurance training, it is a necessary piece of the puzzle (39:47) Breaking down the reasons as to why the overlap between high intensity and low intensity gets lost (45:56) Quotes “There is a real art to it. Hello, and welcome to The Progress Theory, where we discuss scientific principles for optimising human performance. I am Dr. Phil Price, and on today's episode, we are joined by S&C coach and hybrid athlete Jamie Scott. Jamie came to me a few months ago discussing the possibility of him wanting to do a PhD in the area of hybrid training. So I thought, well, this is a perfect opportunity for you to on the show, and we can discuss all of the types of areas that we can look into. So in this episode, we discuss the misconceptions around the interference effect, what kind of factors we need to be really focused on when it comes to hybrid research, and he discusses his own experiences as a hybrid athlete and gives us three tips for our hybrid training. In this episode, we discuss:0.55 - Introduction8:23 - Becoming sub-elite in many sports13:44 - The misinterpretation of the interference effect?27:47 - Where hybrid research needs to go?33:44 - The importance of progressing slowly42:02 - Jamie's Training goals46:31 - What's the hardest hybrid challenge?52:42 - Advice for hybrid trainingKey FindingsSub-Elite Performances and the Management of Time: "When we talk about hybrid approaches and being sub elite, that fascinates me because essentially you have people that are in these kind of mismatched conditions or sub-optimal conditions inherently and they're still performing exceptionally well and being able to kind of spin those plates I think is fascinating. So, yeah, I think that when you have an athlete that is maybe not as appreciated because those performances aren't kind of like world class, you're not going to have someone run like a sub ten second, 100 meters, but let's say someone's able to run like a Sub 11.5 and then it also is able to snatch 130. Then even more divergent than that is be able to run like a Sub free marathon. I think I said it in the post, you probably have one of the very select humans on Earth. And I think that's fascinating to really appreciate that actually from a genetic point of view, but also from the management of time."The Fascinating Question of Human Potential: "I find that very interesting. That's something that we just probably don't know how high that ceiling is."The Impact of Basic Physiological Needs on Performance: "When you look at potentially the reasons for fatigue from a peripheral perspective, from a central perspective, I think even the desire to drink might downregulate your force production, for example, because that's your primary need."The Importance of Physiology in Performance: "And I think Jerome Dempsey spoke about physiological redundancy. So essentially, systems within systems, ultimately, you need to stay alive, and it doesn't really care about your five K time or whatever."Training and Fatigue Management: "And I think that the idea that people in general probably just have to train a bit more, right? We just have to increase, we have to get people out training, have to get people moving. And I think that there's this idea about maybe overdoing it, pushing it or overtraining and managing fatigue."Adaptations and Fatigue Management: "We see that the stronger signal of adaptations get sent, and hence why interval training is so powerful, right? Because by enabling rest, we're enabled to spend more time at high intensity, but the cost of that is more fatigue."The Challenges of Improving Weightlifting and Endurance Sports: "The interesting thing that I probably would say from an anecdotal perspective is that when I have done weightlifting, so I particularly enjoy sort of the snatch stuff, I definitely feel like I have to be very sensible in where I place that session. Because if I have a little bit of fatigue or whatever, I just don't feel like I've got that kind of snap and...

Mountain bike nutrition is a puzzling subject, with so much misleading information out there. In my quest to be ready for the EWS100 in the Tweed Valley in June, I decided to talk to an expert and get my head around the basics of nutrition for both active people, which we all are, and for the race event itself. We cover our appetites and how protein intake is key to that. Jamie provides some guidance on protein and where we can find the information we need to ensure we are getting the right amount. We talk about under eating, which is a common issue for many active people. Look at the differences between male and female requirements, as well as discussing hydration, stimulants and common supplementation, with some really interesting thoughts on creatine. There is heaps of useful information here. This is our guide to mountain bike nutrition. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Jamie Scott. You can find Jamie on Instagram @athletica.nutrition or on his website athleticanutrition.co.nz. You can find the New Zealand food composition data here and MyFitnessPal here. That means you can choose from three different lever shapes, four different rotors and four pad compounds to adjust the brake exactly to your needs and preferences when it comes to ergonomics, stability and power. Fueling Best Practices for Active People w/ Jamie Scott

Fuel Your Strength

Jamie Scott is regularly eating 3000 calories a day and is getting leaner. How is this possible? Find out on Part 2 of this awesome series, where we discuss the best fueling practices for active people, the harmful side effects of fasting, and dive deep into the knowledge you need to know to fuel your body correctly and sufficiently. Key Takeaways If You Want To Start Fueling For Your Activity Level, You Should: Work with a coach to understand the information overload and decipher what is right for your body Figure out the appropriate amount of grams per kilogram that your body needs due to your activity level Notice if you are feeling shitty, give yourself fuel, and see how your body reacts Bring your body back to balance by reintroducing food Understanding the ‘Why' Behind Fueling Jamie Scott is a New Zealand Registered Nutritionist, holding post-graduate qualifications in both Nutrition Medicine and Sport & Exercise Medicine, as well as undergraduate degrees in both Nutrition Science and Physical Education, and a Level-1 Mountain Bike Skills coach (PMBIA). Jamie loves helping people navigate the complexity and confusion surrounding everyday health and performance advice and helps them focus on the essential elements of nutrition to increase their capacity and energy for life. Sorting Through the Information Overload When you improve your energy processes, all of your body's functionings start to improve with it. You can still be in a calorie deficit, but by introducing a bigger energy flux throughout your system, you can do more and get more nutrients out of your day.  By understanding the systems needed and keeping it simple, sequenced, and strategic, you can grasp the role of macronutrients and why it is important on a physiological level. Jamie believes there is a lack of understanding of human biology in our modern world, and it's only by assessing the information that is out there that you can truly comprehend what your body needs. Eat More, Not Less There is a lot of relevant and not-so-relevant information out there. This is why Jamie takes a practical approach in explaining the ‘whys' behind fueling your body more and not less. Your body's need for energy will eventually override your willpower. This is what causes binges and irregular appetites.  We come from a culture where women are told they shouldn't eat very much, and this just isn't true. By fueling your body properly and consistently, you will notice the difference in how you feel and how you perform. While it's not an overnight magic pill, it will have a huge impact on your energy, ability, and overall health. What was your favorite knowledge bomb that Jamie dropped on us today? Share your thoughts about fueling as an active person with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode What to expect if you start to go out of your way to eat more food (1:55) How to let go of your fears around eating more (6:22) The importance of systems when implementing a nutrition plan (22:22) Why fasting could actually be doing your body more harm than good (31:57) Early signs to watch out for that signal you are not fueling your body properly (40:04) Quotes “You can repair muscle and bone tissue; you can keep your ovaries switched on and keep your menstrual cycle running, brain fog disappears, you are more emotionally stable. You get all the benefits out of each reward, and you are pushing more fuel through the system.” (4:02) “Wrapped around all of that is ongoing support and assurance. And that is probably the biggest part of my ongoing coaching role, is just to kind of pat people on the back and let them know that it will be alright, and this is normal, keep going, stick with it and trust the process.” (12:52) “I think sometimes a lot of people who work with a nutritionist or a nutrition coach think that they are just going to get a plan, effectively a schedule of here is the food I want you to eat and here is when I want you to eat it. And sure, that can be part of it, but if you don't have the structures and the environment around you to prep those meals and eat those meals, it doesn't matter what the schedule says.” (22:23) “Anyone who is on social media and sees anyone promoting daytime fasting that starts from the time someone wakes up, that is a red flag for that person straight away.” (35:46) “We can list all of these positives; we can talk about this until we are blue in the face, we can discuss all the historical and sociological sides of it. The problem is we focus on weight. That's what you get drawn back to.” (46:21) Featured on the Show Join the Group Strength Nutrition Program Here ATHLETICA Website Follow Jamie on Instagram Check out the full show notes here! Benefits of Gardening (0:00:00) When it comes to taking care of our bodies, giving ourselves a mental rest can change our entire attitude towards the day. For many of us, scrolling through social media is the default mental break we all turn to. But have you ever thought about gardening instead? Planting tomato seeds, fertilizing our lawns, or trimming rose bushes seems like more exhausting work. But, it might just be the mental health activity you need in your life. Joining us is psychologist Dr. Seth Gillihan, to discuss how gardening benefits our mental health.   Five Two Love (0:14:55) Only 1 in 60 million births are to quintuplets. The number is surprisingly low, even with the development of fertility treatments, such as IVF. So, Skyler and Jamie Scott were definitely not expecting to hear that after years of trying to have another child, they would be having five. The Scotts currently have seven children, five of them being two-year-old quintuplets. They are internet sensations and run a YouTube channel called “Five Two Love” where they vlog about their fun family life and feature their everyday adventures. They join us to talk about their experience raising quintuplets.    Less Meat at Family Meals (0:30:26) There are lots of opinions out there about the best ways to eat healthier. One of those opinions is the idea that you should include less meat on the dinner table. This might seem unreasonable considering the fact that nutritionists say kids need an average of 40 grams of protein a day or 20 chicken nuggets. You could replace the nuggets with ½ a cup of peanut butter... but surely there are other options. So we invited friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes to share her experience with us about eating less meat as a family without sacrificing variety at the dinner table.   Cashless Society (0:50:36) It seems like every day we're moving further away from using cash. Checks, then debit and credit cards and now things like Apple Pay have replaced dollar bills and coins as the most popular form of payment. Cash is becoming the more cumbersome option, but are we really ready to say goodbye to cash entirely? Here to discuss what a cashless society would really look like is Caleb Silver, Editor in Chief of Investopedia.   Smart Glasses (1:05:32) In Ironman, Tony Stark wears a pair of powerful smart glasses that give him infrared vision and the ability to communicate with artificial intelligence to do whatever he wants. While our tech is probably not up to Ironman's speed yet, we are making incredible breakthroughs in technology and smart glasses do exist. We wanted to know more about this advancement in technology. So, we invited CEO Paul Travers and director Matt Margolis of Vuzix, a smart glasses company, to discuss these glasses and what they can do.     Dr. Seuss's Birthday (1:20:03) Host of The Apple Seed Sam Payne joins us to help us celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday!

Brandon Heath has a song called "I'm Not Who I Was" and that song title personifies my friend Jamie Scott. When I met Jamie, I didn't know much about his backstory. I just saw him as this big, teddy bear of a man with a bright smile who was funny, full of life and who had this amazing Godly light about him.So when he started unwrapping his life story for me in the form of his testimony...well, I just couldn't get my brain around it. To say the deck was stacked against Jamie from the start is no joke. Born poor, grew up in a rough neighborhood in a housing project, father in prison. His early life reads like a sad TV crime drama. He got in trouble with the police early and often. Jamie's dad was the bad dude on the block, until he went to prison. So Jamie assumed his father's role. And he was a great leader, in the worst possible way - gang leader, dealing drugs, armed robbery, you name it. Not surprisingly, Jamie landed in jail. More than once. The last time in, he was on trial, facing down two life in prison sentences. But as is often the case, God takes the bad things we've done in our lives and uses them for his glory. While Jamie was in jail, God used a man doing prison ministry to help him realize he was on the road to nowhere without Jesus. God granted Jamie favor and he was found not guilty of his crimes and became a free man. Jamie did, however, leave prison with a conviction. The conviction that comes from giving your life over to Jesus. Fast forward to today, and this once violent criminal is now the executive director of The Sparrow's Nest, a ministry in downtown Athens GA offering a day shelter providing refuge, resources and restoration to those in poverty and experiencing homelessness. Seeing all the lives Jamie touches each day in a positive way at The Sparrow's Nest is just incredible. I watch his calm, compassionate nature and I still can't imagine him as a violent man. Ironically, though, it's his past that makes Jamie uniquely qualified to lead this ministry. He relates to the people he's serving like few people can. When you read the Bible, you learn pretty quickly most of the people God tees up to be leaders don't have what you might call super resumes. Noah, Moses, Jacob, all tremendously flawed. But God used their imperfections to perfectly execute His plan. and I believe He's doing the same thing with my friend, Jamie Scott. Check out my podcast interview with Jamie and hear his full story and learn his perspective on helping those in need in our communities. And watch my short interview with Jamie.

He's a prodigy the world can't stop talking about. 20 year-old DJ and producer Curbi's passion to evolve his own unique sound is stronger than ever, and he continues to prove himself as a leading name in electronic music's next generation. Only a few short years ago, at the tender age of sixteen, Toby (from Halstead, United Kingdom) signed to the world's leading dance music label Spinnin' Records, becoming an instant hit across the globe. His breakthrough followed tremendous support for his debut single ‘Discharge', which gained over 7 million plays and catapulted him into the spotlight. The music never stopped, with Curbi dropping incredible releases one after another. With his solo tracks 'Shinai', '51', ‘Playground', ‘Rude', ‘Polar', ‘Booti', ‘Whip it', and ‘Blow up', Curbi dominated dance floors, and his solo releases garnered over 10 million streams. But Curbi didn't stop there. His collaborations such as ‘Hoohah' with Fox Stevenson (10 million streams), ‘Let's Go' with Lucas & Steve and Mike Williams (20 million streams), and 'Get Down' with Quintino (5 million plays) make up only a small portion of his impressive discography. Continuous chart success and a rapidly growing fanbase resulted in his tour schedule filling up in no time. Making his performance debut at Pacha's world-famous Ibiza spot, the fresh-faced Brit has moved on to electrify crowds at Tomorrowland, RFM Somnii, World Club Dome, Mysteryland, Creamfields and many others, all the while touring across Asia & North America with no signs of slowing down. ------------------ Tracklist: 1. German DJ and producer Cuebrick has been a major player in the electronic dance scene for over 3 years. Gaining international attention after a series of releases and high-profile remixes on labels like Enhanced Recordings, Ultra Music, Mixmash and Armada, it's no surprise that his sound has attracted an ever-growing fanbase.  While delivering high quality content for his fan base, Cuebrick caught the attention of major influencers such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Nicky Romero, W&W, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Steve Aoki, Tritonal, and The Chainsmokers. The increasing popularity of those artists opened the door for Cuebrick to perform at many festivals in Germany and Austria during the summer of 2016. These performances included his main stage performance at Nature One, Mayday, Electric Love, WinterWorld, and Ruhr In Love. In addition to his production and performance schedule, Cuebrick also works as a host on bigFM's “nitroX” show. As a part of the largest radio program for electronic music in Germany, he welcomes in some of the most famous acts in the global EDM scene.  ------------------ Tracklist: 1.
