Many of us grow up wrestling with the feeling that we don't quite fit into our families—but what happens when that feeling is rooted in a hidden truth? Kerry Washington joins us to talk about the deeply personal family secret that inspired her powerful memoir, “Thicker Than Water,” and how she's managed to protect her privacy and set boundaries while writing such a candid story. She reflects on her most iconic roles from “Save the Last Dance” to “Scandal.” Recorded prior to the 2024 US presidential election, she also makes a strong case for why voting matters, and then we test her astrological intuition in a game of “Virgo or Aquarius?”Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Pierce Rob and Chris talk about the return of the OG Bloodline, a new mid-card championship for the women's division, and more wrestling from 2008.
In this episode, I explore the intricate narrative of loyalty and moral conflict in "Thicker Than Water." The story centers on Nick Wedge, a defense attorney navigating the treacherous waters of a murder trial involving his client, Benny Bleeker. From a mugging gone tragically wrong to the intense courtroom battles that ensue, I dissect the dynamics of familial ties and the ethical dilemmas that shape Wedge's journey. As witness testimonies unfold and evidence mounts, Wedge confronts his own beliefs and professional limits, challenging courtroom conventions with innovative forensic approaches. The emotional stakes heighten as the relationships between the characters deepen, revealing the powerful forces of love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of justice. Join me as I reflect on this poignant tale, illustrating the harsh realities of the judicial system and the enduring complexities of human loyalty.

“Becoming other people” for a living, as Kerry Washington likes to describe her craft, turns out to be a revelatory lens on the high drama that is the human condition. As a “learning actor,” a kind of actor/anthropologist, she has brought elegance and moral rigor to all kinds of roles: as the uber-glamorous, tough-as-nails Olivia Pope on Scandal; as the wife of Idi Amin and the wife of Ray Charles; from Little Fires Everywhere to Django Unchained. Just after Scandal ended seven triumphant seasons, she starred on Broadway as Kendra, a jeans-clad mother in a Miami police station waiting to hear what has happened to her beloved son. Krista was in that audience, and saw how Kerry attended not just to her role on stage but to bringing a beautifully racially mixed audience to participating and reflecting together. So this conversation has been a while in coming. It is rich with grace and surprising angles of insight — on the roles we all learn to play in the stories of the lives that we are given, and the evolution that is possible in how we assume those characters and leave them behind and grow them up. This episode of On Being was produced with consideration of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and with external legal guidance. In distributing this episode, we attest to our belief that no statements made involve promotion of struck work in violation of the SAG-AFTRA Strike Order.Kerry Washington is the author of a new memoir, Thicker Than Water, and founder of the production company Simpson Street. Her many credits include the television series Little Fires Everywhere, the Broadway play — and Netflix film — American Son, and the film Django Unchained. She starred as Olivia Pope on seven seasons of the hit TV series Scandal.
