We are officially launching our brand new comprehensive director marathon where each month we will discuss one movie directed by Mike Nichols. As we all know, a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step and the step we take today is a conversation about Nichols's feature debut, the 1967 adaptation of the Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Over the course of our great chat you will hear us talk about how a young and unassuming Nichols became a Broadway sensation even before stepping behind the camera, how his adaptation of Albee's play was an example of his unique ability to find the heart in the material he was working with and how the decision to cast a real high-profile power couple in the lead roles only added extra depth to the story. We also talk about the many ways in which this movie shifted the culture of the late 60s, how Hollywood had no other choice but to evolve after its premiere and how this simple play scratches at a whole host of problems viewers could easily identify as familiar. It's always a treat when your smartest friend can join you for a chat: especially when it's the kind of smartest friend who makes you feel smarter yourself. Yes, award-winning visionary Neil Wechsler is back with us again to read a part of 3.3, roll past the 500 page mark, and to get deep into the weeds on meaning, immersion, expectation, and whether or not it's actually a bad thing to be pretentious. It's likely a good thing that we gave ourselves a pass on pretentiousness, because then we immediately get right into name-checking Socrates, Freud, Borges, Albee, Camus, and Lorde as we consider what it looks like as denizens at ‘the middle' of the Wake. Come listen to our exagmination of the facts “thus being reduced to nothing,” and then, when all is said and done, stop to consider what it all would sound like... underwater. My library finally re-opened post-pandemic and I went in for a celebratory look around. Though it supposedly had been re-modeled, it seemed to look exactly the same. (Except now there seemed to be no way to access the card catalogue? WTF?) I took a look at the theatre section because, you know, Theatre Nerd, and was struck by how much the selection of plays resembled the selection of plays that were in the library when I was growing up. It struck me that the accepted literary canon of theatrical greatness has not really been updated since the 1950s. When I was growing up, the theatre section looked like Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. And today, the theatre section looks like mostly Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. This doesn't mean that theatre folk only read Miller and Williams but I think it does mean that the culture as a whole still only considers Miller and Williams worth keeping in the collection. There may be a scattered addition from a contemporary writer – maybe if it's a library that's really trying to expand, you'll see some August Wilson or Suzan Lori Parks or an Anna Deavere Smith. My library had an Annie Baker, even. But for the most part, in libraries and bookstores across America, the bulk of a theatre section will be Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams – maybe, on occasion, some Mamet, Albee, Simon or Durang – but most shelves will be the Miller and Williams collection. I'm curious about this. To keep reading The Canon Is Stuck visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog.

When Lee Daniels was eight years old, he came across a copy Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf that featured a photograph of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton on its cover. Flipping through the pages, Daniels realized that his purpose in life was to direct characters like those in the Albee's play. After years managing actors, Daniels had his directorial breakout in 2001 with Monster's Ball, for which Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. As a producer, director, and screenwriter, Daniels has since turned out celebrated movies and television shows such as from Precious and Empire, and, most recently, the haunting thriller The Deliverance. On this week's episode of Table for Two, Daniels joins host Bruce Bozzi to discuss how his experience as a gay man influences his work, how his adopted children saved his life, and the motivation behind a new cop procedural he's currently writing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Apostle Paul famously served as a tentmaker to support himself during his ministry in the First Century. What does it look like for Christians today to follow in his entrepreneurial footsteps? How can tentmaking serve Kingdom priorities in the rainy days ahead? On this episode of the Christian Emergency Podcast, Troy Albee – pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church on the South Shore of Boston – provides helpful insights from his own experience as an entrepreneur. Like Paul, Troy helped support himself while in ministry by identifying a need and developing the skills to meet it. In Trent's case, he launched a successful lock and key business – South Shore Lock and Key. Side hustles provide Christians additional income, flexibility and opportunities. Small business ventures also offer unexpected insights into spiritual principles. You may be stretched and face rejection. But you will also discover new strengths, while finding opportunities to mentor the younger believers around you and engage the lost in your midst. Christians should not take all of this for granted. The cultural landscape is increasingly hostile. The workplace is too often a place where Christians are targeted and pressured to compromise. That is why Christian enterprise will play a critical role in the coming days. First broadcast on December 31, 1967. Every play is political and art isn't easy, according to Edward Albee. People need to realize that going to the theatre is an arena of engagement rather than one of escapism, says Albee. Due to people's lack of knowledge and self-awareness, we in society, we deserve everything bad that we get, are also part of Albee's views.
In this interview, Reverend Kathy Albee, the CEO and founder of 'Released to Reign', expounds on the relevance of the Bible in today's world and the essence of Christianity. Reverend Kathy strongly emphasizes that the Bible is not merely a guide for a good life, but is for the children of God seeking to understand His plan and purpose for their lives. The interview also probes into issues such as the Prosperity Gospel or 'fire insurance' mindset and urges Christians to base their faith and identity in God's love rather than their works. Kathy also elucidates her organization's mission to help Christians grasp their inherited rights as children of God and free themselves from negative mentalities. Moreover, she points out the importance of humility, love, acceptance, security, and significance which manifest through faith.Contact Kathy:Phone: 989-415-9329Email: albee.kathleen@yahoo.comShow Notes00:00 Introduction: The Relevance of the Bible00:21 Meet the Guest: Reverend Kathy Albee01:28 Understanding 'Released to Reign'03:23 The Journey to Spiritual Transformation05:06 Religion vs Relationship: A Deeper Insight08:13 The Power of Love and Humility in Christianity14:45 The Bible's Relevance in the Modern World17:28 The Journey of Jews in Egypt17:28 The Significance of Ten Commandments17:42 The Modern Relevance of the Bible18:31 The Pitfalls of the Prosperity Gospel19:55 Personal Experiences and the Power of Faith21:27 The True Gospel and Overcoming the World22:32 Finding a Good Church and Understanding Doctrine25:34 The Five Major Needs of Every Human Being29:03 Reaching Out and Making a Difference
Renowned playwright Edward Albee talks about life, sex and the theater (interviewed in 2009 by Dixie Treichel and John Townsend of KFAI-Minneapolis/St. Paul's Fresh Fruit). Small business ventures also offer unexpected spiritual insights. Self-care has become an increasingly popular topic! One of my free ebooks is all about ten self-care strategies to help reduce stress and it just so happens to be the most downloaded. While most of us can agree that we need to take better care of our mental and physical health, too often we overlook the care of our souls. Amber is a wife, mother, speaker, and author of seven books including Soul Care: Nurturing Your Spiritual Wellness. In this conversation, you'll hear:Why soul care makes a difference in our daily livesPractical ways we can care for our soulsHelpful tips to receive nourishment from GodAnd so much more!Thank you for joining in as we discuss how you can better care for your soul!Show Notes: https://jillsavage.org/amber-swenson-175
Set earlier in Power Rangers TAD Season 3 when Zedd and Rita were still presumed dead. We're back! And so is Shane's Rider in this all new episode! Chad bonds with Albee as Dex helps a small city on Edoni.
In this episode my guest, Amber Albee Swenson, shares practical tips that are really simple to incorporate into your relationship with your spouse, as well as warning signs that show you might be in dangerous territory with someone outside of your marriage. Amber has lots of great wisdom including this: "There's a woman out there who would be thrilled with your husband. So, stop being critical [of him]. Being critical is not a spiritual gift." That's a good word we need to frequently be reminded of.

Register for the conference: https://trinityreformedkirk.com/tentmaking/ The Apostle Paul was not only the best-educated apostle, and one of the most influential intellectuals in the history of the world, he was a tradesman. He made tents for a living. It was the perfect trade for a man on the road. In 1 Corinthians 9 he made the case for making a living from the gospel, yet he didn’t take advantage of his right to do so. He even said, “But I have made no use of (my) rights, nor am I writing these things to you to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting.” (1 Cor. 9:15) Could you say that? Would you like to be able to? Because Paul was able to support himself financially he enjoyed the sort of freedom that many pastors today can only dream of. But not all pastors. There are a few who even today enjoy the sort of freedom Paul boasted of. And they’ve done it while seeing their ministries actually prosper because of it. Would you like to learn how? Was it suicide or was it murder? Craig Albee sits down with David Oscar Markus to discuss whether Mark Jensen murdered his wife with antifreeze or whether she committed suicide.Craig Albee is the federal defender in Wisconsin. And he's tried lots of cases. But nothing like this one, which has led to books, movies, and of course, podcasts. Known as the "letter from the grave" case, Julie Jensen wrote a letter shortly before her death saying that if she turned up dead, her husband "would be my first suspect." Albee and the defense said that this was just a set up and that she actually committed suicide. Check out the wild twists and turns of these multiple murder trials as David Oscar Markus explores the strategies with Albee for defending a man accused of murder.
