Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Mark Guiliana, a visionary drummer and solo artist known for his eclectic style that blends jazz, electronic, and experimental music. He's worked with artists like David Bowie, Brad Mehldau, St. Vincent, and has his own projects such as the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet and Beat Music. Mark continuously pushes the boundaries of rhythm and sound, earning him a reputation as a trailblazer in contemporary music. This is a condensed version of my conversation with Mark from early 2021. With his new album, Mark, coming out in July 2024, I wanted to highlight his insights and present an episode that fits better with our current format. Instead of a top 5 list of records, I gave Mark a set of prompts to choose from, and we went from there. There's so much wisdom in this chat, so even if you heard it before, give it another listen. I definitely learned new things the second time around. Concierto de Osain del Monte VIDEO For more information on Big Fat Snare Drum, check out www.bigfatsnaredrum.com and follow us on Instagram.

Welcome back to the Edel Golf Podcast! In today’s episode, I want to talk with you about something that means a lot to me personally. Having been a PGA Professional for nearly 25 years, it’s important for me to recognize the people who have helped me throughout my entire career as a player, teacher, and clubmaker. My hope is that you, as a listener, seek some of these people out and learn from the knowledge they have to share. The first individual is the late Ben Doyle. He was the first authorized instructor of the Golfing Machine. I “first met Ben back in 1989… I was just a young college kid at the time…” Not only did I learn a lot from this wonderful man, but he also opened up a huge network of the world’s best instructors, players, and influencers. Sure, Ben shared a lot of information with me. More than anything, however, ”he taught me how to be a golf professional… how to man your post, how to care about your students.”After working with Ben, I started working with Henry Griffitts where I met Randy Henry. In my opinion, “he is the father of modern-day fitting.” His company invented things like the lie board and removable shaft system that we still use today. The time I spent with both Ben Doyle and Randy Henry tremendously shaped what Edel Golf has become today.Mike Adams is another individual who made a huge impact on me and my career. Not to be confused with Adams Golf, Mike is an extraordinary teacher who’s written north of 20 books, taught four presidents, the list goes on. Suffice it to say, “the guy’s influenced more teachers than anybody in the business.” He “gives and gives and gives, and he never takes.” One of the smartest guys I’ve ever been around is Mark Sweeney, the creator of Aim Point. His hard work and research have revolutionized the green reading process and I’m proud to call him my friend. Through Mike, I met Terry Rowles. He works alongside Mike to create processes to “demystify the golf swing… make it more about how you can play your best golf… how you can understand your own body type…” A large part of their work is helping other instructors understand these complex systems so that they can better serve their students. Jim Fannin is a world leader when it comes to sports psychology. Reading his work has played a huge role in helping me stay in the zone both on and off the golf course. Last but not least, is one of my best friends, Mike Schy. Mike thinks outside the box and was instrumental in helping Bryson DeChambeau learn to play with single-length clubs. This list is far from complete as far as people that have played a critical role in shaping who I am as a PGA Professional and a person. However, these folks are free thinkers and it’s my whole-hearted belief that the knowledge and information they bring to the table is worth sharing with everybody. If you’re curious to learn a little more about what each of these people are about, I highly encourage you to seek them out. Thanks for tuning in and I’ll see you next time on the Edel Golf Podcast!

Today's episode is one of my favorite conversations I've had for the podcast. Legendary drummer/producer/songwriter Steve Jordan surveys his incredible career, from the albums that first inspired him to pick up drumsticks as a child to the songwriting lessons he was taught by Keith Richards, being put through his paces by James Brown on the Letterman show, why he became a producer, his band The Verbs, his love of punk rock, why he loves playing with Neil Young and much more. It's a wide-ranging chat filled with great anecdotes and insight from one of my all-time favorite musicians, and I could've talked to Steve for ten times as long easily. My Favorite Album is a podcast on the impact great music has on our lives. Each episode features a guest on their favorite album of all time - why they love it, their history with the album and how it's influenced them. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist, concert promoter and photographer. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins. These performances of Charlie Christian are found on Vinyl LP Record compilations of his recordings between 1939 and 1941. Often you will hear remarks from today's jazz, pop, blues, even rock guitarists ….like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton ….that their BIGGEST INFLUENCES came from two or three early guitarists --- DJANGO REINHARDT, LONNIE JOHNSON and CHARLIE CHRISTIAN. You will hear this many times. The former, DJANGO REINHARDT, the BELGIAN jazz guitarist, is well known for his EUROPEAN style of jazz, the so-called "HOT JAZZ" or "GYPSY JAZZ" or "ROMANI" style of music, that has become a living musical tradition within FRENCH GYPSY CULTURE. DJANGO's "GYPSY JAZZ" style is widely emulated by today's jazz guitarists. DJANGO lived 43 years, between 1910 and 1953, and some of his most popular ORIGINAL compositions, such as MINOR SWING, DAPHNE, BELLEVILLE, DJANGOLOGY, SWING 42 and NUAGES…are jazz standards today. DJANGO REINHARDT is widely recorded, with SIX recordings during his lifetime, and a total of 23 recordings all together, many of which are compilations of his works. So DJANGO as a cultural influence, is a fascinating subject in and of itself, and will be the subject of an upcoming VINYL VIBRATIONS podcast! LONNIE JOHNSON, ANOTHER Jazz and blues guitarist, is credited with PIONEERING the ROLE of jazz guitar …..and for being perhaps the FIRST recorded case of playing single-note guitar solos. He had an extensive discography and lived to be 71, so Lonnie Johnson is well recognized, having being extensively recorded AND after having a long-standing career, performing as late as 1966, or at age 67 years. But WHAT ABOUT THIS THIRD INFLUENTIAL GUITARIST …the AMERICAN guitarist CHARLIE CHRISTIAN…NAMED SO OFTEN…..OF WHOM WE KNOW SO LITTLE ??? CHARLIE CHRISTIAN. Who is that??? What are his songs? What was his guitar style? How can CHRISTIAN be cited so often as a strong influence, when there are relatively few recordings to play? IS CHARLIE CHRISTIAN LOST IN JAZZ MUSIC HISTORY? I am going to bring to light some of this lesser known work of Charlie Christian, and feature some of the first recorded examples of his jazz guitar. More importantly, jazz guitar where the instrument is amplified and the guitarist is playing a lead role. This is truly unusual, in retrospective. Today,
