In this BONUS episode, we delve into the merging of Scrum and Kanban with Todd Little, Chairman at Kanban University, and Joey Spooner, Vice President of Product Management at Kanban University. Join us as we uncover the journey and strategies behind integrating Scrum and Kanban to replace project management and enhance team productivity. The Genesis of Agile and Kanban Integration "Finding the right balance between Scrum and Kanban came from a need to handle uncertainty in tech projects better," explains Todd. Both leaders discuss their initial encounters with agile methodologies and how challenges in their projects led them to innovate and blend Scrum with Kanban to improve flexibility and responsiveness. Understanding Scrum and Kanban "There's a historical divide between the Scrum and Kanban communities, but bridging them can significantly enhance how teams operate." Notes Joey. They break down the fundamental aspects of Scrum and Kanban, explaining how each contributes uniquely to managing projects and how combining them can mitigate the limitations of using one over the other. Real-World Benefits of a Hybrid Approach Todd shares a case study from Vanguard, highlighting their "Scrum stall" and how integrating Kanban principles like mapping work flows and setting WIP limits dramatically improved cycle times and overall efficiency. Joey adds, "Visualizing work and adjusting processes to reduce bottlenecks, especially in QA, transformed our team dynamics and output." Challenges and Insights in Combining Methodologies "Start where you are, and evolve incrementally," advises Todd Todd and Joey emphasize the importance of recognizing current practices and gradually introducing Kanban elements to enhance Scrum frameworks. Joey reflects on early challenges in adoption, suggesting a cautious approach to avoid overwhelming teams and to foster more sustainable improvements. Navigating Change and Resistance The discussion touches on managing resistance to change. Todd and Joey highlight strategies like using historical data for forecasting and focusing on evolutionary change to gain buy-in from stakeholders and team members, ensuring a smoother integration of practices. What Does Agile Look Like, When We Push it to 11? Looking ahead, Todd envisions a focus on refining product discovery processes to make workplaces more dynamic and fulfilling. Both speakers emphasize the importance of continuous improvement and pushing the boundaries of current agile practices to maximize their impact. This week, Dan Neumann and Justin Thatil are joined by two external guests for Kanban University: Joey Spooner, Vice President for Community Development and Product Management, and Todd Little, Chairman of Kanban University. In this episode, experts from Kanban University join the podcast to share their expertise with the audience. Listen to this conversation and learn about the trajectory of Kanban University and its fantastic community. Also, they dive into a profound exploration of what Kanban Methodology really is and how it can improve what you are already doing. Key Takeaways What is Kanban? Kanban University has been educating a vast community on its method since 2013. The Kanban method is often misunderstood. Some significant aspects characterize the Kanban Methodology. It is a way to visualize the workflow, called operational practice. There are also Management Practices, which consist of taking and managing policies effectively in an organization. The practices of collaboration and experimentation are also of crucial importance. Kanban can also be used as a complementary practice to Scrum. A fundamental principle of the Kanban Methodology is to Start with what you do now. If you have started with Scrum, you can improve it with Kanban. Kanban is fundamentally an approach to improving your process framework; it isn't a framework itself. The Kanban Method vs. the Lean Manufacturing: Lean Manufacturing aims to remove uncertainty, which is conceived as a waste. Sometimes, uncertainty does not need to be eliminated; it is inherited, and often, it is this uncertainty that brings value. Kanban tries to understand knowledge work and its behaviors while still representing the workflow. How does Kanban manage the predictability challenge while doing complex work? There are three common challenges while working with complex work: Delay, Dependencies, and Dormancies. Every Team needs to explore possible solutions for these challenges. Check Team reliability. An approach to predictability: Do more and better estimates. Advice for Scrum Practitioners starting to use Kanban: You can use Kaban on top of what you are doing with Scrum for more efficiency. Kanban tools allow Teams to stay focused and deliver consistently. Find first what your struggle is at the moment and see how Kanban can help with it. Learn to manage resistance to change and get accustomed to constant evolutionary change. Learn from the water's capacity for adapting to its environment. Agile needs to adapt to culture as much as a culture needs to adapt to Agility. Take small steps. You have to get your system under control, map it out, and ensure it is not overloaded. If a system is overloaded, it is not predictable. Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? Visit the website and catch up with all the episodes on AgileThought.com! Over 95% of the animals involved in biomedical research are mice. These animals are incredibly important models for human disease because 85% of the genes that drive biological function in people and mice are identical, so genetic contributions to human disease can be strongly inferred by manipulating mouse genes. Large litters and short lifespans (about 2 years) also give us a unique opportunity to study disease and age progression across hundreds of mice in a single study. It's hard to overstate the value of research mice for understanding health and disease in people and other animals, but there are variables lurking within them that can throw study findings into a tailspin if we aren't watching. What are these "reproducibility" snatchers? And how can we manage them to drive the strongest science possible? Todd Little, an expert in mouse models of human disease, will give us the RAW Truth today - on GetReal!

The Florida Panthers are in town tonight as the Flyers look to rebound from Saturday afternoon’s extremely annoying loss, in which the Flyers played a pretty good hockey game but ran into a red-hot Marc-Andre Fleury who stood on his head. The Panthers are also coming off of a loss, dropping a 3-2 contest to Vancouver on Saturday. We were joined by Todd Little of Litter Box Cats to chat about what we should expect from tonight’s game. Topics include:How the Panthers are holding up without their star goalieWhat the addition of Mike Hoffman has meant for the offenseThe Cats’ interesting power play strategyThe ways in which the Flyers and Panthers are more alike than we might think Tonight’s game kicks off at 7PM and will air on NBC Sports Philly locally and on 97.5 The Fanatic if you’re more into an audio experience. Agile leadership consultant Todd Little shares with Agile Amped the challenges he's seen in leadership as well as how to grow Agile across the organization. The major challenge impeding widespread adoption of Agile in an enterprise is the fact that business and IT don't have a shared language to facilitate communication and collaboration. In his experience Todd thinks that business and leadership are interested in the gains of agility but then they inadvertently create structures that run counter to this goal. Todd advocates strongly for moving toward forming partnerships, shared ownership, agreeing on a shared language, and identifying constraints and costs associated with change. This is the Engineering Culture Podcast, from the people behind InfoQ.com and the QCon conferences. In this podcast recorded at the Agile 2016 conference, Shane Hastie, InfoQ Lead Editor for Culture & Methods, talks to five of the leading minds of Agile Management: Steve Denning, Ray Arell, Todd Little, Hendrik Esser and Steve Holyer. They explore the question “Is agile still agile?”, look at the challenges around agile development and product management, and what is needed for large scale agile transformation. Why listen to this podcast: - Agile is a mindset, not a set of processes or practices - The risks and dangers of packaged implementation of “agile” using process checkboxes without understanding why - Agile adoption is hard – simple but not easy - When agile practices are adopted for the wrong reasons it causes stress levels to go up and drives unsustainable behavioursIt’s not “twice the work in half the time”; it should be about twice the value with half the work - The Scrum role of Product Owner is broken - Product management is the hardest part of product development, irrespective of the development approachIn a complex world your only chance for survival is learning Notes and links can be found on InfoQ: http://bit.ly/2g2hWuR 4m:15s - Some teams can benefit from checkbox, packaged implementations of agility as a starting point but they must be able to evolve. 4m:30s - Agility is a journey – you need to be agile in mindset, based around continuous improvement. 4m:40s - The most agile teams are the ones who continually inspect and adapt their practices to work most effectively for their context. 5m:00s - Checkbox teams who follow every one of the practices without knowing why are unable to improve and are not effective. 5m:15s - It’s about understanding and getting to the heart of why – for your process and for your product. 5m:30s - The checkbox process is easy for companies to measure and doing so drives bad behaviour.
