For the 20th anniversary of The Postal Service record, GIVE UP, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Jimmy Tamborello was looking for vocalists to collaborate with for a Dntel album he was working on, he connected with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie. Gibbard agreed to provide vocals for a track that became, “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan.” The two of them worked so well together that they decided to work on more material and form a new project. Tamborello's friend, Tony Kiewel at Sub Pop heard about their collaboration and suggested they would be interested in releasing a full album. Tamborello got to work creating instrumentals at his home in Los Angeles and would mail rough mixes of the tracks on CD-Rs to Gibbard in Seattle. Gibbard would then come up with the melodies and lyrics, recording his vocals and other instruments to send back to Tamborello. Over the course of the year, they would keep collaborating through the mail, enlisting Jenny Lewis and Jen Wood to provide additional vocals. After the ten tracks were nearly complete, they met in Los Angeles to finish mixing the album. GIVE UP was eventually released in 2003. In this episode, Gibbard describes how these Postal Service tracks that Tamborello would send were nice breaks in his writing schedule for Death Cab for Cutie, who were in the middle of writing TRANSATLANTICISM. Because their collaboration started so spontaneously, he describes how this approach opened up his writing and pushed him into new territory. Tamborello describes how he initially conceived of a more experimental project but quickly changed directions as the tracks became more pop oriented and Gibbard's melodies were so infectious. With the limited technology of the early 2000s, he describes how the album was made almost entirely on a Kurzweil K2000 synthesizer and how he would manipulate sounds and sample classical records for added effect. As the concept of remote collaboration has taken off in recent years, GIVE UP remains a fascinating document of its time. From the unlikely marriage of indie rock and electronic music in the early 2000s to the slow process of mixing by mail to the spontaneous idea of asking Jenny Lewis to sing on the album, to the key influences of Bjork, Liz Phair, Conor Oberst and Stephin Merritt to the mysterious effortlessness of the whole project, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
Today I chat with Jimmy Tamborello, the electronica artist otherwise known as DNTEL and along with Ben Gibbard he is the founder of The Postal Service. We chat all things horror as per usual & dip into the phenomenon of Skinamarink. The supernatural arthouse horror movie that divided audiences hard this year.

Tell me, am I right to think that there could be nothing better than listening to some dudes talking about the Postal Service? We hope so, because this week we're breaking down the band's one and only studie: "Give Up", from 2003. In this ep, which was definitely recorded today, March 2, our hosts debate the significance of this seminal record and elder Millennial cultural touchstone. We also toss out some fun musical micro-genres like 8-bit, Glitch, Intelligent Dance Music, Eno-Core and more! Plus, Brandon prepares for his post-apocalyptic career as the Mad Max guitar guy, Matt experiments with alternate pronunciations of Dntel, and Joe tries not to cry. And joining us for all the fun is our friend, former bandmate, and wearer of an ironic, thrift store T-shirt and sherpa-lined jacket - William Noone!Be sure to support the artists by purchasing "Give Up" on iTunes or wherever you get your music.
For this week's Record Club, Ryley and Connor are celebrating (a couple weeks early) the 20 year anniversary of one of the most pivotal intersections of the indie world with mainstream success in the auspicious collaboration between Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello as The Postal Service, GIVE UP. Join them as they break down what makes this album so immediately captivating, what has ensured its continually expansive legacy, and why we consider it a perfect album. Let us know what the record means to you over on YouTube!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hrishikesh Hirway over Zoom video!Acclaimed musician and Song Exploder host/creator Hrishikesh Hirway's first EP under his own name, Rooms I Used to Call My Own, is out now. The album features collaborations with a long list of acclaimed artists, songwriters and producers including Yo-Yo Ma, Jay Som, Baths, Jenny Owen Youngs, Jimmy Tamborello (The Postal Service, Dntel), Jonathan Snipes (Clipping), John Mark Nelson and Grammy-winners John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen) and Kimbra.Rooms I Used to Call My Own marks the first time Hirway has released music under his own name following five critically acclaimed records under the moniker The One AM Radio. A deeply personal work, the EP is informed by Hirway's experiences as a podcast host; eschewing the inward gaze of his previous work as an artist, Rooms I Used to Call My Own instead focuses on collaboration, each song formed out of a conversation of sorts with everyone he's brought into the project with him. Likewise, the subjects of the EP are all other people: the people he loves. The songs are about the deep love and appreciation he holds for his wife, Lindsey, as well as his parents and family.Hirway is also set to continue his Spring tour with Jenny Owen Youngs, performing select dates throughout the west coast in May. They'll be on stage together, doing one combined set of all their songs, performing as a duo. Jenny and Hrishikesh have collaborated as co-writers on several songs and are both storytellers, as hosts of popular, award-winning podcasts: Hrishikesh with Song Exploder, The West Wing Weekly and Home Cooking; and Jenny with Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. These special performances will be a mix of songs and stories from two dear friends; find tickets HERE and see below for a list of dates.Hrishikesh Hirway has been producing music for over two decades; first with his project The One AM Radio, and later with MOORS, a collaboration with Oscar-nominated rapper/actor Lakeith Stanfield. As a composer, his credits include the Netflix original series Everything Sucks!, the theme for ESPN's 30 for 30 podcast and the theme for the Song Exploder series on Netflix. Hirway launched the award-winning podcast Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and tell the stories behind their inspiration and creative process, in 2014. Since then, the podcast has been streamed and downloaded over 65 million times, and has featured guests including Fleetwood Mac, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Solange, U2, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Roots and many more. Stunde 2 offerierte dann u.a. Musik von Chris Liebing, Darkside, Gudrun Gut & Mabe Fratti, Rival Consoles, Tangerine Dream, F.S. Blumm & Nils Frahm, Mano Le Tough & DJ Koze, Dntel, Foam & Sand, The Marble Man und Pole.
Music is Mia Doi Todd's creative canvas as she reaches out to a diverse pool of talent to remix her album “Music Life.” To call the tracks ‘eclectic' would be an understatement when artists like Brazilian producer Kassin or Georgia Anne Muldrow take the reins. Treat yourself to Dntel's organic and spacious remix of “Little Bird.”
This month we're back on the time travel malarkey and we're space oddyseying along to 2001 where we've been laughing at talking Velociraptors in Jurassic Park 3, Installing WIndows XP and wearing massive baggy shorts with wallet chains. We've also been talking about Tracey's over familiarity with Polly Jean Harvey, Unexpected Fall influencers & highly inappropriate reasons for cheering at festivals. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alkaline Trio, Aphex Twin, The Beta Band, Bjork, Camera Obscura, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Converge, Dntel, Mark Eitzel, Explosions In The Sky, The Faint, The Frames, Life Without Buildings, Lift To Experience, Low, Mercury Rev, Ministry, Mogwai, Opeth, Roots Manuva, Shaggy, A Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band, Sparklehorse ft PJ Harvey, Spiritualized, Stars Of The Lid, System Of A Down, Thursday, Tool, Tweaker Ft Craig Wedren & The White Stripes. Ambient Meditations Season 2 - Vol 39 - Dntel For the 39th episode of AM, the legendary Dntel takes the helm with his forward-thinking electronic selections. From his early glitchy ambient bliss to his indie-pop collab with Ben Gibbard as The Postal Service, Jimmy Tamborello has never stopped exploring. His new album The Seas Trees See, coming out on March 26th on Morr Music, is another delightful dose of Dntel's musical whimsy, appreciation of intimate and strange moments, and an overall surreal ambient wonderland. His mix for AM reflects all of his musical sensibilities and delivers a fresh crop of tunes and artists that will be unfamiliar to most. So get ready to take a sip of some dreamy marmalade; this mix would have the Mad Hatter in ecstasy. What to drink, maybe find a very complex Cabernet and burn some incense, because you are going on a trip. The mix is a nice blend of bliss and quirky beats with tracks from the band themselves and some legends like Four Tet and DNTEL. This is the perfect mix to remind you that Spring is around the corner and hopefully, a summer that is less lockdown and more get down, even just a dabble of normalcy, would be good. If you are into Forest Bathing, this also an excellent mix for that kind of thing. So make something sparkly and effervescent to drink, maybe a Champagne Cocktail. Enjoy.
Escuchar audio

Sound designer, Gold Record-selling musician and audio engineer James Bernard is addicted to sound. As a young video game junkie in the 1980ʼs, James was immediately drawn to the quirky blips and bleeps coming from the speakers. After completing a course in audio engineering, James became involved in the early rave scene in New York in the early 1990s. He went on to become both an electronic musician with releases on many well-respected labels in the USA and UK and a sound designer/product specialist for major music instrument manufacturers (Korg, Propellerhead) and is currently part of the team at Spectrasonics. His first release was the ambient album “Atmospherics” on the well respected UK label, Rising High Records in 1994 and is considered by many to be one of the classic ambient albums of itʼs time. James also produced many early trance tunes as “Influx” during the early 90s and later on shifted his sound to more of an Ambient/IDM/Acid vibe. Working with a combination of software, hardware and modular synths, James continues to shape his sound and incorporate all the different elements and styles of electronic music that have influenced him over the last 20 years. James also composes and releases ambient electronic music with his wife Cynthia as Awakened Souls and electronic indie vibes as Syntillas. For this podcast, James wanted to take listeners on a journey through many different peaks and valleys. This musical journey includes many unreleased works, incorporating modular and software compositions, vocal DSP treatments of Cynthiaʼs voice and also a guest appearance from his youngest daughter Mia on one of the vocal treatments. James has recently performed at the LA Modular On The Spot events and at many different electronic music events around the world, sharing the stage with artists such as Juan Atkins, DNTEL, Spacetime Continuum (Jonah Sharp) and many more. POWEL on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/powel.music - SoundCloud: @powel HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to POWEL: Q: Let´s talk about your mix. Reading the tracklist offers a long journey yet. So how did these tracks find the way to your heart? A: This mix can obviously only be an overview of the different styles of Electronic Music I liked between, roughly, 1997 and 2007. So between the time Electronic Music first appeared on my radar, until the time I got into producing again. It is probably the weirdest and most eclectic mix I've ever recorded. It represents most of the phases I went through, not chronologically though, that would have made the mixing impossible. It includes my IDM phase represented by “Boards Of Canada”, "Dntel" and “Mouse On Mars”, which hasn't lost any of it's impact on me, even after all those years. I think I've gotten into that, when I discovered “Arte Space Night”, a TV show which was showing random images of space combined with ambient music, a perfect thing to get stoned to. I included also a little bit of Drum'N'Bass, which was actually the music I played during my very first club gig. I think I was about 16 years old at then. There's also some House, including this track “I'm lonely” by “Hollis P. Monroe”, which I only had on a mixtape at the time and never really found out what that track was. Until it popped up somehow a couple of years ago when I was browsing through youtube, and I was like: "Hey that's the track you used to love as a kid." That was quite a moment for me. That track “Resurrection” by “The Amalgamation Of Soundz”, is one of the first records I bought, right after I bought my first decks in 1999, so this will always have special place in my heart, it's a very versatile record, which somehow manages to cover so many different styles within just 4 tracks. I also included some minimal or minimal-ish sounding tracks in the podcast, which was quite revolutionary at the time I discovered this, at least for me. Creating so much with so little, I was really impressed by that. [see full answer on www.facebook.com/howimetthebass due to limited SoundCloud space here] Q: You´re playing your music all over the planet. Do you have a favorite spot and would you prefer playing more local instead of endless travels every weekend? A: For me, one of the most amazing part of traveling as a DJ is to get around, meet new people and developing friendships all over the world. I would say that this is sometimes even better then the actual DJing part. Sure, on the other hand you have to spend a lot of time at airports and they are the combined horror of overcrowded train stations, shopping malls and border crossings, but you get rewarded by playing music you like at some of the most interesting places in the world, so who wouldn't like that. I also like playing at home, but I'm trying to keep it low, just to make it more special for me. Q: There´s a new Powel release out on Do Not Sit On The Furniture Recordings. Which other exciting projects are on the way? A: I just finished my second EP for “All Day I Dream” on which I was working on for quite a while now. I think I’ve been pushing the release date for almost a year and half now, because it never felt a 100% ready to me, but it does now finally. So there's that. I'm also about to finish my first full length album, which I want to release sometime next year. So that's what’s kept and is still keeping me quite busy in the studio.

Our first guest on Song Exploder is Jimmy Tamborello, aka Dntel, aka one half of The Postal Service (the other half being Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie). Jimmy breaks down the song The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, and talks about his instruments, his influences, and accidentally making a loop out of Jenny Lewis's backing vocals.
Dntel remixes Enya. Mali's Rokia Traore brings the beauty and then we pick up a bit with Toronto's Austra. We drop some post-punk/post-rock with Sonic Youth and Pixies then legends Eek-a-Mouse and Lee Perry bring the reggae. Electronic music pioneer Daphne Oram brings her Bird of Parallax, and Santogold drops a nice remix of L.E.S. Artistes. We drop beats towards the finish with the PNW underground hip-hop of Mad Rad, Sapient and Grayskul, finishing up with the indie pop of Sweden's Palpitation. FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP20. Ben Gibbard. 07.20.122With eight albums in the books from his most notable project Death Cab For Cutie, one of the hardest working men in the indie rock scene is trying his luck with flying solo once again. The story for Ben Gibbard starts in Bremerton, WA where he developed an affinity for bands like The Pixies, Daniel Johnston, and Fugazi. His first official band went by the name Penwheel, and only released one six song demo.A year later Ben was creating low-fi sounds of his own under the name All-Time Quarterback and released two EPs one, self-titled and the other titled The Envelope Sessions. That same year Gibbard change the name of his solo project to the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band song titled Death Cab For Cutie. The first album of Death Cab’s was another solo project of Gibbard’s released on a cassette. Ben thought the reception of this collection of songs merited a full band and recruited Chris Walla; who had helped on the original cassette; Nick Harmer, and Nathan Good to round out the four piece. Throughout their career the group has been nominated for 16 various awards but have only walked away with a Woodie and the Larry Award for 2003’s Break Through Artist. Even though the band had been around for almost 6 years at that point. In 2001 Gibbard was introduced to electronic protégé Jimmy Tamborello, known as Dntel (dɪntɛl). The two worked on a couple of track with Ben on the vocals. Dntel was very happy with how they turned out and a few weeks later Gibbard was receiving CD-R’s in the mail with some of Tramborello’s, beats and melodies on them. Gibbard was given liberty to create what he wanted from the tracks and decided that his long-time partner and fellow guitarist Chris Walla would be an asset to whatever this creation happened to be. Every two months or so Ben was receiving packages that he would edit, add then mail back. Ten month of this would manifest into what we now know as The Postal Service: A heavily electronic oriented group dripping with romantic lyrics, and sprinkled with guest vocals from Jen Wood and Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis.Ben’s appreciation for the writing of Jack Kerouac would land him a in a studio with Son Volt’s Jay Farr where they would create a tribute album Kerouac’s famous novel Big Spur, titled One Fast Move or I’m Gone.Currently Death Cab is on tour for their 2012 release Codes and Keys, and once the band is finished with the year-long world-wide tour, Ben and his overactive creativity will be at it again with an album that will be titled Former Lives. The album will feature tracks that have been marinating for the past eight years as Ben has made some major life decisions like ending his marriage, and cutting back his alcohol use.
