Peter Frampton, for goodness sake! Part of our lives at Word In Your Ear since we were teenagers. Played guitar on national telly when he was 14. Joined the Herd at 16 and Humble Pie two years later. Had the biggest-selling album in American history in 1976 and now releasing his first new record in 16 years. From his home in Nashville, he looks back here – with great modesty, humour and affection - at how he adjusted to such mountainous success and to “when it all came crashing down” while throwing in a winning impression of George Harrison. This too … … the Herd pursued by screaming girls across Streatham Ice Rink … when “the Face of 1968” (Frampton) joined “the Face of 1967” (Marriott) … recording with George, Ringo, Billy Preston, Steve Stills and Phil Spector (aged 20) - “where the hell am I and how did I get here?” … “I'd fallen off the radar and Bowie gave me the biggest gift anyone could give me” … the petrifying success of Frampton Comes Alive! - “I felt I'd be like a Rubik's Cube, here today, gone tomorrow” … the Scout Club gig (aged 12) that lit the fuse and playing Ready Steady Go! when he was 14 (same show as the Stones) … when his father met Mick Jagger … making the doomed Sgt Pepper film with the Bee Gees … working with Sheryl Crow who'd had a poster of him when she was 14 … and revisiting his childhood home in Beckenham. In Shaping Sounds, visionary music producer Robert Margouleff shares his stories of pushing the boundaries of musical innovation, art, and technology while helping create some of the most significant and influential music of our time.Beginning on the set of his first film, Ciao! Manhattan, with Andy Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick, Margouleff captures the tragic beauty of New York's East Village and Warhol's Factory as he discovers a powerful new way to score his movie: the Moog synthesizer. This discovery leads him to meet a studio engineer who would become his long-time partner, Malcolm Cecil, with whom he would collaborate to invent the world's largest analog synthesizer, 'TONTO' (The Original New Timbral Orchestra). Together, Margouleff and Cecil used TONTO to help unleash Stevie Wonder's genius on his era-defining classic albums Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness' First Finale. In legendary studios like Electric Lady and the Record Plant, Margouleff became a pioneering producer and engineer for artists like Billy Preston, Jeff Beck, DEVO, The Isley Brothers, and David Sanborn. A true sonic innovator, he was an early adopter of immersive audio and surround, developing new mixing techniques for home theaters that brought some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters to life.Shaping Sounds is so much more than a chronicle of music history. It's a story about creativity, collaboration, and artistic courage. Margouleff interweaves his personal experiences with the teachers, friends, mentors, and influences that shaped him, revealing how empathy and curiosity fueled his life's work. This memoir is a rich and entertaining narrative of a key period in music history that brings readers deep into the world of record and film production and will inspire new generations of music-makers and dreamers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Music from Elder Charles Beck, Voices of Christ, Radio Four, Maceo Woods Singers (pictured), Biblical Gospel Singers, Silver Stars, Robbie Preston Williams and Billy Preston, and others.
In the late 1960s, pioneering electronic musician Robert Margouleff and his musical partner Malcolm Cecil built something unlike anything the world had heard: TONTO — The Original New Timbral Orchestra — a sprawling, one-of-a-kind synthesizer system that would go on to reshape the sound of popular music for decades to come. A Grammy winner for his work on Stevie Wonder's Innervisions, Robert joins us in studio on the What Difference Does It Make Podcast to share the stories behind one of the most creative partnerships in music history. He takes us inside the making of Stevie's most celebrated run of records — Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness' First Finale — and reveals how TONTO's revolutionary sonic palette helped define that era. He also produced Devo's commercial breakthrough Freedom of Choice, one of the defining 80s music albums that helped bring synth-driven pop to the mainstream, and collaborated with Billy Preston and The Isley Brothers, cementing his place as one of the most influential figures behind the boards of his generation. It's all captured in his memoir, Shaping Sounds: Stevie Wonder, Devo, The Synth Revolution And My Life Behind The Music — and today, he's here to bring it to life. Learn more about your ad choices. It's difficult to summarize Robert Margouleff's career in a nutshell. He's a musical innovator thanks to him and his musical partner Malcolm Cecil's invention of a sort of synthesizer they dubbed Tonto's Expanding Headband. Tonto caught the ear of Stevie Wonder, who brought the guy's onboard to engineer/produce him during that peak 70s period (Innervisions, Talking Book, etc). This lead to further jobs with other legends like Devo, Billy Preston and Richie Havens. Music might be most of the story, but not all. He's made movies, sang opera, sailed ships, sang opera, started businesses and tons more. He tells his story well in his newly published memoir, Shaping Sounds. Robert joins us this week to discuss it all. You won't want to miss our chat or the book! www.margouleff.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Caroline Davis! I am smitten with her latest record, “Fallows.” It's her first saxoxphone and electronics album, and it feels like this fully-realized version of her creative practice in this moment. There is so much to hear and feel, it's remarkable. We talked a lot about that, her work with Creatives Against Carceration, and then dug into a load of music from Duke Ellington, Judee Sill, Boyz II Men, Bonnie Raitt, Billy Preston, Tamela Mann, Nick Hakim, Joni, Dylan + plenty more!Listen to all of Caroline's picks HERE“Fallows”Caroline's WebsiteTour DatesCaroline on IGSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. Shockingly, Mick Taylor turned in his resignation to The Rolling Stones in late 1974 after the Tour of the Americas had already been booked. That changed the landscape for the band immediately so they shelved plans to make a new release in 1975 and gave us the compilation Made in the Shade. While they enlisted Ronnie Wood to fill in on the tour, they brought in multiple guitar heroes to take a crack at it. Harvey Mandel (Canned Heat, John Mayall) brought funk (Hot Stuff) , Wayne Perkins added some tough southern riffs (Hand of Fate), Ronnie chipped in some reggae & latin rhythms (Cherry Oh Baby, Ney Negrita) and Jeff Beck even showed up to jam for a couple of hours. The end result didn't fit one cohesive style - it was the Stones looking for inspiration from black cultures all over the world, putting their own spin on things. Keith Richards wasn't always reliable so Mick Jagger carried forward with music he loved from all over. And they brought back some of the usual suspects in Nicky Hopkins and Billy Preston. However, Mick and Keith would cross a line with Billy that ruined their relationship forever (and we'll get into that on the show). Some might see it as a mixed bag, lacking cohesion and suffering from weak lyrics. Some Stones fans see it as an adventurous album with beloved deep tracks. Fool To Cry was an international hit but isn't huge in their repertoire so Black and Blue is often overlooked in their catalog. As it turns 50 we are getting better acquainted with Black & Blue and include a little overview of the 40th anniversary edition (which was released just months from its 50th annivesary). Documentary producer & record collector Jeanne Elfant Festa has made films about The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Pavarotti, Bee Gees and more. Today she discusses her latest movie on Billy Preston — revealing rare archive footage, Olivia Harrison's key role, and Eric Clapton's emotional on-camera tribute and a lot more. Check outtrailer and documentary screenings here Topics Include: Jeanne lost her entire vinyl collection in the Palisades fire. Her family and animals all escaped the fire safely. A custom-built, mathematically designed sound room housed the collection. Rebuilding takes time — the turntable alone hasn't been replaced yet. Music passion began with her Brooklyn-raised parents' rich jazz collection. Her dad snuck into the Apollo Theater via the fire escape. He carried a saxophone, jamming with musicians at the loading dock. The family soundtrack: Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker. Jeanne and her dad bonded over Bruce Springsteen's sax player. Her father did house calls exclusively for one patient — Miles Davis. Storytelling instincts came from parents who loved plays, movies, and performance. Her own record collection ranged from Rage Against the Machine to Supertramp. Vinyl's tactile magic: liner notes, textures, and each album's unique smell. Albums are movies — side one plays straight through, no skipping. Documentary filmmaking is passion-driven, not a path to big money. The Foo Fighters doc came from being in the right place. Business partner Nigel Sinclair's credits include Bob Dylan and George Harrison docs. Billy Preston first entered her life through her parents' living room stereo. Filming subjects who've passed requires diaries, archives, and extraordinary research teams. A granddaughter's undeveloped home movies transformed the Beach Boys documentary entirely. A stranger's undeveloped Beatles footage, found under a childhood bed, changed everything. Olivia Harrison unlocked archive footage and connected the team to Ringo and Clapton. Eric Clapton opened up in a way rarely seen on camera. Documentary ethics: three sources minimum, no gossip, no stunt casting ever. The Billy Preston film explores forgiveness, contradiction, and the full human condition. In this episode of My Music, Graham Coath is joined by Will Preston, who connects from Atlanta, Georgia, for a rich and thoughtful conversation about soul, songwriting, faith, voice, and why music still deserves more than a few seconds of attention. Will reflects on a career that began with his debut release in 2005 and has continued to grow through constant change in the music industry. From the days of Tower Records, cassette tapes, and CD collections to streaming, singles culture, and short attention spans, this is a conversation about what has been gained, what has been lost, and why the full-album experience still matters.Graham and Will talk about how music discovery used to feel in record shops. They discuss why voice and tone matter so much in great music. They explore the influence of church, gospel, and faith on singers and songwriters. They also reflect on the value of staying true to yourself rather than chasing trends. The conversation touches on why independent artists need to understand both the business and the art. It also looks at the changing way audiences consume music and the dream projects still to come, from orchestral collaborations to R&B and country crossovers. There is plenty of warmth and humour too. From talk of Luther Vandross's stage outfits and giant shoulder pads to the confusion caused by a name that keeps bringing up Billy Preston in search results, the episode is full of personality.Above all, this episode is a reminder to slow down and really listen. Will also shares details of his upcoming project Erratic Heartbeats, his new single Don't Like Falling in Love, and picks Never Knew Love as the song for listeners to start with. This is a soulful, honest, and wide-ranging conversation with an artist who believes in craft, patience, passion, and making music that lasts.Listen now, then go beyond the single and take the full journey.

Part 2 is the first part of my interview with Johnny, which covers the same time period as Episode 1, but in more granular detail, and heard directly from the man who lived it: it's Love's early years, as best friends Arthur Lee and Johnny Echols spend copious amounts of time inspiring each other…all of it building toward the moment they record their very first album as Love. Here are just a few of the many things that Johnny discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: What Arthur was like as a kid; His relationship with Billy Preston, and the time they saw The Beatles together; Johnny's holy shit moment of creative epiphany; Whether or not he thinks Hendrix borrowed from his own early showboating style; The realities of Love's compromised touring strategy; And Johnny's ongoing relationship with ex-Love member Bobby Beausoleil. RECORDED SEPTEMEBER 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. A child prodigy, Billy Preston began performing at his local church in Los Angeles, but his talents on the keyboard and singing quickly led him to guest appearances on The Nat King Cole Show, and later touring with Ray Charles. Preston was a popular musician in his own right, known for hits like ‘Will It Go Round in Circles,’ and ‘Nothing From Nothing,’ but he also had a reputation for working behind the scenes with icons like Little Richard and The Beatles. Today on FilmWeek we talk with Paris Barclay, the director behind a new documentary on Billy Preston. Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It is in select theaters.

John Kosh in conversation with David Eastaugh https://koshdesign.com/ Kosh is a Multi-Grammy award winning art director and former creative director for Apple Records. In the mid-sixties, he was designer for The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera House, where he produced a gold foil covered program for the anniversary Royal Gala attended by her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. At the age of 22, Kosh was responsible for designing the innovative entry portal to the “Young & Fantastic” avant garde art and sculpture exhibition on The Mall in London's West End. Following his work for The Opera House, he met John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1968 as they had admired his work as art director of Art & Artists magazine. They invited him to meet them one evening at Hammersmith Hospital, where Yoko was recuperating. Shortly thereafter they offered him a desk at Apple Records at 3 Saville Row. His first project was the “War Is Over (if you want it)” Christmas card, which led to the worldwide WAR IS OVER billboard campaign that continues to this day. He designed The Beatles' Get Back picture book with the Let It Be album package, the Abbey Road album cover, John & Yoko's elaborate Wedding Album box set, and Hey Jude. Kosh was one of the few attendees at the Beatles' farewell rooftop concert. While working for Apple Records, he designed Mary Hopkin's Postcard, Billy Preston's That's The Way God Planned It, George Harrison's Radha Krisna Temple and The Plastic Ono Band's, Life With The Lions, plus singles, “Give Peace a Chance”, “Instant Karma”, “Cold Turkey” and “Power To The People.”

She is perhaps best known as the lead vocalist on the Teddy Bears' single, “To Know Him Is To Love Him,” which was written by her bandmate, the legendary producer Phil Spector. Her best-known contribution as a songwriter is co-writing the song “Gonna Fly Now” for the 1976 movie Rocky, for which she shared an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Also among her songwriting credits is the 1980 Billy Preston & Syreeta duet, “With You I'm Born Again,” which reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. She also wrote and performed songs for several films and has a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast! This week, we celebrate a landmark moment in television history — the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. On October 11, 1975, the show that would redefine live comedy premiered on NBC, hosted by George Carlin with musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian. From that first night, the blend of sketches, music and fearless satire became a cultural phenomenon that shaped American humor for generations. In this episode, we look back at how Lorne Michaels and the original "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" created a format unlike anything else on TV. We revisit the sketches and cast members who became household names, the moments that shocked and delighted audiences, and the musical performances that defined eras. We also explore how SNL has adapted through five decades of political change, pop culture shifts and new generations of comedians, all while keeping its live-wire spirit intact. As NBC marks the occasion with specials, documentaries and fan events, we take our own trip through fifty years of laughter, risk-taking, and cultural commentary. Whether you've watched every episode since the '70s or discovered SNL through YouTube clips, this episode is a celebration of the show's enduring impact — and the magic of hearing those words once again: "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Send us a textIt's a listener pick! On this episode we look at one of the most influential musical groups of the twentieth century - Sly and the Family Stone, and their 1970 LP There's a Riot Going On. By 1970, Sly Stone and his band had already had a huge impact on modern music. It was a mixed-race and mixed-gender band that spoke of love and harmony among all people. Hits like "Everyday People," "Dance to the Music," and "Stand" had gained the band crossover success and spawned numerous copy cats. However, by the time work had begun on There's a Riot Going On, the band was beginning to splinter. Sly was under increasing pressure by militant groups like the Black Panthers to make his music more "black" and he began to find solace in drugs and isolation. Forgoing the usual input from his band, Sly wrote, arranged, and recorded most of There's a Riot Going On himself. He brought in outside musicians, such as Billy Preston and Ike Turner to give the songs added dimension. The resulting LP was the big bang for the fledgling genre of funk and an album that is consistently regarded as one of the best and most influential albums ever made. Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot pick up where they left off, spinning through the Rolling Stones' most underrated gems in this second installment of their Deep Cuts series. From the reflective nostalgia of 100 Years Ago to the raw drive of Silver Train and the haunting beauty of Winter, every track showcases a different facet of rock's most enduring band. The duo dives into stories behind each song, Mick Taylor's lyrical guitar lines, Billy Preston's soulful piano work, and Keith Richards' understated genius, while trading personal anecdotes, musical trivia, and laughs along the way. They even trace the Stones' influence on Guns N' Roses with a killer live version of Salt of the Earth featuring Axl and Izzy. This episode is pure rock 'n' roll love, packed with energy, history, and deep appreciation for the sound that defined generations.
