This week's guest is Arbak Dal––a phenomenal turkish drummer and founder of T Cymbals. He's toured and/or recorded with countless European artists over the years in addition to his own solo projects. He also worked for decades as the everyman at Istanbul Agop Cymbals before taking a crack at doing it all himself with T Cymbals. I met him a few years ago at NAMM and he's just a hoot :) If you're heading to NAMM this weekend in Anaheim, be sure to stop by the T Cymbals booth and say hi to Arbak yourself. I'll also be there on Sunday so shoot me a DM and maybe we can link up. I hope you enjoy this chat about the 5 (actually 6) records that helped shape Arbak Dal into the drummer and cymbalsmith he is today. Cheers! This episode is a deep dive into the nuances of collecting Vintage Paiste Cymbals with Dan Garza, a die hard Paiste enthusiast and the moderator of the Paiste section on Cymbal.Wiki. We cover everything from the different alloys that are used in production, the variations in serial numbers, production techniques, and all the cymbal lines up to the 70's (that will continue on in part 2). Dan also talks a lot about what makes Paiste so special and different from the other major cymbal manufacturers and why some lines have become so extremely valuable over the years. Stay tune for Part 2! Trinity Grace Church Worship Service - April 16, 2023: Rev. Michael Novak
Cymbal stacks seem to be everywhere these days. They make a short, trashy sound that can be used in pretty much all styles of music, and you can buy all sorts of different sizes or make your own. We'll check out some cymbal stacks, and the crew will be challenged to make up the craziest stacks we can using all kinds of weird cymbals and objects!
When you go to a symphony performance, you will often hear the sound of cymbals ringing out at a climax in the music. Or perhaps a loud ringing sound of a gong will be heard. These are the instruments that can be heard over all the others in the orchestra. Imagine if you were standing right next to the percussionist right at that moment; it would be deafening. This is why first Corinthians chapter 13 starts with this analogy. If I could speak all the languages of Earth or the languages of angels, but I didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If we don't demonstrate love in our actions, all anyone can hear is a loud crashing every time we open our mouths. Our actions speak louder than our words. Show gentleness and love in your dealings with others, and they will be much more likely to be able to listen to you and to hear what you say when you talk about your faith and when you talk about Jesus. The Jons are back with the brilliant Jason Mantzoukas, who made the ingenious suggestion that we pick him up for the podcast AFTER DARK! That's right cool cats, this Two Jons takes place during the SEXY NIGHTTIME. LA at night is like jazz. The traffic has it's own rhythm, flowing like a trumpet line against the thrumming bass buzz of humans in clubs and bars, making out, wearing sexy outfits, day trading and farting. Jason and The Jons bebop up to the Sunset Strip, the piano heats up into a blistering solo, many neon signs are visible, cutting lines in Tall Jon's vision as he plays the FARTVAN like a sax, moving in and out of traffic like Coltrane at Newport '67, reinventing sound with his eyes closed, the Jons make a rhythmic left at Doheny and end up highhattin' it to Larchmont of all places. But that's where jazz can take you... All places. This episode is pure night, and you can feel it. Hard and soft like the wind. Like when you pass the La Brea Tar Pits and get a whiff of the tar. Or is it just the asphault the Jons are turning left on, still hot from the day? The podcast isn't over till we turn right. Right Jon? Cymbals crash....
