We start this week's show with the essentials, for beer league hockey. What are your must haves for a game? The Ottawa Senators will not be playing hockey this week, as 10 players are out in COVID protocol. How likely is this to happen again? What long term effects will it have on the NHL season? What could cure what ails Phillip Grubauer and Marc-Andre Fleury? We debut (bring back?) a new segment, looking at the best and worst of the week (The Connors and the Coyotes). With the fallout of the Brad Aldrich abuse scandal that the Chicago Blackhawks covered up and allowed to continue still developing, Gary Bettman held a press conference and promptly stuck his foot in his mouth multiple times. Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke attempt to go through the transcript as it's unfolding and react to the league's callousness. Onto more fun stuff, the hosts rave about the hot starts from superstars like Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin, and lament the awful situation the Blackhawks have put Marc-Andre Fleury in. Welcome back to The Suitcase & The Scribe with Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside! There was plenty to discuss on today's show, with the NHL now in full swing across North America. So much in swing that Canadian and US teams can now actually play against each other. One of the most surprising teams in the NHL is the undefeated Buffalo Sabres, who an ageless Craig Anderson is backstopping. Continuing in the surprise category, Mike and Scott dove into the Detroit Red Wings and how they are getting Tampa Bay vibes from the motor city. Of course, if you're talking about surprises, disappointments come with that too; and the number team on that list right now are the Montreal Canadiens. The Chicago Blackhawks joined the Canadiens on the list, which leads to how long will Marc-Andre Fleury call Chicago home? Finally, Mike let his feelings be known about the Evander Kane situation, and Scott expresses the bravery of the Hayes family to reveal the issues regarding Jimmy's passing. You can hear all of that and more on episode three of The Suitcase & The Scribe.

We get into how bad Wayne Gretzky's hair looked on the pregame show last night. Back into the Pens talk, Rob isn't putting a ton of stick into what Tristan Jarry did in the first game. The Colorado Avalanche set the tone early with three goals in less than 10 minutes, then went on to a 4-2 win in the season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. Jack Johnson (you read that right) got the scoring going to Colorado, who made life difficult for new Blackhawks goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. On the other end, new Avalanche goalie Darcy Keumper is making Avalanche fans have Grubauer amnesia pretty quick. He was great when he needed to be as Chicago was forcing the issue in an attempt to get back in the game. It was all rainbows for the Avalanche. The power play was clearly missing Nathan MacKinnon, and Gabriel Landeskog delivered a dangerous hit late in the game to Kirby Dach that should have him hearing from Dept. of Player Safety. In the end, it's just how the Avs wanted to start the year. With a win. Now they turn their attention to Saturday to face another divisional rival in the St. Louis Blues Subscribe and Enjoy!
