In the past two decades successive scandals have revealed that Britain has some of the worst media institutions in the developed world. The ability of ordinary people to interpret the news, use accurate information to hold politicians to account or to gain a coherent sense of the world has arguably never been weaker. In his new book Breaking: Breaking: How the Media Works, When it Doesn't and Why it Matters, Mic Wright sets out a coherent explanation of this key democratic failing in the UK (as well as analysing aspects of the US media too). Mic took some time to discuss the book and the various crises in the British media ecosystem.*****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/explaininghistory. Mic Wright returns to KATG for the first time since his 2008 Live in London appearance! Jolly pip pip! Keith and Mic discuss American Mother's Day, over-politeness, and Keith nerve-wracklingly hiring movers. The duo isn't afraid to get into the deep topics including 72-year-old Bill Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson's attitude during Bill's interviews and Jordon again losing the Miss Maine beauty contest. Suzanne Somers' husband has an AI robot of his dead wife, Tiger King's Joe Exotic got married again while in prison, and Donald Trump obviously recently watched Clint Eastwood's Escape from Alcatraz. We learn from Mic about England's attitude on the U.S., Russell Brand, the Pope, and America's Second Amendment. Then the two get into Mic's new book Breaking: How the Media Works, When it Doesn't, and Why it Matters.

Social media can feel frustrating, especially when you're putting in the effort but seeing little return. If you've ever wondered why your posts aren't reaching the right people or why the algorithm seems to be working against you, this episode is for you. Many clinicians and health professionals struggle with engagement, but the good news is that it's not about posting more, it's about posting smarter.Episode SummaryThis week, we're breaking down the four Instagram algorithms - feed, explore, reels, and stories - and how each one determines what gets seen. The key to making social media work for your business isn't about beating the algorithm but understanding how it operates and what type of content keeps your audience engaged. We'll also discuss why engagement, watch time, and content structure are critical to growing your presence online. If you've ever felt like social media just isn't working for you, this episode will help you reframe your approach and make small but impactful changes.Key TakeawaysSocial media platforms prioritise engagement and time spent on content, not just frequency of posting. The algorithm isn't working against you—it's simply reacting to what people interact with.Reels and shareable content have the highest potential for reaching new audiences.Building a following takes time, but small strategic changes can lead to big improvements.Instead of chasing numbers, focus on creating content that truly connects with your audience.Resources & Links

The Star Wars universe gets a lot of attention for its lightsabers, space battles, and witty droids. But over the decades, a rich lore has developed around its history and politics. Dr. Chris Kempshall researches and writes at the intersection of real-world history, with a focus on the First World War, and the Star Wars universe. Shortland Street is now apparently in trouble. TVNZ has just confirmed it is reviewing whether it carries on with Shortland Street. It's still a popular show, but unfortunately it's very expensive to make and very expensive for TVNZ to buy. And given TV audiences are down to about a third of what they were about 15, 25 years ago -it won't be bringing in the advertising dollars it used to. It's not always obvious, when you're in the middle of a moment in history, just how important that moment is. Sometimes it only occurs to you afterward, when you look back, just how much changed at that moment. New Zealand is in a moment like that. We are eradicating in the next few weeks some of the biggest TV shows that we make in New Zealand- about New Zealand. Newshub, the AM Show, Ryan Bridge's due-to-be-launched 7 o'clock show, Newshub Nation, Paddy Gower Has Issues, Newshub late, Sunday, Fair Go, the TVNZ midday bulletin, the TVNZ late news and maybe even Shortland Street now- or maybe reducing how much it plays out in a week. And look, that doesn't mean there are no New Zealand-made TV shows left. There's still Seven Sharp, Motorway Patrol, The Casketeers- the list goes on. But the dynamics that are killing those other shows at the moment will, in the end, probably get the rest of them too. And what that means is that we see less and less of ourselves as Kiwis on screen. And that is a loss, because there is consensus that hearing and seeing your culture and your accent and your way of life reflected back to you on screen is affirming. It makes you proud of who you are. So remember this- because this isn't just another day in the media sector. This isn't normal, what's happening right now. In this moment of time, we are losing something we will probably never get back to the same extent, which is hours of Kiwi voices and faces on screen every day. And kids being born right now will probably grow up pretty much exclusively watching international content and hardly any New-Zealand made content. I'm not arguing this should be stopped. Frankly, if we want to keep New Zealand on screens, we need shows that New Zealanders want to watch, and that's clearly not happening. I'm just pointing out this is a big thing - and an unusual thing - that is happening right now. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, we're joined by HotGirlFarmer, as she delivers last week's breaches in your favorite segment, Who's Been Popped. Also, the company Oracle alerts customers that the new Mac OS 14. 4 update will disrupt Java functionality and urges. Customers to postpone this update. Ransomware as a Service groups are upping their recruitment efforts, defying law enforcement disruptions. With cunning resilience. What are ransomware as a service groups and how are they recruiting? Stick around to find out. And the White House is really doubling down on water utilities, urging states and governors to collaborate to help protect this critical infrastructure. And finally, researchers have discovered a new loop denial of service attack that targets [00:01:00] UDP based application level protocols, putting an estimated 300, internet hosts at risk for continuous looping and unneeded stress. How will this affect everyday users? Alrighty, so before we get into the breaches with Hot Girl Farmer, I just wanted to warn macOS users to maybe postpone the most recent update to avoid any system disruptions. There are no current workarounds and Java isn't liking the new update. This isn't like how it used to be in the earlier 2000s where Java ran everything on your computer. It shouldn't affect you unless you're developing in Java. But besides Java issues, Updated users are reporting issues with their printer drivers, lost iCloud files, and connectivity issues with USB hubs and monitors. So let's just hold off on the new macOS 14. 4 upgrade for a few more days. [00:01:53] HGF: [00:02:00] First off, hackers targeted MediaWorks, a company in New Zealand, demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency from victims who just wanted to win a free radio contest. MediaWorks is out here like, sorry, your name, address, and birthday were part of our grand prize giveaway to some hackers. Hopping on a financial rollercoaster, the International Monetary Fund got their emails hacked. And these weren't just any emails, they were the kind that you use fancy words in hoping to sound smart. The IMF is like the person who insists on using a $10 word when a $1 word will do, and now everyone knows they've been using "Synergy" wrong this whole time. [00:02:41] HGF: Meanwhile in France, they've turned data breaches into an art form, with up to 43 million people affected. It's a breach so chic, it's practically wearing a striped shirt and smoking a cigarette. And let's not forget Alabama, where the state government websites faced a denial of service [00:03:00] attack. Alabama's like, Our websites are slower than molasses in January, but don't you worry, your data's as safe as a church potluck. Except in this case, the potluck's been crashed by every hacker in a 10 mile radius. So, what have we learned aside from the fact that the world is a hacker's oyster? Keep your friends close, your passwords closer, and maybe, try not to store your entire life on a device that could be hacked by a 12 year old with a grudge. In the grand scheme of things, we're all just trying to make it through this digital world. [00:03:32] transition: Thanks for watching! [00:03:38] offsetkeyz: We've been hearing a lot coming out of the White House about critical infrastructure, such as power and water. They've been providing a lot of guidance recently and encouraging collaboration to avoid cyber attacks. So what do they know that we don't know? It's starting to get me a little scared. So just two days ago, the Biden Harris administration released some more guidance on how to stay safe, but is [00:04:00] also urgently calling governors and state governments to start collaborating. and really hardening the systems of their critical water infrastructure. When we think about crippling cyber threats, we tend to think about big corporations and ransomware and things like that, but those may be where the money is, but those who are out to get the United States of America, like maybe China and maybe Russia, I'm not sure. We'll be targeting our critical infrastructure first Now, if you are working in it in a critical infrastructure like power or water, our hats are off to you. I know what you're up against and even. The White House knows what you're up against, which is why they're starting to step in. So keep doing the Lord's work out there and try to get it as secure as possible. Because, hey, we all need water to live. And I don't want to be making that Walmart run when my water stops working. That's going to be crazy. So part of the major efforts by the Biden Harris administration includes creating a cybersecurity task force between the EPA and the [00:05:00] NSC, promoting existing resources to protect against cyberattacks on water systems. According to the letter from the White House, there have been an increased amount of attacks on water systems driven by both countries or nation state actors and run of the mill cyber criminals. So I'm glad to see our federal government stepping in and helping where they can. But we might be reaching the point where we need to take our own health and wellbeing into our own hands, stock up on water, buy a nice filter, maybe get a rain bucket for outside. Make sure that you and your family are taken care of in the event that the water does go down. [00:05:40] offsetkeyz: Recently we've been seeing a lot of ransomware as a service groups being shut down by the FBI and other three letter organizations, which is great. But the FBI can only do so much, and what they've been doing is trying to capture individuals who are responsible for running these ransomware as a service groups or developers, [00:06:00] but mostly they're just shutting down dark web websites. with big banners that say claimed by the FBI. So in most instances, the individuals behind these ransomware as a service groups are just moving and creating new ransomware as a service groups, or joining others, strengthening their staffing. But let's back up for a second. What is ransomware as a service? Well, this is the new hot thing in ransomware, where it's essentially Cloud as a service, or something that you would sign up to use not really knowing how to make it yourself, but you want to use the tools to conduct a ransomware. So a good example of something you might use as a service is something like Squarespace, where if you don't know how to do web development, but you want a website, you would then pay for Squarespace's services and they give you some features, right? Depending on how much you're willing to pay. So Squarespace specifically is considered software as a service. Now ransomware as a service does exactly [00:07:00] that. I would like to ransomware somebody. So I go sign up for an account at one of these places. Such as Medusa or Cloak, as referenced in the article by HelpNet Security that's linked in our show notes below. And depending on the amount you want to pay for this service, you can get perks. Thanks. The amounts are surprisingly low between 800 to 1, 000 a year to access this product and they're getting lower. They're being pushed harder onto end users and the perks are getting better too. One of the lowest tiers is once you reach a million dollars in ransom payments, you get access to dumped hashes, you get access to a bunch of tools that make it easier to do the initial compromise. There have also been a string of Exit scams across the dark web, which is essentially when a company like Medusa or any ransomware as a service will Receive the ransom that you [00:08:00] went out and earned and then just close down their site keeping all of the money most ransomware as a services Set up the platform to receive the money And then they pay you about 85 percent of the ransom, as agreed upon before using the service. But now these groups are starting to let you collect the ransom, and then allow you to pay that 15 percent usage fee. helping to encourage people to use their services and not be so afraid of exit scams or other scams on the dark web. But what's so crazy about this is that they're literally just posting ads on the dark web. They're in forums and they are offering these perks and security researchers are able to see them in real time and see who's interacting with them. And the beauty of the dark web is that. If you're doing it correctly, it can be completely anonymous. Now I don't encourage you to get on the dark web to see this type of activity, but it is available to you. And if you'd like more information about the dark web, I released a talk about a week ago, maybe two weeks ago at this point, outlining at a high level how the dark web [00:09:00] works. [00:09:12] offsetkeyz: And finally, researchers have developed or discovered a new denial of service or DOS attack. that relies on UDP based application level protocols. And if you're not familiar, there are two main protocols on the transport layer that you interact with on a daily basis. UDP and TCP. UDP is the faster of the two, and it doesn't require any sort of verification that the data has been received. And this is often used when gaming online with your friends or talking, or even streaming like YouTube videos. Those rely heavily on UDP because you need to get the data as quickly as possible when streaming videos. And it doesn't really matter if every single frame is accounted for, you can occasionally drop frames, which might result in a little skip, but [00:10:00] overall, most of them are going to get through kind of like a shotgun spray. Whereas TCP is more for like text based communications or things where data needs to be verified on both ends, and it's a little slower due to the verification. So, UDP inherently doesn't verify, which is important to understand this type of attack, because this loop denial of service exploits UDP's lack of source IP validation to create endless communication loops between servers, eventually overwhelming them. Additionally, protocols like DNS, NTP, and TFTP are among those vulnerable to these attacks, potentially affecting basic internet functionalities. So this does tie back into the attack on DNS, which is essentially like a lookup of what you're trying to navigate to. So, when you navigate to facebook.com it reaches out to a DNS server and says, Hey, what the heck is facebook. com? And it replies with an address. Without those [00:11:00] DNS servers, we actually can't move about the internet like we do on the day to day. So this attack is easily triggered by a single spoofed message and can stress entire networks with 300, 000 hosts already at risk. There's no evidence of this loop denial of service being used in the wild, but its exploitation is considered trivial, affecting major vendors like Cisco and Microsoft. Now, these are likely a little further down the pipeline than you're familiar with as a regular user or even as a cybersecurity analyst. but you might notice slower internet speeds, stuff like that, if this happens, with the potential for it to completely shut down your internet connection. And on that note, not much is to be done on the user level. Just letting you know what's possible and what the attackers are doing. Hitting you from all kinds of angles. All right, and that is all we've got for you today. A little bit longer of an episode because we missed yesterday due to technical [00:12:00] issues, but we're back and better than ever, and we will talk to you some more tomorrow.
While fully accepting these are difficult days for the media in this country, it is important to put the Newshub news into a little bit of context. You can still be successful in this country, and to take one sad case and lump it in with everybody else is to fail to understand the nuance of the landscape. For a start, this country, as Adrian Orr pointed out yesterday, has massive economic troubles. The media, or the commercial, non-taxpayer funded media are at the sharp end of that, always have been. Also worth remembering, the story is being played out all over the world at the moment, everyone from Time Magazine to Vogue to the LA Times is laying people off, and that's before you get to the Disneys and Paramount and BBCs. The Newshub story of yesterday is, in many respects, the TV3 story of the past several decades. They have never really been loved. Owners have come and gone. Owners have owned them for the wrong reasons. Owners have tried to sell them unsuccessfully. Ask yourself why. The company was split recently after they couldn't sell it as a combined going concern, hence it became Discovery and MediaWorks, the radio arm, went their own way. Discovery has issues or Warner Brothers Discovery has issues for themselves all over the world, see, a tiny player at the bottom of the Earth would not have been high on their old ‘let's bail them out scale.' The politicians weighing in largely had it right, I thought, National said there was basically nothing they could do. Hipkins was also right when he said it's problematic that the linear TV landscape now is solely, or the news division anyway, solely operated by TVNZ. The last thing TVNZ needs, I can tell you, is the laziness that inevitably ensues when you have the place to yourself. Which is why radio remains as robust as it ever has. There's plenty of competition, and competition keeps you sharp. If we're to be a little bit blunt, you might want to look at some of the decisions MediaWorks, TV3, Clear Channel, the equity companies, all the various owners have made over the years. It's been a bumpy old ride, basically for three long decades. TV3 news, in many respects, never really got a hold of the New Zealand psyche, it was never really that successful. TV1 killed and kills them every night by some margin. Yes, they did some innovative things, but at the end of the day, numbers count. Numbers in audience and numbers in revenue. This company, for example, NZME is profitable, I'm told the years got off to a good start. Sky TV is profitable, their results came out last week, they look more than solid. TVNZ is losing money, and if Seymour gets his way, we'll have to pay some sort of dividend to level the field, that's no bad thing. Lord knows what's happening to Stuff and what they're up to, if you've seen their new website, but they're private, so we don't know. Minor players like the Spinoff and Newsroom still seem to keep their head above the water, magazines still seem to be available to read. So, it's not the end of the world, and it's not the end of the media. It's how you do it, that's clearly the difference. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Uncertainty over the future for hundreds of Newshub workers, following the shock announcement its newsroom will close. Warner Brothers Discovery executives told staff today they're shutting the newsroom and website, from the end of June. The former-Mediaworks news company says it's battled financial headwinds and plans to focus on streaming service, ThreeNow, not news. Media commentator Bill Ralston is predicting he expects more media failures over the next six months. "Once you start chewing into losses of $100 million, and then more, and then more on top of it- it becomes unstoppable." Ralston expects some who've lost jobs will head overseas. New Zealand's political arena is more like a gladiator pit than a parliament, and we've got front-row seats to the latest skirmishes. My guests, Q+As Jack Tame, the ever-incisive Moana Maniapoto and the acerbically witty Damien Grant, join me to unpack the government's controversial plays. From the resurrection of high-octane firearms to the socio-economic chess game of tobacco taxation, we don't just throw punches – we analyze the impact of each policy swing. And when it comes to Winston Peters' media conspiracy theories, we're calling bluffs and taking names. But it's not all policy warfare; the home front is just as heated. As we navigate the housing crisis and pet bond propositions, we question the implications for Kiwi renters and homeowners alike. The appointment of Judith Collins draws scepticism and sparks debate, with the undercurrents of state-funded media and representation for Māori adding fuel to the fire. These conversations push us into the radical middle, where government intervention and free speech principles duel for dominance. We round out our session with a look ahead – and it's a horizon brimming with change. Public broadcasting's lifeline amidst a brutal advertising landscape, political shake-ups hinting at a Labour Party reshuffle, and the U.S. presidential race's potential for fresh faces all come under our microscope. And as we cast an international eye to Israel's strife, we find narratives of hope and resilience. This episode isn't just another political commentary; it's a call to engage, reflect, and challenge the status quo. Today's show opens with the most concrete evidence so far, showing the Legacy/mainstream media works for the Democrat party. They take direction, are given talking points and narratives and it's their job to defend the current Biden regime, especially from the truth. There is no other way to interpret how the press handled themselves over the weekend. Not only did they help find the leaker, they show no interest in discussing the lies this Administration has been peddling around Ukraine for over 14 months. Instead, they would rather find out what the government is planning to do to keep the truth locked down from future leakers? Even Glenn Greenwald, a left-of-center independent journalist is aghast at the behavior of corporate media. Rather than upholding the mantra that “democracy dies in darkness,” they are doing all they can to help turn off the lights. Former CIA officer Larry Johnson has an interesting take on this. Running parallel with my own thoughts from last Friday, Larry thinks the story surrounding leaker Jack Teixeira's tidy take down is too contrived and too neat to be the whole story. In his mind, it's a controlled leak, poorly done, to help prepare America for the coming crash due to all of our foreign policy failures. Also, don't forget what we discussed on Friday regarding the RESTRICT Act and how convenient it would be to use the leaker to push through The Patriot Act 2.0. As we close, I remind you that in a prior show I said I would not be surprised if China didn't decide to make a move on the United States and would send Joe Biden a not so subtle message? Well, it seems a bank tied to China is suddenly cooperating with the Senate investigation into the Biden Crime family business dealings. Cathay Bank in Los Angeles has provided banking transaction details to Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Senator Chuck Grassley (D-IA) related to millions of dollars paid by China to Hunter and James Biden. Finally, Pete Buttigieg wants you to know that car accidents are also racists. Yep. According to him, more black and brown people are killed in roadway accidents, which is a clear sign of racism. To him, it's a crisis on the same level as gun violence, yet we don't see anyone calling to ban the use of automobiles.
