In this episode of the Proper True Yarn podcast, we're joined by the legendary Jeff Perot, a true character from the outback who's lived a life full of wild stories, crazy adventures, and unforgettable yarns. Jeff takes us back to his school days at Saint Brendan's in Yeppoon, where a mate named Bob Beasley became infamous for his hilarious blunders in class. From calling the "sick boy" a "hospital case" to clashing with a forgetful poetry recital, Bob's antics had everyone in stitches. But it's not just schoolyard tales; Jeff shares stories from the bush, including a hypnotism prank that left a mate with soot-covered face and a bewildered mind, and a trip down memory lane with the famous Brian Cohen—aka "The Horse Whisperer."From a wild comedy show at school to the mischief and chaos of the Australian outback, this episode is full of laughs, oddball characters, and true Aussie grit. Get ready for a proper true yarn, as Jeff recounts some of the most bizarre and hilarious moments in his long, adventurous life. You won't want to miss it!#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. Was a great weekend to be in front of the idiot box (for most of it). We recap our night at Hamilton's comedy show, some R and R for Daddy in Yeppoon and we play a game of "Where's Knuckles". We then dive into plenty during Cooking and the News: monkey bar combat sports, microscopic hand bags and of course the Paul VS Tyson card and UFC 309. A bit of old fashioned Grit reminding you all to rip in before we head in to the Doghouse where we make a scientific discovery; all of these yarns involved getting on the sauce, and we wouldn't want it any other way. Enjoy legends and have a great week!Bought to you by Better Beer, now available in over 4000+ bottle shops nationwide: www.betterbeer.com.auEver wanted to watch the Podcast? We're chatting with Amy Andrews, author of the OUTBACK HEAT series. Join this lively conversation about his work! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Amy is an award-winning, USA Today best-selling, triple RITA nominated Aussie author who has written eighty contemporary romances in both the traditional and digital markets and sold over 3 million books. Her books bring all the feels from sass and quirk and laughter to emotional grit to panty-melting heat. She loves frequent travel, good books, and great booze, although she'll take mediocre booze if there's nothing else. For many, many years, she was a registered nurse. Which means she knows things. Anatomical things. And she's not afraid to use them! In 2019, Romance Writers of Australia, an organization she has been heavily involved with for over twenty years, gave her life member status. She lives in the pretty little coastal town of Yeppoon, where she gets to stare at the ocean all day.
Claire Mactaggart amongst other things; has been a contributing writer for - one of Australia's most loved publications - Country Style magazine for 19 years. She's been a lynchpin in opening the eyes of everyday Australians to the the way of life, homes, gardens and businesses of rural and regional people and families - through countless beautiful stories. In this sense I think she's a trail blazer. She also a great example of quiet leadership. Claire is the most lovely person to meet. she's gently spoken, warm and polite - and these trails have not held her back - she's been able to achieve most of the things she has desired all while living 170-odd kms from the supermarket. She is mother to four girls, a beef producer with her husband Andrew, a board director for Beef Australia, the organisation behind, Beef Week, she's transported a disused church to her farm for renovation and her latest project was the six week transformation of a block of units and an old Queenslander at Cooee Bay near Yeppoon, QLD. This is a Manson Podcasting production brought to you with thanks to Rabobank Australia.

Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. I have experienced living in diverse styles of houses and lifestyles in different locations and climates around Australia. Why? I must have some gipsy in my blood. I'm curious to experience lifestyles that look interesting to me—different modes of transport, daily routines and activities. I may never have experienced different house styles and climates if I had never changed location. I lived in a motorhome for three years while exploring Australia. I've house and pet sat around the Gold Coast, Yeppoon and Brisbane Queensland, with different breeds than I have owned dogs and cats. All of these amazing and interesting experiences have enriched my life. You can read my poems at Simply Story Poetry on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and LinkedIn and simplystorypoetry.com. Harry Grant is only 25 years old which is hard to believe given the accomplishments and the character displayed by the Melbourne Storm Hooker. Harry has now played 50 games in the NRL and already has an Origin Series win along with a World Cup medal to his name. In some regards its hard to believe how quickly success has found Harry, however, if you look at his journey from his childhood in Yeppoon all the way up until his Queensland Cup days its no surprise with the amount of resilience needed across Harry's journey that he is reaping the rewards. Harry's humour is infectious throughout this episode as we go back through his upbringing in Yeppoon and talk about his rise to the top which has been nothing short of smooth sailing. I hope that you enjoy and laugh through this episode as much as I did. Pls dont forget to hit follow, subscribe and like to our pages :)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Terry McCosker OAM is the legendary co-founder of RCS Australia. Charles Massy credits RCS as being behind the greatest regenerative agriculture movement in Australia. And throughout its pioneering decades, Pam McCosker has been the unheralded lynch pin. Terry makes no secret of it. Nor did Charles when he wrote in his best-selling Call of the Reed Warbler: “When I look back over the rise of regenerative agriculture in Australia, I see at the forefront Terry and Pam McCosker and their RCS organisation. Today it remains a world leader in the field.” But almost incredibly, this is the first time Pam has ever appeared in media. Well, on the cusp of their 50th wedding anniversary next year, and with the zeitgeist coming in a rush to meet their trailblazing work, now seemed like a good time to speak with them together. This conversation was recorded at their home in Yeppoon, Central Queensland, soon after sharing in the extraordinary Convergence event in Brisbane that marked the 30th anniversary of RCS. We debrief on that here, including on some of the major flashpoints emerging right now, and contemplate what might come next. All interspersed in this intimate, at times heart-breaking, and often downright entertaining journey into their life together – their personal convergence. A life forged through unfathomable loss, ultimate successes, and a still deepening call towards the heart of it all. This is the story behind the story of the greatest regen ag movement in Australia. Here's a rough timeline of our conversation: 4m – on home, Convergence, and an intimate, incredibly heart felt and very entertaining chat about their life together, family, the organisation and broader movement 29m - back to Convergence 36m – on Terry's session at Convergence 46m – some of the big breakthroughs coming on, and what Terry's role might be from here 58m – their spiritual journey 68m - where to from here? This conversation was recorded on 3 August 2022. Title slide image: Terry and Pam at home just after this conversation (pic: Anthony James). You can see more photos on the episode web page. Ross O'Reilly is a former champion regional rugby league coach, real estate agent and restauranteur, all on the way to founding his ultimate vision in 2016 – High Valley Dawn. It carries the label ‘permaculture farm', but somehow feels like so much more. Think incredible market garden and food forest, deeply restorative work place and learning centre, grazing animals and thriving community, with all sorts of layers on that. And it's still just getting started. I first learned about Ross when Terry McCosker made particular mention of him when he was in WA late last year. Terry's the legendary founder of RCS Australia who featured on episode 67, and will feature again next week, this time with wife Pam, to talk about the recent Convergence event in Brisbane, among other things. It was after that Convergence event that I drifted back to Yeppoon in central Queensland with the RCS crew, and made tracks for Ross's place. The High Valley Dawn journey began for Ross when a passion for wellness and sustainable development collided with a desire to serve fresh, local, organically grown produce in his nearby restaurant Beaches in Rosslyn Bay. His intention to one day create a self-sustaining community that would fulfil these desires, and help inspire future generations to get back to working in harmony with Mother Nature was set. We've documented for 56 episodes of this show what it's like growing up and living gay in a big city, but what about our dear rural brethren? Well today is your day.Age & Mitch have been asked a lot to talk about the rural gay experience but have avoided it for quite some, having very little to actually say on the matter. Now, with the help of new friend of the show, Esdale, they're ready to dive in. Hailing from the small QLD town of Yeppoon (population 6,000), our hosts take the opportunity to pick his brain on exactly how he survived growing up gay out bush. The boys cover discovering your sexuality in these settings, reactions from family and the neighbours, the importance of a good librarian and the annual crowning of the Pineapple Queen of Yeppoon. Iconic. Discussion turns to the struggles to connect with gay people and gay culture remotely and learning to love who you are. Of course, they couldn't skip the important deets like how to pick up a "straight" man at the local pub and which WWE wrestler might be the key to your sexual awakening. Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. This poem reflects my memory of time spent with my mother. Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers who are listening. I wrote this poem, in 2019, after bringing my clothes in from drying outside in the sunshine on a hot sunny day while living in Yeppoon, Central Queensland. This poem reflects on a pleasant childhood memory that I remember through the smell of clothes that have been dried in the hot summer sun. The Wilted Rose is a novel based on the good, the bad, the happy and the sad life of my mother and my childhood. Over the next month, I will be publishing poems, exerts from the book and references to songs that reflect the ambience of the moment. You can read my poems at Simply Story Poetry on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn and at simplystorypoetry.com and follow me on Instagram. Thank you. You give me the gift of encouragement by listening to my poems. Beverley Joy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/simply-story-poetry/message
Episode 52 is now Live! Meet Greg McLean. Greg's journey in hospitality started at the age of 18 when his parents bought a coffee franchise. After spending a few years managing their store he decided to move back to the Gold Coast with no intention to ever get back into hospitality. It didn't take long for him to realise working for others wasn't for him so with the support of his girlfriend they opened a small hole in the wall espresso bar in Sunshine Coast called your place. Since then Greg and his partner have gone on to open 10 venues all around Queensland. Greg now owns The Bungalow in Yeppoon, which is going from strength to strength and is also about to launch his third food and music festival called socal Although Greg was faced with many obstacles along the way he has successfully been able to sell all venues he has opened and has built and amazing reputation. I was blown away by Greg's drive, attitude and his ability to make things happen and can't wait for you to all hear his story.
Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story. What if we don't like where God is leading us? How do I process uncertainty around God's Will for my life? How do I proceed with God's Will? As we start a New Year, I decided to write this poem. In 2014, I read the book titled God's Will: Finding Guidance For Everyday Decisions by J.I.Packer and Carolyn Nystrom. This wonderful book answered my questions and satisfied my curiosity about knowing what God's Will is throughout my life. This poem follows last week's poem titled What is God's Will For You in 2022. Last year, we studied Genesis at church. I learnt a valuable lesson from the story of Jacob's struggle with God. I too have struggled with God, many times over His Will for my life. The lastest struggle was before Covid locked down the world in early 2020. I was happy and content living in Yeppoon, a tropical seaside township 800kms away from the Capital City of Brisbane, my home town, from which I had moved 12 months earlier. I had settled into a new church family, working and volunteering in the local community. I had a five-year plan to stay in Yeppoon. This I thought was God's Will. It was, but not for five years. I lost my job, my home and my car broke down within one month. Why God? This doesn't make sense? I was so happy in Yeppoon. Everything had been going so well. I returned to Brisbane to stay for a few weeks to reassess my situation. Two weeks later, Australia went into a Covid lockdown. I spent the lockdown at a friend's home, with only one suitcase of clothing. I grew desperate to return to Yeppoon, but couldn't due to travel restrictions. I had no success in securing accommodation back in Yeppoon, but eventually, I did in Brisbane. But I didn't want to live back in Brisbane. I missed my Yeppoon church community terribly. It took me a year, of struggle to accept this abrupt change in my life. Now I look back and see God's hand directing my affairs. It taught me a big lesson to trust, be patient and accepting of the process God may want to take me through as He unfolds His plan for my future, even though at the time nothing may seem to be going right. You can read my poems at Simply Story Poetry on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and at simplystorypoetry.com. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/simply-story-poetry/message

Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. It is summertime here in Australia, hot and humid in my hometime of Brisbane Queensland. I have been off the air for a month as I spent the week before Christmas Day packing up and moving to a new address, then I made a snap decision to travel north to Yeppoon in Central Queensland for two weeks of casual work and to catch up with close family members for whom I wrote the poem Far Away For Christmas. Today I am back sitting at my new computer desk ready for an exciting year of sharing my poetic writing. I hope you enjoyed listening to my poems throughout 2021 as much as I have enjoyed publishing them. Most of the poems I published in 2021, were poems that I had written over the past 10 years. I have published most of my Christian poems and all of my old general poems except for two collections, which I have been holding back for two special reasons! The reason I have held back the first collection of poems is that my mother's life story will be re-released soon, in 2022, in print and ebook. I will be sharing poems that I wrote about my mother's troubled life around work, health and love, and my difficult childhood as I share the story behind each poem and songs that I have found that reflect the theme of each poem. The novel is titled 'The Wilted Rose' written by Kate Kelsen, a young Australian author who is based on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Kate has written several true story novels, over the past decade and they will be re-released during 2022. I am very excited to announce that the second collection of poems I will be sharing with you, during 2022, are the many poems I wrote about falling in and out of love and getting back up again. These poems will accompany my own adult life story around motherhood, marriage, divorce, travel etc. It is titled "Wilted No More,' written by Kate Kelsen, and is in the final editing and cover design stage and will be available later in 2022. But first, to kick start 2022, I want to encourage those of you who are thinking about creating your 'something' - be it writing, poetry, painting or craftwork etc. to take that first step now, today. If you have already started creating your 'something' but are questioning whether you will continue with it this year, I want to encourage you to keep going. START TODAY. The first thing I do is write out a plan for the year or for a new project, which I will share in more detail at another time. But, for you today, I want you to do something. Take a few minutes to sit still and write down what you would like to create. Write as much detail as you can about the 'something' you want to create e.g. "I've always wanted to write and publish a book, a song, or a poem." "I've always wanted to make/create______" "I've always wanted to paint, draw, photograph." Don't wait any longer. I procrastinated for decades because of fear and self-doubt. Please don't wait any longer. START TODAY. As Paul McCartney sings - DO IT NOW! I did not realize when I started this creative venture in April 2021, that it would be so creatively satisfying in so many different ways. Each Monday I will continue writing My Poetry Story as encouraging short articles, and share in more detail what steps I took toward fulfilling my creative goal, last year, 2021, being the first year of my poetry publishing journey. Every Wednesday I will continue to publish, both written and in audio, a Christian Faith poem and every Friday a General poem. So, connect with me and enjoy this year's creative and poetic journey. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/simply-story-poetry/message
Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. I wrote the last verse in 2018 for my brother and his wife's 35 wedding anniversary. They live in the beautiful seaside town of Yeppoon, where the sun is scorching hot in the Queensland summer. It was while I was walking along the beach that I was inspired by the theme of this poem. I added two verses to explain the inspiration of the poem. These are the family members that I wrote about in my poem titled 'Distant Family and Friends. You can read my poems at Simply Story Poetry on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin and at simplystorypoetry.com. Thank you for listening to my poem. Enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/simply-story-poetry/message
This episode is part two of Andy's chat with Bruce Sloper where they discuss outside jobs to go to with structure, uniforms and discipline They pick up the conversation about leaving the forces space and what that's like for many ex service personnel. Yeah, It can be a little bit scary they agree but there is a pattern that ex military are drawn to. Emergency services, Police, counter-terrorism. The reason being a lot of those organizations in civilian street will be structured. They're got a uniform, a hierarchy, and are disciplined. That's what we're used to and what's missing with people getting out of the services. They get out of a disciplined, well structured organization to nothing and that's a shock. Bruce shared a glimpse of what that was like in his life at that low point. On the subject of PTSD he said information is better now than it was then and outside of war, a road accident, a traumatic incident, or something like that there are different reasons why people get PTSD. You get offered a few resettlement things on the way out of the ADF and then you become a family man, which I learned is another story of many stories. In my case a very supportive wife who looks after the household whether I was there or long periods away. Learning quickly if you come home, and start making home decisions, it doesn't work like that and I soon got pulled up. So you've got to adjust to your family lifestyle. Another adjustment is lack of social interaction with similar minded people when at home. We bought a block of land and I decided to work the land for 18 months, just mend fences and get the feel of the land but missing was the social interaction as we were out in the country. It was a depressing time but taught me to get out and join things and have projects. Bruce went on to talk about specific volunteer or social groups he knows are available and things that tend to be structured. Helping others is a way of moving past your own problems he commented. Andy returned to the important role Bruce's wife played by his side the whole way. Bruce admits she is a calming influence especially when things were really grim during his darkest days. In hind sight, since that period, it's been a successful life in a lot of different ways and in many areas. For the future, they are planning to sell the farm and retire but still be involved in farming. So returning to the questions around suicidal thoughts. When ideally should you seek help? I must admit I didn't but the question is why is that? In this episode, host Andy Fermo speaks with ex- Navy officer and Vietnam veteran Bruce Sloper. With quick thanks and an introduction they hop straight into it. Deciding to tell their story first about how they met, they agreed it was a “pretty bloody good” story. Bruce began, including the accidental counseling story of a young farmer Mum in Yeppoon. Her life's dream was not going very well Bruce explained and depression went with that. He was asked by a third party would I talk with her? As an older veteran Bruce explained he was familiar with “cashflow” problems so after getting to know the farmer Mum, Bruce went to a Veterans web page and put out the call to Young Veterans Central Queensland for help. “Truly I was just floored by the response” he continued enthusiastically. Some 20-30 left me thinking “how am I going to manage so many offers.” Enter Andy and family with Invisible Injuries Charity.Fitting well into the volunteer process and with another friend of Andy's from Toowoomba (S02E10 & 11), the generous response was reduced to two groups. These worker/supporters spent over a week onsite and was a success. All part of networking Andy agreed and part of our civic duty he added. Community mental health is for everyone, not just veterans, first responders and their supports especially during COVID and the times we are living in. For instance fostering a positive mindset is a big one if your on a farm on your own.Andy asked about Bruce's ADF service. He joined as an apprentice in the Navy out of West Sydney and went to sea for 4 years. There was a new system of training apprentices when he joined. So we're in square rig, round rig and the older folk in the Navy labeled us Mobi's. You would associate that with Whales or something like that but not in this case. That system of training went from 1956 to 1972. The RAF in the army and in the Navy were closed down and they went through the TAFE system. The Mobi acronym has hung about all these years and there is pride in the name. At Yeppoon RSL you mentioned the Square Rig stuff and that you were accelerated? It was the petty officers and chief petty officers who could see the skills coming out in the fleet Bruce explained and in those days we repaired things on the move with tradesmen on board. “So that was a great career!” Contact - Bruce SloperMember of: Young Veterans Central QueenslandMember of: Yeppoon RSL sub-branch Help Lines Open Arms (VVCS) | Lifeline | RedSix app"RESPECT, NO POLITICS, WE'RE VOLUNTEERS"Disclaimer: The accounts and stories are "Real lived experiences" of our guests some of the content may trigger Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) symptoms in some of our audience. It’s interesting to see that so many digital marketing experts and trainers like to draw examples of successful businesses on social media as being big brands. “look at this amazing thing that Nike did!” or “Dove beauty products really reached their target audience with this campaign.” When you’re a small swimwear store in Yeppoon or a tiny artisan baker in Leederville, these comparisons don’t feel very helpful. Nike has marketing teams across the globe. Dove ploughs tens of millions of dollars into marketing every year. You are lucky to have $3000 to spend this year. These giants of successful marketing have access to resources that you don’t. They have access to people that you don’t. And they’re in the position to make super creative content that people want to see. You’re stuck making messages that you want to put across. And that’s one of the biggest differences between you and them. How do you find a balance between what you want to say and what people want to see? 1. Start with a sensible goal in mind In big business, they talk about brand awareness and marketplace recognition. In small business, we tend to talk more about marketing’s return on investment. And for us, that can only be measured in sales. Not in metrics like engagement, reach or brand recall. While you’re not expected to think like a corporation, you can take inspiration from them in how you approach your marketing. And most of your marketing effort as a small business needs to be geared to the same stuff that the big guys gear towards. The Awareness stage of the customer journey. This is where you are introducing your brand, products and services to cold prospects. They don’t know you. They don’t want you. But they might one day need you. Gearing too much of your marketing and message towards getting people to buy from you straight away without knowing who or what you are is just not going to work with the kinds of tiny budgets we’re looking at from a small business. And this is why the big guys don’t tend to ask you to buy anything until they’re certain that you know who they are and they’re confident that you’re almost ready to buy. 2. Think about the life that your customer leads It sounds trite, but it really is important for you to understand who your customer is and how they live. Assuming that everyone is focused on you and your needs as a business is egotistical and delusional. You are barely a consideration in your customer’s life, even when they’re shopping around. Your business is the centre of your world. But it’s not the centre of theirs. So to get yourself out of your own bubble of self-importance, you need to understand what your customer desires, requires and hopes to acquire. This means placing your product or service in the middle of all of that. Not forcing a message down about how good you are and why they should choose you. Lead with the problem that someone has, then let them know that there is a solution, suggest that you are the solution, and give them a simple path toward securing that solution. This way you’re starting off with the problem that someone needs solving before you then suggest your solution for that problem.

An exclusive island in Australia's Southern Great Barrier Reef has been put up for sale. Pumpkin Island is 14 kilometers away from the coastal town of Yeppoon in Queensland. The six-hectare island has a secluded beach, library, and cottages that can accommodate around 34 guests. It also has a helicopter pad and a customized 36-passenger boat. Despite its many modern facilities, Pumpkin Island is the first island in Australia to achieve the “beyond carbon neutral” status by offsetting 150% of its yearly carbon emissions. The island has achieved this by using renewable sources of energy and converting rainwater into drinking water through a filtering system. Pumpkin Island is currently owned by Wayne and Laureth Rumble. The couple read about the island in the newspaper and bought it in 2003 for around $909,000. The island was previously owned by Roger and Merle Mason, who acquired it for about $70 after winning it as a prize in a poker game in 1961. Now, the island is back on the market with a $17 million price tag. Based on reports, sales agents are capitalizing on the post-pandemic climate to sell the island. They are highlighting the destination as a possible safe haven in the event of another global health crisis. The Rumbles have opted to sell the property because they have plans to move to New Zealand to be closer to the rest of their family. According to Laureth, leaving the place will be very sad for them because they have been fond of it and the lifestyle that they adopted while living on the island. The couple is hoping that the next owners will be as dedicated as they are in taking care of the island.

Those who followed our travels last year will have heard a number of remarkable stories of pastoralists and farmers bringing land and people back to life. In some cases, their situations had become dire, and land turned to dust. Wherever we went, an organisation called RCS Australia came up in conversation. So we visited them late last year in Yeppoon, Queensland, and had the pleasure to meet legendary founder Terry McCosker and his team. Charles Massy calls RCS one of the key training groups in Australia in regenerative agriculture and holistic grazing, including the business of it all, with “brilliant social learning programs and workshops, and a network of support.” When we visited, New Chair David McLean was there, and we got talking. After a number of fascinating conversations over several days, we subsequently resolved to meet up when he was next doing training in our neck of the woods. David's journey with RCS started as a client. He went on to become General Manager in 2012 and Chair in 2018. He is now a highly sought-after educator, consultant, facilitator and public speaker across Australia. Like Charles Massy, who we feature on podcasts 016 and 032, David's got an invaluable over-arching view of what's happening across Australia and the world in regenerative agriculture. His insights are extensive and instructive, on changes in the movement, on country, in families and communities, in the businesses, in impact investing, in increasingly volatile climate and other forces of change, and importantly in how the thinking about the connections between all these things is developing. When talking about such a holistic approach, and how it relates to life in cities as well, we arrive at themes of trust and connection. Why is trust so central to building the movement? What does success look like? What do we do about the potential co-opting of the term regenerative? Why is ‘going organic' not enough? How can the most meaningful investments and impacts be made? How do we respond to at times diabolical drought, fire and flood? And how do we loosen the hold our cultural stories have on us, to stop riding the unicorn, as David puts it, and operate in a way that's more aligned with the realities of how the living world works? When in Perth recently, David dropped by Anthony's place for this conversation. Outback Queensland is the last place you would expect to find the headquarters of a swimwear business, but that's exactly where you'll find the home base of Coola Cozzies. In between working on the farm, she drew up a business plan, and in 2015, launched the business.
