According to Todd W Hall's research in the book relational spirituality the three things most guaranteed to produce spiritual transformation are deep long term friendships, suffering, and contemplative prayer. If it's so impactful, why don't we talk about it more? In contemplative prayer we slow down, listen, and are conformed into the image of God.

"Growing in our relational knowledge of how to connect and love requires a lot of practice. And it requires deliberate practice. We need to focus on specific outcomes that stretch us beyond our current relational knowledge and spiritual maturity level. We need to rely on methods taught in Scripture and developed by spiritual masters further down the road" (Todd W. Hall, The Connected Life). In the early morning hours, Janell found herself tossing and turning. With a God whisper in her ear, she released her desire to stay nestled under the comforter and instead got up and found her Bible. In this unplanned, unexpected episode, Janell shares the deep love of God in the words penned in Psalm 63. She found herself asking, "Do I really believe these words?" In true Lectio Divina fashion, Janell reads Psalm 63, inviting you to ask yourself the same question, "Do I really believe these words?" Join us in this episode as we dig deep into a new conversation about The Connected Life, by Todd W. Hall. This week, we're talking about the power of love that changes everything, especially when we begin to experience God as a safe and secure Father, rather than a distant and threatening judge. In his book, Todd Hall tells about a man diagnosed with schizophrenia who is now functioning well and has a fulfilling life, due in large part to the power of loving connection to overcome genetic vulnerabilities. "Though genetics and medication certainly play a role, they are not the only factors that contribute to our well-being. Connection is also a major factor because we are born to connect." (p. 84) Does this amazing story offer us a fresh perspective on Romans 12:2? What if being conformed to the patterns of this world happens when we're disconnected in our relationships, and being transformed by the renewing of your mind happens when we trust that we have a secure connection with a good, good Father? Join us in this transformative new conversation and linger in these TAKEAWAYS - When we live in a world with fewer and fewer face-to-face connections, we lose the norms of reciprocity and trustworthiness - so we lose the ability to influence and impact each other with the power of love, even though we can still make people do what we want by manipulating them or shaming them. Receiving love requires a relationship of trust. Being pushed around by fear happens without trustworthiness. Walking on a healing journey with a spouse or a few close friends is not always easy, but it is deep and life-giving. Belonging, meaning, and creating real value in the world together is more satisfying than individualism, materialism, or another attempt at rebellion. “It turns out that social disconnection has a profound impact on our experiences with God and spiritual community. The connection crisis we're experiencing at a broader societal level reverberates throughout our spiritual lives.” p. 21, The Connected Life Do you need encouragement to live a fearless story, not a perfect life? The connection crisis in our culture is running parallel to the mental illness epidemic in our world - for us and for our children. The crisis is more than what we see when we notice families sharing a table while all staring at their phones. Connection is not a personal preference or a check off on our to-do list. It's a human need. Without it, we get sick. The real crisis started more than a generation before smartphones kidnapped our attention and we didn't bother to fight our captors. For all of us, the challenge to connect in healthy relationships began before we were born. By the time we learned to talk, we'd already been following a blueprint for relationships, for better or worse. Psychologists call these blueprints "attachment styles." Insecure attachment styles have more power over what we choose to ignore or obey than the rules we know but don't follow. There's not enough behavior modification or willpower to revise an insecure attachment style, but love can do what hard work and self-effort can't. Love can help us find the limiting beliefs hidden in our earliest stories and teach us to tell ourselves truer stories - of freedom, not captivity. Listen in as Doug and Janet start a new conversation about Todd W. Hall's book, The Connected Life - The Art and Science of Relational Spirituality. TAKEAWAYS: Are we offering our children a life Jesus set them free from? What is the impact on their stories? Love is the stuff of connection, growth, healing, and transformation. Fear is the stuff of disconnection, prolonged immaturity, mental and physical illness, and conformity. A “Love Is Fearless Home” is a goal worthy to be your family's rallying cry. Connect with us to plan a John 15 Academy retreat for your small group. We'll sit with you in new conversations about the connection crisis in our culture and the healing love offers in your home. We'll balance comfort and challenge in new conversations that help you find the limiting beliefs standing in the way of your family's healing story. In this episode, Brandon, Linda and Rob finish their conversation on the topic of how we change and grow. The first part of the episode explores the current cultural trend toward tolerance and what we're calling radical acceptance - this idea that no one should have to change anything about themselves if they don't want to and, more than that, the act of asking someone to change is now considered an affront - real love would just accept people however they are. In the second half of the episode, we turn a corner in this conversation to begin to see how the way we've been designed (think neuroscience and the psychology of attachment) shape our approach to change and growth. We also explore how each of the previous approaches - knowledge, action and power - come together as aspects of change and growth that emerge from our attachment to God as his dearly loved children. It's no secret that we live in an increasingly isolated world. The pandemic has only exacerbated what was already a startling trend: loneliness and disconnection have been on the rise for a long time in our society. We long for a deep sense of meaning to make sense of our lives, but we don't know how to find it. Even worse, we often search for it in unhealthy ways that hinder the very thing we're desperate for: genuine relational connection. Join me for a conversation with Todd W. Hall about practical ways to address our mental health and build authentic relationships with God and others. 2020 was an especially challenging year. And this year continues to require some extra effort to start and finish things that matter. Even if you've built a business for yourself (like I did), you can still have creative exhaustion and feel trapped by your work. Maintaining discipline is more critical than having motivation. Preserve your energy and leave some fuel in the tank. Steady, daily progress through discipline allows you to cultivate long-term motivation. When you have autonomy, discretion, rewards that you value, social support, fair policies, and meaningful work, you feel more engaged and less burnt out. In episode 30 of The Incrementalist podcast, you will learn:1. Small, key things to do when you're in a motivation rut and feeling depleted2. Why maintaining discipline is more important than having motivation3. The three key dimensions of the burnout-engagement continuum, as defined by Dr. Christina Maslach and Dr. Michael Lieter: exhaustion-energy cynicism-involvement inefficacy-efficacy 4. The six workplace factors that trigger burnout: workplace overload lack of control over your work insufficient reward lack of community absence of fairness conflicting values 5. External factors and rewards don't always match with internal drivers and intrinsic motivation6. How a unique framework -- the Motivation Code (MCODE) -- helps you to understand what motivates you and why7. The Motivation Code includes 27 motivational themes that are grouped into six motivational families: Visionary Achieve Potential Make an Impact Experience the Ideal Achiever Meet the Challenge Overcome Bring to Completion Advance Team Player Collaborate Make the Grade Serve Influence Behavior Learner Comprehend and Express Master Demonstrate New Learning Explore Optimizer Organize Make it Right Improve Make it Work Develop Establish Key Contributor Evoke Recognition Bring Control Be Unique Be Central Gain Ownership Excel 8. What motivates you does not always include work that you love, but involves work that allows you to accomplish what really matters to you. 9. Use clean fuel to motivate your work and create possibilities, meaning and significance to feel alive and engaged, instead of depleted and drained. Read the Transcript. On Episode 49 of the Impact Makers Podcast, I’m speaking with someone that I admire and respect, and whom I’ve learned a great deal from over the past 10 years through his podcast, his books, and also by sometimes sharing stages with him speaking at conferences and events around the world. Todd Henry positions himself as an “arms dealer for the creative revolution”, and he teaches leaders and organizations how to establish practices that lead to everyday brilliance. He’s the author of five books (The Accidental Creative, Die Empty, Louder Than Words, Herding Tigers, and the latest - The Motivation Code), and he speaks and consults across dozens of industries on creativity, leadership, and passion for work. Todd is also the host of The Accidental Creative podcast, where he offers weekly tips for how to stay prolific, brilliant, and healthy, and it’s been downloaded over 10 million times. When I saw that he was releasing his latest book - his fifth - in early October, I immediately bought a copy to keep my streak going of having read all of his books, and I also reached out to ask if he would join me on the podcast to share more about it with you. I was thrilled when he said yes right away, and I think you’ll enjoy learning more about his books, as well as how you can do the best work of your life. Topics Discussed In This Episode: How starting a podcast in 2005 as a fun side project and creative outlet led unexpectedly to a book deal with a major publisher, and invitations to speak at events all over the world. Why persistence is the key to success at work and in life. What a 5-time published author who hates the writing process loves about writing books. How to structure your life in a way that you’re going to produce great work. How to avoid the seven forces that disrupt your ability to produce work you can be proud of. The five key elements needed when putting your work into the world to ensure it will resonate with people. The leadership framework necessary to lead highly creative people, and to provide the stability and challenge they need to thrive. How identifying your core motivators can help you understand what drives you, and also how you can mitigate any of their negative effects.
