Growing up in a mixed neighborhood during the '60s and '70s had a significant influence on Mario Caldato's Jr. musical style. Living in the golden age of music, he delved into the many different types through his AM radio, which eventually led him to start playing in his first band. The rush he experienced playing live cemented his passion for the art form, and he continued experimenting with different sounds and instruments. As he got older, he became interested in the technical and production side of music, and it is all history from there. Today, Mario Caldato Jr., is a music producer, engineer, record collector, and selector who owns and runs MCJ Studios. He is most renowned for his work as a producer for Beastie Boys, which catapulted his career. He has since worked with many more top names in the industry, such as Young MC, Mellow Man Ace, Tone Lōc, and many more. Mario and Beastie Boys struck a bond, becoming close friends while working together, something he is incredibly grateful for. Mario is continually sharing his musical talents with other artists to help elevate their work and get them on the path to success. In our conversation, he gives an overview of his life growing up and his professional journey to where he is today. We start our conversation by hearing about his musical influence growing up, how his neighborhood impacted his taste in music, his love for AM radio, the experience of his first concert, and why headphones changed his appreciation for music. We discuss the message in the music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, when he first became interested in the technical side of music, what it was like playing gigs in the early days, what he learned from playing in a club, and his first co-production. "All I am is what I’m going after." The Next Reel’s Speakeasy is an ongoing series of ours in which we invite an industry guest to join us and bring along one of their favorite movies to talk about. In this month’s episode, cinematographer Jayson Crothers joins us to talk about one of his favorite films, Michael Mann’s epic 1995 crime drama Heat. We talk about the world-building that Mann does here, giving us fascinating characters on both sides of the law along with the families they struggle to please. We chat about the powerhouse moment when Robert De Niro and Al Pacino finally end up on screen together for the first time and deliberate about Mann’s careful choice of when they’re fully in the same frame together. We discuss the rest of the amazing cast, notable because every role seems to be inhabited by yet another incredible actor. We chat about the nature of women in Mann’s films and why they may seem afterthoughts as compared to the men. We look at Dante Spinotti’s cinematography and the incredible work he does creating a relatively normal-looking Los Angeles. We touch on the editing, the music, the locations, and many other things that went into creating this rich tapestry. And we ponder an alternate universe where Tone Lōc might have played Pacino’s role.  It’s an incredible conversation about an incredible film that certainly has stood the test of time. My guest this week is Neal Tyson, aka The Plural MC. He’s been releasing albums since 2003, including a full-length collaboration with Chris Freeland of Beat Babies / Oxes / Frenemies. We’ve been friends since high school, and he made his debut on my first solo album in 2000. We talk about his days as a high school hip-hop bootlegger, and how this secret hustle widened his musical palette. He tells me about putting his early albums together, and how starting to work with Chris Freeland led him to finding a unique voice. We discuss balancing the passion to make music with the hassle of promoting it.
