Tonight's Jazz Feature had one of the most widely recorded trumpeters from the 50's and 60's who eventually went into other fields after being a big part of Jazz for so many years. Donald Byrd was one of the many young trumpeters who reflected in their own way the influence of the late Clifford Brown, who died at age 25 in a car crash. Byrd along with Lee Morgan were the young heralds of the trumpet in the 50's and in the 60's Freddie Hubbard was added to that list. Byrd recorded a lot and this is from his period just before he left Jazz for other musical pursuits. This band was one he worked with frequently during the mid-60's. The Jazz Feature album is called "Blackjack" . It spotlights a sextet with Byrd leading alto saxophonist Sonny Red (aka Sylvester Kyner), tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, Walter Booker on bass and the always smiling Billy Higgins on drums. The tunes are mostly original creations by Sonny Red and Donald Byrd. Byrd wrote the title track "Blackjack", a hip funky tune. Enjoy this fine date from Blue Note Records.

Before there were influencers, Donald Byrd was busy influencing art and culture through his countless contributions in Dance. As an established force on both coasts with Seattle now his home, the iconic choreographer shares stories, insights and deep feelings that are the culmination of an artist's life well lived.    In this honest conversation with high school senior Gavin M., the legend articulates the significance of an Artist in 2025. He also debunks Drug use and addiction from a years-long struggle that he successfully overcame. He discusses Blackness in America, and how Black people are alchemists that turn pain and oppression into gold. And together they explore the ways that we can achieve more balance, growth and compassion through work on Self.    Donald Byrd has been the Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theater since December 2002. Formerly, he was Artistic Director of Donald Byrd/The Group, a critically acclaimed contemporary dance company, founded in Los Angeles and later based in New York, that toured both nationally and internationally. His career has been long and complex, and his choreographic and theatrical interests are broad. Tonight's Jazz Feature is the American debut album of Alphonso Son "Dizzy" Reece. Dizzy was a very distinctive and creative trumpeter/composer. He was born in Kingston Jamaica on January 5,1931 and has resided in New York since 1959. Although now inactive as a musician, he is still alive and well. This album although recorded in London was the the first American album by Reece and was on Blue Note Records and called "Blues In Trinity" Dizzy leads on trumpet with the great Tubby Hayes on tenor saxophone, Terry Shannon on piano and Canadian Lloyd Thompson on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. They are on 3 tunes then Donald Byrd, the fine American trumpeter is added on the rest. Both Byrd and Taylor were touring Europe and England during the time this date was recorded on August 24,1958. With the exception of two standard tune ballads the rest of the 6 tunes are compositions of Dizzy Reece. This album marked his migration to New York and a long productive career. Make no mistake, Dizzy Reece was a major trumpeter. Enjoy his music tonight on our Jazz Feature.

Today on Conversations on Dance, we welcome Theresa Ruth Howard, founder of Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet, and Katlyn Addison, principal dancer with Ballet West. We first had Katlyn on the podcast in February of 2024 in episode 383, where we talk all about her career. We are happy to welcome Katlyn back on to talk about the upcoming "Pathways to Performance: Exercises in Reframing the Narrative" performance at the Kennedy Center. Theresa was the guest curator of "Reframing the Narrative" at the Kennedy Center for it's inaugural season in 2022 and Theresa is returning again this year with her hand-picked group of dancers coming together from all across the country to feature a newly commissioned ballet and excerpts of recently premiered works by Black choreographers. Katlyn was selected by Theresa in 2022 to be a part of this project and is returning again this year. Tonight's Jazz Feature is an important album recorded in one of the golden years of Jazz: 1959 but rarely mentioned. This album marked the first issued album under a new Blue Note contract by alto saxophone giant, Jackie McLean. Jackie was starting a new phase in career and this album marks the first step and it's a big step. Jackie emerges here from his early influences namely Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. Jackie also has one of the most distinctive sounds that's sometimes raw and harsh but always soulful and full of feeling. On this fine album McLean is featured with a frequent partner, trumpeter Donald Byrd. On piano is the fine Walter Davis Jr. who also composed four of the six tunes on the date. Paul Chambers is on bass and the drums are played by the innovative Pete LaRoca (aka Peter Sims).. All in all "New Soil" deserves recognition as another of the seminal recordings of 1959. Enjoy!

Kenny Garrett has been playing for more than 40 years. Originally from Detroit, he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the late 70s, when it was being run by Ellington's son Mercer. He also played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and with Donald Byrd, Woody Shaw, and Freddie Hubbard. He was a member of a young lions group put together by Blue Note Records in the 80s called Out Of The Blue that also included the late drummer Ralph Peterson, and he was already recording as a leader when he was invited to join Miles Davis's band in 1987. He played on the album Amandla, and was part of the Davis band all the way until the end of Miles's life in 1991. Miles Davis even made a very rare guest appearance on one of Garrett's albums, Prisoner Of Love, from 1989.Kenny Garrett's discography as a leader has taken him in a lot of really interesting directions. His 1995 album Triology, with Brian Blade on drums and either Charnett Moffett or Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, is a really intense, high-energy record that kind of marries bebop language to post-Ornette Coleman freedom, but the real key to the whole thing is the way he executes these really complex melodies on tunes like John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Wynton Marsalis's "Delfeayo's Dilemma," and Mulgrew Miller's "Pressing The Issue." It's a tremendous showcase for his technical command of the saxophone. But the album that first got me interested in his work was Beyond The Wall, a 2006 release that was a collaboration with Pharoah Sanders that also featured Mulgrew Miller on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Robert Hurst on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and on some tracks there were strings and harp and Chinese instruments and a six-member vocal ensemble. It's not spiritual jazz in the way that term is used now, and it's not world music, it's entirely its own thing, and it's particularly fascinating because you might not think of Kenny Garrett and Pharoah Sanders having that much in common, artistically speaking, but they really did. They also recorded a live album together that came out in 2008. Garrett talks about Pharoah a lot in the interview you're about to hear.And Kenny Garrett's latest album is going to surprise a lot of people. It's called Who Killed AI, and it's a collaboration with Svoy, an electronic music producer. Garrett plays alto and soprano sax on it, and all the rest of the music is made with synths and programmed drums. Even the horns are multi-tracked and fed through effects at times. It's structured as kind of a suite — the first track is called “Ascendence,” and there are also pieces called “Transcendence,” “Divergence” and “Convergence.” But there's also a really beautiful version of “My Funny Valentine,” which lays the ballad melody over these kind of shimmering keyboard sounds and a hard drum 'n' bass beat. It's not at all what I was expecting when I was told that there was a new Kenny Garrett album on the way.I'm really glad I had the chance to talk to Kenny Garrett. We discussed his history with Miles Davis and with Woody Shaw, his early musical upbringing, his work with Pharoah Sanders, his approach to synthesizing genres and musics from around the world, and much more. Born in Fairborn, Ohio and raised in California Josiah Woodson started his musical journey under the tutelage of his mentor Khalil Shaheed in Oakland Ca at the age of 14. Beginning in Shaheed's own Oaktown Jazz Workshop among the now prominent musicians like Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stevens, Jonathan Finlayson, and Geoffrey Countrymen, Josiah later went on to complete his undergraduate degree at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Join dance historian Doug Fullington as he takes us through the three works of Pacific Northwest Ballet's second production of the 2023/24 season, LOVE & LOSS. This trio of works created for PNB shines a light on some of the stunning world premieres that our New Works Initiative has created in recent years. Donald Byrd's haunting Love and Loss premiered in 2019, Alexei Ratmansky's stunning tribute to his homeland of Ukraine, Wartime Elegy, followed in 2022, and and the newest new work at PNB, Australian choreographer and Oregon Ballet Theatre's artistic director Dani Rowe's The Window. Recorded in the Nesholm Family Lecture Hall at Seattle Center's McCaw Hall in Seattle, Washington in November of 2023.
