Gopher Tells All: Fred Grandy's Love Boat Stories and More!"Fred Grandy—known to millions as Gopher—takes John Cato on a rich, and at times hysterical behind-the-scenes look at The Love Boat. He recounts his unexpected casting, early skepticism from executives (except Gavin MacLeod and Aaron Spelling), unforgettable adventures filming on cruise ships in China and Turkey and his near death burning mishap while shooting The Love Boat. From writing episodes for The Love Boat and working with legends like Don Ameche, Ethel Merman, and Ricardo Montalban, to hilarious pranks involving Leslie Nielsen's fart buzzer and a monkey brains story in Hong Kong, Fred shares it all. He also reflects on his friendship with the cast, the rise of the cruise industry because of The Love Boat, his son, Charlie's Hollywood writing career, and his emotional path from actor to Congressman. In this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback Podcast, host Tim Williams and co-hosts Ben Carpenter, Chris McMichen, and Nicholas Pepin dive into the classic comedy film 'The Naked Gun.' They discuss their first impressions, memorable scenes, character analyses, and the film's impact on comedy. The conversation also touches on trivia, behind-the-scenes insights, and the film's rewatchability. The hosts share their thoughts on the reboot and reflect on the legacy of the film, highlighting its humor and iconic moments. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:The device that compelled characters to accept commands to kill someone is similar to what the parasitic life forms in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" did.Leslie Nielsen's line about shooting the Shakespeare in the Park performers is a close parody of a line Clint Eastwood said about shooting a rapist in "Dirty Harry".In 1988, The Naked Gun, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and A Fish Called Wanda formed an accidental "steamroller trilogy." Despite their differences, all three classic comedies released that year feature a character getting flattened by a steamroller.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDBhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/71895/18-fun-facts-about-naked-gunhttps://www.watchmojo.com/articles/top-10-hilarious-facts-about-the-naked-gun-1988Some sections were composed by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! Comedy is the hardest genre to get right. Making people laugh once is tough; making them laugh for decades is almost impossible. Yet here we are in 2026, revisiting a film released in 1980 that still lands gags at a rate modern comedies can only dream of. This week on Born to Watch, Whitey and Gow tackle the undisputed benchmark of parody comedy in our Flying High (Airplane) Review, a movie that didn't just spoof disaster films; it rewired comedy forever.Known as Flying High here in Australia and Airplane! Everywhere else, this is the film that taught generations how powerful straight-faced absurdity can be. Serious actors, ridiculous situations, relentless visual gags and a script that fires jokes every few seconds without ever stopping to catch its breath. Watching it again now raises the big question: Does it still work in 2026?The short answer, absolutely. From the opening Jaws parody at the airport to the final moments on the runway, this film never lets up. There are jokes in the foreground, jokes in the background, jokes buried inside other jokes, and blink-and-you-miss-it moments that reward repeat viewings again and again. Whitey and Gow break down just how outrageous the gag density really is, and why that non-stop approach is exactly what modern comedies have lost. The cast is a huge part of what makes Flying High work so well. Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves and Leslie Nielsen all play it completely straight, refusing to wink at the audience even once. That contrast between deadly serious performances and utterly ridiculous dialogue is the secret sauce. Leslie Nielsen, in particular, launches what would become one of the great comedy second acts of all time, delivering lines like “Surely you can't be serious” with such conviction that it somehow makes them even funnier.Whitey and Gow also dig into the sheer insanity of the situations. A full hospital bed loaded onto a commercial flight. A child needing a heart transplant mid-air. Everyone eating the fish except the one person who doesn't get sick. A blow-up autopilot. A guitar smashing passengers in the head as it walks down the aisle. None of it makes sense, and none of it is supposed to.Overs and unders are discussed, with both hosts landing comfortably in the 35 to 40 watch range, a testament to just how embedded this movie is in their DNA. It's the kind of film that was always in rotation growing up, something the whole family could watch, quote and laugh at together. That shared comedy experience is something Whitey argues we no longer get.The episode also explores how Flying High set the template for everything that followed, from Naked Gun to Hot Shots and beyond, while also pointing out why so many parody films failed to replicate its magic. Awareness of what you are, commitment to the bit, and never stopping the joke train.Critical scores still back it up. A 7.7 on IMDb, 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a spot alongside absolute classics in movie history. Not bad for a film that proudly advertised itself as the winner of zero Academy Awards. This episode is packed with favourite scenes, forgotten gags, pop culture moments, questionable jokes that still somehow work, and plenty of Born to Watch side tangents along the way. If you love comedy, parody, or just laughing out loud at things you probably shouldn't, this is one episode you don't want to miss.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Flying High the funniest comedy ever made?Which gag still kills you every time?Could a movie like this even get made today?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or at BornToWatch.com.au#FlyingHigh #AirplaneMovie #BornToWatch #ComedyClassic #MoviePodcast #80sMovies #ParodyFilms #FilmReview #CultCinema #LaughOutLoud

Actor, writer, translator, and founder of Bronx World Film Walter Krochmal joins me to talk about his incredible journey, from studying theater on a scholarship in New England, to performing, translating, and building one of New York's most quietly essential film organizations. We discuss how Bronx World Film was born in the basement of Cannes' Short Film Corner, the post World War II European idea of cinema as a tool for social reconstruction, and why Walter believes true festivals must serve both filmmakers and neighborhood audiences, not the cash grab mentality that's overtaken so many indie fests. In the final segment we dive into two unforgettable film moments: Fellini's LA STRADA, which he calls a paragon of empathy and craft, and the timeless comedy of THE NAKED GUN, where Leslie Nielsen's deadpan genius turns “Nice beaver” into a masterclass in visual timing. Films discussed: LA STRADA (1954) and THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD! (1988) Guest links: bronxworldfilm.org and Instagram @bronxworldfilm

Joined by co-hosts Luke and Ashley, Andy dives deep into two very different films—asking the question every moviegoer wants answered: Is this worth my time? Andy opens with Marty Supreme, a performance-driven drama anchored by Timothée Chalamet. While Andy praises Chalamet's acting as elite—possibly among the year's best—he calls the film exhausting, overly long, and emotionally draining. His verdict? 2.5 stars overall, with a strong performance buried inside a movie many viewers may find frustrating or boring. Is great acting enough if you don't enjoy the story? Next up is Anaconda, a comedic adventure starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Andy appreciates the cast, the shorter runtime, and a handful of funny moments—but says the script, humor, and pacing fall short. His final score: 1.5 stars for quality, calling it watchable but forgettable. Which movie divides audiences the most? Which one sounds like a total miss—or a guilty curiosity? Andy breaks it down so you don't waste your movie night. Marty Supreme - Review begins at 17:39 * ⭐ Quality: ⭐⭐½ (Andy's personal take: ⭐½) *

Look, we all knew it had to come to this eventually. A parody of 'The Exorcist' starring Linda Blair herself, opposite none other than Leslie Nielsen as the priest who exorcised her, with color commentary by pro wrestler and future Governor of Minnesota Jesse 'The Body' Ventura? How could anyone possibly resist? So yes, let's all see Linda Blair get 'Repossessed', as the Devil comes back for another round and tragedy becomes comedy becomes farce.

Health clubs and aerobics were all the rage in the early 80s, thanks to Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons. Eventually, this trend was bound to hit scripted television. It did, in comedic form with Leslie Nielsen playing a former health show host turned health club owner. Alas, this show didn't pump up the viewership and its membership was cancelled after just 5 episodes.

This week, we're doubling up with Zero Hour! (1957) and Airplane! (1980), two films forever linked by turbulence, tension and parody perfection. Directed by Hall Bartlett, Zero Hour! is a no-nonsense disaster thriller where Dana Andrews plays a guilt-ridden ex-pilot forced to land a crippled airliner after the crew succumbs to food poisoning. Ruthlessly straight-faced, it laid the blueprint for the genre's melodrama and moral gravity.Fast-forward to 1980, and Jim Abrahams along with David and Jerry Zucker hijack the entire premise to create Airplane!, one of the most beloved spoof comedies of all time. With Robert Hays as the PTSD-plagued pilot and Leslie Nielsen delivering deadpan gold, Airplane! reuses Zero Hour!'s plot beat-for-beat...just with more inflatable autopilots and jive-talking passengers. Is this a case of high-stakes drama giving way to high-flying farce, or proof that comedy is just tragedy plus a punchline? Listen on to find out!Zero Hour! is not on Metacritic's all time movie list!Airplane! is movie 2335 on Metacritic's all time movie list!Join Colin & Niall as we embrace the weird, the wonderful, and the downright awful of cinema!Contact us: itwasamoviepodcast@gmail.comSpotify: It was a movie..Spotify pageFollow, rate & review us here:https://linktr.ee/itwasamovieYoutube: It was a movie channel...Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itwasamovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/itwasamoviepodcast/X: https://x.com/itwasamoviepodTikTok clips & highlights: https://www.tiktok.com/@itwasamoviepodSee all our ratings & reviews: Google SpreadsheetIMDb List: IMDb | Letterboxd: Letterboxd

This time on Offstage ONscreen, hosts Todd Kramer and Robert Nelson dive into the legacy reboot of the classic franchise, The Naked Gun (2025). The film follows Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) — son of the iconic Leslie Nielsen character — as he takes up the mantel of the original's absurdly competent‑yet‑clueless cop. He pairs with femme fatale Beth (Pamela Anderson) and a gag‑heavy ensemble (including Paul Walter Hauser and Danny Huston) in a brand‑new spoof‑saturated investigation of murder, mayhem and… a possible Halloween‑store forced‑conversion of the whole Police Squad. Todd and Robert raise the question: does this reboot honour the spirit of the original, or simply rely on nostalgia glitz and star power? With Neeson leaning into deadpan absurdity and the gags flying every few seconds, the tone is unmistakably nostalgic — but whether the film lands is left for debate. Will audiences laugh as hard as they hoped? Will this become the new benchmark of spoof comedies, or fall into the reboot‑trap of "funny in theory"? Tune in as Todd Kramer and Robert Nelson dissect performances, direction (Akiva Schaffer) and the very identity of what "The Naked Gun" means in 2025.

Starting out after college, with a borrowed video tape deck and camera, the soon to be legendary trio created the Kentucky Fried Theater, on the UW Madison campus, and moved to California in 1972, quickly becoming the most successful small theater group. in Los Angeles history. After parlaying this success into The Kentucky Fried Movie, the three conceived the idea that would create a whole new film genre. Airplane! (1980) broke all conventions, featuring dramatic actors like Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen performing zany jokes with straight-laced sincerity. The spoof became the surprise hit of 1980, beginning a streak of hilarious movies including Top Secret! (1984) and Ruthless People (1986), after which David branched out on his own to direct The Naked Guns (1988, 1991, 1994), BASEketball (1998), Scary Movies 3 (2003), and 4 (2006), and others. David also found time to produce the successful, but somewhat less hilarious A Walk in The Clouds (1995) and Phone Booth (2002), and recently completed a feature script, The Star of Malta, a comedy set in the Film Noir era, and an international spy thriller, "Counter Intellijence!". In this episode, Brent and Paul crack open a few cold ones and journey back to 1956 with the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet. From Robbie the Robot's wisecracks to Leslie Nielsen's pre-Airplane! straight man days, the guys dive deep into what made this groundbreaking film so ahead of its time — stunning special effects, psychological storytelling, and the unmistakable seeds of Star Trek and Star Wars.Along the way, Paul toasts a major life change with a Cadillac margarita (and maybe one too many green drinks), Brent praises the annual return of Oktoberfest beer, and the conversation swerves from naval analogies to quantum consciousness to why “Monster from the Id” still hits hard today. It's two kind-of-old guys, one legendary movie, and plenty of sci-fi banter — all in true Beer and Ray Guns fashion.

From rubber bats to ballroom bites, we ask the ultimate question: does Brooks' final parody still have life after dark?

We explore standout performances by Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen, and how the film balances teen drama with grisly murder. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a closer look at the Season 14 episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by comedy legend Leslie Nielsen. Once known for serious dramatic roles, Nielsen reinvented himself as a master of deadpan comedy in classics like Airplane!, Police Squad!, and The Naked Gun. His hosting stint on SNL proved just how sharp his comedic timing really was. From his clever opening monologue on the differences between drama and comedy, to the game show spoof Snap Decision, to a biting parody of celebrity-endorsed products, Nielsen delivered one memorable sketch after another. Nick shares behind-the-scenes details about the show and even includes an interview with Nielsen about his unlikely transition into comedy. This episode of SNL also marked the very first appearance of Wayne's World, which at the time was just an odd late-night sketch filled with rough edges and questionable material. Nick plays it back in full and lets you decide if the sketch showed early signs of greatness. It's a celebration of Leslie Nielsen's comedy chops and one of SNL's milestone moments. [Ep 142]

To celebrate one of the most popular shows in television history, ABC's "The Love Boat," Frank sits down with author and historian Jim Colucci ("Love Boat Forever: An Unauthorized Tour of the Lido Deck"), actor-comedian Murray Hill ("Somebody Somewhere") and Vicki Stubing herself, actress Jill Whelan, for a lighthearted (and revealing!) conversation about the long-running romantic comedy-drama. In this episode, the panel discusses the generosity of Aaron Spelling, the innocence (and absurdity) of the show's storylines, the gallery of legendary guest stars and the series' lasting impact on popular culture. Also, Murray teams with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jill remembers Leslie Nielsen (and "Airplane!"), Jim shares a special moment with Ricky Martin and Frank shares a very special Jack Jones duet. PLUS: Remembering Ernie Anderson! Jill hangs with Andy Warhol! Debbie Reynolds works blue! Carol Channing eats a Twinkie! And "The Love Boat" inspires the "Amazing Colossal Podcast"! Send us a textRemember The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad? We thought it was hilarious when we were kids. However, we also watched Pee-wee's Playhouse regularly and got excited when Knight Rider came on. So what did we know? We have some predictions. One, it might be a tad offensive, and two, it might be a little 80s-centric, which is okay with us. So join us as we go back to 1988 and watch Leslie Neilson and O.J. Simpson in The Naked Gun.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

The NAKED GUN legacy sequel is in theaters today, but it's not like we needed a reason to revisit the raucous original from 1988. Listen separately or laugh right along with as as we talk through the Leslie Nielsen comedy classic based on the short-lived TV series POLICE SQUAD!
Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to the creator of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, David Zucker about how he and his brother went from being class clowns in Milwaukee to launching a hit comedy troupe in a bookstore theater; how his first movie The Kentucky Fried Movie became a huge success that made its money back on opening weekend; the struggle to sell Airplane! and why they insisted on casting serious actors like Robert Stack and Peter Graves; how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar landed his role because he wanted a $30K rug; how directing required precise comedic timing; how veteran actors were skeptical of the film until the end; the real origin of The Naked Gun; why Zucker and his team decided to direct their films, how the failed Police Squad! series evolved into The Naked Gun movie; how he was able to remake serious actor Leslie Nielsen into a perfect comedian; why Ricardo Montalbán forced him to rewrite certain jokes; what it was like to work with O.J. Simpson; the original idea to reboot Naked Gun as a Mission: Impossible spoof featuring Leslie Nielsen's son; how Paramount execs initially loved the script but then gave the project to Seth MacFarlane; why Zucker wouldn't cast Liam Neeson and disagrees with the reboot's tone and CGI; why Hollywood no longer understands comedy; and much more. He needs that money, because he also gets really into yachts, and yacht decor. He stars in a movie about himself. He is also sued by just about everyone, and is arrested for a brutal baseball bat attack on movie executive, that dared mention the existence of Evel's mother, in a tell all book!!Start to tone down your jumps, because getting injured hurts your golf game, star in a movie, even though you can't act, and attempt to murder a man, in front of dozens of witnesses with Evel Knievel - Part 8!!Check us out, every Tuesday! We will continue to bring you the biggest idiots in sports history!!
