Peter Relic is the author of Bust a Move: Matt Dike, Delicious Vinyl, and the Hip-Hop Hits That First Conquered Pop. The book tells the fascinating story of how a surfer dude from Southern California and a guy who grew up on the east coast in a Jehovah's Witness family formed a partnership to create one of the most successful record labels of the 80s. Peter breaks it down and tells us how these two men were able to start a hip-hop phenomenon with ground- breaking songs from Tone Loc and Young MC. Learn more about your ad choices. Christian has John Pette back in the sidecar to spend the entire show talking to author Peter Relic about his new book "Bust A Move: Matt Dike, Delicious Vinyl, and the Hip-Hop Hits That First Conquered Pop" about the record label Delicious Vinyl whose roster included both Tone Loc and Young MC.
Martina McBride. The Commodores. Brett Michaels. Young MC. One by one, they're dropping out of America's 250th birthday celebration — and the reason they're giving doesn't hold up. They called it "nonpartisan." But when Obama hosted, the celebrities were dripping off the stage. Lance Wallnau breaks down the celebrity exodus from the America 250 concert, the federal judges who stripped Trump's name from the Kennedy Center the same week, and why a New York Giants quarterback had to apologize to his team for simply introducing the President of the United States. Plus — what Jesus' parable of the tares and the wheat tells us about why the left cannot coexist in the same field with anyone who disagrees. In this episode:
Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, Morris Day, Young MC, and other artists have pulled out of the Freedom 250 concert series after saying they believed it was supposed to be a nonpartisan celebration of America's 250th birthday, not a Trump-linked political event. Who's left to play the party now, and what does it say when even nostalgia acts don't want to get dragged into the politics of 2026?
On today's show, Scoot talks about Vanilla Ice saying he'd perform for the Freedom 250 concert and shares stories about his encounters with David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs. Also, The White House's pressure campaign against critics keeps raising serious questions about free speech in America. Is freedom of speech really under attack right now, and are we doing enough to protect it when the target is someone we don't like? Finally, Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, Morris Day, Young MC, and other artists have pulled out of the Freedom 250 concert series after saying they believed it was supposed to be a nonpartisan celebration of America's 250th birthday, not a Trump-linked political event. This week on The Necessary Conversation, Bob is still on the mend and Haley is galavanting so Chad and Mary Lou wade into conversations about:
Our two heroes discuss the cross-marketing of the new Mountain Dew/Blue Origin flavor, the 250th Concert-Turned-Rally fiasco, how FIFA gouges, and how Knicks fans might actually be worse.
A star-studded musical celebration is in the works for the United States' 250th birthday, but more big acts have been backing away. Trump's administration had publicised multiple headliners for a 'Freedom 250' concert series between 25 June and 10 July, but Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, Young MC and the Commodores all confirmed they were pulling out. This leaves Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, and Flo Rida in the lineup, but Trump is reportedly considering cancelling the musical performances altogether. US correspondent Richard Arnold says Trump is considering hosting a 'Make America Great Again rally' instead. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, Martina McBride is one of many artists who have now canceled for President Trump's ‘Freedom 250' concert this summer. In part of an initiative planned by the Trump administration, fans took to social media to criticize the artists on the roster for performing. Morris Day, leader of the Time, announced that a performance by his funk ensemble was “a no for me,” and others soon followed suit, including William King of the Commodores and Young MC. Also Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Joan Baez, and more artists and activist are among the star-studded lineup for Tom Morello's Power to the People Festival this October Former first lady Jill Biden is now the target of ire among former Biden administration officials for her recent comments expressing the shock she said she had while watching her husband's now-infamous debate performance. Multi-talented singer/songwriter DeeAnn has received numerous well-deserved accolades in her hometown of Buffalo, New York's 10th Annual “JazzBuffalo” musical greats poll. She was awarded “Jazz Female Vocalist of the Year”, receiving the most votes for her still-popular 2023 album “It's My Time”, and was chosen runner-up for “Most Memorable Performance” and the “John Hunt Jazz Artist of the Year” Award. Her new single “Simply Beautiful,” was been released, which is a sensual, deep soul bluesy twist on an early 70's Al Green song from his landmark #1 Billboard album “I'm Still in Love with You”. She collaborated with her new producer Ted Perlman, on this song and the upcoming new album featuring both originals and re-imaginings of classic songs from various eras. Working with Perlman puts DeeAnn in the classic company of the multi-genre greats he has produced, arranged, recorded, and toured with over the past five decades - including Burt Bacharach, Whitney Houston, Manhattan Transfer, Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan, Ronald Isley, Jermaine Jackson, Edwin Hawkins, CeCe Winans, Brian Wilson, Dr. Dre, Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker, Chicago and Young MC. She joined the podcast to discuss it all. Podcast Host: Toni Ann Marcolini

Send us a Text Message.Tag Team is a hip-hop duo from Atlanta, Georgia, consisting of members Cecil Glenn (DC the Brain Supreme) and Steve Gibson (Steve Rolln). They are best known for their 1993 hit single "Whoomp! (There It Is)," which became an iconic party anthem and a staple of 1990s pop culture.Formed in the early 1990s, Tag Team quickly gained recognition for their energetic and catchy musical style. "Whoomp! (There It Is)" was released on July 20, 1993, and its infectious beat and memorable hook propelled it to the top of the charts. The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for an impressive 45 weeks. Its popularity was not limited to the United States; it also became a global hit, receiving widespread airplay and making Tag Team a household name. The success of "Whoomp! (There It Is)" was further solidified by its presence in numerous movies, TV shows, and commercials. The track's enduring appeal can be attributed to its high-energy vibe and universal party appeal. Even decades after its release, the song continues to be a favorite at sporting events, weddings, and parties. In 2020, Tag Team experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to a Geico commercial that featured a humorous twist on their famous song. The commercial, titled "Scoop! There It Is," debuted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a viral sensation. In the ad, DC the Brain Supreme and Steve Rolln are seen in a suburban kitchen, helping a family make ice cream. Instead of "Whoomp! (There It Is)," they sing "Scoop! (There It Is)," cleverly replacing the original lyrics with ice cream-related terms. The commercial's playful tone and nostalgic nod to the 1990s struck a chord with viewers, leading to widespread acclaim and renewed interest in Tag Team. The Geico commercial not only reintroduced Tag Team to a new generation of fans but also showcased the duo's enduring charisma and sense of humor. Their willingness to embrace their past success and adapt it to a modern context demonstrated their versatility and relevance in the ever-evolving music and entertainment industry.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. As the "vinyl resurgence" continues to go full speed ahead, the mastering side of things is in great hands with Cicely and other mastering engineers taking the baton from their predecessors. This episode has it all: science, music, laughs, and some name dropping (mostly by me). Let's jump into this terrific conversation now on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Sassy embarks upon its third year with a fun, kicky feature on a girl whose parents committed her to a mental institution for what sure seem like spurious reasons. Christina gets heteronormative about one-night-stands, starting with the assumption that you, a girl, might not want to have one. A list of the 20 coolest women hasn't aged well the whole way through (although "Mom" probably still rocks). All this plus another weird short story, Young MC abandoning his whole ethos to pretend he doesn't use pick-up lines, all the ginseng news you can handle, and much much more! QUICK LINKS
