Today we have Lisa. She is from Brisbane, Australia and took her last drink on February 24th, 2022.   Sponsors for this episode include: Better Help – 10% off of your first month   If you have quit drinking and are looking for new alcohol-free friends, Café RE is the social app for sober people. With 24/7 access to a like-minded community committed to living alcohol-free, you'll never feel alone on this journey.    [02:35] Thoughts from Paul:   Healing from alcohol addiction is more about restoring the original circuitry we arrived on the planet with, opposed to learning anything new. You already have everything you need to quit drinking. There is nothing wrong with you, we simply need to remove the layers of muck, grime, false stories and incorrect paradigms that we have accumulated over the years of living in a toxic culture.   As you clean up your inner mess, you're also laying the foundation for others to begin their healing process. When you heal, others around you heal.   [07:27] Paul introduces Lisa:   Lisa is 45 years old and lives in Brisbane, Australia. She runs a residential rehab for women. For fun, Lisa enjoys CrossFit and the community that comes with it. She has a 21-year-old son.   Lisa first tried alcohol when she was 17. It was an issue from the first time she picked it up. Once she got the feeling in her system, she just kept going. This continued until she was pregnant with her son who was born when she was 24 years old.   When her son was 13 months old, Lisa became a single mom and wanted to find herself again as he started to get older. With her mom helping her with her son, she was able to start going out to meet people and says the only way she knew how to do that was with alcohol involved. Lisa says she thought to be sociable, you had to drink.   There were times when Lisa was able to abstain for extended periods while focusing on her son and fitness, but she always went back to it. She found herself using drinks as a reward to get through the weekdays and then would binge drink on the weekends. This cost her multiple jobs in the fitness and nutrition world. Lisa found herself blaming everything but herself or her drinking.   Lisa had been working on getting sober for quite a while but had always been trying to do it for other people or jobs. A few years before her sobriety date, she had a revelation that she had to quit drinking for herself. She was able to go 500 days from that point and says she wasn't doing the work suggested to her and ended up drinking again. At this point she was adding other substances to her drinking. A weekend camping trip in November 2021 ended badly for Lisa and after her partner picked her up, she shared that she didn't want to live anymore. The fact that she felt that way scared her.   When her son questioned her about going to rehab, Lisa told her she couldn't because she had so many other obligations. The drinking continued and she would start going to lengths to try and conceal it. After a weekend away with her son, she found herself on a balcony consumed with suicidal thoughts. It was then that she called a rehab to try and get help. Within a few days, she travelled 8 hours south to start rehab.   Lisa says her connection to herself is now authentic. She no longer looks to others or external things to make her happy. Lisa feels free and can now be grateful for her addiction because of where it has led her. She knows she has to put herself and her recovery first which was hard in the beginning. And now after three years, she still makes sure to attend meetings and do what needs to be done to stay sober every day.   Lisa's parting piece of guidance: just put it down one day at a time. And if it takes one minute at a time, one hour at a time, whatever it is that you need to do to get off the booze, there is a better life out there for you.   Recovery Elevator Go big because eventually we'll all go home. This week, Lisa Topp joins us to talk about the role of behavioral aides or "shadows" in schools, focusing on how they help children with unique behavioral challenges thrive in the classroom. Lisa is a board-certified behavior analyst with a master's in Applied Behavior Analysis and more than a decade of experience in private practice. She provides 1:1 support for children and teens with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other behavioral challenges, along with parent coaching. In this episode, we dive into the types of challenges that might indicate a need for a behavioral aide, such as social conflicts, difficulty accessing the curriculum, or challenging behaviors such as refusing to participate. Lisa addresses some of the most common concerns from parents, especially around the stigma of having a shadow in the classroom, sharing how a well-designed support system can improve a child's behavior and relationships with classmates. Our conversation also touches upon the nuances of securing an aide in public vs. private schools and the importance of advocating for children's needs. Lisa highlights why it's important to monitor progress and ensure that children gain independence over time. She also talks about strategies like visual schedules and reinforcement systems to help children stay on track. By the end of this episode, parents are sure to have a better understanding of how behavioral aides can make a huge difference in their child's educational experience and how they can best take on the process of getting the right support in place.  Show Notes: [2:33] - Behavioral aides support children in various school activities, addressing issues such as challenging behaviors. [5:53] - The stigma around classroom shadows is ultimately outweighed by their benefits. [7:38] - Lisa discusses how public and private schools differ in their approach to providing shadows. [10:07] - Some schools don't approve shadows for children, which creates further challenges for families looking for support. [12:52] - Lisa argues that children usually appreciate shadow support. [15:07] - Lisa explains how families and shadows meet to make child-friendly introductions and discuss the support plan. [17:32] - Some children need long-term shadow support. [19:23] - The need for a shadow in high school often indicates significant challenges that require academic support or a new school placement. [21:42] - To address struggles, Lisa assesses skills, collaborates with teachers, and occasionally involves additional specialists. [24:49] - Understanding underlying learning challenges helps address behaviors and reduces anxiety, preventing further issues. [25:35] - Lisa discusses how adjusting assessments, such as offering oral tests, helped a student with dysgraphia excel despite writing struggles. [27:39] - Assessments ultimately seek to find the best support, track progress and involve parents in home strategies. [29:03] - Hear how Lisa observes family dynamics, creates plans, and uses visual schedules to support children at home. [30:34] - Learn how proactive strategies can help prevent challenging behaviors. [33:48] - Lisa argues that consistent planning across home and school, along with advocacy, is important to support children. Under Bob's direction, Murphey re-released his 1970's hit single “Wildfire” as a new mix with the popular country group “Lonestar”, appearing on mainstream radio after an absence of over 20 years, with over 400 country stations playing his hit song, along with appearances on television, including CBS's “Late Night with David Letterman”. Bob has also overseen television promotion and infomercial marketing campaigns for various country, pop, and Christian artists. He has produced, co-produced, and marketed numerous concert DVD projects, including Tommy Cash's “Fade to Black” concert and Eric Durrance's “Turn It Off” video (which climbed to #17 on GAC's “Country Countdown” charts). Other various television credits include the “Celebration for Young Americans” television concert special for George H. Bush's 1989 presidential inauguration, the “Billy Preston Live in Atlanta” concert, and the USO's “Operation Homecoming” television concert special filmed aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier during Desert Storm.  In 2015, Bender entered a new direction by beginning production on a television series titled “Songs in the Spotlight,” the first season of which was picked up by Hulu.  In addition to his television credits, Bob has produced multiple album projects, including a live-in concert CD for Grammy-award-winning artist Billy Preston, Gospel recording artist Joanne Cash (Johnny Cash's sister), Americana act Steven L. Pull out two strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum and submit them in the little box to listen to our episode on the Farenghi, Star Trek The Next Generation's first attempt at a recurring villain race which went incredibly poorly for everyone concerned. From their first appearance in the show when they act like incredibly hyperactive gerbils in the The Last Outpost to their most recent focus in Star Trek Prodigy where we find out more about Dal's past and the conflict between his old life and his new life in First Con-tact to one of Deep Space Nine's many attempts to bring nuance to the species in Family Business when Quark and Rom have to deal with their mother Ishka's becoming involved in what passes for First Stage Feminism in a culture where women can't wear clothes. What a perfect alien race to talk about the day before the British Election gets the money grabbing Tory's out of power after 14 years! Who says Star Trek isn't political? If they do, make them put three strips of latinum in the appropriate hole! EPISODES INCLUDED: The Last Outpost (13:39), First Con-tact (43:35), Family Business (01:03:43) Talking Points Include: They Live and Ironic 4th July movies (we didn't watch ‘They Live,' but instead we watched ‘Slap Shot'), we briefly touch on the inevitable rousting of the Torys, the unfortunate antisemitic coding of the Farenghi, BE INTIMIDATED BY MILES' ARMS! The Robocop vs. The Terminator crossover by Dark Horse Comics, (CORRECTION: Frank Miller HAD started writing and drawing ‘Sin City' the year before) the Monster of the Week RPG, back to the Season One well of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Bee-Gees, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam, where IS the Enterprise's Engineer? Geordi's weird ‘oooooh-wee!' could the Farenghi ever have been a threat? Doctor Who's own Farneghi the Slitheen and how they killed Charlie's interest in Doctor Who back in 2005, the Farenghi design and how it's immediately undercut, Armin Shimmerman giving some great vibes this early on, how this remakes ‘Errand of Mercy,' Captain Picard does a swear, that one episode of ‘The X-Files' what Stephen King wrote contained a swear, Transformers: The Movie dropping a ‘S-Bomb,' Are we actually watching ‘The Mighty Boosh? We want Matt Berry to be a Star Trek Alien, Adele (sound goblins ate anything we had to say further on Adele, apologies for the weird edit) WHY IS ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS' the US Number One in January? Kid Kapici, Sea Power is a Hometown Band, Dal has a Yondu. Charlie is a freak, Charlie also likes to equate Dal from ‘Prodigy' to Poochie, Prodigy excelling at non-humanoid aliens, cartoons for kids these days don't have as much as a reset button as they used to, Prodigy finally does a Starfleet, Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis style decompression in relation to Picard, eventually Charlie will learn how to pronounce René Auberjonois' surname, Living Joy, Montell Jordan and THIS IS HOW WE DO IT, Charlie's love of KINECT Dance Games, Jake Sisko is disturbingly obsessed with his dad's love life, Quark is the lone conservative in a strangely progressive Farenghi family, THE RETURN OF JEFFREY COMBS, Farenghinar is the future tech-bros want, (CULTURAL NOTE: Rounders is the British equivalent of ‘Baseball,') how old is Jake Sisko? At this point during the episode, the weekly Madison Tornado siren test starts going off, Charlie deals with his own FCA in real life, Farenghi culture and their home world is almost set up to be a Gilliam-esque nightmare, once more a reminder that Miles didn't watch ‘Rejoined' for the Trill episode, this isn't a Farenghi Comedy Episode.

Hubert Eaves IV is well known for his incredible playing on Erykah Badu's 1997 live album, entitled "Live." Bass players across the globe are blown away by his tight, crisp pocket playing, locked in perfectly with drummer Poogie Bell. What a lot of people don't know is that Hue had been laying it down for years before the Erykah Badu album. Hubert's father, Hubert Eaves III, was a renowned keyboardist and producer who was part of the band Mtume....you know, the guys who wrote that groove sampled by Notorious B.I.G. for "Juicy." His father was also half of the duo D-Train and wrote and produced for many artists including Jocelyn Brown and Whitney Houston. HEIV picked up both bass and drums at a young age and began to learn the ins and outs of performing and recording music. At the age of 21 he would play bass on Jocelyn Brown's hit single "Ego Maniac." You can hear how nasty his groove was even at age 21 on this track. Since then along with Erykah Badu, HEIV has played with Will Downing, Seal, The O'Jays, Freddie Jackson, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam and many others. HEIV is also a talented composer and producer and has four self titled singles out which feature some of most funky-ass grooves you'll ever hear entitled: "Radio," "Dot-Da-Dah," "Incubated Funk," and "Get Up." His collaboration with his wife, Alisa Ohri, on her album "Cuz I Feel" is also a must listen for all bassists. In this episode we talk about how Hue built up his incredibly funky groove, the advantages of being a bassist and drummer and how he originally turned down the Erykah Badu gig....twice!

I've been wanting to do a Freestyle mixtape for a while now. I have cool memories of this music booming out of little Suzuki Samurais and Honda Civics in the late '80s during family vacations to the East and West Coasts. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of archived radio DJ mixes from the late '80s and was inspired to pull together some tasty Rap, Freestyle, Electro, Post-Disco, and House for this tape. I only recently became aware of the original version of 'Show Me Love' and found an unopened copy on Discogs, so the version at the end of this set is a genuine needle drop. A brief introduction to the Freestyle genre: Emerging in the early 1980s in the United States and originating in the urban Latino communities of New York City and Miami, Freestyle was characterized by a blend of synthesizer and drum-heavy electronic beats, Latin percussion, and emotive, often dramatic singing. Notable artists include Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Stevie B, and Exposé. Internationally, the impact of Freestyle was more nuanced. In Europe, while synth-pop, new wave, and house music were more dominant, elements of Freestyle influenced the emerging Eurodance scene. Meanwhile, in Japan, Freestyle was overshadowed by genres like J-Pop and city pop, along with various other forms of Western music. While its core fanbase resided in cities like New York and Miami, Freestyle's popularity was embraced in club scenes nationwide and received considerable radio play, particularly on urban contemporary, dance, and R&B stations during its peak in the late 1980s. This era marked the height of Freestyle's run in the charts with songs like 'Fascinated' by Company B, 'Crush on You' by The Jets, 'Point of No Return' by Exposé, 'Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)' by Samantha Fox, and 'Tell It to My Heart' by Taylor Dayne. Freestyle's influence persisted into the early '90s, notably in Eurodance with international hit songs like 'Rhythm of the Night' by Corona and 'Be My Lover' by La Bouche, which exhibited similarly catchy choruses and uptempo rhythms, but with much denser and slicker production. While in the Latin music scene, especially in the early to mid-1990s, Latin Freestyle, a subgenre, saw artists like Selena infusing traditional Latin sounds with Freestyle's electronic beats and rhythms. Freestyle remains a distinctive and memorable part of 1980s music culture, representing a unique fusion of sounds that captured the energy and diversity of its era. Fantasy 3 - It's Your Rock Pretty Tony - Fix It in the Mix Freestyle - Don't Stop the Rock Trinere - How Can We Be Wrong Sequal - It's Not Too Late Jennette - You Turn Me On Olga - Play Another Song for Me Pretty Poison - Nightime Newtrament - London Bridge is Falling Down (Dub Mix) Beat Street - Breaker's Revenge Bohannon - Let's Start the Dance III (Instrumental Club) Patrice Rushen - Number One (Instrumental Version) N.O.I.A. - The Rule to Survive Import #1 - Set It Off (Party Rock) Connie - Rock Me Lidell Townsell, M T F - Nu Nu (Radio Apella) Robin Stone - Show Me Love (New York Mix) If you're listening on Apple Podcasts, please shoot me a quick 5-star rating, and a positive review if you're feeling generous. Episode 469 - 10 Facts About Americans and Alcohol   Today we have Lisa. She is 66 years old and lives in Atlanta, GA. She took her last drink on November 16th, 2022.   Café RE – use the code OPPORTUNITY to waive the setup fee.   [02:51] Thoughts from Paul:   Paul shares with us ten facts about Americans and their drinking habits that he found in an article from the Pew Research Center.   The article shares with us statistics regarding what people are drinking and where alcohol consumption is the highest, along with statistics about age and income ranges.   The biggest takeaway from this article is the first stat that says, “Only 62% of U.S. adults say they drink” while 38% abstain completely. Not everyone is kung fu fighting. There is a voice inside the head that says, “Everybody drinks”, but right there we just debunked that myth. A lot of people don't drink because they don't want to. Many people don't drink because their forced to. Whatever the reason is, about 40% of Americans don't drink.   And although alcohol consumption is rising, we're seeing the younger generations say no, like no previous generation has done so.   Check out Sober Link.  You can find some tips and can sign up for a $50 off promo code.     [10:00] Paul introduces Lisa:   Lisa is a repeat guest from episode 411. She took her last drink on November 16th, 2022. She is 66 and lives outside of Atlanta. She has been married for 37 years and they have two adult children. Lisa enjoys working out, traveling, reading, and listening to podcasts.   Lisa grew up in a close family, but her parents had a miserable marriage. Her mother drank to deal with it and the drinking increased when Lisa was in middle school. Upon trying her first drink in high school, she didn't have the “wow” moment at first but quickly found it gave her confidence and she felt accepted and less insecure with her friends.   After graduating college and entering the booming computer software industry, Lisa found herself drinking at a lot of parties, conferences, and sales meetings. She says her husband didn't drink much. Aside from when she was pregnant, Lisa drank in a way that she considered normal.   In her 40's, Lisa and her husband left the corporate world and started their own business. It was successful but very stressful. She says her drinking ramped up and she was beginning to try and hide the wine bottles from her husband.   After a fall Lisa had during a blackout, her doctor referred her to a counselor. She discovered AA and was able to stay sober for a year without doing the work. Soon after the year mark, Lisa thought she could moderate and started drinking again. She was successful with moderation at first, but after retiring, finding herself as the sole caretaker for her elderly mother, the drinking increased again.   One night Lisa found herself pouring a glass of wine that she really didn't want and it was then she decided enough was enough. This time Lisa decided to get help. She went to AA and didn't feel it was working for her. She discovered a Facebook group called SoberSis as well as Café RE. After her last interview, she was connected with a lot of other ladies that she is still connected with today.   Last year found Lisa tending to several health scares, several surgeries, and the unexpected loss of her parents eight weeks apart. Lisa says that gratitude, using the tools she has learned in the sober community as well as her faith and family has helped her remain sober through it all.   Lisa's favorite ways to relax deep breathing and exercise.   Lisa's advice for somebody struggling with life and alcohol: find a way to connect no matter how uncomfortable it is, we have to have connections.   Café RE – use the code OPPORTUNITY to waive the setup fee.
