Quint's lament. This week we have ten hours of uninterrupted waves from Menemsha (recorded here), with Jaws vibes. I imagined the fictional Amity fishing community coming to grips with the unfortunate events of 51 years ago (and how that would audibly work out as a soundscape). So: mild melancholy and chill thrills. This immersive ambient soundscape provides the perfect background soundtrack. No talking, no interruptions—just pure Menemsha waves, familiar note combinations, and drift. Ignore the world.________I spotted candy corns for sale at my local grocer. I'm calling it—summer is over. I said something to that effect to my wife on a recent trip to the supermarket. Her look was incredulous, with a hint of middle finger. “It's July.”“Sure… late July,” I corrected. “Very late.” (I left unsaid, "Eggnog will be on sale soon.")My wife was wearing her Quint-themed baseball T-shirt we picked up last year while watching the MV Sharks versus the North Shore Navigators. It was the Jaws 50th Anniversary game—the teams had been renamed for the promotion: the Amity Sharks versus the Quint Navigators. And, as with the film, the Quint Navigators went down swinging (they lost).Look—I'm trying to explain how I decided to use my Menemsha beach recording from this year. I had my 3 a.m. waves a few weeks back, but folks didn't seem too jazzed on just waves. So I got the idea in the supermarket pasta aisle to add some Jaws homage to the composition. After all, I have recordings from Quint's base of operations.Menemsha is a real fishing village and looks so convincingly fisherman that all the movie needed to do was aim a camera at it to establish Quint's fisherman bona fides. My wife loves Quint; her "movie character" crush. And I get it, the character is Charles Bronson of the ocean.If the Gorton's Fisherman was Matlock, Quint would be Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (if Ace Ventura had survived a horrific shark attack in the Pacific).PS: I wrote this after a very long day... And this is our second Jaws themed episode. Also the Gorton's Fisherman can go hard AF.

En wat heeft het gruwelijke artwork van Cannibal Corpse te maken met de fijnbesnaarde beelden uit Titanic? Helemaal niets natuurlijk. Toch, stelt cinefiel en filmfestival-organisator Richard Toepoel, zijn er stiekem vele, vele raakvlakken. Zelfrelativerende ironie, ten eerste. De mismatch tussen ambitie en uitvoering, ten tweede. En ten derde, de soms verschrikkelijke muziek die daaruit volgt. Dus daarom, in deze editie van Dood & Verderf, een deep dive in de ziel van Richard Toepoel, die via een handvol weerzinwekkende platen, elk om zijn eigen redenen, wil bewijzen dat wie van bizarre films houdt, ook gepredestineerd is om metalfan te zijn - en vice versa. Track gebruikt sample uit texas chainsaw massacre 2, in mijn optiek een waardeloos vervolg op een perfecte film, namelijk texas chainsaw massacre. Die film is hoofdzakelijk zo afgrijselijk om dat de kwaliteit van het beeldmateriaal ook niet geweldig is. Ik zie parallellen met de black metal productie die, net als in de film, sfeer verhogend is." Goblin – Suspiria (Suspiria, 1977) "Een progressieve rockband uit italie die bekend staat om hun vele werk voor soundtracks, hoofdzakelijk giallo films uit de jaren 70. Fantastische nummer waarbij menig metalband jaloers zou zijn op de sfeer die ze weten op te roepen. Plus ze zijn al bijna aan het grunten voordat er gegrunt werd. is dat een kloppende zin?" Angelo Janotti & Dragon Sound - Against the Ninja (Miami Connection OST, 2020) "Qua muziek schuurt het heel dunnetjes tegen metal aan, I know, maar ik zou al een gehele podcast kunnen vullen over deze film alleen. Een groep beste vrienden, tevens studenten en Taekwondo fanaten, die daarnaast ook nog in een rock band zitten nemen het op tegen een Motorbende die tevens ook ninja's zijn. En dit omschrijft nog maar dunnetjes wat er zich allemaal afspeelt in deze fantastische film. De regisseur is tevens een van de hoofdrolspelers, heeft al zijn spaargeld + leningen +een hypotheek op zijn taekwondo school in deze film gestopt en de film was een complete flop. In 2012 (meer dan 20 jaar nadat hij uitkwam) her-ontdekt door een amerikaanse film distributeur en opnieuw uitgegeven en nu een cult succes." Fulci - Palms by the Cemetery (Tropical Sun, 2019) "Een death metalband die los gaat op italiaanse horror films. De band leent zijn naam van de italiaanse regiseeur Luci Fulci die bekend staat om zijn italiaanse zombie films. Deze track staat op een album die geheel gebaseerd is op de film Zombi (of zombi 2, waarom deel 2? Lang verhaal, leg ik ooit uit)." Christopher Lee & Rhapsody - The Magic of the Wizard's Dream (The Magic of the Wizard's Dream, 2005) "Holy shit, christopher lee had zijn eigen metal band! We weten allemaal dat Jared Leto naast acteur (en wat voor een acteur) ook nog muzikant is (en wat voor een muzikant). Maar Christopher Lee had dus ook gewoon zijn eigen symphonische power metal band. En als je die zin uitspreekt klinkt het fantastisch, maar dat valt van de muziek misschien niet helemaal te zeggen. Je kan het ook weer snel uitdraaien toch? Holy shit, hij heeft met Rhapsody ook muziek gemaakt, en deze clip is een b-film opzich. LOL" Danzig – Mother (Danzig, 1988) "Als acteurs zich voor kunnen doen als metal muzikanten, dan kunnen metal muzikanten zich ook vast wel voor gaan doen als acteurs. Sterker nog, zelfs als regisseurs. In 2019 bracht Glenn Danzig Verotika uit, een abominatie van een film. Gelukkig denkt meneer er zelf heel anders over, beetje god complex... De film heeft uiteraard een soundtrack die ik, in tegenstelling tot zijn film, niet kan labellen met “so bad, it's good”. Huilen en snel weer door." Cannibal Corpse – Hammer Smashed Face (Tomb of the Mutilated, 1992) "Om weer even bij te komen van alle ellende, zelfs in hollywood komen we nog wel eens wat metal tegen met als hoogtepunt Cannibal Corpse in de film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." Amenra - Song to the Siren (Skunk OST, 2024) "Regisseur Koen Mortier maakte in 2007 een voor mij erg indrukwekkende verfilming van het boek Ex-Drummer. Een bijzonder combinatie van humor, absurdisme en zeer kleurrijke personages waarbij elk shot je een ongemakkelijk vies gevoel geeft. Ik was dan ook behoorlijk in mijn nopjes toen ik hoorde dat er een nieuwe film van hem zou verschijnen met de titel Skunk. Dan wordt het nog beter als Amenra de soundtrack van die film verzorgt, en als kers op de taart speelt Colin (de zanger) ook nog een rol in deze film. Een rol die hem net iets te goed past zoals het lijkt, namelijk als een enorme tokkie vader die zijn kind mishandeld / verwaarloosd en zijn vrouw uithoert. De film zelf draait om de zoon uit dit gezin die uit huis geplaatst wordt en terechtkomt in een inrichting. Het is een zeer aangrijpend verhaal over wat trauma met een kind doet. De humor en absurdisme zijn verdwenen en hebben plaatsgemaakt voor complete wanhoop. En wie dan beter om de soundtrack te vertolken dan Amenra. Daarnaast is dit nummer ook een briljante cover van Tim Buckley."

Justin has one free movie pass left before the month ends and needs to use it tonight,  so Doug helps him choose between Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and Masters of the Universe. This somehow turns into a 45-minute deep dive on everything happening in Hollywood right now, and honestly, it's one of the best movie conversations they've had in a while. First: the online hate for Supergirl is examined, dissected, and found to be exactly what everyone already knows it is. Same goes for the discourse around casting in The Odyssey, the Little Mermaid live action, and Dune. The pattern is not subtle and Doug has words. Then things get genuinely interesting. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is coming and Doug is all the way in — Greek mythology, massive ensemble cast (Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliott Page), and the first narrative film ever shot entirely on IMAX cameras. The IMAX conversation goes somewhere unexpected. Spider-Man Brand New Day gets the full breakdown: the Punisher's role, what the One Last Kill special means for his arc, and why having Frank Castle in a PG-13 Spider-Man movie is either brilliant or insane depending on how you look at it. Then: Avengers Doomsday. Are Doug and Justin cautiously optimistic or quietly terrified? Both. RDJ as Doctor Doom, the Jonathan Majors pivot, what the comics actually did with colliding dimensions, and why the Magneto limited series is the template they should be following. Plus, Marvel forgot Shang-Chi exists. It has been four years. Someone needs to answer for this. Also: Jared Leto — what happened? A genuine conversation about acting as a craft, why celebrity corrupts the thing that made people good at it, and how a handcrafted maple dresser at a consignment store connects to all of it somehow. Then: Doug and Justin review Backrooms (A24). Justin gives it three stars. Doug is closer to three and a half. They agree the production design is stunning, the acting is strong, the jump scares land, and the story leaves too many character motivations unresolved. A making-of documentary is urgently needed. Also also: Million Dollar Nannies on Hulu is a show that exists. Beth found it. They did not make it past the intro. And a brief, uncomfortable look at Love Island, reality TV, and why some people unwind by watching train wrecks. Movie audio clip guessing game: Justin goes three for three on Hook, Elvis (Baz Luhrmann), and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective — including a line from Ace Ventura that lands very differently as an adult than it did at age ten. This week's recommendations: Justin — Backrooms (A24). Not perfect, but worth seeing. The environment alone justifies the ticket price. Doug — Mecha Chameleon on Steam. Six dollars.
