In this celebratory and multifaceted episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into an eclectic mix of topics that blend music nostalgia, behind-the-scenes celebrity moments, and the heated debates of wrestling culture.1. Revisiting 1985: The Ultimate Musical ThrowbackThe duo kicks off the episode by reminiscing about the golden year of 1985, as they each reveal their top five favorite songs from that era. The conversation is filled with personal anecdotes and insights as they dissect tracks that defined the decade. Their selections span a broad spectrum of styles—from the pop sensibilities of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Wham's "Careless Whisper", to the rock edge of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and The Smiths' evocative "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". They also shine a light on the artful, quirky stylings of Talking Heads with "And She Was", while nodding to collaborative anthems like Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". Other memorable tracks discussed include Cheap Trick's "Tonight It's You", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rebellious "Don't Come Around Here No More", Robert Palmer's slick "Addicted To Love", and the ever-enduring Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Listeners get an intimate glimpse into why these songs resonate so powerfully with the hosts, reflecting both the cultural impact of 1985 and their own personal histories with the music. Check out their YouTube playlist with all these song choices.2. A Cameo Moment of HonorSwitching gears, Tim the Nerd recounts an exciting behind-the-scenes moment that highlights the podcast's growing influence. With creative savvy and a touch of fandom, Tim explains how he secured a heartfelt Cameo from Aubrey Edwards, the renowned referee from All Elite Wrestling. Celebrating the milestone of reaching 400 episodes, Aubrey Edwards shared some kind words about Friends Talking Nerdy. Tim dives into the process—using the Cameo platform—to connect with a wrestling personality who is not only a fan but also a respected figure in the industry. This segment offers a fun peek into the strategic networking and passion that fuels the podcast's community spirit.3. Wrestling, Ethics, and the Netflix Docuseries “Mr. McMahon”The episode then turns its focus to the world of professional wrestling with an in-depth discussion on the Netflix documentary “Mr. McMahon.” Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dissect the film's portrayal of Vince McMahon's tumultuous career and the various controversies that have shadowed his legacy. The hosts debate the ethical dilemmas wrestling fans face as they reconcile their admiration for the spectacle with the problematic aspects of McMahon's history. Their discussion is both analytical and impassioned, weighing the documentary's revelations against the cultural mythos of wrestling. Listeners are invited to reflect on the complexities of fandom—how one can celebrate the art of wrestling while critically engaging with its darker undercurrents. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. The rise and slide of the Simple Minds - one of the most successful and influential bands in the UK during the 1980s. A mix of new wave, post-punk, and rock. Multiple UK Top 10 hits. But it took "Don't You (Forget About Me)" to break them big in the US. They rode that stand-alone single into one hit album here in the States. When Once Upon a Time was released in 1985 - without "Don't You" on it. "Alive and Kicking" was the lead single - essentially the band's 2nd American single. It went to #3 on the Billboard charts. The album went platinum in the US. Then they fell from those rock and roll heights while continuing to make albums for the next 30 years, just as they had been working years to gain their audience, gigging since the late 1970s. They suffered from a comparison to U2; Both bands from outside the US. Both had a big, expansive, anthemic sound, and both were socially and politically conscious in their lyrics. But there were differences too. We talk about the climb. The slide. The U2 thing. We listen to the music they made early and late in their career. And they are still doing their thing, still big in Europe. What's going on? Hey everyone! Thanks a million to the lovely Greg Halpen for pitching the show and sharing his story this week. You can learn more about Greg at his website or by following him on the Instas. As I said in the intro this week, Greg's story really reminds me of a queer John Hughes movie. In light of that, it might be time to inform you that Smashmouth actually covered Simple Minds' classic Don't You (Forget About Me). You don't really want to hear it. The phrase "Smashmouth covering Simple Minds" should be enough. Oh wait, you're going to do it anyway? Oh well, don't say I didn't warn you.As promised here's the ticket link to my show The List: A Traumady About Probiotic Masculinity at the Montreal Fringe .Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook .And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.
Three Presidents past and present came into town this week and I know the first thing you thought of was "how would this affect Dave Juskow of Juskow in the City?" - and I appreciate that. Well, it was a nightmare, as usual. I thought they all hated New York City (except for Clinton), why do they bother me? Anyhoo, that, our friend Marcie coming to town; the Nickelodeon documentary and that poor Drake Bell and, again, "how does this affect Dave Juskow"; comedian Todd Barry's birthday party and how "Don't You Forget About Me" came to be sung by the band "Simple Minds". All this and more on an all new Juskow in the City. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Personally, I think that one's most cherished tunes come from ... oneself. By which I mean that the music you love may say more about you than about the music itself. You hear a Pretenders single and it calls you instantaneously back to the person you were when you first heard it. "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds has the power to instantly recreate the mood you were in when you first saw The Breakfast Club in the theater. Or maybe it brings to mind and heart the person you were with when you saw it! I seriously ask you, Why do you like the music, and especially the rock 'n roll music, that you still like? Why does a particular song have the power to evoke tears -- like in two seconds? Why? Tell me, please -- I'm deeply interested. And why interested? Because I care about you. I care about your heart. I care about the assimilation of both your negativity -- which often has its origin in long ago experience of pain -- and your positivity -- which can boost you up when other things pull you down. How would you begin this podcast? I mean, with what music would you open it? And conclude it? Incidentally, the Spirit of God spoke to me during the recording of it. You'll notice a change which takes place near the end. So I left it in -- the unexpected change -- because, well, it witnesses. LUV U!

Thousands of people had to evacuate Claudelands Oval in Hamilton on Sunday night after a cluster of lightning strikes got worryingly close to the venue. Headliners, Simple Minds, had just played 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' when a production manager cut their set short with instructions for everyone to leave. The band is set to play again next Saturday, in Queenstown. Greenstone Entertainment general manager Dean Calvert spoke to Corin Dann.
On UAWIL, we regularly talk about albums and bands that are big on one side of the Atlantic but for some reason never have great success on the other side of the pond. One glaring example is Simple Minds who have dozens of hits and many gold & platinum albums in the UK, Europe and around the world but never had huge success in the US. Most US fans know Don't You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club soundtrack as it went to #1 in the US in early 1985. But because that song wasn't on a Simple Minds album until the 90s and because prior to that they received little to no airplay in the US, many fans see them as a one hit wonder and don't realize the extraordinary career Simple Minds have had with over 60 million records sold worldwide. As it turns 40 on February 6, 1984, Sparkle in the Rain was a bit of a transition from the techno pop band of New Gold Dream 81/82/83/84 to a band that were going places. Simple MInds were playing bigger venues, becoming friendly (and competitive) with U2 and wanted to make a bigger sound. They enlisted Steve Lillywhite (after he produced U2's War) to lead them to more radio-friendly, stadium enhancing tunes. In the end, it's a bit of a mixed bag with takes on fame (Up On The Catwalk), war (East at Easter), rebellion (The Kick Inside of Me) and UK chart climbers like Waterfront and Speed Your Love to Me. Vocalist Jim Kerr delivers an amazing performance but sometimes the lyrics are a bit opaque. Charlie Burchill is a brilliant guitarist but you can't always make out what he's doing as Mick MacNeil's keyboards play a prominent role. The addition of Mel Gaynor from London gave them a big boost and the album hit #1 in New Zealand and the UK where it went platinum. But still, the US had limited knowledge of the band until the Breakfast Club hit a year later. So we go track x track to try to understand why the US didn't pick up on this one and if that had something to do with why they never became huge there like they did in Europe. "The Breakfast Club," directed by John Hughes, is a seminal film of the 1980s that has transcended its era to become a timeless classic. This 1985 masterpiece delves into the lives of five high school students who, on the surface, embody the quintessential teenage stereotypes: the Brain (Anthony Michael Hall as Brian), the Athlete (Emilio Estevez as Andrew), the Basket Case (Ally Sheedy as Allison), the Princess (Molly Ringwald as Claire), and the Criminal (Judd Nelson as Bender). These characters, forced to spend a Saturday in detention together, start off as archetypical figures but evolve into complex, multi-dimensional beings as the film progresses. The genius of "The Breakfast Club" lies in its simplicity. The entire movie unfolds in one location – the school library – and focuses on the interactions between the five students. This limited setting could have been a constraint, but Hughes turns it into an advantage, creating a microcosm of high school society. The film opens with a quote from David Bowie, setting the tone for a story that challenges the status quo and speaks to the rebellious spirit in all of us.The characters are introduced in a way that immediately establishes their social roles. Brian is the obedient, academically focused student; Andrew, a wrestler, carries the burden of his father's expectations; Allison lurks in the background, her silence and odd behaviour making her an outcast; Claire is the popular, affluent girl; and Bender, with his flippant attitude and disdain for authority, is the quintessential rebel. As the day progresses, the characters engage in conversations that range from frivolous to deeply personal. They argue, laugh, and eventually open up about their fears, dreams, and frustrations. The film brilliantly uses humour and drama to explore the pressures of adolescence. Each character's story reflects broader societal issues – parental pressure, peer pressure, social expectations, and the struggle to find one's identity. One of the most powerful aspects of "The Breakfast Club" is its portrayal of the common ground shared by these seemingly different individuals. The film suggests that, despite superficial differences, everyone faces similar challenges and insecurities. This realization breaks down the barriers between them, fostering a sense of understanding and camaraderie.Hughes' direction is impeccable. He gives each character enough screen time to develop and shine. The script is sharp, insightful, and, at times, painfully honest. The dialogue never feels forced or contrived, resonating with a sense of authenticity that has made the film a favourite across generations. The performances are exceptional. Judd Nelson's portrayal of Bender is both charismatic and heartbreaking, revealing the vulnerability beneath the tough exterior. Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy deliver nuanced performances, capturing the complexity of their characters' internal struggles. Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall balance the ensemble with their portrayals of Andrew and Brian, adding depth to the athlete and nerd stereotypes. The film's soundtrack, particularly the iconic song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds, perfectly encapsulates the film's themes of identity and remembrance. It's a reminder that the experiences and emotions of these characters are universal, echoing beyond the confines of their detention room."The Breakfast Club" also deserves praise for its exploration of themes like empathy, acceptance, and the challenge of being true to oneself in a world that often demands conformity. It's a poignant reminder that, beneath the facades people present to the world, there's a depth of emotion and complexity. In conclusion, "The Breakfast Club" is not just a movie about teenagers in detention; it's a film about human connection and the universal experience of growing up. Its honest depiction of the highs and lows of adolescence, combined with exceptional writing, directing, and acting, makes it a masterpiece of American cinema. It's a film that speaks to teenagers and adults alike, reminding us all of the importance of looking beyond stereotypes and finding common ground. This movie remains as relevant and impactful today as it was in the 1980s, a true testament to its brilliance and the visionary work of John Hughes. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

“Direction Of The Heart” Whether you're good at math or not, it really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that Simple Minds have sold 60 million records. After all, the Scottish band have been around since 1977 and since then, have put out an uninterrupted string of classics like Empires and Dance, New Gold Dream, Sparkle in the Rain, Once Upon A Time, Street Fighting Years and their most recent effort Direction of the Heart. With 20 albums under their musical belts, plus number one songs like "Don't You Forget About Me" and "Belfast Child,” plus taking home the Ivor Novello Prize, the Q Inspiration Award, a few MTV music video awards, Brit Awards and an American Music Award, it's safe to say that Simple Minds' CV is far too long to be enumerated in full on this podcast. Just trust us on this: Simple Minds are a proper band. And singer Jim Kerr is a proper frontman—a great singer, a man with tremendous presence and a believer in the democracy of a rock and roll band. Their new album Direction Of The Heart is a big blast of sonorous pop that rings out with truth and heart—another winning entry into a classic discography. www.simpleminds.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers The Podcast www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast
