Today we bring you another favourite episode from our Apostrophe team. On the eve of The Truman Show's 27th anniversary, our sound engineer Geoff Devine explains why this timeless film is one of his all time favourites and why Carrey's stand up story stands out for him. Jim Carrey is Ace Ventura. He's the Grinch. He's Bruce Almighty. Need we say more? But in 1989, Carrey was getting routinely crucified on stage, rejected for parts and was nearly starving to death – living in a bachelor apartment with a baby basket on the floor. Then one day, he wrote himself a check for $10M for “acting services rendered” – dated five years in the future.Tell us YOUR rejection story, and you may be featured in an upcoming episode:Record your voice: https://speak-to.us/rejectionWrite to us: hello@apostrophepodcasts.ca Hosted on Acast. Guess who's coming to town this holiday season? No, it's not Santa, it's Jim Carrey's iconic Grinch from the 2000 film, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" We had the pleasure of bantering with Broadway's Andrew Keenan-Bolger, who once donned green fur as JoJo and young Max in the stage rendering of this tale. We strolled down memory lane, reminiscing about our own connections with Carrey as the green grouch, and Andrew spilled the beans about a special screening, and his Grinch stint that surprisingly didn't draw from Carrey's interpretation. Spoiler Alert: The film's marketing blitzkrieg and its ripple effects on all things Grinch were quite a chat fodder. Now who can speak of the Grinch without diving into the nitty-gritty of its making? From Carrey's reluctance to play the Grinch to the Herculean efforts that turned him into the character, we've got the deets for you. We couldn't help gushing about the makeup and visual effects, clearly ahead of their time, but we did pause to discuss whether the film did justice to Dr. Seuss's original masterpiece. Opinions were split, but that's where the fun lies, right? Send us a textSocial media is a force to be reckoned with. When someone does a dirty deed, mobile phone cameras catch it and post it for the world to heckle. As we discussed David's near victimization yesterday (and near loyalty betrayal) we realize how healing it can be to embrace snarkiness. And, as a public service for those who secretly hope to be noticed by famous podcasters, we're posting the name of a despicable person in the title of this episode. Meanwhile, be mindful so the person you enjoy today doesn't steal affection from your true blue friends. Stay tuned to social media in case Dr Dave walks out on Brian Regan tonight.

Today author and ScreenCrush editor Matt Singer returns to discuss one of the oddest detours in a legendary Hollywood career. When THE CABLE GUY came out in 1996, Jim Carrey was on one of the hottest streaks in cinema history; fans just didn't know what to do with a dark comedy/thriller that made him into a full-blown creep. We talk about why it was considered a flop, where it falls in the careers of both Carrey and director Ben Stiller, and if it really IS that weird. You can find more from Matt at https://screencrush.com/Unwatchables is hosted by Marc Dottavio and Seth Troyer, produced by Tony Scarpitti, featuring artwork by Micah Kraus. You can support us on Patreon at patreon.com/unwatchables to get access to exclusive bonus content and weigh in on what we watch next.Find us online at www.unwatchablespod.com or shoot us an email at unwatchablespodcast@gmail.com.
