Today we have the pleasure of chatting with Tracey Garvis Graves, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and international bestselling author of contemporary fiction, to discuss her new novel, Heard It In A Love Song. Tracy begins by telling us about how she wrote the book she wanted to read about how to start over again after a divorce. ** Layla, the novel's complicated protagonist, finds herself on the other side of a divorce and wondering who she is now and how she can rediscover those parts of herself she has lost. Tracey discusses her development of Layla and how she wanted to explore how women often put certain parts of themselves or their lives aside. (02:48) ** Music is key in this novel. We were super impressed with the songs Tracey wrote for her fictional band, which has major Daisy Jones & The Six vibes. The title of this novel is Heard It In A Love Song, so we loved hearing how strong Tracey's connection is to music and lyrics. Listen to hear us geek out together about Taylor Swift! (08:13). ** We talk with Tracey about her use of dual-timelines to show the painful details of the end of the characters' prior relationships. (16:00) ** Heard It In A Love Song is a friends-to-lovers story that reads like a warm, slow burn. Tracey shares with us how the pandemic contributed to her choice to explore this type of romance, as well as her thoughts on happy endings (for now). (20:45) ** Tracey tells us about her writing process, from outline to zero draft to first draft and beyond. Find out which of her books was the hardest to write. Her advice is to wait for the strong idea to start talking loudly.  (26:23) ** Tracey shares how she finally decided to write her first novel at age 42 because she wanted something for herself. (31:45) ** We finally found someone potentially more obsessed with astrology than we are! A+ for Tracey! (36:07) ** Tracey shares what she's loving right now, which includes “happy things” and TikTok! (42:28) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. Emily Itami is a debut novelist who uses her expertise as a travel writer to transport her readers to Tokyo in “Fault Lines.” The book focuses on Mizuki, a wealthy and beautiful Tokyo wife and mother, who is profoundly bored. Her witty internal dialogue reveals there are cracks beneath the shiny surface which, like the fault lines running through the city, threaten to damage or destroy.  Emily joined the podcast from London to reflect on her experience living in Tokyo, the expectations women face, and how motherhood changes everything. Margaret discusses a recent novel she enjoyed, “Heard It In a Love Song” by Tracey Garvis Graves.

Our audiobook tease this week is The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves! New York Times bestselling author of On the Island, Tracey Garvis Graves, presents the compelling, hopelessly romantic novel of unconditional love. Annika Rose is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people's behavior confusing, she'd rather be surrounded by the order and discipline of books or the quiet solitude of playing chess. Jonathan Hoffman joined the chess club and lost his first game—and his heart—to the shy and awkward, yet brilliant and beautiful Annika. He admires her ability to be true to herself, quirks and all, and accepts the challenges involved in pursuing a relationship with her. Jonathan and Annika bring out the best in each other, finding the confidence and courage within themselves to plan a future together. What follows is a tumultuous yet tender love affair that withstands everything except the unforeseen tragedy that forces them apart, shattering their connection and leaving them to navigate their lives alone. Now, a decade later, fate reunites Annika and Jonathan in Chicago. She's living the life she wanted as a librarian. He's a Wall Street whiz, recovering from a divorce and seeking a fresh start. The attraction and strong feelings they once shared are instantly rekindled, but until they confront the fears and anxieties that drove them apart, their second chance will end before it truly begins. In this episode, Vee rationalises that she's reading a spooky Halloween book because all fantasy, if you think about it, is an exploration of the Other. Right? And what is Halloween but a showcase of those things that we avoid and reject and therefore become afraid of? Am I convincing anyone? Probably not. A Dreamer's Tales by Lord Dunsany (Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany) is a unique exploration of both that otherworldly fantasy that lifts you out of the familiar and yet, at the same time, the fantasy that lives in the mundane. But it's also over a century old, so don't expect anything modern.Jess reads The Girl He Used To Know by Tracey Garvis Graves, a romance about a neurodivergent protagonist (gasp!) that takes place over two decades. Does this fit the Halloween vibe? Sure.... since it... explores the perspective of someone outside of what society considers typical, and thus someone who's likely to be othered and treated like a ghost! Bam, October read, right there. And for anyone interested, here's the essay about how Twilight is, and always will be, a disastrous series: https://archiveofourown.org/works/721993/chapters/1339216

I’m Jim McKeown , welcome to Likely Stories, a weekly review of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and biographies. On occasion, I like to dip into some unusual novels referred to as “Chick Lit.” This popular genre seems to be everywhere I see readers. Tracey Garvis Graves has written eight novels. The Girl He Used to Know is her ninth. Aside from an occasional romp in the bedroom of a pair of students, I found the story amusing with a truly gripping twist.

Central Iowa author Tracey Garvis Graves joins the podcast for today's episode. Graves new book, The Girl He Used to Know, hits library shelves and bookstores everywhere on April 2. Graves is best well-known for her debut novel, On the Island. She initially self-published that book, and it eventually became a New York Times bestseller. Graves talks about the amazing journey On the Island took, one that landed her a full-time book deal. "I couldn't really wrap my brain around it," Graves says of the fact that she shared a bestsellers list on Amazon with books in The Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey series. Her new book, The Girl He Used to Know, prominently features a character on the autism spectrum. Graves says she did a lot of work to make sure she was authentic in her dialogue and the actions of that character, Annika. "I read up to six nonfiction books about Asperger’s and being on the spectrum," she says. "Then I read a lot of blog posts and internet articles about what the spouses of people who are on the spectrum" love about their significant others and enjoy about their relationships.
