Ok, dream guest alert- Jill Santopolo graced us with her presence on the pod this week. I was SO thrilled to chat with her as I just lived in the Santopolo-verse for the last two weeks. I was lucky enough to listen to The Light We Lost and the sequel, The Love We Found (back to back!!)- out now- and I miss that world already. Jill was such a delight. She talked about being a Reese's Book Club Pick, the inspo for the sequel (thanks to her sister!), celeb inspo, life, silver linings and her secret recipe for her emotionally charged and heart-filled books. I absolutely loved chatting with her! She would one hundred percent be my "if you could have coffee or a cocktail with" author! IYKYK. :)

Jill Santopolo is an international best-selling author who writes sweeping love stories about decisions, regrets, second chances and how families influence the choices we make. Hello there, Jill, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Jill Santopolo: Thank you. Thank you for having me. Jenny Wheeler: Now you are in New York and I'm a New Zealand, so it's really fun to be able to make these connections. You've got the most amazing range of roles on your CV, which we probably will get into a little bit later on, but the real reason we are here today is to talk about your latest book Stars in an Italian Sky. It's your fourth novel and it's a sweeping dual timeline romance that starts in Genoa in World War II and then moves quite quickly to New York in the 2020 ones. Is this the first one where you've had a truly historical aspect to your work? Jill Santopolo: Yes, I think so. My first book, The Light We Lost, starts in 2001. By some definitions now people are calling that historical, which is crazy to me. But this is the first one that feels truly - it's set in 1946 - It's post-war, it feels truly historical to me in a different sense. Jenny Wheeler: Yes, that's right. All of your books are about heart searching decisions, about where to go in life, missed opportunities, and how families influence our choices. And I wondered what particularly appeals to you about this territory. Love in all forms, not just romantic Jill Santopolo: I feel like love in all its forms is what connects people.

It absolutely charmed me.”—Reese Witherspoon (A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick) “The perfect book to get lost in . . . Josie Silver's characters sneak their way into your heart and stay.”—Jill Santopolo, author of The Light We Lost Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story. Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away. Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be. What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, we start by discussing what we are drawn to in romcoms, ones we’ve covered and ones we haven’t yet! Let’s unpack depictions of LOVE in pop fiction... ** Express Yourself. No matter how they get there, the truly memorable moments are when someone finally says the words. Words matter to writers like us so when it’s done right, the declaration of love is everything! We discuss the “big speeches” from Dirty Dancing, Runaway Bride, The Notebook, Forces of Nature, Notting Hill, Say Anything, and Bridgerton. (04:07) ** What’s Your Theme, Heather? A play on our regular episode segment, What's Your Damage, Heather? We discuss the particular themes in love stories that we are drawn to, and might reveal a little something to say about our own journeys and points of vulnerability, what really gets us and why.  * For Carinn, it’s the theme of the thin line between love and hate. She believes that both emotions are loaded in relationships where you feel so much. She discusses Simon’s speech to the Queen in Bridgerton and When Harry Met Sally. In the novel Beautiful Disaster by Jamie Maguire, we see how to hurt people can heal each other, even if the one they love triggers old pain. Real love makes you both stronger and weaker. She ends reading passages from Gone Girl where Nick describes Amy as his “forever antagonist.” Kate jumps on this theme too, somehow mentioning two of her childhood favorites, Anne of Green Gables and Pride and Prejudice! (25:15) * For Kate, it’s the theme of “the one that got away.” She discusses the variations of this theme in Bethany Chase’s novel, The One That Got Away, Emily Giffin’s Love The One You’re With, and Jill Santopolo’s, All The Light We Lost, then moves on to the movies, The Notebook, Sweet Home Alabama, and Always Be My Maybe. What Kate loves is how the one that got away can act as a mirror to remind the protagonist of who she really is. Carinn then declares the one that got away is really HER! Mind blown. (47:40) ** Straight To The Source. We aren't the only ones fascinated by love and relationships. Many of the authors we interviewed chatted with us about the topic. We’re going straight to the source and sharing one of our favorite clips from our complicated conversations with New York Times bestseller author, Emily Giffin. (63:03) ** What is Love, Anyway? We play a clip from one of our favorite episodes, Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, where we grapple with this big question! (68:01).  ** We end with words of wisdom found in a NYT essay from Roxanne Gay and discuss why a Valentine’s episode was non-negotiable this year (76:48). Then, one day, Jonathan joins the chess club and is immediately captivated by the mysterious girl whose attention is completely fixed on her game. Despite challenges, the two fall in love. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Light We Lost comes a tender and moving new novel about a woman at a crossroads after the death of her father, and caught between the love of two men. Nina has always known who she's supposed to be. But is that who she truly is? Nina Gregory has always been a good daughter. Raised by her father, owner of New York City's glamorous Gregory Hotels, Nina was taught that family, reputation, and legacy are what matter most. And Tim--her devoted boyfriend and best friend since childhood--feels the same. But when Nina's father dies, he leaves behind a secret that shocks Nina to her core. As her world falls apart, Nina begins to see the men in her life--her father, her boyfriend, and unexpectedly, her boss, Rafael--in a new light. Soon Nina finds herself caught between the world she loves, and a passion that could upend everything. More Than Words is a heartbreaking and romantic novel about grief, loss, love, and self-discovery, and how we choose which life we are meant to live. Come meet Jill in Los Angeles! JILL SANTOPOLO New York Times bestselling author of THE LIGHT WE LOSTand Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick "This love story between Lucy & Gabe spans decades and continents as two star-crossed lovers try to return to each other...Will they ever meet again? This book kept me up at night, turning the pages to find out, and the ending did not disappoint."--Reese Witherspoon A four-time SkimmReads pick, September 2017 Belletrist Book of the Month, and the February 2018 Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine pick, THE LIGHT WE LOST by Jill Santopolo is an essential addition to your beach bag. Called “The epic love story” by Redbook and “heart-wrenching yet beautiful” by Us Weekly, THE LIGHT WE LOST is an immersive, heartrending novel about the inner workings of the human heart, the lengths we go to pursue our dreams and the sacrifices we make for love. With shades of the tragic choice in Me Before You, the fated scope of One Day, and the immutability of The Time Traveler’s Wife, THE LIGHT WE LOST explores the dreams, desires, jealousies and betrayals that can accompany passion, especially when the stars align against an indelible, if fragile, love. With foreign rights sold in over thirty countries, it has struck a chord both at home and abroad—proving that love is universal, as is its consequences. “This book will sink its hooks into your heart on page one,” says Bustle, “and leave you scarred long after you’re done.” About THE LIGHT WE LOST On a day that irreversibly alters both of their lives, Columbia University students Lucy and Gabe come together amidst tragedy, fueled by a deep connection found in a dark moment. What follows, over the course of more than a decade in a series of beautifully written vignettes, is a journey that brings them together and apart as they to etch out their respective careers and come to terms with the concrete consequences of following their dreams. Gabe, inspired and compelled to travel to the Middle East as a war zone photojournalist, leaves Lucy in New York, where she forges a successful career—and, eventually, a life without the person she thought was her soulmate. She gives her heart to someone new, a steady, safe, and loving man named Darren. But as time goes on, Lucy realizes that she can never give her heart away again fully as she continues to cling to the impossibly perfect love she believes she was meant to share with Gabe. As Lucy tells the story of her life, she addresses Gabe directly, sharing memories and secrets that result in an unraveling destiny and surprising, unforgettable conclusion. Jill will address the following: · This story is so moving and so honest. What inspired you to write it? · Before The Light We Lost, you’d written primarily for children and young adults. Why did you decide to write an adult novel? · What was different about writing for an adult audience? Did your process change? · Lucy’s voice is so powerful and sincere on the page. What was it like to write her character? How much of you is in her voice? · How did you come up with Gabe and Darren? Did the men change as you developed the story? · So which are you: Team Darren or Team Gabe? · You yourself were a student at Columbia University on September 11, 2001. What was it like writing about this experience through fiction? Were your own experiences similar? · Without giving anything away, did you always know how the novel would end? · You also work as an editor of children’s books. What is different about writing your own stories from editing others’? Is there one side you prefer? www.jillsantopolo.com Twitter: @JillSantopolo Facebook: @JillSantopoloAuthor ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jill Santopolo received a BA in English literature from Columbia University and an MFA in writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She's the author of three successful children’s and young-adult series and works as the editorial director of Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers group, where she's edited books by Mayim Bialik, Chelsea Clinton, Amy Ephron, and Lisa Graff, among others.
