This week, we're looking to understand how Taylor Swift uses animals in her lyrics, through the lens of animal studies! Jenn takes us back to medieval times to help us understand the origins of the white horse and what that means for “White Horse” (Fearless, 2008). Then Jodi talks to us about the many connotations associated with foxes and vultures, which are referenced in “I know places,” (1989, 2014). This is the first of a two part series about adultery.  My co-host for both is Dr. Larissa 'Kat' Tracy. Last month Kat and I talked about my favorite medieval romance, Chretien de Troyes' late twelfth-century French poem "Yvain: The Knight with the Lion."  Unlike the more famous medieval romances of Lancelot and Guinevere and Tristan and Isolde,  "Yvain" celebrated marital love. That led me to ask Kat about attitudes toward adultery in medieval literature. In this episode we focus on the evolution of the Lancelot and Guinevere story, and how it relates to societal and clerical attitudes toward adultery. The second part will be about Tristan and Isolde, and how medieval adultery has been dealt with in movies.Listen on Podurama https://podurama.com Intro and exit music are by Alexander NakaradaIf you have questions, feel free to contact me at richard.abels54@gmail.com

Et c'est l'heure H de mon histoire. ew leadership is needed in America, says Spencer Chretien, associate director of the 2025 Presidential Transition Project, also known as Project 2025."We see every day the effects of the current administration, whether it's the open southern border, rampant inflation, a woke and weaponized government, foreign policy disaster," he says. "And we need new leadership in this country.""And so, while that is true, it's also important that we get ready for what happens after Jan. 20, 2025, when the new president takes office," Chretien says, adding:So, Project 2025 is now more than 70 conservative organizations. It's organized here at Heritage, but it includes really a 'who's who' of the conservative movement. We have groups involved that are more establishment-friendly, more populist-friendly, more libertarian, social conservative.Chretien joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss how presidential candidates have been responding to the project, what the administrative state is and what dismantling it would look like, and his response to criticism of the project.Enjoy the show! For decades, the regressive left has gained control over America's institutions, leaving conservatives outgunned and outmatched in the art of government. We now face a formidable D.C. dragon: a bloated bureaucracy 20 million strong, led largely by the left. Now, as all eyes are focused on the race 2024...what happens in 2025? Is there a plan in place, no matter who wins, for a pro-liberty, pro-America, Constitutional future? Spencer Chretien serves as Associate Director of Heritage's 2025 Presidential Transition Project, supporting each pillar of the project's work. From 2020-2021, Chretien was a Special Assistant to President Donald J. Trump and Associate Director of Presidential Personnel, helping to identify, recruit, and place hundreds of political appointees at all levels of government.More about Project 2025: https://www.heritage.org/conservatism/commentary/project-2025

Maggie Chretien, also known as 'The Peninsula Mumma' on Instagram is an actress, writer, presenter, podcast host, and the biggest job of all... a mum of two! Maggie is incredibly open about her motherhood journey, her experience with prolapse, mental health, confidence and a bunch of other things, but in today's KICBUMP episode we wanted to focus particularly on her experience with sleep training her children, which came with an absurd amount of backlash from people when she opened up about it online. Sleep training may not be for every parent and that is totally okay, but in today's episode we discuss what options there are, what worked for Steph and what worked for Maggie, how to block out the noise of everyone else's unhelpful opinions and much more. We're back for our first episode of the summer! In this one, we take a trip to post-Rome Britain to explore our fascination with a time period that is more myth than history. Going full history nerd, we take a look at three books set in Britain after the withdrawal of Roman imperial powers: Dark Earth by Rebecca Stott, Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve, and Sistersong by Lucy Holland. We discuss the possible origin of the King Arthur myth, queer medieval narratives, and the cultural diversity of Britain at this time–as well as wizards, warlords, and murder ballads.    Other Media Mentioned: Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Little Blue Encyclopedia for Vivian by Hazel Jane Plante The Thousand Eyes by A.K. Larkwood Bernard Cornwell's books Spear by Nicola Griffith Perceval by Chretien de Troyes The Two Sisters by Steeleye Span On the Ruin and Conquest of Britain by Gildas History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth   Content Warnings: Discussions of war, death, and body horror   Also 1) apologies for the distant car horn in a few moments and 2) our discussion of Here Lies Arthur involves talking about some characters who present as different genders over the course of the story and so has some varying pronoun usage.

Guest: Dr. Katie Chretien, PCA Plano Lower School Principal PCA has undergone an intensive examination of the books and resources that our students have access to especially in the Lower School library. Resources must be age appropriate in their language, imagery, and ideas communicated to our students. Dr. Chretien shares about the work being done at the Lower School library at the Plano campus, but this audit is ongoing at the Middle School, Upper School, and North Campus libraries as well. PCA Lower School has moved from Scholastic Books to I:55 Book Fairs, Where Faith Matters. From I:55's website: Our vision at I55 Book Fairs is to partner with Christian schools, churches, and organizations in proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ. We are passionate about raising up a generation of inspired readers. Our name comes from Isaiah 55. This chapter encompasses all we strive to do, knowing that nothing is impossible with God. The audit of the books and resources that students have access to in the library should also encourage you as a parent to do a similar audit of what information has access to your children at home through TV, movies, and social media. Parents, help us continue to be vigilant - if you run across something in a book that you think we need to be aware of, please contact either Dr. Chretien at kchretien@prestonwoodchristian.org or Dan Panetti at dpanetti@prestonwoodchristian.org

This week we are joined by ancient historian, musician, lecturer and best-selling author, David Rohl.   This is a deep dive into a mystery that has fired the imagination of scholars, artists and theologians for centuries: The Holy Grail. Foundational to this quest is the historicity of Jesus himself. Was he an historical figure? How do we separate myth from reality? What was The Grail? A chalice, platter, royal bloodline? How do the medieval grail romances from Chretien de Troyes, Wolfram Von Eschenbach or Thomas Malory aid us in our quest? Does The Grail represent the sacred bloodline of Jesus and if the Sangreal or Royal Blood truly represents a lineage of Jesus's progeny, could an ancestor of the most influential person in human history be walking among us today! Let's find out!   You can find David's books at his Amazon Author page here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/David-M-Rohl/e/B00JI0Q2XC/ref=aufs_dp_fta_dsk After our chat with David we covered the usual housekeeping and looked at some current events…   Producer Credits for Ep 239:  Producers -  Kella Anna, Steve, Lee, Helen, Nick, Slicko and Bunyanut    Message us here....follow, like, subscribe and share.
