In this episode, we consider books that we'd recommend to students as great choices to read independently. As the world around us has drastically changed and continues changing, we decided on this topic and talked about some of our favorites, including R. J. Palacio's Wonder, Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before series, Nicola Yoon's books, and anything by Jason Reynolds, as well as some other favorites. We focus our discussion on books we think students can access without teacher support and on books that are not extremely heavy but leave the reader with a sense of hope. (We shared our long list on our Bookish Faves post this past Monday.) Be sure to let us know ones you'd recommend on the comments here or on our Instagram posts. Our Recommendations R. J. Palacio’s Wonder Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (Ep 90) Jason Reynolds’s Track series or When I Was the Greatest (or any of his other works) (Ep 34) John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything and The Sun Is Also a Star (Ep 75 - book-to-film adaptation) Victoria Jamieson’s Roller Girl Cece Bell’s El Deafo Raina Telgemeier’s Drama and Guts Julie Murphy's Dumplin’ (Ep 63 about the book & Ep 64 about the adaptation) David Yoon’s Frankly in Love Other Mentions Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman’s Dry R. PATRON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by my patron supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! Out of the last few discussion episodes we’ve had here on Cinematic Doctrine, I must say going through this episode was a real treat. Prepping for this episode was a little difficult as the few discussion points we approached with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before seemed as though they wouldn’t spark any worthwhile or meaty discussions. Now, I say that, and that’s after we did a discussion episode on Sonic the Hedgehog, so maybe I’m just being a little ridiculous! Even so, we walked away from this episode discussion the clever creativity present within To All the Boys I've Loved Before, our high school experience and what makes high-school romantic-comedies relatable despite their hyperbole, and most interestingly, our thoughts on dating as Christians. This led to what might be my favorite discussion on the podcast so far, as it heads into the importance of learning to express oneself romantically while remaining biblically appropriate, discussing the importance of building a foundation for relationships to encourage healthy decision making, and how these thoughts and opinions on dating are largely counter-culture to the modern American-Christian lifestyle that kissed dating goodbye. All in all, my worries were pointless, and this episode turned out some extremely interesting and thought-provoking content. Tune in weekly for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is Rated TV-14. It doesn’t have a detailed certificate, so here’s a Melvin certificate: mild sexual references and language. It features Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Anna Cathcart, Madeleine Arthur, Israel Broussard, John Corbett, Janel Parrish, and Emilija Baranac. Directed by Susan Johnson. Oh wow, Christian Bale. In a vest. Eating pudding. Yes, today we're talking about 1994's Little Women, written by Robin Swicord and directed by Gillian Armstrong! We begin with some direct comparisons to Greta's 2019 version before diving right in to all things Winona Ryder and the rest of this truly excellent cast. Of course, it wouldn't be an episode of Radaptations without a jaunt into thirst-town, and today we have our sights set on Literal Hot Dad Gabriel Byrne (he carries oranges in his pocket and enjoys the opera, ok?!). Stay tuned for our episode on To All the Boys I've Loved Before, dropping in April!
