To start this tour of Victorian culture [1837-1901], we begin with a crafting fad, ornate floral wreaths made of human hair. From there we touch on mourning etiquette; the comical paraphernalia of secret society initiations; The Aesthetic Movement; showing off with a pineapple; & the accessories of women's fashion as eccentric as live insects. Switching to the personal, the ladies share a handful of haunting anecdotes; one about researching a man's calling card found in a bin of 1920's clothing; another about unwittingly removing a "witch bottle" from an abandoned farm house. We end on further memories of urban exploration. David is a stalwart of the shanty scene in the North East US, moving there from London in 1965 and becoming deeply involved with the NYC folk music scene. He sings solo and with many acts including The Starboard List, The Bermuda Quadrangle, Poor Old Horse, and The New York Packet.Jos. is the founder and president of the Connecticut Sea Music Festival. He's also a social historian and performs with groups such as The Jovial Crew. Stang stay up all night at his age editing new Show, when the old ones from twenty years ago are MORE MODERN AND NEW? Moreover, at rural Stang Ranch, the Sacred Scribe has had to deal with one crisis per week, such as wildfires, goat sized hail, and sonic tornadoes. This episode is heavy on the ESO Swamp Radio from WCSB Cleveland (during the Iraq war) but is also rife with insane collage work by LeMur and others, plus some real surprises such as "Bob" songs by NoMeansNo and Mick Jagger, and startlingly timely clips from ancient anti-fascist propaganda cartoons! Incidentally, the CD copies of this show are inexplicably about a minute and a half longer than the digital file copies. If anyone can explain that, please do!(Radio safe.)
Psalm 76 is a jubilant war song of triumph achieved. Again, written by the sons of Asaph, this psalm naturally flows from the miserable conditions noted in Psalm 74. Having expressed their misery in Psalm 74, they rejoiced in Psalm 75 noting that despite calamity, the righteous will triumph. Here in Psalm 76, the focus is on the God of power who causes the righteous to be triumphant.

PODCAST # 33 Speaking with the Chinese Theme: interior conversation. Friedrich Rückert completes in 1833 his 325 “adaptations” of the poems in the earliest collection of Chinese verse that we have, an anonymous work composed by pre-Confucian poets from the 11 th to the 7 th centuries BCE. Rückert, though he learned 44 languages, didn't know any more Chinese than I do. But he did have the recently discovered Latin prose translation published by Lacharme, a Jesuit priest, in 1733. I call my recital of English translations of Rückert “Speaking with the Chinese” because the poems Rückert offers feel to me like interior conversations with the Chinese fictive speakers. The poets, who lived centuries ago and are alive today through their poems, speak – or more precisely, sing – their poetic wordsongs to the German listener, and to each of these memorable people of Ancient China he “replies” by turning their prose utterances into German poems, in melodious rhythmic forms he invents to fit the feelings they convey to him.
