Renee Dua, MD, is a nephrologist and internist. She helmed her own private practice in Los Angeles and served as chief of medicine at Valley Presbyterian and Simi Valley Hospitals. But after years in the healthcare industry, and one particularly frustrating visit to the ER on the patient’s side of things, Dua had a lightbulb moment. In creating a new kind of healthcare system based around house calls and telehealth, she could cut down on patient wait times and create accessibility for those for whom getting to a doctor’s office or hospital is less than convenient. Now, as the CMO (chief medical officer) of Heal, Dua is doing just that. On this episode of Second Life, hear how she made the switch from working in the traditional healthcare system to creating her own system.

Rev. Jenny Warner preached on "The Book of Justice" on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020 at Valley Presbyterian, inviting us to not accept "business as usual," and to refuse the inevitability of our times. In Jenny's words: We looked at the Bible "as a book of justice. Cornel West said: “Justice is what love looks like in public.” And the general message of the Bible agrees with him. There is little room for a private and individual faith in Scripture. Instead, our faith should lift up the lowest and seek to balance the scales economically and sociologically. This is how we make real Jesus’ words that we are the light of the world. " www.valleypreschurch.org

On Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, Valley Presbyterian Church celebrated the commissioning of Rev. Karen Thistlethwaite as our Executive Pastor. Rev. Dr. Graham Baird, the lead pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame (https://burlpres.org/staff/), led the service of commissioning at Valley Presbyterian and provided our sermon ("The Commission and the Mission"). What is an Executive Pastor, you may ask? The closest parallel in the business world is a Chief Operations Officer. Executive pastors function as the organizational heart of a church, making sure we are stewarding our resources of people, finances and facilities in the service of our mission. www.valleypreschurch.org

September 8, 2019 was BaseCamp Sunday, a big day for Valley Presbyterian. Pastor Jenny Warner kicked of our new fall sermon series "Gather Around" by exploring our first core value at VPC: Slowing down, we ask questions and experience the mystery of faith. Through examples from her own recent week, Jenny reminded us to take a moment to slow down when we're caught up in the flurry of life's busy-ness, and set our hearts on a higher order. To be our best in the world requires rest, and if we can stay plugged in to God's love instead of distraught freneticism, we can experience faith as a mystery instead of as a problem to be solved on a check list.

On Aug. 18, 2019, Pastor Jenny Warner preached on "Releasing What Binds Us" at Valley Presbyterian. She started by summarizing an Irish short story, "The First Confession" by Frank O'Connor. As she continued, she demonstrated that only through confessing do we let down our guard and open ourselves fully to truth telling. When we "live in confession" and openly tell our truth, we discover the joy of being loved by God, just as we are, and we are able to move forward, rather than being blocked in a damaging, defensive posture. We must confess the truth, otherwise we get "stuck" in denial. www.valleypreschurch.org

Sometimes art can help our friends and family understand our lives when we cannot. We're all too close to our own situations to adequately explain them. I'm gradually working my way through a list of stroke related movies. It's not always easy to watch them, but they are often rewarding. This week, I talk about 2 of them. My Beautiful Broken Brain This film chronicle the life of film producer Lotje Sodderland in the year after her stroke. We see her struggle with language, improve, decline, and generally come to terms with her new way of seeing and communicating with the world.     The Diving Bell and the Butterfly This film is "based on a true story." It's based on a book written by Jean-Dominique Bauby, the former editor of Elle magazine in Paris, and it's his memoir. Bauby suffered a stroke while at the peak of his professional life. When he woke from a coma, he had Locked-In Syndrome. He had all his cognitive abilities but he couldn't speak and he couldn't move. He couldn't communicate with the world outside his body. Eventually, he was able to communicate by blinking his left eye. And that's how he dictated his book.     #JusticeForJoe A few weeks ago, I spoke with Joe Borges from The NeuroNerds on this show. You can hear that episode here. Recently, Joe shared the story of his care at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, CA. Basically, when he was a patient, they lost him. The administered significant narcotics to a brain injury/brain surgery survivor and ignored him. Completely not in his right mind, Joe got up in the middle of the night, got dressed -- sort of -- wandered by the empty nurses station, and eventually encountered a security guard who ignored Joe's fall-risk bracelets, obvious head wound, and told him to leave. Joe wandered the streets of Van Nuys in the middle of the night for hours with no memory of what he did or what happened to him. Eventually, his sister found him. Joe has significant post traumatic stress from the incident and the hospital is convinced they did nothing wrong. Check out the full story here or just play the episode below. And let Valley Presbyterian know your thoughts. (Twitter: http://twitter.com/VPHCares)     Hack of the Week Hemiparesis can make it hard to shake hands. The cane is in my right, and there not a whole lot I can so with the left one yet. The fist bump is a great alternative. I find I can do a right-handed fist bump while holding my cane. I can do a left handed one if I concentrate. It's a nice, simple way to engage in social protocol despite my disabilities. Where do we go from here? Watch "My Beautiful Broken Brain" and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." Summary This is a very personal episode for our host Joe Borges. For the first time, he is sharing the full story behind a traumatic incident that occurred while he was in rehab after his stroke at Valley Presbyterian Hospital on August 26, 2016. This incident has caused a lot of emotional damage and distress including PTSD for Joe so it is extremely difficult to share, but Joe wanted to shed light on hospital negligence and find some closure. Valley Pres committed extreme negligence in not having proper supervision and sending a stroke patient, Joe, out of their hospital onto the streets of Van Nuys in the middle of the night. Joe tells the story along with the help of his girlfriend, caregiver and co-producer, Felice. Please help us fight back by joining us in telling Valley Pres to admit their wrong doing and demand justice for Joe. Contact details in our show notes. As an early innovator in functional taping, he developed a hybrid kinesiology technique known as SPRT (Specific Proprioceptive Response Taping). Used on everyone from Olympians to NFL players, the technique quickly became a staple in the athletic world as it allowed injured athletes to compete despite their injuries.   Dr. Brown’s instinctive techniques got athletes asking for taping remedies so often, that he needed something that could do the job when he wasn’t there. Many late nights of trial and error using remnants of old wetsuits and rash guards, he devised a wearable technology that mimicked his taping technique. Dr. Brown’s goal was to take what he had learned in designing and come up with a comfortable, Smart Compression shirt that would clinically improve posture and spinal alignment for everyone, whether you’re an elite athlete or a weekend warrior. Dr. Brown’s ultimate goal is to help everybody to look better, feel better and perform better. He continues to pursue that goal every day.   Dr. Daniel Chao, Co-Founder, Halo Neuroscience   Daniel Chao is a neurotech entrepreneur, specializing in devices that improve brain performance. Currently, Dan is co-founder and CEO of Halo Neuroscience, a venture-backed human performance company based in San Francisco. The company's first product, Halo Sport, is the world's first neurostimulation system built specifically for athletes.   Prior to Halo, Dan was the head of business development at NeuroPace, where he helped raise $250M in capital to develop the world's first closed-loop neuromodulation device, winning FDA approval for the treatment of epilepsy in a unanimous 13-0 vote. Before NeuroPace, Dan was a consultant at McKinsey & Company in the New York office, and he received his M.D. and M.S. in neuroscience from Stanford University.   Renee Dua, Co-Founder, Heal   Dr. Renee Dua is Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Heal – an LA-based start-up providing on-demand house call medicine. Dr. Dua is a Board certified nephrologist and internal medicine doctor who has served as Chief of Medicine at Valley Presbyterian and Simi Valley Hospital. After building a thriving private practice and also teaching medicine at UCLA, Dr. Dua embarked on her greatest adventure, being mom to her first child, a now 15-month old little boy.   It was her son that led her to create Heal, because she knew moms and dads everywhere needed an easier way to see a doctor. As a mom-doctor doing her first start-up, Dr. Dua often jokes she’s a doctor-mom-preneur. Dr. Dua resides in the Pacific Palisades with her husband and son.   GET MORE WELLNESS IN YOUR LIFE Join the WFR Community on facebook Send Josh Trent a personal message Tweet me on Twitter: Send us a fun tweet (or a what's up) Comment on the Facebook page Sign up to get an email alert whenever we release a new episode SUPPORT THIS PODCAST Leave a 5 star review on iTunes Share this episode with someone you care about Contact Wellness Force Radio for podcast sponsorship and partnership opportunities RATE & REVIEW WELLNESS FORCE Aloha!
