It was never Independence Day to me. Always 4th of July. Watching fireworks on the street in front of Burlingame house as a kid. That great trip every year to the Red Devil fireworks stand. Fuzzy memories of seeing fireworks in Guerneville. 9 years old in Kearns Utah. Only allowed sparklers and caps. We used a hammer to blow up caps, often a whole role at a time. Learning about illegal fireworks at around 11 years old. Here stories about people blowing up toilets with M-80s. The Bicentennial quarters. About 12-13 years old we knew a guy who knew a guy and we would get some firecrackers and bottle rockets. Around 16 years old make the trip to China Town and buy fireworks. Do a deal in a back alley. Big fireworks show at La Jolla Cove freshman year at UCSD. Big fireworks show a much bigger thing here in San Diego than I remember in Burlingame. Fireworks from Kate Sessions Park with synchronized music Shooting bottle rockets from UCSD A-2 into B-16. Must have been left over from the summer. With the kids, always attending a softball or baseball tournament somewhere. Watching fireworks from our home in North Poway. Little by little they would not get high enough over the hill to see them. Driving to Flaming Gorge WY and seeing the fireworks store right when we passed the state line. Then having leftovers back in Poway. I took them to the hazardous materials dump site. I always wondered if the workers there actually kept them. Then as I became more politically aware and learned more about the true meaning of America's founding, I really started to focus on the Declaration of Independence as a radical, innovative, groundbreaking idea. That we all have rights that precede the govt. And the govt's role is to secure those rights. California Republicans wrapped up their statewide convention over the weekend in Burlingame. And they know that the road to keeping their House majority runs through several key Congressional districts here in California. The GOP has only a narrow 4-seat majority in the House and needed Democrats to help keep Speaker of the House Mike Johnson in power, staving off a conservative rebellion. A handful of closely contested races in California could help determine which party controls the next Congress. That was one of many key points of focus at this weekend's gathering of California Republicans, who had to weather a bit of controversy since their keynote speaker was South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a rising star who was at the top of many pundits' short list to be Donald Trump's running mate—until she revealed in her new memoir that she had shot and killed her own disobedient dog because she hated him so much. Susan S. Phillips is Executive Director and Professor of Christianity and Sociology at New College Berkeley (an affiliate of the Graduate Theological Union in California). Susan is keenly interested in how engaging the caring practices will shape us spiritually. She is a certified spiritual director (Mercy Center, Burlingame, California) and has practiced spiritual direction since the early 1990s. The book Candlelight offers an intimate view of spiritual direction through written re-enactments of actual spiritual direction sessions.
