Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Whether mild (commonly called a concussion) or severe, TBI can create long-term health challenges ranging from cognitive fatigue, to memory loss to insomnia and mental health issues. This episode explores how LoveYourBrain's free yoga and meditation program benefits people affected by TBI and their caregivers. Since 2015, Dr. Kyla Pearce, Senior Director of Programs and Research at LoveYourBrain, has trained over 2,500 yoga teachers and clinicians in how to adapt yoga for TBI. She was the primary investigator on the largest published study of yoga for TBI, which found significant improvement in quality of life, resilience, cognition, and positive affect among 705 people with TBI who participated in the LoveYourBrain program.LoveYourBrain was founded in 2014 by brothers Kevin and Adam Pearce following Kevin's severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a snowboarding accident in 2009 while training for the Olympics. Their family's experience navigating Kevin's recovery inspired them to create LoveYourBrain. To date, LoveYourBrain has supported nearly 50,000 people worldwide, through research-backed programs offered at no cost to empower the TBI community with new tools, resources, and connections. We talk about:Common challenges after traumatic brain injuryHow hard it is to have an invisible injuryWhat the research says about yoga for traumatic brain injury (TBI)How Dr. Pearce designed the LoveYourBrain six-week yoga program — from asana adaptations to types of meditation to group sharingThe importance of cultivating resilience rather than a return to “normal”Post-traumatic growth — what it is and how we can all benefit from seeing life's challenges through this lensMindful March — how you can support people with TBI in accessing yogaLoveYourBrain's online teacher training programLastly: March is Brain Injury Awareness Month! During his decade of pro hockey, former Chicago Blackhawk Daniel Carcillo (nicknamed "Car Bomb" for his aggressive approach on the ice) racked up two Stanley Cup Championships and over 150 fights. But the stat most pressing to Carcillo since his retirement has been the seven diagnosed concussions he sustained as a player, and the hundreds he says that went undiagnosed through his career. Now, Carcillo has made it his mission to push state and federal agencies for funding as well as public access to psilocybin -- generally referred to as "magic mushrooms" -- a natural treatment for the traumatic brain injuries that he says saved his life. This week, during Brain Injury Awareness Month, we hear audio from WBBM reporter Jim Gudas' recent interview with Carcillo, as well as State Senator Rachel Ventura discussing Illinois' approach to this potential treatment with host and producer Jim Hanke. For the final episode of Brain Injury Awareness Month in Canada, Cassandra and Miriam of the NLBIA (Newfoundland and Labrador Brain Injury Association) talk to Cst. James Cadigan of the RNC (Royal Newfoundland Constabulary) about IPV (Intimate Partner Violence), one of the most pervasive causes of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). There are many complicated reasons why TBIs caused by IPV are so often undiagnosed and unreported. Dr. Eve Valera briefly talked about some of those potential reasons on Episode 151. On this episode Cassandra and Miriam bring this important issue to light once again and show how seriously the police take IPV and know the many challenges victims may face. On this episode of our podcast we explore the fascinating world of brain research and how it impacts our understanding of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and mental health in veterans and athletes. In this episode, we review recent studies on brain donation by veterans and athletes, and discuss how this selfless act is helping researchers better understand the impact of TBI on the brain and mental health. We delve into the various types of TBI, including concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and explore how these injuries affect the brain in different ways. We also discuss the long-term mental health consequences of TBI, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and how this can impact the lives of veterans and athletes long after their injury.

Thank you so much to Cassandra and Miriam of the Newfoundland and Labrador Brain Injury Association (NLBIA) for hosting Concussion Talk Podcast during June, Brain Injury Awareness Month!I'm back as host for episode 129 and my guest is Prof. Isabelle Gagnon who teaches neurorehabilitation and pediatric physiotherapy in the School of Physical & Occupational Therapy at McGill. She is also a researcher and clinician at Montreal Children's Hospital. "Prof. Gagnon's research program focuses on how children and adolescents function after traumatic injury as well as on how rehabilitation services can contribute to achieving the best outcomes possible. Specifically she uses various tests for balance, motor abilities and self-confidence in order to determine whether children and adolescents are ready to return to physical activities. She has developed an innovative rehabilitation approach with children who are slow to recover after a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. Through collaborations, she is also involved in using functional and structural imaging, psychophysics and virtual reality assessments to explore how children recover after an injury. She currently leads a research group working on the development of common data elements to help researchers and clinicians speak the same language when taking care of children and teens with concussions. Prof. Gagnon is a physiotherapist at the Montreal Children's Hospital of the McGill University Health Center. She practices as a clinician on a part-time basis and is involved in the assessment and treatment of infants and children with developmental disabilities, congenital torticollis and is also involved in the Trauma Programs specifically with children who sustain concussions/mild traumatic brain injuries."https://www.mcgill.ca/spot/isabelle-gagnon Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/concussion-talk-podcast.
