Each graha (planet) governs a particular time frame (dasha). The dashas are in a sequence called the Vimshottari Mahadasha - this translates to "120 year great time period" - as in the average human ideally lives 120 years. The dasha shows you what fruit is ripe in your life. The dashas depend greatly on the graha's placement and strength in their chart, so to fully interpret your dasha you'll need to know the sign, house and nakshatra the graha is placed in. For example the Sun dasha is very different for someone who has Sun in Aries than someone who as their Sun in Libra, and so on.
