Click here to send me a quick message :) Traditional intact cultures, and systems like Ayurveda and TCM, all include not only physical and emotional healing but also speak to how the energetic layers of our beings impact our healing, too.Whether it's tuning into the medicine of the wheel of the year like Summer Solstice (the expansive, invigorating sunlight) or the harmonious dance of Yin and Yang or the subtle energies from the Vedic lens of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, every system holds its own wisdom. What matters most is how these subtle energies truly impact us, what we notice, what we feel affinity towards and what works for each of us as unique individuals. The dance of light and dark, contraction and expansion, the underworld and above world, are part of the necessary path to healing. Without one we cannot have the other. I explore all of this in depth and share some reflective prompts and share some examples of herbs and foods that can help you cultivate some of the subtle energies as well. This was a total riffing episode, so I hope it offers some little gems for at least one of you since it just sort of flowed through!Resources:Today's shownotes: Subtle energies on your path to radiant wellbeingFree guide to Gardening for Your Hormonal HealthEpisode 172: What is vibrational medicine? When Theories Are Questioned: Polyvagal Critique, Clinical Wisdom, and the Enduring Map of the Guṇas

In this solo episode, Amy Wheeler brings clarity and steadiness to the recent scientific critique of Polyvagal Theory by Paul Grossman and colleagues. Rather than reacting defensively or dismissing prematurely, this conversation explores what mature fields do when a theory is questioned: they clarify, refine, and return to foundational principles.Amy examines:• What the critique of Polyvagal Theory actually addresses • The difference between scientific precision and clinical usefulness • The risks of oversimplifying complex neurophysiology • How public wellness language can unintentionally flatten biological complexity • Why yoga philosophy offers a time-tested phenomenological map of regulationThis episode weaves together scientific dialogue, clinical reflection, lived experience, and classical yoga philosophy. What the Critique Is — and Is NotPaul Grossman and colleagues (2026) raise concerns about elements of Polyvagal Theory's evolutionary framing, anatomical specificity, and evidentiary scope. One key issue discussed in this episode is the oversimplification of the vagus nerve in popular discourse. The vagus nerve contains approximately 100,000 fibers and plays a role in multiple complex regulatory systems, including cardiac, respiratory, inflammatory, and gastrointestinal processes. Reducing this complexity to a simple “on/off switch” or three-state ladder risks confusing metaphor with mechanism. This episode distinguishes between:• The measurable anatomy of autonomic regulation • The heuristic value of state-based language • The difference between metaphor and physiologyScientific refinement is not erasure. It is maturation.Clinical Reflection and Lived ExperienceDr. Arielle Schwartz's clinical reflections on the critique emphasize that debates about anatomical precision do not invalidate the lived experience of autonomic shifts observed in therapy.Clinicians consistently observe patterned shifts in:• Activation • Collapse • Social engagement • Relational presencePolyvagal language has helped many practitioners and clients understand safety, co-regulation, and state-dependent perception. At the same time, intellectual integrity requires us to refine language where necessary.Amy also reflects on how we conduct discourse in our field. How we respond to disagreement often reveals our own regulatory capacity. Regulation is not only theoretical — it is relational.Phenomenology and the Yoga SūtraThis episode situates the conversation within a broader philosophical frame.Phenomenology refers to the study of lived experience as directly perceived — before explanation, before measurement, before mechanism. The Yoga Sūtra begins from this place:Yoga Sūtra 1.1 — atha yogānuśāsanam “Now, the teaching of yoga.”The word atha signals presence and readiness. We begin from lived experience.Yoga Sūtra 1.2 — yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ “Yoga is the regulation of the fluctuations of consciousness.”Patañjali maps patterns of activation, dullness, clarity, and agitation long before neurophysiology named vagal pathways. The Yoga Sūtra functions as a guidebook for living because it trains discernment around these fluctuations. The Guṇas: A 2,000-Year-Old Map of RegulationDrawing from Sāṅkhya philosophy, Amy explores the three guṇas:• Sattva — clarity, coherence, luminosity • Rajas — activation, movement, agitation • Tamas — inertia, heaviness, obscurationAt the level of lived experience, there is meaningful overlap between the guṇas and contemporary discussions of autonomic states. While not anatomically identical, the phenomenological parallels are substantial. The guṇa framework does not reduce regulation to a nerve or a switch. It describes qualities of experience across body, mind, and relationship.Rather than “turning on” calm, yoga cultivates flexibility across states and gradually increases the probability of sattva through lifestyle, perception, ethical alignment, and disciplined awareness.Yoga Therapy Is Not a TechniqueA central theme of this episode:Yoga therapy and therapeutic yoga are not techniques. They are not hacks. They are not state toggles. They are integrated ways of living.Yoga shapes:• How we eat • How we sleep • How we speak • How we relate • How we perceive • How we respond under stressOver time, practice softens identification with roles, biases, and reactive narratives.Yoga Sūtra 1.3 — tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe avasthānam “Then the seer abides in their true nature.”Regulation becomes existential, not merely physiological.Key Takeaways• Scientific critique strengthens intellectual integrity. • Oversimplification should be corrected. • Clinical lived experience still matters. • Ancient phenomenological models remain relevant. • Yoga therapy is a multifaceted path, not a nervous-system trick.Yoga does not stand or fall with any single contemporary theory. Its philosophical foundations have endured across time, even as scientific language evolves.

We avoid four sinful activities and especially avoid four things. Be careful about what we eat, as it directly affects your consciousness. No illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling, no meat-eating. These are just low activities. When we're engaged in devotional service, we have to be careful because we may not see everything. So there are different kinds of aparādhas. There's vaiṣṇava-aparādha, there's nāma-aparādha, there's sevā-aparādha and there's dhāma-aparādha. For instance, when you go to the dhāma, you have to be very careful because you may not know where you're stepping. You should not develop a flippant attitude—that "Who are all these people? What's this place?" If you're around devotees, you should be very humble because you should know that they are very dear to Kṛṣṇa. When you're around the Deities, don't be a bull in a china shop. That's why there are regulations in pañcarātrika worship. You make sure there's no cross-contamination. If you touch some prasād, like if you pick up a tulsī leaf already offered, then you purify your hand before you offer a fresh tulsī leaf. You have to be careful where you step, never step over Kṛṣṇa, never put your feet on things. There are ways— like don't talk loudly before the Deities, don't cry, wail. There are all these points for avoiding aparādha. 'Rādhā' means ārādhanam, worship of Kṛṣṇa in the proper way. And there are ways that are improper. So you refine your mind and the way you act when you're around the devotees, when you're around Kṛṣṇa, when you're around the dhāma, and when you're around the Holy Name. Then you can be fully receptive to their mercy and take it all in. Pāpa are gross activities that come from our attachment to the modes of rajas and tamas, and even sattva to some degree, but it's very light. But the tamasic, we have to be very careful and purify our minds and hearts so that we can at least develop sāttvic habits. Kṛṣṇa talks about this in the 11th Canto, there is a whole chapter about it. Everything you use in your life should be sāttvic. Because otherwise, in rajas, tamas, then you're still subjected to activities that are animal-like. And we need clarity, we need sattva. Sattvaṁ yad brahma-darśanam. You have to come from the raw wood, to the smoke, to the fire. That's tamas, rajas, sattva. So we avoid the things that are obviously degrading, and then we avoid offenses so that we can be gentle and worshipful around the Holy Name, around the Vaiṣṇavas, around the Deities, etc. I'm going to read you the verse again, because this is the verse for the day. This, for those of you who are interested, it's in the.. We start with a little review of rasa vada, the theory of aesthetic "flavors of Consciousness" that are very much emphasized in our Tāntrik iconography & poetics before presenting Mātangī Devī as a a radical invitation to reclaim those rasas, or "flavors" which are commonly rejected as impure or unspiritual or unwholesome in the name of a deeper, more inclusive & capacious non-dual understanding. And to discuss the ucchistā approach (the spirituality of impurity/trangression), we need to say more about śānta-bhāva, Abhinavagupta's 9th meta-flavor that imbues all the other flavors (even the "unspiritual" or disturbing ones) with poetic and aesthetic (read also: spiritual) meaning. The discussions around śānta-bhāva which engage Bharata and Anandavardhana, two important aesthetic philosophers that influence Abhinava's Tāntrik exegesis, present a new understanding of "sattva" as that luminosity inherent in consciousness itself and not just a feature of the mind nourished by food purity, yogic disciplines & spiritual practices. The thesis then is as follows: contemplating Mātangī and the spirituality of impurity is contingent upon an understanding of the meta-flavor of Śānta-bhāva which itself present a sort of meta-sattva that does not negate rajas, agitation or tamas, inertia but rather includes them and exalts them! As such, I can say that all spirituality (and Vāmacāra is no exception) is about sattva maxing only in this lecture, I want to refine our understanding of just what it is we mean by "sattva", as per the interpretations of Kaula masters like Somananda, Abhinava & others. Also, we indulge in a long digression at the top of the lecture on the nature of bhoga, enjoyment, the Vedic orientation toward bhoga and the age old question of is bhoga mutually exclusive with yoga, spirituality? The Joyful Manifestation Show with Iyer Elevating Vibrations - Beauty, Branding, and the Path of Sattva In this episode of the Joyful Manifestation Show, host Sugandhi Iyer explores the profound contrast between the "war energy" currently affecting the globe and the high-vibration power of beauty and tourism. She provides a spiritual framework for understanding human behavior through the three Gunas and offers practical advice on personal branding in both career and romance. The core message emphasizes consciously replacing negative external stimuli with aesthetic and harmonious visuals to manifest abundance. The Conflict of Energies: War vs. Joyful Manifestation The world is currently witnessing a clash between "war energy" and "high vibration energy." Tourism, exemplified by regions like Sri Lanka and Dubai, represents a joyful vibration rooted in beauty and construction, while warring forces represent a destructive, low-vibration counter-force. War energy is described as an invasive force that, once it infiltrates a person's aura—including world leaders—attracts further reasons for conflict, creating a vicious cycle. To break this, individuals must resist the temptation to engage with combative energies, allowing the "war energy" in their own auras to deplete through non-engagement. Visual Substitution and the Goddess of Abundance A central theme is the "abuse" of the Goddess of Abundance through the destruction of wealth and beauty in war. Iyer argues that money should be used for life-affirming purposes: planting trees, building beautiful structures, and creating art. She urges listeners to perform a "visual substitution"—actively avoiding news of destruction and instead filling the mind with images of flowers, gold jewelry, colorful prints, and elegant architecture. By surrounding oneself with beauty, even in mundane roles like accounting, one permeates their financial manifestation with high-vibration energy. Strategic Branding in Career and Love Success in the material world requires a balance between kindness and "smartness." Iyer introduces the concept of personal branding, where an individual makes themselves the "go-to person" for their superiors or partners. She warns against over-generosity, citing examples where training others without guarding one's position led to job loss. In relationships, branding involves becoming the indispensable partner who "covers all the bases" of their significant other's needs, creating a positive image that is difficult to shake. Personal Manifestation: The New Apartment Reflecting her own teachings, Iyer shares her move to a new luxury apartment in a "rich city" near the sea. The home features "Las Vegas designs" and gold filigree, embodying the beauty she advocates. She contrasts the billionaires living there—who focus on manufacturing and productivity—with those who focus on war, noting that high energy should always be channeled into manufacturing and progress rather than destruction. True manifestation is a proactive choice to align with Sattva—the energy of light and love. By guarding one's personal brand and intentionally curating a beautiful mental and physical environment, one can rise above global negative vibrations and attract lasting abundance and joy.

Namaskar. In this episode, Lord Krishna continues with Dhyāna Yoga, explaining the ideal way to practice meditation—covering the right environment, posture, and the art of focusing the mind. He emphasizes the importance of moderation in all aspects of life—whether in food, sleep, or physical activity—highlighting that true discipline lies not in extremes, but in balanced living.Krishna explains that a person's diet should be aligned with three key factors: one's age, the body's current condition, and the nature of one's work. The same principle applies to exercise and rest. Sudheer illustrates these ideas with practical and relatable examples.Krishna then addresses a common challenge in meditation—the mind's tendency to wander and feel bored when asked to concentrate. He explains that true progress comes from mastering the stability and focus of the mind through consistent practice. The episode also introduces the three gunas—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas—with most individuals naturally inclined toward Rajas. Krishna further highlights the importance of empathy, reminding us that what causes pain or joy to us is likely to affect others in the same way. This leads to a deeper understanding of why, in Indian tradition, divinity is seen in all forms of life. The episode concludes by setting the stage for Arjun's profound questions about the nature of the mind, which will be explored further in the next episode.

In this episode, Swamiji explains Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7, Verse 12, where Shree Krishna declares: “Whatever states of being are manifested by the three modes of material nature—goodness, passion, and ignorance—know that they are all created by Me. Yet, I am not under them; they are under Me.”  Swamiji clarifies that the three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas) are the building blocks of material existence. Every thought, action, and quality in the world is a mixture of these modes, and all originate from God. However, God Himself is transcendental—He is never bound or influenced by them.  Through vivid narration, Swamiji shows how:  Sattva guna (goodness) manifests as clarity, wisdom, and harmony.  Rajo guna (passion) manifests as ambition, restlessness, and desire-driven activity.  Tamo guna (ignorance) manifests as inertia, confusion, and darkness.  He emphasizes that while these gunas shape human behavior, they are ultimately God's energies, and He remains beyond them. This teaching inspires seekers to rise above the gunas by cultivating devotion, recognizing that liberation comes not by being trapped in goodness, passion, or ignorance, but by transcending them through surrender to God.  Listeners are invited to reflect on their own tendencies, understand the interplay of the gunas in daily life, and strive to connect with the Divine who is beyond all modes.  About Swami Mukundananda: Swami Mukundananda is a renowned spiritual leader, Vedic scholar, Bhakti saint, best-selling author, and an international authority on the subject of mind management. He is the founder of the unique yogic system called JKYog. Swamiji holds distinguished degrees in Engineering and Management from two of India's most prestigious institutions—IIT and IIM. Having taken the renounced order of life (sanyas), he is the senior disciple of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, and has been sharing Vedic wisdom across the globe for decades.

In tamas, we're helpless. If you've ever felt helpless—for instance, if you have some addiction and you can't give up, or you feel so depressed that you can't do anything—this is the modality of tamas. Above tamas comes rajas. Rajas is the modality of intense activity. That is, we are creative. In rajas however, the setback is that no matter what we get, it's not enough, because we remain in that active and creative mode. We attain something, we create something, but it has to become more. We may attain a position—for instance, you may become a city council member, but then think, "Well, that's nothing. I want to be the mayor." When you become mayor, you may think, "Well, why don't I become governor?" And after becoming governor etc etc. There's never an endpoint. In modern parlance, it's called the hedonic treadmill; that is, no matter what I get, it's not enough. And there are plenty of songs and poems from ancient times and modern times expressing the experience of being in rajas and tamas. For instance, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" and many, many more, like "Too Much Is Not Enough," etc. And then there's the highest of the modalities in this world, called sattva. Sattva is the modality of clarity, where we see ourselves beyond the body. Gone is the drive to attain something, because we realize we already are something. We are something that's so amazing. And as Kṛṣṇa describes in the Bhagavad Gītā, when you see yourself beyond the body, you realize that this is the most amazing thing: the soul itself. Kṛṣṇa says 'āścaryavat', he calls it amazing, 'āścaryavat.' Some see it as amazing, some hear of it as amazing. And when you analyze who you really are, you examine your consciousness, or you become introspective, then you don't feel that you have to attain anything necessarily, because you already are something, and you're here right now, and you feel tuṣṭa, or satisfaction in the self. This is sattva. But there's a modality beyond sattva, which is called śuddha-sattva, which is a completely transcendental realm—transcendental to the modes—meaning you've gone beyond any of the modalities of the material world. And this is pure consciousness. So the perfection of the teachings of Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is to come to that pure consciousness.  Today we dive deeper into the layers of the mind and personality with Ayurvedic Psychology 102: The 3 Doshas and the 3 Gunas. At the heart of Ayurveda lies a timeless template. One that explains not just your body and mind, but consciousness itself through the lens of the five elements and their expressions as the Doshas and Gunas. This isn't just about understanding your stress responses or emotional habits, though that's part of it. It's about learning to see the world through the lens of nature's intelligence. We'll begin with the 3 Doshas: Vata, the principle of movement and change; creative, spontaneous, but prone to anxiety and fragmentation.Pitta, the force of transformation focused, passionate, and discerning yet can burn out or become irritable. Kapa, the energy of structure and cohesion, loving, loyal and calm, but sometimes resistant to change. And then we'll move into the 3 Gunas, the subtle forces of the mind: Sattva brings clarity, peace, and harmony.Rajas brings action, ambition, and restlessness. Tamma brings stillness, but also inertia, confusion or ignorance. These 6 forces, the three Doshas and the three Gunas form a living map of consciousness. They help us understand why we feel, what we feel, do what we do, and how to come back into alignment with our higher self. When you begin to see yourself and others through this elemental lens, life starts to make more sense. You stop personalizing everything and start realizing and relating to your experience with compassion, insight, and greater freedom. Send us a textFor 20% off Kerala Ayurveda products, use code OjasOasis at checkoutFor 20% off GarryNSun products, use code OJASOASIS20 at checkout Book a 1:1 with Sasha at https://www.ojasoasis.com/book For 50% off your initial intake consultation, mention you're a subscriber of the podcast. 'Mahāt' means those who are great souls. They are perfectly situated, and kṛtena means they devise a method to live in this world and at the same time, practice spiritual life. They do it for themselves, but they also leave behind them the process so that everyone can take it up. For instance, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is The Supreme Personality of God. He appeared 500 years ago, and had many disciples. They listened to everything Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, and then they codified it. They wrote it down in books like Śrī Upadeśāmṛta, which is the primer for bhakti yoga, written by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī. I was in the San Francisco Airport some time back; the airport had given me a space to distribute books from. One of the books I had in ample quantity was the Upadeśāmṛta, so I used to distribute it a lot at the airport. It was in Terminal Two, which used to be the International Terminal at San Francisco Airport. Any airport in America—I'll tell you anything about it. I grew up in one. And they gave us what used to be an insurance counter. It was a round, actually octagonal, booth. They used to sell flight insurance there, but then they got a machine that replaced the people who worked there. So they gave us the booth and said, "If you would like to sell your books, you can use this booth." So I used to stand behind that booth, and people would come over asking for directions. I would give them directions to their flight, and then I would give them directions to the spiritual world. And I particularly remember one day I met a young man from Taiwan, a student who had finished his education here. He was on his way home, and I told him about the Upadeśāmṛta and how it was written 500 years ago by a great saint named Rūpa Gosvāmī. I said, "There are instructions here for life, how you can make spiritual progress." He said, "Oh, very nice. I'd like it." He offered a donation so we could print more books. He opened his carry-on bag, which had a zipper on top. He put the book in and zipped it closed. I watched him as he walked toward his gate, and I was thinking, "I wonder if Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī envisioned this 500 years ago, that there would be airports, or that this young man from Taiwan, so far from Bhāratavarṣa, would somehow meet another young man (I was young at that time) from California, and we would have an interaction where I'd give him a book written 500 years ago by a saint named Rūpa Gosvāmī, who wrote the book in Vṛndāvana at a place called Ter Kadamba? And he would take it home to Taiwan and read those instructions. “Prabhupada Picks” refers to a selection of verses from the 10th Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam that Srila Prabhupada memorized himself and quoted very frequently in his teachings. Rasa, meaning “nectar” or “essence,” captures the richness of life's emotional experiences, much like the flavours of a meal. Just as the Gunas influence taste...Rajas being too intense, Tamas too dull, and Sattva offering the perfect balance...our emotions shape our human experience. As Robert Svoboda says, “Existence without juice is dry and tasteless.”Tantric tradition recognizes nine Rasas, the core emotional flavors of life: Disgust, Fear, Anger, Sadness, Love, Courage, Wonder, Joy, and Calmness. Each Rasa is born from an underlying Bhava, our true feeling state, giving depth and meaning to our experiences. In this practice, we explore these Rasas through movement, allowing emotions to surface and shift naturally. By embracing the full spectrum of our emotions with awareness and courage, we open to greater self-understanding and fulfillment. Let yourself fully taste, savour, and express the richness of your inner landscape. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. To support Zephyr Yoga Podcast, donate here.
